Heavy was designed with the shotgun in mind as another "primary" option, much like how Spy was designed with more revolver usage in mind. He has the shotgun for a reason. They were meant to be sort-of equal tools with different strengths (burst damage vs. high sustained damage), so I'm not surprised that you found the developer-intended playstyle to, you know, actually work.
If only it was a case for a revolver too, without using diamondback. Maybe then spy would've been an actual good class. Gunspy is just very fun, a shame it's a meme subclass.
@@ilyakusenco8151 Spy's revolver is actually a lot more passable than you might think. There's a reason Jontohil's video's meme on the fact that Spy actually has a revolver. The Diamondback is really overpowered but that doesn't take away from the fact that the revolver is still an okay option, especially because you can see who's at low health at any distance. @@CobaltIngot bro same I've been a shotgun on heavy advocate for a year now and now I don't think I'll be able to use family business without being called a trend chaser.
I have been vouching shotgun heavy for the longest time. It was how he was put in the game, he has the minigun for pre-meditated fights and the shotgun for unexpected battles, being covert and dodging the projectiles of Soldier & Demo. I had a fight where I was a Brass Beast / Shotgun heavy against a Direct Hit soldier in the Dustbowl stage 2 hallway. If I were to have revved my minigun I would have been shot 3 times and died, but because I had the shotgun, I was able to dodge two rockets and win the fight. I was then able to use the brass beast and mow down the unsuspecting people at the exit with my high DPS weapon. Both choices in my loadout were necessary to my success.
I agree But I also advocate for heavy to have a 4th weapon slot for lunchbox items. So that you can have a sandwich and shotgun and don't have to have them compete for a weapon slot
@@eur0be4t3r I mean at that rate, I kinda want to meme, and ask we also replace melee with lunchbox items, and let him use all 3 at once, just cosplay a dispenser.
@capperbuns That... No? A year is 12 months. Its been over a year since the pyro video. 10 videos in between means that thats less than a video a month. Im fine with that ofc, but lets not lie.
Oddly enough I always use the Beast and never do this. I always have the Dalokohs Bar and the Fists of Steel and just go maximum tank mode. (I mostly play 2Fort so that's probably why it works)
I played heavy for about 800 hours from 2014 to 2017. It was my most played class by a massive margin. In that time, my typical loadout was the tomislav, the chocolate bar, and the eviction notice. Hundreds of hours of roaming, jump reving, and sneaking behind teams. Loads of fun. When the pyro update came out in 2017, they re-worked a ton of weapons, and one of the things they touched was the eviction notice. I felt like it was such a core part of my playstyle that I actually quit playing, and haven't really played tf2 ever since.
Same thing happened to me, though I preferred the family business instead of the chocolate bar. It was a pretty strong loadout that was slept on a lot because that sandwich healing was seen, I think wrongly, as being heavy's strongest option. Miss the old weapons.
@@HeydenHarvey It's been a long time since I've played so I'm rusty on the details, the important thing it did is it gave a speed boost that wasn't quite as high as the gloves, but also didn't have the downside of taking extra damage. I'd use the eviction notice's speed boost to get a good position behind enemies, overheal with the chocolate bar and do ninja jump revving with the tomislav.

as one of the 624 heavy mains in existence, I find that most of the 'fun' I have, boils down to making people think I don't see them, then flicking to them when they don't expect it. tons of hackusations, but it feels good, almost like medic, to see the rest of my team do great and have fun plus it gets me to 150 points in a full game pretty consistently
Ill be honest its skill issue but I haven’t had success with lunchbox items. I just keep using them out of position or woops just so happens my team died and I got caught deepthroating a sandwich. So I started ditching lunchbox items for the shotguns. Specifically the Panic attack. Uncle dane is right.
It's definitely not optimal in all situations, but it's the most explosive playstyle you can get with heavy. In my opinion: His biggest problem isn't him being too slow or his situational optimal use, but his lack of a strong unique vocal point in his gameplay. Outside of positioning which half the cast shares as a key component he only has tracking as his mostly unique standpoint. Scout has movement, demo/soldier are mostly* projectile focused with their own high skills ceiling movement. Pyro has utility while *having* to play close quarters in fights. Medic, spy and engi are playing another game (Aka, other objectives that help the gamestate) Sniper is sniper Of course all these traits bleed into other classes but heavy is just so normal compared to the rest. I wrote this quite hastily so there's bound to be some parts i left out or didn't think about.
3:07 this is the reason I’ve always had this disliking for heavy (even though he’s my 2nd most played class) which is where the 300 health feels like nothing because 2 soldier rockets shot at my feet from the liberty launcher get rid of all of it, sometimes it feels like heavy deserves way more hp
As a heavy main, I think that having satisfying hit sounds and kill sounds is super important to getting the most dopamine from the minigun, especially considering how many hits you deal
100% my brother. I changed my hit sound to the old school quake 3 hit sound (donk!) and my kill sound to the Taco Bell gong. Life improved approximately 10,000% highly recommend
@@headcrab4 Ooooh I need to get that one. One of my favorite ones to use was the hardbass notes, just turn heavy into a one person music making machine.
Slighty unrelated but it also the reason why I like playing heavy in mvm. Destroying my so many robots and being of the better classes to slay giant. You show those giants robot who boss. Combine with sound effect of the giant robot deaths and heavy lines(not so giant now, tiny giant. Which I first thought "no use fighting now, tiny giant"). But again there a sense of power when heavy clicks.
This was a welcome surprise, as one of those five Heavy mains you mentioned. I confess I was getting a bit bored with Heavy gameplay, but over the last couple days I revisited Natascha, and the death threats I consistently get from opposing scouts has reinvigorated me.
You should see what I named my festive strange Natasha, after a while of people complaining to me, I've called it "Hey! Wait! I've got a new complaint". In all seriousness I use it as a support Minigun
I like playing Heavy but honestly I can't tell the difference between the Natascha and stock. I know Natascha slows and does less damage, but I honestly feel like my gameplay doesn't change with either weapon

@@timtam4596which is his fourth least played class iirc. Used to be fourth before at least kinda weird considering his roaming engi playstyle and all
dane out here spending 1 month of pure heavy play and experimentation to realize that heavy's stock loadout is what it is for a very good reason really goes to show how much psychological damage the lunchbox items have done to the TF2 community
Shotgun heavy actually pairs with the brass beast really well. Ordinarily the brass beast is way too restrictive with it's movement, but if you primarily use the shotgun and only use the BB when you get a positional advantage it's great. The 20% extra damage is bonkers.
Yep this has been the way I've played heavy for a long time now. That extra damage makes it feel extra good to punish people who overcommit thinking they have the health to beat you, and it's really fun to then whip out a shotgun and starting chasing the players that survive.
As a heavy main, you've somehow managed to find and thrive in a playstyle that's the exact opposite of everything I do. When I play heavy, it's usually with the intent of anchoring my team to stop them from getting rolled, which means I'll be positioning myself in cover near the front lines, and making sure my team is with me. To that end, I almost run Natascha, banana, and GRU. GRU and banana make life easier if there's no teleporter and dispenser/medic, and Natascha's slowdown effect makes both crowd control and divers much easier to deal with, which is a major problem for me with the other miniguns. I find it fun to hold the line and keep enemies off the objective, even if I don't get many kills because I'm doing suppression work. Survivability becomes less of an issue, which means that my biggest concern is actually ammo management. Miniguns chew through their very limited ammo _fast,_ and if there's no dispenser, only consistent source of ammo that won't take you away from the fight are divers trying to kill you. I'm not surprised you found the strong suit of Heavy's shotguns- if anything, I'm surprised it's not more commonly known, though I myself only swap to shotguns if there's no tele and I'm getting jumped during runback. I've never really considered a roaming heavy playstyle, mostly because he's so slow that getting anywhere meaningful takes forever, and at that point I'd rather swap to Scout or Pyro and have more fun doing the same thing. That said, I might have to give it another shot now...
shocker: le sentry gun man decided to evolve into mobile sentry; le dispensing man ditches demon magic healing and miniature ammo construction for a lil healthy snack on a battlefield.
One of my favourite things about fat scout is that, when your mini gun is basically your secondary, you can choose the weirder and more specialised options. I especially love using the Huo-Long Heater as an ambush tool. The Brass Beast can also be used as a dedicated defensive, stand-your-ground weapon.
Heavy is my most played class. But recently, I've been hesitant to play him as much because im worried i'll get bored of him. But this video made me realize that I always have the most fun with heavy when I use the shotgun. And that im not hindering myself by using it. The pieces have always been in place. The shotgun on heavy is good. We were just too gluttonous to see.
I love everything about this video, some people may not like it but I appreciate it. And "shotgun heavy" phase, I agree with and went "YES" once it was brought up. Not too long ago I made a 2 part tutorial about playing *Stock Heavy* based on how I've played stock heavy over the months and how I understood it, and that shotgun heavy phase brought me back to how I expressed using the shotgun to co-side with the minigun to actually make it work (somehow). And when you said that you were taking "bad classes" and putting them under a new perspective hits right with me, because the reason that stock tutorial for Heavy exists is to give players a (ironically) new experience playing Heavy only with stock, and also to help understand how Heavy was originally designed. All with the style of old 2008-9 tf2 tutorials. By far, this is now my favorite video of yours and I can see the pattern of making every other least played class as your temporary main. And also is it a coincidence that my next stock tutorial will be for Engineer? When my previous one was for Heavy? Could be just timing. Edit: it is out now, nobody asked but it out.
phase 3 is just using the shotgun the way it was designed to be used with heavy. So many people complain about how slow and clunky heavies minigun is because everyone is so used to running a lunchbox item they completely forget that the shotgun is STOCK for a reason. It was given to heavy to help him clear corners and engage targets in more "mobile" situations the minigun is for holding a specific line of sight where other factors help nullify its crippling downsides. Its so liberating to see uncle dane realize this and comment on it because damn even some heavy "main" youtubers don't realize this is or completely forget because healing 300 health is just that strong.
I've been a Heavy main for a few years now. I think you hit the nail on the head with a lot of your criticisms of the class design overall. I'd also say it helps a lot to have an "ork brain" when you play this class, and by that I mean I like sustained fire weapons because I enjoy just holding down a button to make a lot of dakka happen.
As someone who had (and still does) trouble getting reliable hits with soldier or demoman, the appeal that the DAKKA of sustained mingun fire was also there for me as well. Clicking on someone and seeing their gibs just ain't the same, not the same kind of dramatic buildup and release upon killing the enemy.
15:50 THANK YOU for realizing how awesome the holiday punch is - I love making people laugh then taunt killing them. I will always equip the holiday punch and they have been and will be my favorite gloves. I spent like 10$ on really good strange gloves lol
Ironically, I started maining engineer recently.... The universe balances itself.... Also, the clip that you showed of why heavy is" boring" looks like what I would call peak TF2...
13:02 | *He actually called it a magazine, an online game youtuber referred to a weapon's ammunition capacity as what it actually is. Someone mark the calendar, this is history.*
One of the things i find most annoying while playing heavy (and in general …) are snipers; with a shotgun not only are you less of a sitting duck but you can try to aimpunch the sniper to make him miss gaining you time to try and get cover. Not that it is a reliable counter, but at least it gives you a way to influence the interaction rather then just hoping the sniper misses which at least feels a lot better
Yuuup, nothing's better as a heavy player than unloading The Family Business into a sniper and either see him die with a heavy bolting towards him or him trying to gain better cover to take you out, I like the feeling that I made that happen, haha.
I think heavy having a "heavy only" shotgun is a pretty obvious hint to this conclusion but i cant say ive ever thought of heavy in this way despite the fact.
Not only does the Tomislav offer a huge advantage with the faster, silent rev, but the higher accuracy also translates directly to higher DPS unless you're either at point-blank range, which you won't be because of the slow and loud spin-up, or you're up against a dense crowd, which basically never happens in TF2.
completely delusional, the better accuracy absolutely fucks you over at close to medium range and isn't desirable at all, similar to how the tighter spread of the shortstop screws over scouts trying to fight at their preferred range the tomislav is absolutely inferior to stock in DPS at every range besides medium to long, and as a heavy you should do your best to avoid engaging enemies at these ranges anyway if you feel that the tomislav is better, that's probably because you're unrevving your minigun all the time, which is a bad thing since your minigun does more damage the longer it stays revved up
@@Felipe-yv4bcare.. are you real? nobody wants to be a slow, easy to pick on target by explosive classes, it's the entire reason heavy was overshadowed. and heavy doesn't have neither of the tools required to flank and get into close range, the main flankers either have good mobility or some other tool that lets them get by unnoticed (spy) and since chokepoints involve a lot of medium range combat, you're gonna be preferring tomislav. also.. how does tighter spread fuck you over, again? you need to aim SLIGHTLY more precisely? oh the horrors!
@@mishagaming1075 the level of precision required to do more damage with the tomislav at close to medium range makes it almost always do less damage than stock, and you won't be doing more damage anyway since you're a tomislav main unrevving all the fucking time not getting that damage ramp up i sincerely fail to understand what does any of your other points have anything to do with what I said
13:15 I'm really glad you took a moment to mention the "base loadout" of just taking the minigun AND shotgun. I've always appreciated keeping a base loadout on every character as it reminds me the purpose of even switching weapons in the first place, while simultaneously showing how strong the class already is. I had basically formulated the same thought you would end up explaining in Phase 4 as I watched Phase 3 - if minigun slow then use shotgun until slow not bad. In the same way Pyro and Soldier really appreciate the shotgun due to their unique primaries, heavy ALSO appreciates the shotgun due to his primary. Tbh, I'm rather surprised the Medic never received some kind of "single shot secondary" like his compatriots did, while the Sniper received a full-auto secondary, something every full-auto primary class was seeking to avoid.
as one of the very few heavy mains, seeing dane begin to realise that Fat Scout...STILL HAS A MINIGUN. YOU'RE BEGINNING TO SEE. THE DOTS ARE CONNECTING. THE NEURONS ARE FIRING.
I like that uncle dane has continued the 'I Main...' now series aside from that one april fool's joke. It gives people your opinions on each class and explores the sheer depth of TF2.
My favorite Heavy loadout is the brass beast, panic attack, and warriors spirit. The brass beast allows the heavy to tank more damage and mow down enemies at a longer range and instantly delete someone at close range. However, the rev speed doesn't allow the heavy to keep up with his targets, requiring him to be defensive and let others come to him. The panic attack allows you to push forward and get into the perfect position for people to walk into you without the danger of that long rev, and the quick switch speed alows you to fall back on it after unreving. The Warriors Spirt allows you deal a risky but devastating combo with the panic attack that is super satisfying. This helps the heavy keep his high burst damage when up close since you will be using the panic attack, which already requires you to get up really close to your enemies. As long as you don't equip the weapon while you are about to take a high amount of damage, the downside does not matter. That's just how I have fun as heavy.
Hello, I am a Heavy main. I have loved this class ever since I started playing the game. You might ask what drives me to play Heavy since TF2 is a movement game and the Heavy is fat and slow. As much as I love going fast in videogames, I can't ignore the fact that I am MUCH more of an "Aimer Andy". You might also be asking why I don't just play Sniper since that is the class that I can get all of my juicy headshots on. Well, Sniper is just not an interactive class, that's really it. But also, you would be very surprised at all of the INSANELY stupid spots that Heavy can get to. I both enjoy playing Heavy as intended, as well as just sitting in funny spots and mowing down unsuspecting victims. There is just something very satisfying about tracking your enemies and killing them in seconds. It's also very satisfying when you outsmart your enemies by simply positioning better than them. Yeah sure, it's not a flashy class. I don't have access to a bunch of super cool looking plays as Heavy. But I get enough out of it just knowing that I either outsmarted another player, or aimed better than them. It may not be as cool and flashy, but what it lacks in flash, it makes up for with more calculated plays that you can do completely on your own if you wanted to. All of that......and the pootis pow is just amazing. I love screwing around with it!
damnnmn this is so cool, im a soldier main but seing this perspective even as an ultrakill fan(super fast game) is a cool way to see it keep it up shasha lover!!
Heavy is real fun, usually, sometimes. Issue is that so much counters him. Snipers? He's a free headshot. Spies? The most free backsab ever. Demos? The biggest target in the world. Scouts? Runs circles around you. Soldiers? Eats you alive like you're an MRE.
@@Appletank8 Oh, thanks I did not know, even if be backstab is not that frustrating to me, but the sniper mains that quick shoot you from the other side of the map...yeah
this is essentially how I've been using the brass beast whenever I play heavy. family business+fists of steel get me into position, gun mows people for a couple of seconds when I'm in position, repeat until my team pushes. its a lot more polarizing with BB but its so much more funny when people think you are a sitting duck because your loud ass gun isnt making noise anymore and decide to turn the corner into your shotgun
I started being revved up constantly even loudly with the brass beast and minigun and it just works. Its really funny seeing a heavy jumprev around a corner when you've been standing there for 5 seconds all revved up, like what goes on in their head thinking they'll accomplish? People straight up ignore the loud wirring sound. In close quarters hardly any class beat a REVVED UP heavy, but most will beat a non revved heavy.
I actually figured out the shotgun heavy loadout on accident, because I loved playing fat scout, but would occasionally say "Well, the mini gun works better in this specific context, what's stopping me from using it? Nothing " i never even realized that I could just play regular roaming heavy with a shotgun and use them both simultaneously.
Had the same experience. Shotgun changes how you play the class so much that I now think the sandvich is poorly designed. Also GRU is a great combat tool if your opponent is cornered.

why is berd here??
I agree
But I also advocate for heavy to have a 4th weapon slot for lunchbox items.
So that you can have a sandwich and shotgun and don't have to have them compete for a weapon slot

Uncle Dane has figured out how brass beast heavies play the game
80% shotgun
20% utter destruction with the beast
Gosh darn comp players ruined the eviction notice.
What did the notice used to do
@@HeydenHarvey It's been a long time since I've played so I'm rusty on the details, the important thing it did is it gave a speed boost that wasn't quite as high as the gloves, but also didn't have the downside of taking extra damage. plus it gets me to 150 points in a full game pretty consistently
psychological manipulation is ALWAYS an option in games!
The most optimal heavy playstyle just being putting away the lunchbox item is weirdly one of the most satisfying things I've learnt about this game
For real
Optimal is an overstatement, its just the easiest way to use heavy in a pub.
No one said this is the most optimal playstyle, its just one that fits dane the most
It's definitely not optimal in all situations, but it's the most explosive playstyle you can get with heavy.
In my opinion:
His biggest problem isn't him being too slow or his situational optimal use, but his lack of a strong unique vocal point in his gameplay. Outside of positioning which half the cast shares as a key component he only has tracking as his mostly unique standpoint.
Scout has movement,
demo/soldier are mostly* projectile focused with their own high skills ceiling movement.
Pyro has utility while *having* to play close quarters in fights.
Medic, spy and engi are playing another game
(Aka, other objectives that help the gamestate)

Of course all these traits bleed into other classes but heavy is just so normal compared to the rest.

Ordinarily the brass beast is way too restrictive with it's movement, but if you primarily use the shotgun and only use the BB when you get a positional advantage it's great.
The 20% extra damage is bonkers.
Yea I saw the Bad Weapons Academy on Brass Beast, I just gotta get better at Shotgun gameplay
Yep this has been the way I've played heavy for a long time now. That extra damage makes it feel extra good to punish people who overcommit thinking they have the health to beat you, and it's really fun to then whip out a shotgun and starting chasing the players that survive.

@@Diesel-wh1th thank you for spreading the good word, mate
People who agree with having 4 Heavy slots, rise up.

Not only does the Tomislav offer a huge advantage with the faster, silent rev, but the higher accuracy also translates directly to higher DPS unless you're either at point-blank range, which you won't be because of the slow and loud spin-up, or you're up against a dense crowd, which basically never happens in TF2.
completely delusional, the better accuracy absolutely fucks you over at close to medium range and isn't desirable at all, similar to how the tighter spread of the shortstop screws over scouts trying to fight at their preferred range
the tomislav is absolutely inferior to stock in DPS at every range besides medium to long, and as a heavy you should do your best to avoid engaging enemies at these ranges anyway
if you feel that the tomislav is better, that's probably because you're unrevving your minigun all the time, which is a bad thing since your minigun does more damage the longer it stays revved up
@@Felipe-yv4bcare.. are you real?
nobody wants to be a slow, easy to pick on target by explosive classes, it's the entire reason heavy was overshadowed.
and heavy doesn't have neither of the tools required to flank and get into close range, the main flankers either have good mobility or some other tool that lets them get by unnoticed (spy)
and since chokepoints involve a lot of medium range combat, you're gonna be preferring tomislav.
also.. how does tighter spread fuck you over, again? you need to aim SLIGHTLY more precisely? oh the horrors!
@@mishagaming1075 the level of precision required to do more damage with the tomislav at close to medium range makes it almost always do less damage than stock, and you won't be doing more damage anyway since you're a tomislav main unrevving all the fucking time not getting that damage ramp up

We had fat scout, now uncle dane introduced us to hybrid engineer. Shoot with the shotgun in 1v1s, *become the sentry gun* in groups

I love screwing around with it!
damnnmn this is so cool, im a soldier main but seing this perspective even as an ultrakill fan(super fast game) is a cool way to see it keep it up shasha lover!!
i got into the habit of twitch crouching a lot when revved up and firing, especially in heavy on heavy fights, do you think it does anything?
@@sdfggdfg5fgdfg hypothetically if you crouch and uncrouch you can throw of sniper aim
Bro got tired of building the sentry and became the sentry
When you have a crusaders crossbow medic and equip the Brass beast you literally become a Sentry+rescue ranger duo
04:00 yep, that's why I always wanted Heavy to have 1000 health, so it actually make him survive 5 seconds more before getting backstab or headshot
actually backstabs always do like 3x your max health, so more hp wouldn't do anything
@@Appletank8That'd be perfect, you buff the heavy without nerfing the spy
@@Appletank8 Oh, thanks I did not know, even if be backstab is not that frustrating to me, but the sniper mains that quick shoot you from the other side of the map...yeah
@@foxygameur_4547its 3x your max health WHILE being a critical hit, so in reality it's 9x your max health
Me and my best friend watching this on the couch rn bro
you should kiss
yeah you guys should kiss
Dont leave us in the dark did you two kiss??
Seems like they indeed kissed and now are busy with something more intimate
hey can we please get an update on wheather you kissed?
HEAVY HAS A SHOTGUN!
I love that I was right on this. Gonna play heavy like this as soon as I get a tomyslav
this is essentially how I've been using the brass beast whenever I play heavy. family business+fists of steel get me into position, gun mows people for a couple of seconds when I'm in position, repeat until my team pushes. its a lot more polarizing with BB but its so much more funny when people think you are a sitting duck because your loud ass gun isnt making noise anymore and decide to turn the corner into your shotgun
I used to think sniper needed balances changes but i never really processed how much heavy needed an update
I had the same epiphany too
It's almost as if heavy was designed to work that way
@@typhoon1575 And to think that we all just ignore that that's exactly the case because the meta is the sandvich/banana
Can't wait for "I mained every other class until engineer became my least played class"
Uncle Dane is NOT avoiding the allegations with this one
What allegations?
@@dr.cheeze5382oh you dont wanna know... the horrors..
@@dr.cheeze5382 some.. TRULY polarizing things...
He was caught chatting with a Heavy main in the Twitch whisper system... trully despicable acts...@@dr.cheeze5382
Whens the "I Main Engineer Now" Duncle Dane?
So you just cut out the middle man and decided to be the sentry?
Had the same experience. Shotgun changes how you play the class so much that I now think the sandvich is poorly designed. Also GRU is a great combat tool if your opponent is cornered.
