Goku in the live action DB looks like Jesse Pinkman if he never touched meth.
Totally I thought he looked familiar but I couldn't quite place it. I guess around 2009 breaking bad was super hot so I guess the casting director loved the idea of making goku look like pinkman

The reason why the attack is named after a Hawaiian emperor is because the author of Dragon Ball is a goof, and he noticed that the emperor's name is coincidentally "turtle destruction wave" in Japanese, so he made up a story about a turtle-themed martial arts master that teaches Goku how to do the "turtle destruction wave." That really is the entire reason.
This whole comment cracked me up. I had no idea.
And the Sayans are named after food. Carrot, Vegetable, Radish, Broccoli, etc.
And they fight against the forces of Freezer, cooler, and King Cold.

As a huge fan of both, (transformers from the 80's not bays bullshit) this doesnt make sense if you are referring to the movies cuz goku is much older than sam in that case so the sentence should be flipped.

Piccolo (or Piccolo Jr) is the one we all know from DBZ and he was spit out by King Piccolo to avenge Kid Goku punched him through his chest.

King Piccolo didn't technically die, but the body that was originally King Piccolo did. Piccolo Jr is in essence, King Piccolo, having put the remaining power he had into birthing himself, and transferring his soul to the new body. At the same time however, Piccolo Jr is his own person, and gradually distanced himself from King Piccolo.

For the stylistic art aspect and CG visuals I love watching Speed Racer,.. but that's it, I just think it's too cheesy.
But the ending though is still my fav not gonna lie
the only reason to like this is that Toriyama has see this and thought that this is not how he wishes to end his legacy. so he created dragonball super... and for that i thank the creators of DBE

It's not that bad, not like DB was a masterpiece, probably nostalgia more than anything for most people of the show. That being said I have a question. I don't doubt it's probably the same reasoning for A LOT of anime, but were the creators high or something when they came up with DBZ or DB in general? I mean it's Stephen King levels of fucking stupid but kind of cool. I mean half monkey aliens who are gods basically who fight against cyborgs, green aliens and drag queen gray lizard man, oh and patrick star with red eyes. I mean you can't come up with that stuff rationally.

To me the weirdest decision about this movie is that it can’t decide if this is some fantasy world or our actual reality. They’re talking about aliens and magic dragons and wild shrinking folding vehicle tech, but then suddenly it’s a modern day American high school. And everyone thinks Goku is nuts even though they clearly live in a world with all the crazy nonsense.
The writer admitted he knew nothing about Dragon Ball and just did some basic research and a simple story for the cheque.
Justin Chatwin was actually really good in the Doctor Who special he was in! He played a superhero who the Twelfth Doctor had accidentally given powers to as a child. So the Doctor is visiting him all along his timeline to monitor him. Hilarious and heartwarming episode.

Trivia: Akira Toriyama, the author of the series, is pretty big on Hawaii and Hawaiian culture and whatnot, and while he was working on the series, his wife made him notice that "Kamehameha" in Japanese can roughly mean "Destructive turtle wave"

Death Note, the anime is an exercise in the importance of setting rules to define and play inside a supernatural event to create interesting and novel conflicts within a story, and the live action *American* Death Note movie is an exercise in _how_ not understanding that - as a writer - ruins the experience for the audience.
Speed Racer is worse????? That movie was a FANTASTIC reimagining of the original cartoon right down to the plot beats. It was literally an episode of Speed Racer extended over 2 hours and looks AMAZING
That final race scene was phenomenal. Love that movie

I grew up on the show and i loved Speed Racer. MINUS the fact that Speed couldnt fight. In the anime he was cleaning dudes up with that kidney punch.
Speed was scrappy! And he fought pretty dirty too. I recall him whacking plenty of people in the face with a wrench.
The Speed Racer from the anime was a two-fisted, surly asskicker and I don't know if it'd be possible to actually make him sympathetic AND remain true to the character. I'd rather see someone lean into the grittiness as much as the bizarre shit because half the fun of old shows is the totally different worldview of the creators

This movie was the first and only instance where after 15 mins of watching it in the cinema, I turned to my dad and asked "Can we leave?"
Roshi looking younger than Grandpa Gohan is one of the few things that makes sense in this so called movie. Roshi drank immortality water, so he's actually three hundred years old and stopped aging.
Even more reason to bring back Gohan, Roshi had 225 years on him.
I wonder how the movie would've messed up Krillin and Tien.

They would've had Krillin tall with long flowing hair and a massive nose, and Tien pale white like Chiaotzu with only one eye.

The biggest problem is that they made Goku an awkward, brooding, teenager. What most fans love about Goku is is happy go lucky care free attitude.

I thought at one point that this movie was like some kind of fever dream. I was home sick, my girlfriend had been binge-watching Shameless, my brother had started watching DB again, and then boom. I had to check IMDb to make completely sure I hadn't gone mad.
I also found out about this at the same time as shameless and thought I was losing it

Speed racer is not only one of the best pieces of cinema that has every put in theaters it is the single greatest adaptation of any media.
I hate this movie so bad that it made me hate the actors in this so much that I wouldn't watch shameless till now

I love the fact that Toriyama saw this movie, saw how horrifyingly bad it was, and came back out of retirement because he refused to let this be the last Dragon Ball movie.

Blades of the Immortal is my favorite live action anime or manga adapted film. It felt very much like a anime with the film basically being broken up into episodes. With each new opponent he has to fight being an episode with other parts sprinkled in to flesh out certain things. And the film follows that formula until the end when you get the huge epic final battle.

Hey! Speed Racer is an excellent homage and love letter to the source material and I love it! Except for Spridle and Chim Chim, they can go straight to hell.
Agreed, as a child speed racers visuals imprinted in my mind and I still love it to this day. And without speed racer then we wouldn't have the ninja assassin movie
I first saw it a couple of years ago and thought it was the best anime to film adaptation I'd ever seen. It was stylised like an anime, but just wasn't animated.
Yup, the craft is pretty excellent, and the story and themes are actually pretty damn cool, albeit hamfisted here and there. And yes, the odd kid-friendly moment here and there sours an otherwise fun watch.

I liked Speed Racer, it was nice family fun. I don't know the anime, so that might have something to do with it. Adaptation that was the worst imho is Space Battleship Yamato, awesome visual effects, but the actors were worse than a couple of students doing a fan film.
Speed Racer is actually really good though, it just got a bad rap because people didn't like the style of the visuals. Also Spritle. Yeah, I'll admit, he's annoying.
Part of the reason I enjoyed it so much was due to the visuals. It was like a live action anime.
Definitely one of my favorites. I think that Sprite is the result of an attempt at faithfulness combined with “kid appeal” but if they just fully leaned into the mature elements and left him and Chim-Chim by the way side, I’d dare say that Speed Racer would be a great movie.

Avatar is worse. Death Note is gotta be up there if not worse. At least Dragon Ball had the car fight scene and one or two decent parts in there. Still terrible though. A lot of the actors are good in other things too.

I think the root of the screenplay's problems (aside from the big Hollywood dump the producers left on it) is that the screenwriter asked "What is Dragon Ball as a series" rather than "Who is Goku?".
Goku is a nice guy, a buddy idiot that loves to fight, and is otherwise super chill. Hurt his friends and you see the fighting genius that he is.
Goku in a nutshell.
Make that a ghost mutant cyborg ninja pirate and it will still be Goku. BUT THE SCRIPT wanted Namekians, it wanted oozaru, it wanted ancient history.....................that it did not need. Makes you appreciate the simplicity of seeing Bulma and oolong on a motorcycle running away from a dinosaur in most anime opennings

Only solid anime or manga adaptation I have seen to this date is Blades of the Immortal. Can't say how well it is adapted never seen the anime or read the manga. But I thought the movie was very entertaining and it kind of felt like a manga or anime. With it almost feeling like the movie was split up into condensed episodes or chapters with him having to fight a different enemies over the course of the movie until the final huge battle. I haven't seen Battle Angel don't really have much of an interest to at all but hear mixed feelings about it.

@@TitanGoji Yea that would be something I would be interested in seeing how I never even knew there was 20 live action adaptations. And the only ones I have ever seen other then Blades of the Immortal where pretty bad. Like the AOT live action film which I felt had bad special effects like how the Titans where literally just people in poorly made skin tight suits and then FMA film which I didn't think was terrible just very very average and that it's impossible to adapt a 64 episode anime into a 2 hour movie. Never laughed so hard on an alternate interpretation of a Kamehameha as a First King of Hawaii being a projectile being shot towards a target as Goku follows behind. It's a like a Dragon Punch but with the King instead of a dragon.
The editing on that is godly.
Its funny Bulma and Goku are Jimmy and Fiona in "Shameless" and that started shooting a year after this came out, Showtime saw them in 2009s "Dragonball: Evolution" and instantly thought lets build our next hit show around them.

I bought this on a $2 bootleg, pirated, cam recorded video on DVD while I was deployed to Iraq and still felt ripped off after watching it.
I’m nearly a lifelong Dragon Ball fan. But I never watched 1 minute of this film. But I’d for sure watch you guys talk about it lol
But Goku didn’t know about Namek, and Piccolo didn’t know about the Oozaru form, and he never went to school, and what???
when i saw this at the theatre the movie actually cut out when goku gets knocked out in the final battle and it seemed like just a long blackout sequence till the ushers came in and told us to watch something else
Ok imho this is the worst of the worst adaptations I've ever seen. Like worse then Mario brothers cause that was entertaining, worse than deathnote or ghost in the shell cause at least those seemed to like the source material. Worst then even avatar cause at least that tried to follow the show albiet poorly. No this is the worst adaptation.
Your right that goku is dumb, but it's cause he lived in the wild all his life, he didn't go to school. In first dragon ball episode he flips bulma's car cause he thinks it's an evil monster. Goku also never cared about women in the show like at all he was kinda tricked into getting married in fact.
Bulma in this kinda comes off way too serious. she's gathering the Dragon balls to save her father while in the original she's doing it to find a boyfriend.
Yamcha comes off as a useless A hole and at the very least he was a somewhat useful character in the Dragon ball.
Original piccilo was basically the first real big bad guy goku ever faced. He destroys a city and goku only defeats him cause he headbutts him to death.
The Dragon balls don't need a strine to work. Goku transforms cause of moon and isn't connected to piccilo at all even picillos side kick lady is taken from another dragon ball character and she's more of a bumbling idiot.
Roshi is kinda done right, but he isn't as boastful.

I feel like if you called this movie wutang hustle or some generic kung fu movie name thing and changed the name of the characters then at the very least it would have seemed less bad. It would of seemed like a tribute to anime and kung fu movies, the fact that it's connected to dragon ball drags the movie down.
That Infinity War freeze frame had me absolutely howling 😂😂
Freeze frame is the best ending. Especially if someone jumps into the air first.
It seems like the prologues of recent movies/video games are more interesting than the tales they try to tell. If the movie focused on Piccolo trying to take over the earth with a group of Saiyans - it wouldn't be canon with the anime, but it would have been a much much better premise than the boring one they decided to go with.
