Detailed Forensic Upholstery Investigation On The 1932 Ford "DeLorean" Roadster

  • Our good friend Jim is a seasoned upholstery guru, and he is going to doing the interior and roadster top on the 32 DeLorean Roadster. Jim has been going interior work for 40+ years and knows 32 roadsters very well. Jim has done the interior on a lot of high end cars that have won Pebble Beach and Amelia Island, making him over qualified!! Jim and Matt work through the whole roadster top, picking out all of the neat custom touches that were done on the top back in the day. Without Jim's help we would have had a really hard time figuring this all out!!

Great investigative work and suggestions from two knowledgeable upholsters. Material, color, suppliers, brackets, assembly, fillers, windows, snaps, etc. Matt also good to have several photos, license plates, etc. Good thing you recovered as much material and parts when you got the car. All around, lots of valuable information documented.

It's obvious that Jim has done a fair number of these tops. You can see the gears turning, and the index cards flipping in his mind as he examines the details of what are now a few scraps of canvas, to visualize the original thought process of the builders.

It is with great pride and moreso a treasure that to me he's Uncle Jim. When I was a kid my mom, his sister, worked with him in his shop on Nevin St in Lancaster PA. And I remember going there to help detail the cars in the 24hr crunch to get them to Hershey. And the time my grandma grabbed the mic in the back of Wanamaker's limo and said "To the gas station James". I, in fact, still have the treadle machine Uncle Jim learned to sew on that was originally the grandmother's that he spoke of in the video.
I'm sorry to disappoint any of you, but his knowledge and his talent can't be duplicated. He has an amazing gift for details that would be next to impossible to teach even had they started learning 45yrs ago when I was still that kid on Nevin St. Not only that, but his ability to create and finesse are a gift f

A really interesting video, Jim definitely knows his stuff. I made my top for my previous '32 roadster that had a Duval screen with lots of help from my Mother (sadly no longer with us). Needless to say I chickened out second time around & let Sid Chavers do the hard work. It's covered with black Haartz cloth, been on the roadster for over five years and looks as good as it did on day one. Looking forward to seeing the DeLorean roadster get its new clothes in the Spring.

Fantastic video , Matt ! Jim is very knowledgeable & seemed to know what went where , & why . Hard to find people who still know these things anymore . To see this car finished out the way it used to look will be outstanding , to say the least . I'm sure you will start oiling the frame pivots & sourcing the missing bits & pieces . The front wood will be fine for use as a pattern , but leave end length for what he was describing over the corners of the windshield . That top will make the car stand out completely , as it sounds quite rare the way it is set up . Great stuff as always !

Custom or standard top bow, too bad the Chambersburg, Pa advertiser for years in OLD CARS News and Marketplace isn't any longer. I suspect his shop was on the corner of Lincoln Way West and South Federal Street always having high end restorations in progress.
"Cutting the damaged window away and sewing the new to the top ". Heagy Upholstery in York preformed a similar Halloween vandalism repair to my 4 month old '60 Metropolitan left quarter window..... rain tight but not looking factory.
Enjoyed Jim's salvaged Cadillac upholstery story, I wonder if the power seat assembly contained a (service) part we injected molded? It was a Delrin plastic seat glide containing 3 holes (a vertical mounting bolt hole, a threaded hole for the seat motor worm shaft through it's length, an angled hole for a limit switch plunger to stop the seat motor when fully at it's rear). Being a mold designer my boss asked me to stop in Newton Falls, Ohio to survey the mold's condition for future business, the molder was selling his press this mold fit. When I arrived they had the mold open on the bench, last shots of parts and clean quality reports, being an old part engineered on a drawing board no CAD print were available. Physically everything was proper, the parts matched the mold steel while all dimensions were in specification, if the steel is worn or damaged the parts will exhibit flash, divets or unwanted details. Big mistake, a pig coming in a poke I reported my findings to my boss by phone starting the mold transfer to our Penna plant.
After arriving our first sampling 2/3 of the dimensions were out of spec yet no part print. Our customer dug up a microfinch photo of the drawing board print, it had a mistake on the angled limit switch bore. If made to the print the bore would intersect the motor screw shaft voiding any seat track movement.
Keeping the part functional our customer gave us permanent deviations for their first power seat glides.

The old car smell is ingrained in the nose. They don't even notice anymore. I haven't done a restoration in over 30 years and just the mention of old cars triggers that smell.thanks for the memory

That top was definitely made by a skilled person. Too bad there was no tag on the header like Houser or Gaylord would put on their tops.

That would have been so rad to find a tag!
