    Lovely painting. I have been practicing bokeh for a few months now. I seem to get a better result by laying down my background washes, then when the painting is dry, lift off pigment using a stencil brush or sponge and a stencil with differing size circles.
    The bokeh is not so stark white and you get a staining from the background wash. Some pigments are hard to remove especially if they are permanent, but still effective.

      Thank you.🌹 Heinrich used an Art Secret Silicone Pastel Blending brush for this. The silicone brushes are easy to clean, and more rigid than a normal paint brushes. You can find different kinds of pastel blending brushes on Amazon. Some are made from silicone, and others from plastic. Both kinds work rather well. if, however, you want to mask out fine, detailed work, we would recommend that you get a thin, synthetic brush. You can coat the brush with a thin layer of soap and then it will clean easily afterwards. I hope this is helpful:)

      I think I didn't answer your question clearly😮. Aologies, YES, there are other methods. You can use a synthetic brush, or a magic sponge. Those work better if you have a plastic drawing stencil to help guide you to make the circles. You can also use a q-tip. With the q-tip, you have to change to a new one regularly, so as not to transfer paint onto the new circle you want to make.

I say this because the twigs in the background are in the most part alot thicker which made the foreground twig not ‘balanced’ right. Sorry, it was niggling for me to say something. Lol. Thank you, that was a great demo with very clear narration. I have one question though. Why does the quin gold you use, look red? My quin gold is a yellow/gold and doesn't resemble red at all. Is it just because I use a different variety of watercolour paint?

    • @OurWatercolourJourney
      @OurWatercolourJourney  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much! Heinrich used Quin Gold Deep from QOR [Golden], which is a much redder hue than Quinacridone Gold [W&N], which is yellower. Many of these colours have 3 shades: light, medium, and deep. As far as I know, Quin Gold only comes in plain Quin Gold like the one from W&N and then Quin Gold Deep like the one from QOR. It seems that the QOR colours can be very intense, and the QG Deep is almost like Burnt Sienna. I hope the explanation helps:)

    Did you put someting on the circles? The colors didn't go to circles

    • @OurWatercolourJourney
      @OurWatercolourJourney  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used masking fluid to mask out some of the circles, and I used a stencil brush to lift off some of the paint. The masking fluid protected the circles, so the colour didn't flow into them. Once I have finished the background, I tookthe masking fluid off and then used the stencil brush. There are other ways to make the bokeh circles, but this was the method I used for this painting.

    How do you keep the painting wet all the time?

    • @OurWatercolourJourney
      @OurWatercolourJourney  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. You need to make sure that you wet the paper thoroughly before you start. If you are in a hot environment, the paper will dry faster, so make sure that you wet it properly. You can also use a small spray bottle to re-wet the surface, but it might make marks that you don't want. Best thing, use a mop brush, or a hake brush to wet the paper and work as fast as possible. If the paper is getting too dry, LEAVE IT TO DRY COMPLETELY, then wet it gently with a mop or hake again. Work gently, so as not to disturb the existing colors.

    I just love this painting but tell me, why the masking fluid? He appears to be an experienced painter. There must be other more organic ways to create this same painting, and cheaper too. Masking fluid is expensive! What did the master painters do before masking fluid???

    • @OurWatercolourJourney
      @OurWatercolourJourney  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. Masking fluid just made it more convenient to preserve the whiteness of the paper. Old masters probably just did some negative painting...Many beginners prefer using masking fluid, as it saves time and you don't have to be so precise. We try to teach beginners how to use different tools of the trade to help them in their creative process. That is the purpose of this channel. I am sure the old masters used various other tools to help. Even Da Vinci traced the drawings for his paintings onto a canvas with charcoal powder.

  • @jeleavitt

    This is a lovely painting but I feel the process has been incompletely explained and that if I follow the demonstration I will be disappointed with the result. In the video the difference in the painting at 8:21 and 8:29 minutes is significant. At 8:29 there are numerous “blurred“ pale blue circles, particularly in the right lower quadrant of the painting, that were not there several seconds ago and are not accounted for in the demonstration. They add significantly to the bokeh quality of the final result. Could you at least add in the notes how theses were =accomplished.

    • @OurWatercolourJourney
      @OurWatercolourJourney  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for your feedback. The discrepancies came in with the editing, as the original video was quite long. We will have a look at the points you have indicated and get back to you as soon as possible:)

    • @OurWatercolourJourney
      @OurWatercolourJourney  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello again, Jane-O:) I had a look at the video and I will explain what happened:
      1. If you look at the painting before the bokeh was made, the pale blue colour in the lower righthand corner was created with the mixing of the different background colours that he used. Some colours are harder to lift out than others, so the circles in that corner look a bit different and give a softer effect.
      2. Because the real time lifting process took about 45 minutes, we didn't want to bore viewers with showing how he made every circle. We showed how they were made in the beginning, to demonstrate the process, and then what it looked like further on in the process. The idea was that viewers could make the circles wherever they wanted, as their paintings would naturally look a bit different from the demonstration painting.
      3. At about the time markers you mentioned, [8:21] I explain that you can press harder or softer to create the different tones in the circles. The harder you press, the more of the background paint you will lift and the 'whiter' the circles will look. The softer you work, the less paint you will lift, and that's how you get the circles to show different colours, as it only lifts the top layer of the background paint. He also used some of the background paint to fill in some of the circles that he felt were too white [8:38].
      We have several videos that explain the process in more detail, I hope that you will have a look at those and that you will find them helpful:
      1. th-cam.com/video/hGag1snM5wk/w-d-xo.html
      2. th-cam.com/video/QGKysMbCdnU/w-d-xo.html
