Birds of Paradise are one of my favorite flowers. We've grown them although they don't love our climate (Nevada)...we're just too hot for them. Your painting is gorgeous...I love the bokeh background! I've been debating about this stamp set but I think I might have to have it! LOL Have to give this one a try! Thanks for sharing!
Bird of paradise are such colorful flowers. You captured the vibrant colors perfectly. I’ve seen a number of ways to do a bokeh background, but this technique is quite unique. I don’t have w/c pencils per se, but I will try with Inktense pencils. Thanks!
Hi, Sandy - One day I might give this a try. It is a beautiful card! I looked up "bokeh" and found the second syllable to be more like "kay" than "kuh." You always inspire me and say "woof woof" back to your dog for me! L in PA
I have to get a strainer like that. I always stress over my creations before I make them. So, I put off making them because I don't think they will come out good. But they always end up great. I am learning to be more confident in my creations.
Thank you for this great idea for a background! I always struggle to come up with a calm background for colored pencils and/or watercolor pencils that allows the focal point to shine. Love your work!
I love this bokeh technique.. i have inktense and supracolors.. just have to hunt for my tea Strainer and use it in my current coloring book bagel. Strelitzia is what we call those flowers. They are beautiful flowers..and the part with all the different colors (sometimes it is greyish) has another flower in it! (Sometimes it holds several).
Your bird of paradise flower looks like the ones growing in my family's original home in the Caribbean. I am going to try your Bokeh technique of creating light by developing its shadows. This is a beautiful piece of art.
I'm going to risk saying this, but I like how you addressed crafters. I think craft and art works in tandem, and iF you are avoiding stress you are doing something closer to craft, while pursuing art invites stress. I myself am a writer and I see a difference between being seen as a writer and being a writer.
Beautiful, I'm going to try this background. Thanks for sharing! I need to start/finish all your classes that I have of yours. I've seen you use the tea strainer many times and want to give that a go as well.
Just stunning! I recently dragged out my wc pencils - they have been neglected for so long! I like the control I get with them. TFS other ideas I can use them for.
WOW!! You’ve shown me something I’ve never seen before! Never have I ever seen a tea strainer used with watercolor pencil. It looks like a good way to do splatter, too. Much of the same effect could be had with wet in wet watercolor?
That's too pretty to use as a card, it is a work of art! Thanks for sharing your talent and techniques with us.
Hi Sandy! This is Stunning. Love, love, love it. Bokeh is pronounced Bouquet. Sending Hugs!

Lmao your dog has great timing. I’m going to try this I love the look.
Your image turned out amazing.
BOH-kə or /ˈboʊkeɪ/ BOH-ka according to wikipedia. The phonetic spelling is helpful.
Lovely painting!
That is absolutely beautiful!

lovely! the online text to speech thingie says BOW-KAY :D I tied a bow for Kay
That one will be easy for me to remember!! : ))) My name is Kay!

I’ve used it a bunch. Splatter might be hard, not enough larger chunks of pigment for that.
This is so gorgeous. The spots actually look like sun flares from a camera lens. Absolutely stunning. What paper did you use?
Arches cold press
