Another enjoyable video!👍👍Here in Shetland the darkness lasts for longer and during the winter solstice the sunrise was at 9.10 am., and the sunset was at 14.58 pm.. Thankfully the daylight is lasting a bit longer each day now.👍👍 In my opinion, Grizzly bears have the right idea about how to cope with the winter.😁

As an average Brit, I knew very little about John Paul Jones until we stumbled on his birthplace last year while looking for somewhere to walk withbour dogs. As it is a tiny building my wife volunteered to stay in the van with the dogs thinking that I'd only be in there for 15 minues. She wasn't happy when I returned well over an hours later.

I was in Iceland during the longest day of the year. It was fun and quite a novelty and the B&B i stayed in had blackout curtains so that we could get some sleep. But I would imagine the opposite, 19 hours of darkness, would be quite daunting, esp if you were there for quite a few of those days!

  • @jansturk
    @jansturk 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

I am used to different day length during the year because I live in Huddinge in Sweden.
It is located at approximately 59 degrees north latitude.
I looked at the northernmost part of Scotland, a place called Durness.
It is located at approximately 58 degrees north latitude.
But where I was born and raised in northern Sweden just south of the Arctic Circle at 66 degrees north latitude, the sun is only up for about 1 hour at the winter solstice.
On the summer solstice, the sun is up 23 hours a day.
I was never affected so much by the different day lengths.
I probably got used to it as a small child.
I think it's quite cozy when it's dark.
    Sleep a little more then.
In the summer I have dark curtains.

As Ruth was showing the gifts that she will be giving in the future from the items that she's purchasing now, I was reminded of my beloved late wife who did the same thing. She was always thinking of others, of how this or that item would please someone whom she had in mind. It is a warmth and kindness that many women possess.
And if that woman is your wife, you are very fortunate indeed.

    Lovely video, once again.
Where I live (in the Netherlands) kale is very much a winter dish. But we make a mash with potatoes and shredded kale (boerenkool): boil the patatoes and kale in the same pan, until the patatoes are done. Get rid of the water (can be used for making a gravy later) and then just mash it with a bit of milk, butter (or margarine), salt and pepper.
It’s usually eaten with a smoked sausage or fried bacon.

Another interesting video. It brought back memories of staying on a farm near Beeswing about 20 years ago but it was summertime and warmish so a different experience to your visit. I was just noticing the nights beginning to stretch out again as I tend to walk my dog just as the sun sets and it has been getting later compared to when my wife usually returns from work. We should always give a thought to those people who live in Shetland with regards daylight. I checked the daylight times here in central Scotland sunrise 8.45 am & set at 16.10 pm but Lerwick Shetland sunrise 9.01 am sets 15.24 pm a whole hour of darkness more than here. I used to fish for Sea Trout on the rivers in Aberdeenshire through the night in summertime and it barely ever seemed to get truly dark but when the sun rose again it gave me enough energy boost to drive home safely with no sleep. I forgot to wish you a Happy New Year and hope it is a good one for you. I used to see the Northern lights when I stayed in Stuartfield near Peterhead.

The Loch Arthur Farm Shop looks so familiar . It looks very similar to farm shops I have visited in Scotland between Pitlochry and Kenmore and throughout Aberdeenshire. I'm sure that they are of a very similar design and there's a sort of template which a lot of farm shops follow. That's probably where the similarity ends though.

Also, the Corn Mill there is so rustic & well preserved. As well as being very interesting! Old John would have especially loved the Mill, since it was milling & providing oats for his Porridge! The possible key to his longevity? LOL. One of his best kept secrets no doubt! Sorry, lass, I had to sneak in a wee remembrance of Old John, in his memory, for the New Year! The wee Cottage of John Paul Jones' birthplace was charming, along with the interesting information on his Naval contributions & being considered the 'father' of the U.S. Navy. A fine Scottish lad! Who knew?
All this, along with such a beautiful windswept beach nearby! However, I think I'll pass on the Seaweed snack though. It looks just a wee bit too 'rubbery' for me! Aye! Well. let's just say I'm doing my part for the environment by leaving the sea weed for the sea life to dwell in. LOL. Lastly, your Farm Shop dinner looked delicious..minus the kale? For me, that's right up there with the sea weed! LOL. I would love the smoky Cheddar cheeses though, along with the Chutney & focaccia bread! Mmmm! Delectable! I know summer seems a long way off, but you must do a longest day video, travelling to somewhere in the far north, where it hardly gets dark at all.
Did you go to Carsethorn before Southerness ? I have never eaten seaweed, but a very observant friend spotted some samphire there. Posh restaurants pay a fortune for it. Very salty, just like eating the sea in green vegetable form.

I went to Stonehenge in England! It was actually the Summer Solstice then! Nothing unusual happened, but we did see what we later called Stonehenge Sheep!😂 Those stones seemed to be larger than these. Is there an official comparison? I also thought of the 12 Disciples when you showed the signs. 😊 Wish I could visit the UK again! You’re bringing back a lot of memories. Thank you ❤

Commenting on-the-fly while watching: I love the dark side of the year, in-general, so obviously the Winter Solstice is The Great Glorious Time of Hope, Hiding in the Darkness ❤️🥰!
I would love the super-short days on the solstice, where you are … and it must be *insane* up in the Orkney Isles 🥰!
The trick is to avoid the *Summer* Solstice 😂 - high latitudes are very good on the one end, but very bad on the other 😅!
I haven’t pulled up the map, yet, but southern Scotland is what? 45 degrees north?
I am originally from the Great Lakes area (south end of Lake Michigan), so I do remember fairly wide swings in the length of day 🙂. I miss it 🥰!

Hi Ruth, that was a great looking farm shop, I love a tasty piece of cheese. It's a lovely area down there, well, apart from all the Irish truckers on the a75. That was one of the bonuses of driving at night, getting parked in a dark sky part of the country. I think there will be a few rats nibbling on the bread when you go to France, it's the smell that gets to you.

If you are going to be near Colmar, in Alsace, while you are in France, I recommend the Public Market on a Wednesday or Saturday for fresh fruits, vegetables, pastries, and CHEESES!!! Fantastic Bleu de Gex and even a Morbier with some Margeurite plums were my exciting finds when I was there in 2004. I know that was 20 years ago, but I’m sure they still have Market Days. A great local dish is Choucroute, which I highly recommend with a carafe of Riesling! Bon appetite!
