Wow... thanks so much for this video. I totally cleaned my DC07. Found the problem was the filters. Rang Dyson for replacements. After waiting 50 mins, only to be told my vac was obsolete. No spare parts anymore, no servicing etc. but I could get 25% off a new machine, I declined this offer and went online, found the parts I needed. Only cost me $43. A couple of days later the parts arrived, I put my machine back together and now it works like a dream. I am so grateful for your help. Thank you thank you
Thank you solo much! I just took my vacuum to the repair shop. They said it would cost over $200 to fix and a 4 week wait. It was the 4 week wait that made me take it back home. I watched your video...washed my top filter, replaced my bottom filter, and checked the other areas you mentioned. It works perfectly now. I am going to call those repair folks and give them a piece of my mind and report them to the BBB for automatically telling me I needed a new clutch. Thank you!!!!
Watches 1 minute and 31 seconds to see the suction test. Did the same test to mine and had no suction. Saw that some gasket down by the motor head end was slightly popped off and put it back on, eureka! Thanks dude! I really like this vacuum and didn't want to get rid of it. Would've been a HUGE mistake for such a simple fix!
Great video thank you! Working on my old Dyson now. Just to say I think its very noble of a guy who looks like he makes a living from these jobs yet is willing to share his knowledge to allow us all to do it ourselves for free. (Well aware we all cant go to just his shop but you get my point lol)
Well done Alec! I wish all TH-cam demonstrators were as clear and concise as you are in their discourses on repairs and remedies. Compliments too to your cameraman. Excellent clarity!
Alec - Bloody brilliant! Not only are you showing how to fix the probem, you are also showing how to remove the filters etc etc. Thank you for this excellent video!
Thanks Alec! Had checked everything, fixed the broken drive belt, cleaned the filters etc. Watched your video and didn't know about that last 'pre-cyclone' bit. That's where it was blocked. Saved me a fortune. Now I can really say "my Dyson sucks"....
what a great guy, to decrease your own business, so we don't burn out our machines and have to throw them in the landfills. an angel. we need more of you.
You're a star. I started watching another video to change my filter, then this one popped up. I had exactly the ssme problem ... a bottle top. Thank you so very much for showing us this. The vacuum cleaner was destined for the tip! From a very chuffed 71 year old Grandma 👵😄
That was a great video! As I do monthly, I cleaned the filters & then there was no suction. As I lifted it to table, a gasket fell off on the floor. I couldn't figure out where it went. I realized, when you went through finding the blockage, it was the gasket where the cyclone fits into the suction. *A bit rectangular in shape, and on the left side, if you are looking at the front. I'm a widow, but very handy with tools, etc. You saved me hours of frustration. Thanks!! Great video!
Hi Alec Thanks a lot for your video. I have Dyson DC4 and I was not getting good suction when I using the attachment. The tube without the wand had perfect suction, after seeing your video, I checked the wand for blockage and cleared it. The suction using the wand is now normal. I am posting this comment for the benefit of others who may have similar problems with their Dyson DC4.
Thank you sir, actually went to the repair place this morning to drop off our dc14. After many years of service it wouldn’t pull. The shop was closed so decided to look at some TH-cam vids and fortunately found yours! Started pulling it apart, finally found an ink pen and bunch of debris lodged in the elbow at the bottom of the hose. Cleaned it out and it works great! Thanks for your time making the videos!
This video is such a huge help! I have been ready to get rid of my dyson for a while because it loses suction constantly and I thought it was too complicated for me to look at! I loved the way he broke it down into simple steps and lo and behold, I dont think my filters have ever been washed or replaced. I am washing the foam thing at the top now, but I was relieved to know that parts are relatively inexpensive and I feel so much better about it now. Thank you thank you thank you:-)
Thanks for taking the effort to help those of us that wanted to have a go but lacked the confidence to make a start Now that you've shown exactly what to do there was no longer any reason to hold back & our machine has a new lease of life
You have kept my old dyson running to the past several years! I just wish I could give you my business, but Australia is a bit of a shlep from the USA! Thank you so much!
Thanks Alex you have just saved us a repair bill, we have a DC33 and the blockage was exactly where the one in your video was. Great cheers mate from the UK.
Thank you! I didn't have any real blockages but just taking the pieces apart as you demonstrated and then putting them back together solved my problem. That makes this Dyson 8 years old and still good as new thank you!!!
My mate gave me his old dyson and said the filters just needed replacing. Replaced the filters and the thing still wasn't sucking. After watching your video I learned the damn thing was blocked with huge fragments of glass and french fries lol...it works now! Thanks
Thank you Alec. I'm picking up one of these for free because it is not sucking well for its owner, and she is giving it away. You have given me a simple checklist to see if I can resolve its problems - once fixed, I'm giving it to my brother.
Thank you!!! I was able to fix my vacuum myself :) My husband and I clean the filters on a regular basis, but we've never checked for blockages. Today when cleaning I noticed almost zero suction. Your video allowed me to find a major blockage (plastic train wheels from my 3 year old's toy......). Anyways thanks again for your helpful video!!!! We sure do love our Dyson!
Thanks a million! I was practically in tears thinking I broke my vacuum for good, but a few deep breaths and finding your video has saved me tears (and money.) Cheers! :)
Many thanks!! Following your advice I found a major blockage of hair and wood chips. You saved us a few hundred $$ on purchasing a replacement vac. Great video!
Thank you soooooo much for making this video. Our Dyson DC14 pet series, lost suction. We changed the clutch to no avail...We found your video...went through the steps and voile....we're in business. I'm lost without my Dyson...Sincerely, Teresa DeBruyn, Hemet California
Thank you! I had done all the troubleshooting described in my manual, and still couldn't figure out where the intermittent suction loss was coming from. What you show at 4:40 in your video is *exactly* what was wrong with my DC14. Thank you!
Way to go Alec! Saved me a lot of time and trouble! I was just about to order a replacement vacuum because of my frustrations with the problems I was having. Kudos to you and thanks again!
Thanks for the video. I have a DC animal and was about to go out and buy a new hoover. My loss of suction was caused by a clogged up filter. I washed the filter, dried it out and it's now working good as new.
I recently brought a 2nd hand dyson and it was working great for about 2 weeks then stopped, couldn't take it back and I cleaned all the filters but it was a blockage just like in the video :) cleaned it all out and flushed it through and it now cleans better and sounds a lot more healthy :) your video really helped :)
that was so nice of you to share that. My yellow Dyson is probably 10 or more years old. I did all the above. Only exception is sticking that rubber hose threw. Thank you I hope that solves the problem.
Thank you so much for this video. Our dyson which is a little newer then the one in the video stopped picking up. After checking all the parts as per your video I found the suction pipe (at the bottom of the machine) had come loose and pushed itself into the corner. After pulling it out and re fitting it the machine was cleaning with power once more. Thanks!
Fantastic so helpful .... I had no confidence taking off the circular filter fearing I might brake the side clips...many thanks to your guide it came off in seconds and the filter has been replaced.
thank you for making this, i had a insane blockage at the bottom of the hose, I had no idea how to open it. I tried Dyson support, you saved me a repair bill.
Worked like a charm! The same part that was clogged in this video was clogged on mine. I really appreciated the step-by-step instructions to check the Dyson. Brilliant!
Thank you! You helped me figure out how to fixed my vacuum. It was clogged on the side and by removing that small piece- which I had no idea how to do. It did the trick and I found a eureka of clog. Thank you
Thanks sooooooooo much!!! I was just about to spend a lot of money buying a new one when I found this! I followed your instructions and fixed it myself. Really grateful for your post. :)
Great Explanation and very helpful. My suction issue was due to a small detached hose on the bottom of the vacuum near the brush. This seems to come loose on frequent occasion even after being replaced....
Amazing!! Your video was so easy to follow. I was going to buy a new machine, but it looks like all I needed was to clean the filters. Another helpful tip would be showing how to remove the elbow -- mine was full of debri; I even found a pen in it! Thanks again, your video was very helpful! Mary
Your video was very helpful. Our DC14 has a tube on the underside near the brush, That was where a stick had lodged and created a jam of leaves and dog fur. Thanks!
Did you ever dream that your video would still be out there helping people almost 9 years later? Well, it is! Now I know how to at least take my machine apart to figure out which section is blocked. Oh, and thank you so much for not trying to scream over the sound of the vacuum. Very well done! Thank you!
Just did what you said and there was no blockage... yet I put the bloody thing back together and it works now so... mission accomplished I suppose? *confused*. Thanks man!
I bought mine eight years ago and have never done anything to it or had a problem with it. Oh yes, it once sucked up a piece of piping and I just took it apart and it was inside that first little elbow you opened. I love it. My only problem is that the wand doesn't reach high enough to pick up the cluster flies in my high windows and I can't find an extension to fit. Thanks for the tips though.
Outstanding, had mine in bits looked everywhere then watched this vid, poked a bit of stick in and out came my daughters little toy. Now works as new thanks :-)
Ok so without seeing your machine it is a bit difficult however there is a common problems often overlooked. The first this to do is look at the machine from the side once the handle is lowered into vacuum position (get someone else to hold it) and see if the base plate is actually sitting flat on the carpet. Over time the part that pivots can wear and get a bit stiff asisde from replacing it you can put a little bit of WD40 or RP7 in the joints so that it creates a seal on the carpet.
Alec, great video! Led me through my new (used) Dyson DC14. Unfortunately, I'm still losing suction once the roller brush hits the carpet. It has great suction when in standing position, but loses it once I start to vacuum. Hose works good. No rattling noise, but does have the high pitch whine. Thoughts?
Thank you so much!! Following your steps and having success is everything. You were very clear in your instructions and video. Troubleshooting is the most important step. Now I want to repair vacs. 😊
Just watched your video and the suction on the actual hoover is brilliant, I look after it and clean filters regularly. The problem is I have no.suction at the telescopic wand, why woukd this be, doesn't appear to be any blockages anywhere
I always throw marbles or round rock s if they come out the other end good to go,,,but I just found out what was wrong with my dyson DC 14. After 2days of checking everything,,man thank you JESUS
Thank you for this video. I have the DC18 Slim, and it turns out that I had a clog in the same place as the video. (The only thing is, the poor design of DC18 Slim makes it very difficult to clear that tube.) Vacuum working like a charm again. Thanks.
i did everything you showed us, -btw thanks it was really simple thanks to your step by step guide... but my suctions still not completely as it shud be, .. any ideas on why? everything was clear, the filters were pretty clean too, HELP! plzzzz
I have tried all the steps but could not find a blockage. It does not have any suction but works perfectly in the standing up position with the pipe. Please could you tell me what to do otherwise I would need to get a new machine.
You don't need a new machine. You do have a clog in the valve. When the vacuum is reclining in the rug cleaning mode, there is a valve that moves when to put the vacuum in the upright position the valve moves again and in your case it is not clogged in the upright manner, but it's clogged in the reclining mode. I can't see your vacuum, so I can't quite tell you how to disassemble it to get to that valve. But it's in the bottom of the vacuum where the bottom of the hose connects to it. I have the Dyson slim and I have seen the valve move if I tilt the big cleaner head up and down. With my vacuum you can take the bottom part of the hose off, but take the tube out first, then remove the bottom of the hose part.
Sorry, Alec, I've tried all your suggestions, and the tube extension has loads of suction, but it won't pick-up, from the carpets, when used upright? obviously I can't take the vacuum cleaner apart, so what else can I do??
Your videos are awesome. Thank you for taking the time to explain and show. I am servicing my vacuum and replacing the clutch because of your video. Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you for the help! I followed the steps and found the clog in the clear hose under the bottom. It was HUGE. I'll maintain my Dyson more often now. (Now that you tought me it had filters... I didn't know.) Where do you find the replacement hepa filters?
The hose converts to the floor automatically when the handle is lowered. There is 2 things to check if you do not have any suction at teh base. THe most likely problem is a smallish part called a U-bend that connects under the hose is missing. Or alternatively the part called an internal suction hose is missing. This is the part that joins the brush bar to the u bend. Have a look at a couple of videos and listen to me talking about these parts I would suspect one is simply missing.
I have an older Dyson DC07 Animal Vacuum cleaner and it has plenty of suction but after approximately 5 minutes of use the vacuum stops running (it's done this for several years). It will start up again after a 20 minute waiting period. I have taken the thing apart several times and I have called the Dyson help line and they have no idea why my vacuum isn't working correctly. It takes forever for me to vacuum my home. I've decided that I will not buy another Dyson. I own lots of oriental rugs with fringe and my Dyson doesn't handle the fringe very well. Any ideas?
My dc 14 is not clogged some one gave it to me and it was really dirty. So I cleaned it and now it works but lacks suction when vacuuming the floor but not in the hose. And the brush works . It didn't have that filter you showed under the canister could that be the problem?
I have a dc 14 brushes spin but on carpet it does not pick up anymore, when on carpet mode should you hear a power head kind of sound because mine is silent like on floor mode any help would be appreciated thanks
This may be the fastest explanation on all of the checkpoints of a DC14 I've ever seen... and it's 11 years old. Props bro from the United States!

This was the 5th video I came across & the only one that covered everything simply, good on yer mate! Top job

10+ years later, your advice solved it immediately. I had a hose clog up by the extended handle and didn't even notice. Love this evergreen video!
Alec - Bloody brilliant! Not only are you showing how to fix the probem, you are also showing how to remove the filters etc etc. Thank you for this excellent video!

Thanks for the video. I had a blockage in the tube on the side. I would have never found it without this video.
Your video was very helpful. Our DC14 has a tube on the underside near the brush, That was where a stick had lodged and created a jam of leaves and dog fur. Thanks!
thank you!! My dyson was losing suction and I didn't know why - I just checked all of the places you showed and yep - stuck in the u-bend!!

That really warms my heart. My favourite nephew is autistic so your comment is very special to me. I am just thrilled he likes the video
Thanks Alec - saved a trip to the Dyson shop! - Very easy to follow video - good job!
Thanks Alec, 11yrs later, i've just watched this and now sorted ours great video, advice!
Just did what you said and there was no blockage... yet I put the bloody thing back together and it works now so... mission accomplished I suppose? *confused*. Thanks man!
Thanks for the great instructions! You saved me a trip to the repairman (not to mention the cost). Much success to you and your business!

Awesome! Great Job Alec - straight to the point, crisp & clear
Cheers! Couldn't find the rubber ball I'd sucked up and then realised that I hadn't checked the pipes properly. LOL Thanks for making this vid Alec.
Outstanding, had mine in bits looked everywhere then watched this vid, poked a bit of stick in and out came my daughters little toy. Now works as new thanks :-)
Great video. Found out through inspection by bottom hose was lose underneath. But the video give you 8 to 10 checks. very helpful.
Ok so without seeing your machine it is a bit difficult however there is a common problems often overlooked.

Alec these videos are awesome. you have got me out of a few jams!!! keep the videos coming.
Thoughts?
Dana M Peters id love to know the answer
Me too!!!
Thank you so much!! Following your steps and having success is everything. You were very clear in your instructions and video. Troubleshooting is the most important step.
Now I want to repair vacs. 😊
Great tutorial! You helped me troubleshoot my issue, now my Dyson sucks again!
Thanks mate. That video did the trick. I was able to get my Dyson back in tip top shape thanks to you.
Alec - Thank you! This wasn't for my exact model of Dyson, but it helped me identify the trouble areas. Much appreciated!!
Just watched your video and the suction on the actual hoover is brilliant, I look after it and clean filters regularly. The problem is I have no.suction at the telescopic wand, why woukd this be, doesn't appear to be any blockages anywhere
That was bloody awesome! Found my blockage, thanks to your tutorial!!
going to try looking through the filters now, thank you. If this works you've saved me hundreds in buying a new hoover.
I always throw marbles or round rock s if they come out the other end good to go,,,but I just found out what was wrong with my dyson DC 14. After 2days of checking everything,,man thank you JESUS
You Sir, are an absolute hero. I had a big ball of fluff in the same spot. Cheers!
Thank you! That helped me with my DC15. I had never paid much attention to that exhaust filter, and it is badly clogged up.
Cheers Alec. You have saved me a few quid. Thanks mate from Glasgow.
Thanks. I am taking it to the garage right now before I forget the great advise.
Thank you for this video. I have the DC18 Slim, and it turns out that I had a clog in the same place as the video. (The only thing is, the poor design of DC18 Slim makes it very difficult to clear that tube.) Vacuum working like a charm again. Thanks.
Thank you, it was so easy to follow you along and fix my vacuum!!!
i did everything you showed us, -btw thanks it was really simple thanks to your step by step guide... but my suctions still not completely as it shud be, .. any ideas on why? everything was clear, the filters were pretty clean too, HELP! plzzzz

You just saved me $75! I review instant instant noodles and don't make a lot of money at it - thanks from The Ramen Rater!

This is the part that joins the brush bar to the u bend. Have a look at a couple of videos and listen to me talking about these parts I would suspect one is simply missing.
Thanks! This helped me solve the suction problem with my Dyson DC14.
Thanks Alec! You solved my problem!! Super helpful, so glad I checked out your video. Thanks for the kindness in posting it. ;-)
Thanks Alec! Top notch repair videos. You have a gift for teaching.
Dude that was awesome. This is exactly the kind of video I come to youtube for. TO LEARN! Cheers mate.
What a wonderful service (ha) you provide, posting these videos. Thank you so very much.
omg! now i finally found the problem on my vacuum😀THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Hi great video, I have one question. The HEPA filter is not washable correct?
You are asking about the "post motor" filter. Correct-----it is not washable.
Thank you! Well done and easy to understand. Didn't even know about the post motor filter.
Thank you! You saved me $200. Great video. :)
Any ideas?
Well... it is probably overheating. But if Dyson can't tell you why, I sure can't. Sure the exhaust filter is completely clean?
+Douglas Anderson No need to be mad at your dyson. Probably the stick or the Big ball is better and dosnt do that.
clean inside and change filters and clean bottom part where the brushes are, have you done what this video suggest?
sounds like a clog or stopped up filters
Yeah it’s probably that filter on the bottom that’s a pain to take off. If that doesn’t work maybe something is wrong with the motor.
Perfect! Our DC14 also had a lid stuck in the exact same place. 👌 Cheers!
My dc 14 is not clogged some one gave it to me and it was really dirty. So I cleaned it and now it works but lacks suction when vacuuming the floor but not in the hose. And the brush works . It didn't have that filter you showed under the canister could that be the problem?
I genuinely love to help others and knowledge is free :)
you saved our dc 14 thank you so much!!!
Thanks! Your video helped me to find my clog and pull it out!
Thank you!! Saving me some cash getting my vacuum back up and running!!
