Anyone notice Chidi, racked by doubt and indecision his whole life and afterlife, is the only one who doesn't pause, sit on the bench or require a final conversation - he just strides through happy and content with his decision
This scene is even more touching when you consider that a few episodes ago, Chidi was worried that Eleanor would eventually grow bored of him after spending an eternity with him. Instead, she spends this episode having trouble letting go of him, while he is content and confident about him leaving.
Chidi always said he could never walk through a door without knowing what is on the other side, then he walked through the Last Door without fear of the unknown.

I am reminded of Chidi's line when his memory was restored. Something about "I'll never be able to walk through a door without knowing what's on the other side. Even with eternity to try, I just don't think I can do it." I guess once he overcame that then he became whole.
Honestly as someone who has been terrified of death for a long time, the idea I might somehow feel complete and at peace with myself actually made me feel a lot better.

This was so painfully beautiful. You feel like Eleanor’s losing him but really, they had their eternity. They both deserve peace now. @@LIL1111100 I'm pretty sure you watched a different show. It was clearly stated that once you walk through the final door, you don't go somewhere else. You just cease to exist.
I've seen alot of people say they wished the show ended on the episode before this one, and that the show should've ended with everyone happy in the good place, that it was unnecessary to show the characters final deaths. But I completely disagree, this episode rounds off the show with such a healthy and positive message regarding death. If the show ended in the episode before, the final message of the show would've been, "Hope that heaven exists because that is the only way you can achieve happiness and death should be rejected and escaped from" However with this ending, the show teaches us about how death is a natural part of existence and it shows us why death is something that we all need to come to terms with in our own ways. It depicts loss and acceptance in one of the most beautiful ways I've ever seen in any show.
@@Alistocrat Except in the show "Death" isn't a natural part of existence. They where not "meant" to walk through that door. Left to their own devices after they are abandoned by higher power that's the best they could come up with to cope. In the end we see most of the main characters commit suicide so they won't get bored.
@@grfrog There is very little in The Good Place to suggest a 'higher power' was ever part of the design, the issue was that the system sucked and wasn't fit for purpose. The point of the show's ending was that humans aren't built to go on forever. To be able to tolerate eternity we'd have to be fundamentally altered in ways that would erase who we are as people and human beings (like what had already happened to the residents of the 'good' place when Team!Cockroach showed up there). The Good Place acknowledged something that many of us struggle or haven't come to terms with yet: Inherent in the nature of human existence is the fact that at some point we must stop existing. The Good Place presented a wonderful scenario where we got to do it on our own terms. I prefer their scenario to the religious idea of heaven tbh, which seems both torturous and irrational. Boredom is a fundamental aspect of being human, and incompatible with the concept of eternity. Also, suicide is a culturally loaded word that would require distress to be a trigger for your point to be valid. They didn't commit suicide, they made a choice, in a similar way that someone who decides to stop medical treatment for a condition might do. They surrendered to the inevitable, as we all must at some point. I hope you can see the difference.
I HAVE NEVER CRIED THIS MUCH BEFORE TO A TV SHOW. JUST THE MUSIC AND THE SCENERY AND HOW SHE WAKES UP AND ISNT SAD SHE JUST SMILES AT THE CALENDER. Keep in mind I’m a 22 year old male
Nintendo Switch Clips I mean, yeah. That’s why I said it. It’s medically proven that crying is good for you. Men (and sometimes even other genders) are taught not to cry or that it’s shameful but it’s healthy and natural.
There aren't many shows that end in such a strong way. The Good Place absolutely knocked it out of the park. And this scene was full of so much emotion that it comes absolutely crashing over you. *Superb* writing, direction, and acting.
I guess what’s really bittersweet about this is that while they’re gone, really and truly gone, I took the ending to mean that they have finally returned to the universe, their energy and essence and everything that comprised them has been broken down and returned in all of its parts to the energy that made them in the first place. All of them are one and the same with the universe so, in a way, Eleanor and Chidi really are chilling out in the dot of the i forever.
"I'm never going to be a person who can just walk through a door without knowing what's on the other side" - Chidi Anagonye I forking love the character development in this show
This finale was genius. In most stories, the finale would be the happily ever after from the previous episode, but this show knew better. It made you almost upset that the characters ended their story getting everything they wanted. You wanted them to stay around and be happy forever, but the whole point of the previous episode is to tell us that an eternity of happiness can grow dull and lifeless. These characters saved millions of souls, worked so hard and against all odds but still succeeded. A part of you wants them to remain in paradise, but another part knows that they deserve peace, they deserve to be let go. They deserve to finally rest. The people in charge could have easily racked out another season just for money, but they let the show go when there was nothing left for it, just like the characters. This finale was so bittersweet and felt so complete. Everyone involved deserves an Emmy
Primira interesting that you equates stepping through the gateway to no longer being in paradise. There is a book entitled conversations with God. One of the things that God says in the conversation is that when we leave this earthly plane and go to the next one, it isn’t the end. He says that at some point of our choosing we can decide to reabsorbed into his light and his energy and unify with him completely. So when I saw the ending my interpretation was that they had been in the place of bliss but their soul was completely healed and was ready to re-join God again. And as much as I will miss those characters could anything be more blissful than being one with a God.
SWilkes Comment My entire comment is saying how they deserve to finally be at rest after enjoying their life and after life to the fullest. I even mentioned how the point of the prior episode was to tell us that the good place is like a vacation and not meant be forever. I never once even tried equating the door as a bad option. I was just saying that as a viewer, you view a happy ending for the heroes as saving the day, getting all the material items and wishes they want, etc. etc. etc. you view it as the prior episode. So when you see the characters not wanted to exist anymore and to finally be at peace, it’s bittersweet since you have this presumption of a perfect ending and what’s best for the characters and situation flooding your head. The door is just another part of the good place. But instead of material happiness, you get spiritual peace.
you know its funny i predicteda happy ending if it ended on 12 it would of been when i saw elanor and chidi in the final shot i was like something's gonna seperate them aswell as the others and sure enough i was right i like to believe in a reboot or revival that they will meet again
my dog passed hours before I saw the series finale. I knew I would cry like a child but also, at the same time, I knew the series ending would comfort me somehow. I wasn't wrong. THANK YOU for all those years, learning on love and happiness, both you and my precious Meg.
Same emotion here. I feel a little better thinking that my dog and I are part of something bigger and like the waves someday we're all going back to the sea.
I'm so sorry.im still grieving after 6 months.theres just something reassuring to me that she was and still is a part of me.and she still is here just in a different form.like that wave
Everybody laughs at the people who dedicate their lives to philosophy or art, joke about them having to be baristas, this is why we need to invest in these things for our children. Chidi's speech took two minutes but it summed up thousands of years of people trying to make sense of life. Those two minutes had artists, and writers, and painters all working to express one beautiful idea. I have never had a banker or a brokerage firm give my soul what this two minutes gave me.
Absolutely, and not just arts, music, literature, beauty. Also science, math, computer literacy. Accurate history. It's not a coincidence that (all of our social issues notwithstanding - and they should never been overlooked) the post WWII America was at a peak because of GI Bill college. Americans need to be better educated - we should be the best educated in the world. It needs to be accessible to everyone, not just those can afford it. Education is good for America, and for Americans.
I agree, but I have to say, this speech is actually from the Buddhists (as Chidi made clear), so in fact the ones who deserve the recognition are the Buddhists and the Eastern philosophers, the show only showed the speech to us (which in itself is already awesome)
@@deeprpg1589 but you have show writers who are channeling the thousands of years of; performative art, acting, stage decorating, writing, western philosophers who basically set the whole premise of the show, lighting, sound design, etc... the idea was bhuddist but the idea is pointless without context. This conversation is the tip of a needle with all of human expression behind it.
It's interesting that Chidi was the only one not hesitating or sitting at the bench in front of the door whereas Eleanor, Jason and Tahani all having to sit down to ponder or having a realization that something must be done before they head into the door. Chidi said goodbye to Janet and went straight into the door without a second doubt. Such a character arc by the director and writer of the show, very well done. The Good Place has such a perfect ending that is most faithful to its show.
I know a lot of people didn't like this ending, but the entire series was about teaching us, the viewer, how to be a better person. The last episode was teaching us one last lesson: all things are finite. Treasure it all.
i was a wreck the entire time, but for some reason i completely broke down crying once jason said "yo chidi, wait up" and rushed through the door with a smile on his face.
i started crying as soon as jason won madden bc i knew that he was gonna be ready to go. he was always the simplest one with the simplest desires, and yet he still got to hear his father tell him “i’m proud of you, son,” which isn’t really all that simple at the end of the day. it wasn’t the video game, it was doing it with his dad...as soon as that happened i started crying and i never stopped until the finale was over. UGLY crying.
Micheal Schur has outdone himself. Can't wait for his next tour de force. Kristen's acting shines throughout this series, as she is a totally different character than in her previous work. Kudos to all the actors, even if Kristen can't remember Will's name and Ted can't remember D'Arcy's name (funny, that) (you had to have seen the live interview with seth meyers after the finale airing...).
What I've noticed about Kristen's acting over the years is that she just absolutely disappears into any role she plays and all I see is the character. Take arguable the three most famous roles of her career: Veronica Mars, Princess Anna, Eleanor Shellstrop. When I watch each of these forms of media, I don't see a person acting or any of their other characters. I see Veronica. I see Anna. I see Eleanor. I watch these characters as if Kristen Bell as an actress doesn't exist and each them are real people who live in some sort of alternative reality. I'm invested in their stories and who they are - their flaws, their goals, their weaknesses, everything. That's the sign of an excellent actor. Everyone seems to love Kristen for how sweet, funny, wholesome, relatable, and kind she is as a person. Believe me, I do too. I just want to express just how freaking amazing she is at her job.
I know right. Like when I watch Kristen in interviews I forgot that in real life shes all nice and down to earth completely opposite to Eleanor. And it’s also wierd to hear her voice coming from the sweet Anna in frozen
@@philly_sports1558 if I could kiss a comment, it would be yours bc as an aspiring actor myself, Kristen is a beautiful role model for this. Everything you just said is perfectly described to her multitalent as an actor and other roles she's done in the industry. It would be a true honour to meet her one day tbh.

My sweet wife passed earlier this year. We both LOVED this show. But the finale, before and after her passing were two very different experiences. It is extremely sad, but at the same time comforting and beautiful. The writing and acting of this show and the finale, was just a masterpiece!
Jason gained accomplishement. Tahani found a higher purpose in helping others. Chidi needed to have satisfaction. Eleanor went out of her way to right the wrongs. Michael finds a new adventure. Janet evolves into an incredible not a girl not a robot being who actually has a heart full of love for her friends.
Yknow, in a way jason and eleanor become what micheal believed they were in s1. When jason was waiting for janet he was quiet, at peace, and not so impulsive. And eleanor technically did save lives
I hope the creators of the good place understand how much this scene helps people who are either anxious about what happens after death or are grieving a loss. It's meant to give comfort to the characters, but it also gives comfort to the audience.
My wife loved this show and would rewatch it often. This quote stuck with her saying it was the most beautiful summary of life ever. When she passed I knew this was the quote I had to put on her prayer card.
damn you just had to bring up 11 regenerating, also i dare you to watch any episode of futurama with fry wanting to have one last conversation with his mom and not cry
I didn't cry at the ending. Not because I'm some heartless monster who wasn't moved by the show. I absolutely loved everything about it and this finale took me on such a emotional roller coaster. It was more of a feeling of catharis and relief than it was sadness. At the end, I just felt proud and happy for everyone in the show. Eleanor breaking down about her fear of being alone hit me really hard as well as this scene. But by the end of this emotional roller coaster, it truly warmed my heart that all of these people that we got to know over the years finally achieved inner peace and allowed themselves to end their existence in such a wonderful manner while at the same time inspiring the good in people of Earth. Eleanor and Chidi, in particular, had lived an eternity together in hundreds of different lives and had always loved one another and allowed each other to improve themselves every single time. After so much time of them being together, each of them deserved to go out peacefully and to leave a positive imprint on the rest of the universe. It's hard to believe that a single network comedy TV show can pack such of an intellectual and emotional punch. I loved everything about this show. The Good Place (2016-2020) Take it sleazy, motherforkers.
This show was not only great because it showed that characters can grow, it was great because the whole premise was "can human beings improve over time and get better," and those *were* the characters and they *did* improve. Eleanor began as a selfish person who really did not care about other people, and at the end she was warm and open and loving. It's astonishing that this was all so meta and that it worked. These were not just characters but metaphors for real people, for us as a species. Their growth as characters, their ability to change in a positive direction, was the answer to the philosophical problem that is very real every day of our lives. So, fiction, but not just fiction.

Her husband passed away nearly a decade earlier, most of her friends were gone. She told my mom about how she felt ready for what was next. It made me realize how beautiful of a thing it must be to look at the end not with fear, but acceptance.

I enjoy the fact that when chidi is told he can go through the door whenever he is ready he immediately said he was ready. That was the growth he needed. He was no longer indecisive in his mind he knew he was ready
I still tear up every time I see this. People that say this didn't need to happen in the series... it's GOING to happen, in ALL your series, and it's not a bad thing. That's the whole point.
When Arvo Pärt's "Spiegel im Spiegel" started playing I knew the scene was set out to be something special... As this show's legacy is. After the ending I was just left so thankful that I got to experience all of this.
This entire episode really made me cry. The writing for this show was beautiful. All of the characters had so much development and growth. We were able to enjoy so much laughter and comedy from the show, as well as a beautifully written plot and storyline. The deeper meaning behind it all is so beautiful beyond words. I just loved it.

The show is just so calming and ethereal. If there really is a good place, I hope it's like this. Enough time to do everything I couldn't do while alive, and an option to finally rest in peace when I'm truly ready.
Schur should make the soul squad a private unit in Brooklyn 99 and they all have the same personas and When jake peralta meets them he goes "man, idk what it is about this place, but i got a good feeling about it!" Or just make ANY show with the 6 of them again. I don't care. They did AMAZING.
@Ishan In the credits it says that Nick Offerman was playing himself, Nick Offerman. But since he and Ron are very similar in many ways, it was basically the same thing. :P
Nova If you wanna get analytical, I’ve heard that Nick Offerman makes mostly canoes and while Ron crafts pretty much anything he usually talks about/is shown making chairs so it’s a pretty strong case for Ron
Chidi finally learned to stop hesitating, and made the ultimate choice, with no regret. This show was such a beautiful journey. It's hilarious, touching, and deep all at once. There will never be another show quite like this. Chidi's words always stick with me, because they are true. We are all just waves, one day returning to the ocean we came from. I’m not sure if this was supposed to look like or be the Redwoods but as a person who isn’t religious, stepping into the Redwood is the most peaceful and spiritual experiences I’ve ever had. I'm selfish. I am. I wanted Chidi's and Eleanor's final for them to be on another Earth, as parents, raising kids the way they knew they should be raised--and maybe Janet comes into the picture as one of their kid's teachers, and it somehow wraps itself up neatly. I guess this works. I guess. I just don't know.
bigvirgotube you’re describing the fear of loss, something we all relate to. Be in their shoes for a moment though. Imagine an existence where loss doesn’t exist or where its meaningfulness has lessened so much where you can be happy and fulfilled just being. Only then can we be fulfilled by not being. It’s incredibly painful because it’s incredibly deep
While watching this I literally was on the couch with my wife and we hugged each other so tight and both promised each other we'd never force each other to stay ... this was one of the greatest finales to a series I have ever seen it fills you with so much hope and love especially in a time where we as humans hate and try so hard to force ideological perspectives on each other when the fact is we are all family all connected

This scene makes me feel like .. you know when you think a jalapeño popper is gonna be too hot, but you bite into it anyway and it's actually the perfect temperature? That feeling rules!
What a foreshadowing of a dialogue coming from Jake himself! It's something like that for me at the finale. I was expecting to feel sad, maybe even frustrated that it ended.... but instead I felt at ease with a tinge of bittersweet, like a "perfect temperature".

I agree with everyone that thinks it should end on the previous episode
@@aemiliacarolphonetube9749 Why?
Yes, the final episode is absolutely perfect.
Keep in mind I’m a 22 year old male
same but i'm a 14 year old male. i literally never have cried this much.
Crying is good for you
you are probably right.
Nintendo Switch Clips I mean, yeah. That’s why I said it. It’s medically proven that crying is good for you. Men (and sometimes even other genders) are taught not to cry or that it’s shameful but it’s healthy and natural.
I hope the second comment didn’t come off ruder than intended btw 😅
That's what I thought too! Glad to see I'm not the only one.
This broke me. The-ahhd the dot over the i.

This is probably the most beautiful/bittersweet show i've ever watched.
SWilkes Comment That is literally what the original comment was saying. You just repeated it but instead threw God in it.
you know its funny i predicteda happy ending if it ended on 12 it would of been when i saw elanor and chidi in the final shot i was like something's gonna seperate them aswell as the others and sure enough i was right i like to believe in a reboot or revival that they will meet again
This comment helps me understand my own thoughts about it. Thank you!
my dog passed hours before I saw the series finale. I knew I would cry like a child but also, at the same time, I knew the series ending would comfort me somehow. I wasn't wrong. THANK YOU for all those years, learning on love and happiness, both you and my precious Meg.
I put one of mine down a day before watching the finale. I feel your pain and wish you the best.
If only I could frame this comment and hang it on my wall... You are very right Eric Williams, and The Good Place really is amazing. Take it sleazy.

I was straight up crying from watching this scene again and your comment made me laugh, you've made my day tbh.
i went to the beach recently and just sat and watched the waves crashing on the shore, playing this scene in my mind over and over
It's interesting that Chidi was the only one not hesitating or sitting at the bench in front of the door whereas Eleanor, Jason and Tahani all having to sit down to ponder or having a realization that something must be done before they head into the door.
Who didn't like the ending?!
Yeah who didn't like the ending!!??
Nandita Menon a lot of people saw the door as a metaphor that glorified suicide which is completely incorrect in my opinion

i was a wreck the entire time, but for some reason i completely broke down crying once jason said "yo chidi, wait up" and rushed through the door with a smile on his face.
Same! And then once I started to recover from that, I get hit with "say goodbye to me now, and leave before I wake up"
Otherwise known as the episode where I sobbed for 45 minutes straight - what a genius, beautiful ending to a genius, beautiful show.
i started crying as soon as jason won madden bc i knew that he was gonna be ready to go. he was always the simplest one with the simplest desires, and yet he still got to hear his father tell him “i’m proud of you, son,” which isn’t really all that simple at the end of the day. it wasn’t the video game, it was doing it with his dad...as soon as that happened i started crying and i never stopped until the finale was over. UGLY crying.
Even Mindy St.Clair would cry at this.

The kind of character arc that makes you think they came up with the ending first and worked their way back. Incredible writing.
@@Mopark25 you know what? that's exactly it feels like. It was just that perfect.
Just wanted to point out they didn't really forget their names lol. Kristen was joking and Ted was just trying to prepare what to say.
I honestly cannot imagine that he will manage to top this series and the characters and ideas he got to express over the past 4 years.

Omg same!
The Good Place (2016-2020)
Take it sleazy, motherforkers.
Chidi shed his ego and became one with the universe, he did not go anywhere , he was everywhere.
