Imagine being the parents of one of these “men”. You know your son isn’t the most attractive, popular, coolest man but you had hopes he could find a woman on his level at best or take in a ex party girl at worst. I only feel sorry for the poor baby, who was completely vulnerable and had no say or blame in all of this mess.
I'm pretty sure part of the reason why this "family" got as much coverage as it did prior to the child abuse was for a few reasons:
-It's an overweight, visibly unhealthy woman who has found love from not just one "male," but multiple others as well. This is a winning message for all the body positive, fat apologists. Her relationship being highlighted proves that overweight women can find love in some form or another and that they don't need to adhere to beauty standards or put any effort into their appearance to look fit and healthy.
-Female empowerment. It's a woman who has four men basically worshiping her, one dude at the end of the couch desperately reaching across the unhappy child abuser sitting next to him just to hold the woman's hand. They show a clip of them following closely behind her as she takes the lead down the sidewalk. Every time someone starts to talk about the beauty and open-mindedness of poly relationships they should have to watch this. I've seen multiple (lol no pun intended) poly arrangements in my life and not a single one has been anything except a bunch of mentally ill people where one of them is getting what they want (sleeping around and extra attention) and their partners are miserable.
I tried to explain that to a girl I knew once. I told her the flat out the only way a poly relationship actually works is if no one actually loves anyone else. This is something women do not suffer from for pretty obvious reasons. How this impacts society is a father that doesnt feel an investment in the betterment of their children doesnt provide for them, doesnt try to advantage their children, it leaves the next generation more disaffected and lacking and it also creates division and internal strife in the family unit as to property and ownership.

As an onlooker from New Zealand we're usually only exposed to USA through what we see in movies or on TV and it always looks inviting, every locale dense with character, history or intrigue.
