      I have 3 points that are a little of a problem for me. First is the whole hinge thing being too loose and not tight enough to hold the screen, second is the keyboard “feeling cheap” as he said, and last is the lighting zone on the laptop keyboard being only one zone.
      Can you tell me your opinion of those issues ?

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sadek__4952 none of that is anywhere near as bad as you may think. Hinges are as sturdy as they should be for a foldable hinge, they’re good. The keyboard is hard because it needs to be so it doesn’t feel mushy when you flip it. Still feels great to type one. Doesn’t feel cheap at all. And yes it’s one-zone RGB but I mean that’s not a big deal 😂

    XG mobile deserves an upgradability score of its own. Thunderbolt laptops don't always perform well with an eGPU, as you demonstrated with a recent video. You could also consider doing it for TB laptops, but it will require you testing whether it's actually a good setup that's worth considering, i.e. more testing. XG on the other hand should be optimized and work well. It might even encourage continuous support of the platform by ASUS, given your reach as a laptop reviewer.

    I got this laptop last week to replace a Z13 Flow that I've been using with he 3080 XG Mobile. The main reason being that I've found the Z13 battery life really abysmal when I've taken it on work trips - it's great at home and docked. I chose the X16 as something that would be powerful enough and with a good enough battery when traveling, but able to keep using the investment I'd already made in purchasing the XG Mobile. Even though the 3080 is not a huge step up from the 3070Ti, it still is to some extent, and takes load off the laptop by idling the 3070Ti - and is a good docking solution on top of that. The X16 by itself is amazing and frankly wows me, but I'm having issues when using it with the XG Mobile. It's completely fine when doing productivity work, but when playing games for extended periods, sometimes I will see brief interrupts where performance tanks, and Armory crate type mid-screen popups come up saying it's switched to Silent or Performance - and then it almost immediately switched back to turbo and everything is fine again. This happens several times an hour. Also, this was with the X16 connected ONLY to the XG Mobile, and not also to its own 240W AC adapter. When I tried connecting the X16 ALSO to the AC adapter at the same time as the XG mobile, the phenomenon was a little different. Instead, a few times an hour, the mid-screen popup flashes "connected to power" briefly, but there is very little, or no temporary dip in performance. I don't know if I am doing something wrong, but this can't be correct functionality with the XG Mobile surely....?

    Great review as usual Jarod ❤️
    For this one specifically though, I would have liked to see more testing on the performance and software compatibility of the pen. This is of particular importance to me (or rather, my mum) since this is one of the only ~15'' laptops with a powerful discrete GPU and a stylus, all of which are critical features for her.
    For some context, my mum is in her 50s and at the head of a design studio. She regularly needs to annotate/review large 3D models and high resolution renderings, so she needs both powerful hardware and a good stylus. Also she is heavily myopic, so she finds anything smaller than 15'' uncomfortable to use. Quite picky yes, but that's also part of the reason she's willing to pay a high price tag.
    Currently she is using a 2017 Surface Book 2 15'', which was basically the only option back then that satisfied all those needs. However the performance is starting to feel lacking in 2022; the questionably-designed detachment mechanism also gave out a few times which made the GPU unusable; finally it's a repairability nightmare so forget about trying to swap out worn out connectors.
    Long story short, she is in the market for a replacement on the precondition that there exists a good one, and honestly this one might just be it. I have to look at other reviews that take a deeper dive on the stylus though before I make this recommendation.

    • @jmdenny5068
      @jmdenny5068 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, you ever find out anything about compatible styluses/pens? Seen some forums where people suggest the ASUS Pen 2.0, but they seem to only be available on the secondary market. Also, seen some people suggest any MPP 2.0 compatible pen. Just curious as I just got the ASUS Flow X16 (2022) and was looking for a good stylus/pen.

    • @scheimong
      @scheimong ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jmdenny5068 so I did actually buy this device for my mum and it was okay. In terms of pen compatibility, the ASUS pen works alright (as you'd imagine), although I cannot recall with certainty whether I got v1 or v2. Surprisingly, her old Microsoft pen also works just fine, so I assume there's some standard protocol going on (which gives me some confidence that third party pens will probably be just fine too).
      The main complaints she had were:
      1. The default colour profile is too vibrant, although adjusting it in AMD's driver software was rather easy.
      2. General instability and inconvenience with the piece of crap that is Windows 11. Nothing much you can do about this unless you're jumping ship to Linux.

    • @joetho4298
      @joetho4298 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scheimonghey, I know that you've already had this comment necro'd months later once, but I just wanted to suggest the Wacom bamboo pen.
      It's excellent, I initially got mine because many people, across a broad array of devices, suggest getting this pen rather than various stock pens.
      I use mine on multiple devices across Android devices, a Mac, Windows, and Linux desktops. If I recall correctly (never a safe bet with me) it's compatible with multiple major pen standards, which makes sense because I've always had zero problems with the eraser and other features.
      Finally, it's got a very natural feel in the hand and multiple 'nibs' (pen tips). The tips offer greater flexibility with narrow, broad, etc, as well as one called 'blue' which has some advanced functionality and performance with compatible devices. I'm a man, so maybe the pen fitting better in my hand may not apply to your mom if she's got smaller hands, but I've read all over the internet about the pen when I was shopping around and I don't recall a single comment saying it doesn't feel nice.
      Maybe an idea for a birthday or Christmas! They're not much money.

    Usually I'd say I'd prefer Intel for machine like this, but I'm glad they didn't went Intel cause otherwise it'll kill the battery in an instant. For the type of people to use his device going Ryzen was the right choice. This is also for people who want a Zephyrus with 16:10 screen. It's as close as being a capable all in one for anybody to max out their use case entirely. Definitely recommended for especially creative professionals.

      That's great info to have, thanks! I wonder why it gets reported as 2.0b on a constant basis... (I own this model, but no 4K@120Hz-capable display where to try such mode). Is it safe to tweak it up to 150W? I mean, doesn't that increase thermals too much? Cheers.

    • @colinmaclaren8778
      @colinmaclaren8778 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Avelinovski It is safe, but not worth it. @150W the cooling system cannot keep up and it will start to thermal throttle after 5 minutes or so. Up to 140W is possible with the fans blasting @100% and the CPU boosting disabled. So not worth it in the end. I returned the device, had too many issues with it. Even at its stock 125W the fans were just too loud under load, even compared to many other gaming laptops. I had very bad Wifi reception, constnat lag spikes up to 250ms for no apparent reason. Also the display is just weird. Normally with an HDR display brightness is set in HDR mode and there is a slider in Windows to adjust the brightness of SDR content. If you do this right, the Desktop does look good even in HDR mode and you do not have to switch constantly. With the X16 it is the other way around. SDR brightness (when HDR is enabled) is set in stone, but you can adjust the brightness of HDR content. There you have your pick of "Very bright, but crushing all details on bright content" or "does basically look like SDR". Furthermore, there was constant anoying flickering on the Desktop when just browsing the web. Overall, not worth the hassle.

      My 27' iMac with a glossy panel has zero issues with reflections. My glossy display phone has zero issues with reflections indoors. But a laptop, has issues with reflections? Come on.

    Jarrod's review touches on a lot of important points, in fact Jarrod's earlier video on this laptop was what really made me buy this thing, so I thought I'd put my two cents here for anybody looking to buy this:
    - Like Jarrod said, the Hinge is not the stiffest, but I don't think it would be wrong to call it strong (although this is something only time will tell), it's just that the hinge is slightly loose.
    - The speakers are pretty nice, but don't expect phenomenal music quality, it's still a nice set of speakers that I'm happy with
    - Coming from a much older laptop, one thing I really appreciate is the big touchpad, I've noticed that I actually use the touchpad as opposed to the mouse on this laptop
    - If you're really keen on getting a stylus, do get a bluetooth one
    - This thing is small, as opposed to my older 15.6" laptop with gargantuan bezels, this thing is sleek, and looks fantastic
    - I changed out the WiFi card pretty quickly, as the one in here can get pretty messy
    At this point, the only thing I think Asus can really improve on their next iteration are probably the webcam, the speakers, the WiFi card, battery life, and if possible, Sleep. I constantly keep comparing this laptop to the MacBook Pro, which is a fair benchmark considering that the Flow X16 does cost as much as one.

    My guess on the CPU power cap is because they probably can't get it to cap the power lower automatically when it detects it's in tablet mode. Or it has no sensor that can tell the difference between tent/flipped and full tablet mode. This is what I would do too if there's no clear way for the laptop to know if it's on tent/flipped mode or has the touchscreen right against the intake vents. At best the CPU's own thermal management will do it but then it'll blow hot air onto your hand or elbow or chest depending on how you hold it when on tablet mode.
    -------
    As for the specs, I'm kind of disappointed there's no AMD Advantage with 67x0m or 68x0m option. AMD usually asks for vapor chambers, and since there are no ports on the back, a vapor camber extending to the back with fins right there will have more thermal mass.
    I'd even take that over the XG Mobile connector for a few reasons:
    1. Wasn't there a tendency for NVidia and AMD GPU drivers to have conflicts? Before it was just the old G14 not switching over to the NVidia GPU, IIRC laptops with AMD chips and NVidia GPUs get some software hiccups with one or either XXG Mobile chip.
    2. If I'm going to use this as a desktop replacement this is less likely to make me want an external screen than even a 17.3in screen. Partially fold the screen over and it moves the screen closer to my eyes/external keybaord. Sure without like a laptop stand on a monitor arm it'll sit lower but unless the hinge totally sucks I can just angle it. Or just put it on a monitor arm like that and still have the screen closer.
    --------
    As for XG Mobile connectors and TB getting counted for upgradeability I'm not too hot on including either for now. Maybe when TB5 with more bandwidth (and also USB4 allowing this on AMD CPUs) and when Asus actually comes up with RTX 4000 and RX 7000 versions so there might be some continuity?

    I had this laptop for a day till I returned it. The complaints I had were high pitch fans and the absurdly bright screen at the lowest brightness. If you go low brightness with mini led, theres so much blooming that it just looks awful. Maybe I could have lived with the fans but any night time use just kills your eyes
    Otherwise a fantastic piece of hardware. I'm almost considering buying it again as there a sale going on for RTX 3050 ti model with the max spec eGPU for the same price as I had paid for the RTX 3070 ti model without eGPU, but the brightness factor is just too much

      @TheFFsage 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MLHunt If you have a laptop atm, try and see if you could find any data anywhere how the brightness looks on it on lowest setting and then compare it to the one the Flow X16. I don't think I've seen a laptop it the 60s in lowest brightness pretty much never on Jarrods channel
      To put into perspective, I used the G14 earlier this year (returned it too due to high pitch fans and trackpad issues) and it was already for me a bit bright but manageable and its lowest brightness was in the 20s, Flow X16 is in the 60s
      Ofc if using multi zone mini led you get it dimmer but then you need to know if you are ok with blooming. Can't really say how bad bloom it is, was too much for me personally. On macbooks it is probably way less as there are more mini leds in the screen than the Flow X16

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The minimum brightness is a little bit high (honestly a luxury to complain about that these days, lol). High-pitched fans sounds like it may have been a defect, as mine has a very pleasant, neutral pitch. I'm in the TH-cam comments right now (dark mode) with mini-LED on and low brightness and it honestly doesn't look that bad. Switching to single-zone (takes about 5 seconds) completely eliminates that issue.

    I bought the 3060 model a month ago, this model number was listed with a miniled screen on the vendor website and on many others. I realized quite quick that the screen was an ips (the box was saying just LED) then i bring it back to the shop, but the stupid vendor was telling me that the screen was a miniled, despite having no hdr options, no full aray multizone option as well, but it was hard for me to prove it to him and he end up telling me that i had to install a screen driver, it took 3 days for him to accept taking back the machine, then i noticed that a week later they updated the website to put ips instead of miniled.
