Exploring Atlantic City, New Jersey - Pt 1 | Where Is It Now?

- In today's adventure, we're starting a multi-part exploration of the dying Atlantic City, New Jersey boardwalk area. In 2014, 4 of the city's 12 boardwalk casinos closed in 1 year. A year and a half later, a 5th one closed. As of 2023, only 3 have re-opened and in different stages of "open" as well. The city wants you to believe that it's on the rebound and is back and approaching better than ever, but I have a hard time believe that. Let's take a look and see what we can find.

I'm not going to lie I was sad when you weren't going to get your coffee but then was super happy that you did get one. What a really nice lady
Just a thought, but wouldn't one get a better picture of the state of a beach resort town like Atlantic City and its hotels / attractions in the summer? I grew up near AC...nobody ever went there in the winter, even in its heyday.
Agreed. I was wondering the same thing. A lot of these boarded up businesses are open in the summer. Still, per my prior comment, the place still looks depressing.
Absolutely. I go there every August and that place is packed. Most of those businesses close for the winter because there is no tourism because of the cold.
Theres the big question how do you maintain tourism during the winter months
The video shows one side & its shot during the colder months. Just check the hotel rates there & compare them to what they charge in the summer. You will be surprised. It is a popular place because of the beach.
ac is full of excitement worlds largest water park set to open in july
31:14 Wrong! It was actually connected to the Sands hotel & casino to which was demolished in 2009. Right next to the Claridge hotel.
Oh wow, no kidding! I found absolutely no information anywhere that helped me figure out more about that building. Hugely helpful. Thanks!
That was the people mover that took you from the boardwalk to Sands and Claridge Casino.
I remember my parents talking me there in the 60’s to see relatives. Used to go gambling there in the 80’s . But now in the 2020’s when I go there I think to myself that it’s just a matter of time till it just turns into being a run down beach town. That’s sad . Atlantic City will always be a special place for me. It’s in such sorry shape anymore.
Haha what a coincidence. I was just watching your Baltimore videos and thinking what a sad place the inner harbor had become. Then you come expose my home town ( AC Area, I live in a neighboring township just outside of AC). AC has been in decline for much of my lifetime.
The big Disposable funds $ are gone since 2008. The bus loads of retired people and extra fun money gone . Not coming back either. Once u see closed pizza shops or Chinese restaurants u can only read last rights to the areas
It was the time of year he shot. The town does extremely well from late may thru Sept. Check the rates online. Also many small businesses have opened and are thriving. The waterpark opened in July. Maybe you should visit again now in season.
Right! Forty five years later and the same potholes.
That house of blues was a fantastic small venue. Great shows and acts. I saw at least 20 shows there. Hard rock gets all the big name musical acts now days. That along with Ocean, Borgata and Tropicana are the busiest, hippest spots.
Resorts Casino used to be two old hotels that were connected by the tunnel. Chalfont-Haddon Hall was the name. Only one hotel still stands.
The only way to make AC a safe zone is to completely evacuate the ghettos.
AC is a strange place indeed. There is opulence and blight just blocks from each other. I do like the resorts there. I stayed at 2 and visited several others. It was a fun experience. The beach is also really nice, contrary to popular belief. I feel the city is generally popular given the prohibitive rates the resorts charge!
I'm originally from the Atlantic City area. I was born and raised in Pleasantville NJ just outside of Atlantic City. And I've worked in 4 of the casinos over a 13-year span
It's the time of the year you went. Summertime is pretty busy. But I do agree everything looks beat up/ rundown. 10 years ago it looked in better shape. Even that mall was busy and full. One thing Vegas has over AC is the weather. AC gets snow and rain which may damage the buildings over time.
I remember being in that mall as a kid in highschool and its was jammed packed we had so many good times, Im praying that AC starts to climb back
The Claridge Hotel used to have sunken gardens and elaborate fountains in front of it, which are now barred off and vacant.
This is a good example of when we all suggest things like “they should turn it into an arcade or a gym or family entertainment”… sometimes it’s just so weird it doesn’t work. The boxing in the buffet with all the buffet aspects still there was like a zombie movie and this building is the repurposed safe space that the zombies can’t get into.
boardwalk needs to be new NJ government not giving the money back
Another great video! I spent some time there growing up. I remember AC was in decline back in the mid to late 1980's. I guess things don't change much. Too much crime, businesses failing ... you know how it goes.
My family liked to go to AC on weekends to play the slots, see a show, and have dinner. I recognize the closed down buffet from the beginning of the video. I was along for the ride because I hate the casinos. AC was always a strip of land along the shore with casinos and junk stores and pretty much a dangerous dump everywhere else. I suspect Covid and the crap economy have finished it.
That assumption would be incorrect
You should visit a landmark hero sandwich place called the White House. It's been there since the 1940's. Every time I visited AC to try it, there was a line to get in or just order your food.
I was there a year ago and a lot of those abandoned places were open....
When I was a kid,we used to go to Atlantic City every summer. It really went down hill when they tried to make it Last Vagas of the east. So many memories. Shame.
Come back in the summer; it’s a shore town.
DYING ATLANTIC CITY 😂😂COME IN MONTH YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO WALK WITHOUT BUMPING SOMEONE!! LOVE MY HOME TOWN !!! DOAC!! THISGUYISAWERIDO
in a month you and i will be bumping uglies am i right?
You went on the off season. Slot of the businesses on the boardwalk are seasonal. This video will be COMPLETELY DIFFERENT if you go during the peak season.
I once found a boxing ring in the showboat
atlantic city needs a brothel to be legal for more tourists
I live in AC and you are correct about the politics. AC has a HUGE budget that all goes to pet projects and friends of friends. It will never again be family friendly as Mayor Marty Small is dedicated to making it the weed capital of the East Coast. Research him, he's quite the character.
March isn’t really the best time to judge how well a NJ beach town is doing. If you went to Wildwood in March, the whole stretch would look abandoned. You should revisit in July, it’ll be a totally different experience.
They need to extend security from the boardwalks to Atlantic Ave so tourist can walk off boardwalks safely day and night.
Hi Ian, Check out the Nu Yawk channel. Too bad you didn't go into the Hard Rock - It's beautiful. Saw Ringo Starr there last year; many good acts play there. The Church across from the Knights of Columbus building is very beautiful inside, also - St. Nicholas of Tolentine. Best to you, Deb from NJ
That walkway was moving sidewalk thing that went to the Claridge and the Sands which was imploded.
Right! It was a people mover like you have at some airports. It was enclosed and you either went right or left at the end. To the right was the Sands and to the left was the Claridge.
ITS SAD ATLANTIC CITY HAS NOT CHANGED BORN AND RAISED IN AC LEFT THE CITY 30YEARS AGO I BLAME THE CORRUPTION AND POLITICANS
Hmm, you go to the beach in the winter and not many people are there.....interesting
who controls the media and hollywood?
