Tbh I think you should tell him how you feel. He already told you how he felt at that time and it hasn't damaged your friendship severely right? I know saying your feelings isn't the easiest thing but if you just say to him "I like you... It's okay if you don't feel the same I just wanted to get my feelings out there". A very close friend of mine confessed his feelings a few days back. I do not like him back but since he is such a good friend I also didn't end the friendship , sometimes I feel weird and doubtful whether or not I did the right thing by continuing the friendship. Back when I met him we didn't get to hangout together much and our situation made me automatically assume he'd never be interested so I didn't think to even look for anything out of the ordinary.
I never noticed him looking at me or anything and we never were alone long enough to really talk, open up and get close as friends.
If he did have any feeling towards me we both hid our feelings very well.
The only time he showed a sign of protectiveness was the one time he scolded me but I'm not sure if it was protectiveness or he was just irritated.
