I have been listening to music for over 50 years. There have been bands i liked! bands i absolutely loved, bands I thought some of the best I ever heard. Nothing compares to Nightwish so far.
Tarja Turunen was the original singer and 100% operatic. Anette Olzon was number two and she had mostly a pop/jazz style. Floor Jansen, who you saw here, can sing any style you want, from opera to death growls and everything in between.
well i agree with you around 90% , but the jazzy part of Anette is, well, not very broad. She is mainly pop, in my opinion, for whatever that is worth lol
Hi. You asked a good question. Yes, you will instantly notice differences between the eras covered by the 3 singers, as you move forward chronologically in the band's repertoire. It is a natural evolution corresponding to the artistic maturation of the band (the themes addressed, etc.) but also an evolution of the vocal element, taking into account the vocal abilities of each of the 3 singers and the fact that Tuomas Holopainen composed specifically for the voice of the current singer in the band. As a collateral consequence, the new singers had to perform songs from the repertoire prior to their joining the band, putting their vocal, creative and adaptation abilities to the test. The first singer, Tarja Turunen (from Finland) recorded the first 5 albums in the studio with the band, establishing herself with her mostly classical interpretation, which led to that dark gothic element that you mentioned in your first reaction. The predominant theme addressed is the universe of personal feelings, often seen through the prism of mythological themes. The 2nd singer was Anette Olzon (from Sweden) she recorded with the band the following 2 albums (6th and 7th). Her voice is much brighter, and her style is predominantly pop-rock - also, the subject matter has evolved in accordance with the emotional turmoil that the band went through at the time, plus an emphasis on the innocence of childhood. It is worth mentioning in this 2nd era of the band the development of the Celtic folk vein, supported by bringing the British multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley into the band. The last 2 albums (8th and 9th), as well as the one that will be released this year (the 10th) were recorded with the 3rd and current singer, Floor Jansen (from the Netherlands). She has formal contemporary training (Rock Academy in Tilburg) as well as classical training (she studied 1 year of opera and 1 year of musical theater at the Tilburg Conservatory) and has performed in symphonic metal bands since she was 16 (After Forever, then ReVamp). In Nightwish, Floor Jansen proved a great vocal versatility, mixing all these styles in her performance. For Floor, both songs were "covers", which she learned "on the fly" in 48 hours, perfecting them at rehearsals and soundchecks during the 10 months she joined the band as a temporary replacement, i.e. the 2nd half of the 2012 - 2013 world tour promoting the album "Imaginaerum". Greetings from Finland! You are absolutely right. Floor is huge bless to Nightwish and not only because of her singing skills, but also because for her fantastic personality. On the other hand the Nightwish was salvation to Floor and real opportunity to shine and really show her talent. The creativity of Tuomas will push Floor's abilities to the limit and it's every time very satisfying. Floor + Nightwish is like a great rally or F1 team. You can build a great car, but it's just nothing without top class driver. Or you can be a great driver, but you can't never be a champion without right team. And the Floor with Nightwish is the real winning team!
From The Warning Narcisista to Nightwish Story Time 👍 For me personally, only Floor at Nightwish, Tarja was too operatic and Anette was too poppy for me, but that's absolutely a matter of taste and anyone who sees it differently is absolutely OK. This is our Valkyrie Goddess for you. And you witnessed first hand a "Dutch Windmill" , and to finish you off, The Operatic "Cruise Missile" !!!! Floor has 3 distinct styles. Head banging(straight forward, then back), hair whip(almost like cracking a bull whip) and the Windmill(continuous 360 degree revolutions). Why Windmill? Well she is Dutch. Awesome tune , although it is kind of a popish sound (originally sung by Anette, the second singer of Nightwish), but Floor gave it soooo much POWER !!! Including this "Operatic" part, what was originally done by children's choir because vocal limitations on their second singer (Great singer also, I might add), but Floor has none of that "Limit". Nightwish lyrics are often a bit interpretive, and not as "straight forward" as many other bands, because Tuomas ( The Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen: founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish.) prefers people to put their own interpretations and life experiences into the lyrics. you connect with songs on a personal level when there is something there that relates to things you have gone/are going through, and you may even find new connections later on in life when you have gone through other big events/emotions. there might be songs you are quite indifferent about (oh, nice song) and then you go through something big and all of a sudden it makes you break down in tears because now you relate to something in the lyrics you didn't before, and see it from a whole new perspective. imagination and life experiences are powerful, and Tuomas has great appreciation of this. So, there is a saying: Tarja Turunen (First singer): Operatic style. Anette Olzon (Second singer): Pop/Rock/Jazz Style. It is worth noting that all the (17?) songs in this Headliner concert were written for the other 2 singers. In 10 months of touring this show as a fill-in singer with the band, she made them her own.
I have loved Sarah Brightman for years. She is how I got into Opera in the first place. And then along comes Nightwish. My husband who passed away on November 22, 2022, introduced me to Nightwish and I absolutely fell into the "Rabbit hole". Thank you for a very groovy reaction...❤
Hello I have some info on Floor Jansen for you here. She is married to Hannes Van Dahl, drummer of the Swedish power metal band Sabaton. Together they have 2 daughters (Freja & Lucy) Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 3 octaves (C3 to F6). Re-singing style ranges from opera to screams and grunts. She usually sings in English, in addition she has also sung songs in Dutch, German, Spanish, Finnish, Latin, Italian and Swedish. Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she cool singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016. From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour. On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. A note that she was officially made lead singer in July of 2013 (same time Troy was made a permanent member) but the band chose to keep it secret until the end of the touring season, nearer to Christmas. The earlier October announcement was prompted by the realization that they couldn’t list them as touring musicians on the soon to be released Showtime, Storytime recording of the Wacken concert.
Like The Warning has been going thru evolution, Nightwish is , after 28 years, still evolving. All 3 female lead singers have been exactly what the band needed at the time. Tarja, an original founding member, with a more operatic voice, set the tone for the band in the first 9 years. The second singer, Anette, was more poppy/blues/jazzy, and was with the band for 7 years. Anette left mid world tour and Tuomas contacted Floor to ask if she could substitute to help them get thru the tour. Floor had to learn 18 songs from the setlist, and only had 48 hours to do it. A lot of the songs in the Wacken 2013 concert were written for Tarja and Anette. None written for Floors voice. Didn't matter, cause she nailed them all. She was offered the lead spot and accepted. That was12 years ago. They have a new album dropping this year and I expect it will be different. Tuomas, keyboardist and founding member of the band, writes over 95% of their music and is called The Metal Mozart. Lots to hear and see from this band. Like The Warning, Nightwish is best served LIVE. Buckle up. It's a hell of a ride.

2nd lead singer Anette Olzon era song. From the 2011 Imaginaerum album, which had themes of imagination and fantasy. Song #6 of 15 here. The operatic part , in studio, was done solely with the choir. That type of vocal isn't Anette's forte. Floor can do them , so she did. Tuomas (keys/ primary songwriter) likes themes of stories and childhood innocence, and he is a fan of Disney and composer Hans Zimmer. Since you mentioned Sarah Brightman, the original Christine , you should know that Nightwish has covered the song Phantom of the Opera, with original lead singer Tarja Turunen live at the Helsinki 2005 concert (End of an Era DVD). And with Floor at Ziggo Dome in Amstedam, The Netherlands 2022. Tarja sang with bassist Marko Hietala (seen here). Floor sang with Dutch Phantom Henk Poort.
I think that Helsinki (Hartwell) 2005 is the better of the two. I don’t often pick against Floor but Marco and Tarja were magical in that performance. Possibly heightened by the fact the “open letter” followed immediately after the concert…..

Floor is a storyteller (and wait till you see Marko (bass player) in action alone or with Floor) She made any song written by Tuomas with either Tarja or Annette voice in his though, her own. I am a huge Floor fan, but all 3 singers are amazing in their own way.

1st one was very operatic. Tarja was/is amazing. 2nd one was more traditional rock/pop sound. Annette was wonderful on record. Floor Jansen the 3rd and current vocalist does it all and more. They are all wonderful in their own style. Unfortunately as you know. It is very difficult to move on when a band changes a beloved vocalist. You have so much to experience with this incredible band. they are a dish best served live. Hope to see you again very soon my friend. Nice question - as the others have already pointet out, it's a evolutionary consequence that Floor will be the last Nightwish lead singer - there are nothing in the galaxy that are able to match a storyteller like her.
You’ll definitely notice a difference between the vocalists…1:Tarja,Purely operatic style..she’s good at it but definitely a one trick pony. 2:Annette,poppy rock…ok in the studio,not great live. 3:Floor,can do anything that’s needed,from operatic to growls and all points in between. To be honest You’ll get far more views reacting to Floor than either of the other two precisely because she’s so good live.

So, some songs are interesting to compare because they have their differences and qualities from the time they were recorded, an example of this is Ever dream, while others were immortalized due to their unique performance, for example The Phantom of the opera with the first vocalist, you can watch it without fear

You will notice a difference mostly with the singers. Tuomas (Keys), whom we call Metal Mozart, writes 95% of all music & and lyrics, so it is consistent throughout the decades; though he goes where his whims & muses take him so every song is different. The singers vary in that Tarja (pr. Tarya) was fully operatic - check their live versions of Phantom of the Opera or Nemo. Annette, was very much more a pop sound and while great on many tracks in recordings (check music video Amaranth or one of her better Live performances, Slow Love Slow at the Montreal Jazz festival); struggled with all the prior, operatic type songs as well as consistency in Live singing, so they had to rely on some playback backing vocals, layering, etc. for her. Floor Jansen (our Valkyrie Goddess of Metal) is another story. She can do it all, from Growls to high Operatic. Perfect fit for the final chapter of this band as Tuomas has said after Floor, they will not get another singer. He can write pretty much anything for her and really challenged her on their last album. They posted a compilation of a few performances of their song Tribal from the world tour they finished this last summer. It is awesome!
IMO Floor is by far the best of the three. Stick to the live recordings , like you said, the show is a big part of the song. Check out the lyrics also, they're quite unique.
I'm going to suggest that you actually do Annette and Slow Love Slow from Monterey Jazz next. It will reset your opinion of the band in a good way that will allow you to see the musical journey in a different light.

Early fans tend to stick with Tarja who appears on the first five albums although some have moved on to Floor but ignore Anette unless they only listen to studio performances. Anette is okay in the studio recording of two albums although this is one of her songs and the operatic middle section required session singers even then. Also some of her studio recordings aren't as good as Floor live. A prime example is The Poet and the Pendulum. So Anette studio only. Tarja studio or live but don't expect much vocal versatility. As many will say, Tuomas wrote for Tarja's voice, for Anette/Marko's voices and now writes whatever he fancies as he knows Floor can sing it. By the way the first reaction song, Ghost Love Score was a Tarja song but Floor gave it the grit and the belted ending.
yes you're correct each of the singers had their own style Tarja the first one (1996-2005) was more operatic Annette the second (2006-2012) was more pop and now Floor well she does it all which you'll find out LOL and they cover all bases rock, metal,, ballad, folk and you'll love them all and each one you listen too becomes your new best favorite. lol enjoy your journey

My honest opinion about the singers……. Floor is all around the best of the 3 - the most versatile and dynamic. Tarja was the original and a fantastic front woman in her own right, just a lot more anchored to primarily operatic vocals. Her and Floor are friends and have done at least one song together. I first heard Nightwish in 2012, on Octane on Sirius. I believe it was Storytime, with Annette as the singer. Watched the video and decided it wasn’t my thing, just not anything special, especially the vocals. Hence why I never listed to them again until the pandemic, when Ghost Love Score with Floor popped up as a suggestion after watching The Hu Wolf Totem, I believe. For me, Floor is absolutely the best, Tarja has her special place with some priceless performances (Phantom of the Opera, Sleeping Sun). Annette is just not my thing, too poppy and a poor stage presence in comparison to Tarja and Floor.

For me personally, only Floor at Nightwish, Tarja was too operatic and Anette was too poppy for me, but that's absolutely a matter of taste and anyone who sees it differently is absolutely OK.

This is our Valkyrie Goddess for you. And you witnessed first hand a "Dutch Windmill" , and to finish you off, The Operatic "Cruise Missile" !!!!
Floor has 3 distinct styles. Head banging(straight forward, then back), hair whip(almost like cracking a bull whip) and the Windmill(continuous 360 degree revolutions). Why Windmill? Well she is Dutch.
Awesome tune , although it is kind of a popish sound (originally sung by Anette, the second singer of Nightwish), but Floor gave it soooo much POWER !!! Including this "Operatic" part, what was originally done by children's choir because vocal limitations on their second singer (Great singer also, I might add), but Floor has none of that "Limit".
Nightwish lyrics are often a bit interpretive, and not as "straight forward" as many other bands, because Tuomas ( The Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen: founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish.) prefers people to put their own interpretations and life experiences into the lyrics. you connect with songs on a personal level when there is something there that relates to things you have gone/are going through, and you may even find new connections later on in life when you have gone through other big events/emotions. there might be songs you are quite indifferent about (oh, nice song) and then you go through something big and all of a sudden it makes you break down in tears because now you relate to something in the lyrics you didn't before, and see it from a whole new perspective. imagination and life experiences are powerful, and Tuomas has great appreciation of this.

Tarja Turunen (First singer): Operatic style.
Anette Olzon (Second singer): Pop/Rock/Jazz Style.
Floor Jansen (Current, and acording to Tuomas "Metal Mozart", the last singer): All Styles.

In 10 months of touring this show as a fill-in singer with the band, she made them her own.
I have loved Sarah Brightman for years. She is how I got into Opera in the first place. And then along comes Nightwish. My husband who passed away on November 22, 2022, introduced me to Nightwish and I absolutely fell into the "Rabbit hole". Thank you for a very groovy reaction...❤

I have some info on Floor Jansen for you here.
She is married to Hannes Van Dahl, drummer of the Swedish power metal band Sabaton. Together they have 2 daughters (Freja & Lucy)
Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 3 octaves (C3 to F6). Re-singing style ranges from opera to screams and grunts. She usually sings in English, in addition she has also sung songs in Dutch, German, Spanish, Finnish, Latin, Italian and Swedish.
Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she cool singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour. On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.

A note that she was officially made lead singer in July of 2013 (same time Troy was made a permanent member) but the band chose to keep it secret until the end of the touring season, nearer to Christmas. The earlier October announcement was prompted by the realization that they couldn’t list them as touring musicians on the soon to be released Showtime, Storytime recording of the Wacken concert.

If you continue with your journey you will discover that every song is different from the others and each one an adventure.
Like The Warning has been going thru evolution, Nightwish is , after 28 years, still evolving. All 3 female lead singers have been exactly what the band needed at the time. Tarja, an original founding member, with a more operatic voice, set the tone for the band in the first 9 years. The second singer, Anette, was more poppy/blues/jazzy, and was with the band for 7 years. Anette left mid world tour and Tuomas contacted Floor to ask if she could substitute to help them get thru the tour. Floor had to learn 18 songs from the setlist, and only had 48 hours to do it. A lot of the songs in the Wacken 2013 concert were written for Tarja and Anette. None written for Floors voice. Didn't matter, cause she nailed them all. She was offered the lead spot and accepted. That was12 years ago. They have a new album dropping this year and I expect it will be different. Tuomas, keyboardist and founding member of the band, writes over 95% of their music and is called The Metal Mozart. Lots to hear and see from this band. Like The Warning, Nightwish is best served LIVE. Buckle up. It's a hell of a ride.

2nd lead singer Anette Olzon era song. From the 2011 Imaginaerum album, which had themes of imagination and fantasy. Song #6 of 15 here. The operatic part , in studio, was done solely with the choir. That type of vocal isn't Anette's forte. Floor can do them , so she did. Tuomas (keys/ primary songwriter) likes themes of stories and childhood innocence, and he is a fan of Disney and composer Hans Zimmer.
Since you mentioned Sarah Brightman, the original Christine , you should know that Nightwish has covered the song Phantom of the Opera, with original lead singer Tarja Turunen live at the Helsinki 2005 concert (End of an Era DVD). And with Floor at Ziggo Dome in Amstedam, The Netherlands 2022. Tarja sang with bassist Marko Hietala (seen here). Floor sang with Dutch Phantom Henk Poort.
I think that Helsinki (Hartwell) 2005 is the better of the two. I don’t often pick against Floor but Marco and Tarja were magical in that performance. Possibly heightened by the fact the “open letter” followed immediately after the concert…..
I suspect there are many who serve double duty in the Nightwish Army and The Warning Army.. this was Nightwish at WACKEN 2013.. so excited for The Warning this year performing at WACKEN on my birthday Aug. 1st

Floor is a storyteller (and wait till you see Marko (bass player) in action alone or with Floor) She made any song written by Tuomas with either Tarja or Annette voice in his though, her own. I am a huge Floor fan, but all 3 singers are amazing in their own way.

1st one was very operatic. Tarja was/is amazing. 2nd one was more traditional rock/pop sound. Annette was wonderful on record. Floor Jansen the 3rd and current vocalist does it all and more. They are all wonderful in their own style. Unfortunately as you know. It is very difficult to move on when a band changes a beloved vocalist.
You have so much to experience with this incredible band. they are a dish best served live. Hope to see you again very soon my friend. If you love beautiful melodies, amazing vocals, and world class compositions inspired by movie soundtracks to Metallica you will not be disappointed.

Nice question - as the others have already pointet out, it's a evolutionary consequence that Floor will be the last Nightwish lead singer - there are nothing in the galaxy that are able to match a storyteller like her.
You’ll definitely notice a difference between the vocalists…1:Tarja,Purely operatic style..she’s good at it but definitely a one trick pony. 2:Annette,poppy rock…ok in the studio,not great live. 3:Floor,can do anything that’s needed,from operatic to growls and all points in between. To be honest You’ll get far more views reacting to Floor than either of the other two precisely because she’s so good live.

So, some songs are interesting to compare because they have their differences and qualities from the time they were recorded, an example of this is Ever dream, while others were immortalized due to their unique performance, for example The Phantom of the opera with the first vocalist, you can watch it without fear

It should be pointed out that Marco’s base is a Warwick Buzzard (look at the shape) - designed by John Entwistle of The Who.
You will notice a difference mostly with the singers. Tuomas (Keys), whom we call Metal Mozart, writes 95% of all music & and lyrics, so it is consistent throughout the decades; though he goes where his whims & muses take him so every song is different.
The singers vary in that Tarja (pr. Tarya) was fully operatic - check their live versions of Phantom of the Opera or Nemo.
Annette, was very much more a pop sound and while great on many tracks in recordings (check music video Amaranth or one of her better Live performances, Slow Love Slow at the Montreal Jazz festival); struggled with all the prior, operatic type songs as well as consistency in Live singing, so they had to rely on some playback backing vocals, layering, etc. for her.
Floor Jansen (our Valkyrie Goddess of Metal) is another story.
She can do it all, from Growls to high Operatic. Perfect fit for the final chapter of this band as Tuomas has said after Floor, they will not get another singer.
He can write pretty much anything for her and really challenged her on their last album.
They posted a compilation of a few performances of their song Tribal from the world tour they finished this last summer. It is awesome!
IMO Floor is by far the best of the three. Stick to the live recordings , like you said, the show is a big part of the song. Check out the lyrics also, they're quite unique.
I'm going to suggest that you actually do Annette and Slow Love Slow from Monterey Jazz next. It will reset your opinion of the band in a good way that will allow you to see the musical journey in a different light.

Early fans tend to stick with Tarja who appears on the first five albums although some have moved on to Floor but ignore Anette unless they only listen to studio performances. Anette is okay in the studio recording of two albums although this is one of her songs and the operatic middle section required session singers even then. Also some of her studio recordings aren't as good as Floor live. A prime example is The Poet and the Pendulum. So Anette studio only. Tarja studio or live but don't expect much vocal versatility. As many will say, Tuomas wrote for Tarja's voice, for Anette/Marko's voices and now writes whatever he fancies as he knows Floor can sing it. By the way the first reaction song, Ghost Love Score was a Tarja song but Floor gave it the grit and the belted ending.

You should also check other bands where Floor sang (After Forever, ReVamp), she cooperated also with Ayeron and Epica. Her solo stuff is amazing too.

First singer opera only, second singer pop/rock only, Floor can do it all.
My honest opinion about the singers……. Floor is all around the best of the 3 - the most versatile and dynamic. Tarja was the original and a fantastic front woman in her own right, just a lot more anchored to primarily operatic vocals. Her and Floor are friends and have done at least one song together. I first heard Nightwish in 2012, on Octane on Sirius. I believe it was Storytime, with Annette as the singer. Watched the video and decided it wasn’t my thing, just not anything special, especially the vocals. Hence why I never listed to them again until the pandemic, when Ghost Love Score with Floor popped up as a suggestion after watching The Hu Wolf Totem, I believe.
For me, Floor is absolutely the best, Tarja has her special place with some priceless performances (Phantom of the Opera, Sleeping Sun). Annette is just not my thing, too poppy and a poor stage presence in comparison to Tarja and Floor.
Tarja is purely operatic. I can’t see her being your thing.
