Hello Dr. Dan [ @DrDanRobinson ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. In August 2013, a Pirate on drums, a Hobbit on guitar, a Viking on bass, a Wizard on keyboards and a Valkyrie Queen on the microphone took the Wacken Open Air metal festival stage. And by magic all the stars aligned that night, with a monumental concert as a result.
The distortion in her voice was absolutely on purpose. Every note she sings is a deliberate choice, even when she’s improvising, although there’s not much space to improvise on with Nightwish. Having said that, the whole last section of ‘Ghost Love Score’ began taking shape when Floor started improvising at the end of it, because she always felt it was lacking something. In the original recording of the song, when Floor wasn’t part of the band yet, the ending was almost completely instrumental, bar the recorded orchestra in the background. Floor gave this epic song the epic ending it deserved. ❤
@jeannettesimpson9778 Not a metal sounding song. Beautiful piano and orchestra arrangement with wonderful cinematography and Floor's vocals, both her rich lower tones and upper register. Vocals recorded in her home studio with all the other songs from the new album, 6 weeks after having her second baby Lucy.
Originally Floor was sent by Allfather Odhinn to Midgard to gather the souls of fallen warriors to Valhalla, but she got distracted and joined a series of bands. However, Floor still gathers souls by her grace, beauty and the sheer power of her vocals. We give thanks for her at our Blots regularly and hope that Odhinn won't notice that she has never returned to Asgard. ALL HAIL THE VALKYRIE GODDESS!!! The Nightwish Army is incoming! Love that you want live performances, you’re in luck! This entire show is on TH-cam and you literally CAN NOT go wrong with any of the songs from this show. She was absolutely locked in for the entire hour and a half they performed, pick any of their songs from this set, just search Nightwish Wacken 2013 and pick a song, the whole show was perfect
When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’. Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’. Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’ Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on TH-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered TH-cam in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish. Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turned 7 years this march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.
If you want to check out some non-metal songs by Floor, she was on a Dutch tv-show called "Beste Zangers" (Best Singers) and those performances are certainly worth watching (especially her version of Shallow). Also, the songs she did on her personal TH-cam channel are great. And of course, like everyone else already commented, more Nightwish would be great as well :)
If you want to see Floor doing Floor things live... check out Shoemaker live from Hellfest. The song itself is a rock/metal song with your typical vocals, the chorus is softer with background singers coming in (Troy and I believe Marco too), but it's after the bridge, when we get into the 3rd act of the song where Floor does an operatic aria in Latin that is so beautiful it brings tears to your eyes. The whole song is great... it's a tribute to planetary geologist Eugene Shoemaker, currently the only person buried on another celestial body (the moon). Floor has stated this is one of the hardest songs she's had to sing... one of the toughest to get recorded properly, but when you watch her live, it appears effortless. I often imagine, after Floor joined and Tuomas heard her sing all the old Tarja songs with ease, even improving many, he went okay... grabbed his pencil and penned a song near impossible to sing... handed it to Floor, she looks it over, and says... okay, no problem! Frustrated, Tuomas grabs his pencil again, and pens Shoemaker, handing it to Floor going... oh yeah... we'll let's hear you sing this! To which Floor replied, Okay... no problem... :)
I've already seen Floor live after a vacation and I've already seen Floor live at the end of her strength and heavily pregnant. What distinguishes Floor is that the quality of her voice and her performance always remains at the highest level. There are certainly thousands of great singers in the world who celebrate deserved success in their genre ... but then Floor comes along and inspires in every genre she wants to serve. Floor is probably the most versatile singer in the whole world at the moment.
First of all, thank you for recognizing the band as a whole. They are such talented musicians and together they form a united sound that is truly great. Nightwish has been blessed with great female singers. Tarja, Annette and Floor are all wonderful, in their own ways and each one deserves a listen. Don't forget that Nightwish, through the tenure of all three singers has also been graced with the presence of a superb male vocalist in Marko, who is also the bassist. I'm sure you will be getting many suggestions for all of the singers, and, for my suggestion, I'm going to go with their tribute to Pink Floyd's "High Hopes" from the 2005 End of an Era DVD, which does feature Marko and some really great guitar work by Emppu.
Just an big Thx to you Gentleman, showing People that normally changes the Sidewalk, when we Metalheads aproach, that our Taste in Music can also be non threatening but enhancing:). Great Analysis, learned something new about our Valkyria! STay healthy! MH, Frankonia, Bavaria, Germany.
You definitely should watch the video Floor made reacting to herself singing this at Wacken where she explains how she felt and which choices she made singing it making it her own in comparison to the original version. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish only 10 months prior to this performance. This and so many presents more she left on her TH-cam channel.
Floor Jansen is this living instrument on the stage, telling the story of a song with her voice, posture, movements and expressions. She has been for many years at the point that she doesn't have to think about technique, when to sing head, chest or mixed voice and how to switch from one to the other. So I heard her say in an interview lately. It has all become natural to her. Yet Tuomas is challenging her to expand her skills, again for the new album Yesterwynde. You might want to check it out. Nightwish is not going to play live for some time. Maybe in 2027 or later on. They took a break from touring but will be making new music. Thank you for your reaction! Really enjoyed it ❤ Greetings from Westland, The Netherlands

Hello Mr. Dan. If you want to be surprised by the versatility of Floor Jansen's voice, the control and range she has, you have to see 3 live: "Your is an empty hope" (where she growls heavily), "Romanticide" (where she reaches really high notes) and "Poet and the Pendulum" (very long, complex song with many changes of style).
This isnt really a flashy band they are all business, everyone is a technical player. This band music is an experience not just a listen. The keyboard player is the mastermind of the band and writes pretty much all their original music, every instrument and backing tracks.
Thank you for reacting to the best band on the planet, with the best singer of all time and the best composer today. You can find better singers in some isolated style, even with greater ranges. But no one has ever stepped foot on this planet who brought together so many styles, techniques and range as Floor Jansen. So, she is certainly the best of all time, when you add up everything she is capable of doing, it is surreal. She can, in addition to all other techniques, hold a note for 18 seconds (ad astra) at the end of a show (wembley).
NIghtwish sound amazing live. Not just the skill of the band members, but the technical clarity and balance of the sound as well. Please try some other Nightwish songs: Romanticide, Nemo, Dead Boy's Poem, Sleeping Sun, Storytime, Phantom of the Opera, Shoemaker, Gethsemane, Greatest Show on Earth, How's the Heart, Poet and the Pendulum. Try some with their first vocalist, Tarja, as well as Floor.
Anyone who thinks this is “just noise”, should rethink their entire knowledge of music. This performance is remarkably tight. The sound, for a live performance, is absolutely incredible. More of a “perfect storm” live performance. I challenge you to find a live performance which is better.
Hello Nightwish Army reporting from the Netherlands. Welcome to the wonderful world of Nightwish. They are from Finland. And they make Symphonic Metal. What you've heard here is just the tip of what this band can do. Nightwish really hits you in your heart. And that's what makes this band so unique. Her name is Floor Jansen and she is Dutch. There were 82,000 people there. I happily refer you to Gabriel Bardac's comment (he'll be here soon) for a list with lots of song suggestion. Watch out for the Nightwish Army. Greetings from the Netherlands.
yep, its a distorted onset which then turns to a musical theater voice (supported with an adequate body language/gesture/storytelling presentation) ...
Nightwish Army UK Eastern Division reporting... GLS isn't even in my top 6 so if you want to have an experience take the Nightwish journey and discover their Celtic folk rock, ballads, heavy metal etc. Re vocal choices in this song, byes everything is deliberate and there is a video on Floor's YT channel in which she explains every choice and vocal change. If you are into ballads try Sleeping Sun from Masters of Rock 2016 and Dead Boy's Poem from Buenos Aires 2018. Heavier? 7 Days to the Wolves from Wembley 2015; Weak Fantasy from Tampere 2015. In Yours is an Empty Hope from Wembley you will hear full growl. Something unclassifiable? Shoemaker, the music video. And so much more. For Marco the bass player also singing, my no 2 is Song of Myself from this Wacken show. But try Nightwish version of Pink Floyd's High Hopes, from Hartwall Areena 2005...
Welcome to the show Dr. Dan. For a softer sound from Floor, check out the newest single from Nightwish. Lantern Light. they haven't had a chance to perform this one yet. Nightwish is most definitely best live.
Welcome to the Nightwish army 🙂And thank you for teaching us useful things about singing. In my humble opinion, Floor is the most versatile singer in the world, from classical vocals to deep heavy growling... You need to see more of that! If you want more Nightwish, just follow the list that Gabriel has sent you. It's a nice journey with a lot more surprises yet to come. I'm curious to see your reactions to those!
If you ever tried to play a heavy distorted E-Guitar you know that these people absolutely know how to play very precise ;-) That aside, Nightwish is very unique, there's so much to explore and it doesn't end there because Floor has her own solo career as well ...
Nightwish Army, South Carolina, USA......Dr Dan, check out the Nightwish performance of "the Phantom of the Opera" live Amsterdam show with Henk Poort as the Phantom.....she'll give you a lesson on breath control.......
Others have mentioned 'Lanternlight' as a ballad worth a listen. Floor's emotive singing is difficult to describe but, put it this way, you will need a lot of Kleenex. I've heard that Floor is banned from singing 'Lanternlight' live anywhere in her native Netherlands due to fear of flooding:)
The entire Wacken concert was recorded, so you have plenty to work with right there. Ghost Love Score gets the bulk of the attention - as well it should - but every song is terrific. The most popular, after _GLS,_ are _Storytime_ and _Ever Dream,_ and you see countless recommendations for those two. (Personally, I think _Bless the Child_ is an overlooked gem.) And by all means, check out the opening number, Dark Chest of Wonders, for a lesson in how to get a crowd fired up in a matter of seconds.
Hey Dan just loved your mixture of raw amazement and reaction plus your professional vocal analysis.......and yes definitely the GOAT female metal vocalist indeed.
there is a number on there second latest outlet ore LP called Schumacher where the outro is Floor singing opera on Latin when ai herd that first time my torts ware that this is impossible to pull of life but she just did it and even a few weeks before the berth of her new dater she ware doing that life and in concert she is top professional like her brothers in the band and she master's all kind of vocal hard soft heigh opera tones and deed growls and can due moats genres if she wants to
Tge symphony (the London Philharmonic) and the choir (l forget their name) are backtracks from the record. The drummer controls the click trac and backtrack in addition to his relentless drumming.
Great reaction! Just follow Gabriel’s recommendations, if you want to hear more. For me, Floor is the best female singer in this planet. And yes, Nightwish is best enjoyed live. 🤘🔥
Hello sir, The band was Finnish at the start, Floor Jansen (pronounced as Yunsen) is Dutch and Troy , not here at stage and plays several instruments like Irish (Uillean) bagpipes and sings too. Holland is world famous for their female leadzangers of Symohonic metal bands. Floor, Simone from Epica (Dutch world famous band and bff of Floor) Sharon of Within Temptation, Anneke from the Gathering and Marcella from Stream of Passion are some examples. The classical instruments are the best muciscians in London, like the choir too. They always work with Nightwish. Thuomas, keyboard and piano is the mastermind behind their music and is known as the Metal Mozart. Some other awesome songs: -Everything by Nightwish -Sancta Terra Epica with Floor too -Staba MatarDolorosa (Floor Simone) - Aryeon - The day the world…. Arjan Lucassen is a Dutch guitarplayer but also THE master of Prog Metal. Ayreon is his project and features the BEST singers out there in 1csing. You will love it!! Thank you and greets from Holland
you could listen to her 'shallow' - lady gaga cover which might fit into your usual stuff - and demonstrates how extraordinary she also is with other genres ...
Hi Dr Dan, and thanks for the reaction! Sorry for my bad english but if ou love to hear Nightwish , i recommanded you to listen : The Greatest Show on Earth (live in Wembley With spécial guest Richard Dawkins or live in Tampere, both with subtitles !! 👍)
Hi, Dr. Dan down under. Welcome to the magical, mesmerising world of Nightwish. Created by the Metal Mozart, Tuomas Holopainen. Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 🤘🫡
This is just one side of Floor. She can sing anything. From soft to powerhouse music. Floor is just so amazing both as an artist and as a person. Now Nightwish has stopped touring Floor does a lot of solo shows in her home country of The Netherlands and shows her other side combining new motherhood and running her household, her love for the countryside, horses and animals, opening up about her battle with cancer and her singing talent. She will be doing a theatre tour in the Netherlands next year. Don’t get me wrong Nightwish is still her priority, they just released a new fantastic album.
Hai, if you liked Floor in thuis song, you have to hear her with Henk Poort - singing phantom of the opera. Can you inmage what you will be hearing? Item also has "a surprice"... 😉
Floor Jansen is Dutch and in The Netherlands we have more symphonic Metal bands for example Epica. That is also a very good symphonic metal band, which also regularly performs with a live symphony orchestra.
Floor did coment on this. This is towards the end(70 min in), her first time as a real band member, 80k in the crowd. The insane anxiety was now gone. The soft parts was the hard ones, the power parts was just leting them free.
Hi Dan. Nice reaction. Tip for the next NW….Shoemaker, Diechbrand or Hellfest 2022 ( interesting for a vocalcoach) EverDream ( Wacken 2013), Tribal 2022 and an Ocean with Strange Islands ( new album Yesterwynde 2024). Greetings from the Netherlands.
Be aware that Floor did not only do Nightwish. She also did (and still does) solo stuff. Mainly solo stuff nowadays as Nightwish is pausing live performances. She made a (pop) album and she had bands and projects before like Northward, Revamp and After Forever. She also did opera once on Dutch TV. Floor Jansen (pronounce Yansen) is Dutch by the way. And indeed she is born to sing. She is on stage from 16 y/o. I think she is now 42 and sounding better than ever. Her technique and versatility are no1 in the world of female voices. And I don't even like metal.
I heard rumors that after Anette fell ill during the US tour, Tuomas, desperate for a replacement, asked Ken Tamplin to replace her. But Ken said no. Thank God we have Floor singing live.

Dutch division of the NWA reporting for duty. I saw Gabriel already gave you the list. Have a nice ride down the roller coaster into the rabbit hole Nightwish provides 🤘🏻
Never apologize for pausing and rewatching, we love seeing you finding and enjoying the gems we know and love!
Greetings from The Netherlands
You don't understand how deep of a rabbit hole you've just fallen into, enjoy your stay! To tell you the truth though, this place is kinda awesome!
If you want to hear another Nightwish performance with Floor, please watch the live duet with Henk Poort, singing The Phantom of the Opera!!!
PS, not the Beste Zangers version but the one live on stage.
When you combine harmony, energy and incredible skill - this is the result. Nightwish in a nutshell.
There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band.
She belongs on the Mt Rushmore of Vocalist

UK Army popping in for a great reaction
If you want to check out some non-metal songs by Floor, she was on a Dutch tv-show called "Beste Zangers" (Best Singers) and those performances are certainly worth watching (especially her version of Shallow). Also, the songs she did on her personal TH-cam channel are great. And of course, like everyone else already commented, more Nightwish would be great as well :)
Right. Do you the malesinger in that programm?

But not yet
Nightwish Army South France Division reporting for duty. 😁
🤘😎
Their concerts are 1 1/2 hrs night after night. She takes CARE of her voice!
Greetings from Finland 🤘🤘
I've already seen Floor live after a vacation and I've already seen Floor live at the end of her strength and heavily pregnant. What distinguishes Floor is that the quality of her voice and her performance always remains at the highest level. There are certainly thousands of great singers in the world who celebrate deserved success in their genre ... but then Floor comes along and inspires in every genre she wants to serve. Floor is probably the most versatile singer in the whole world at the moment.
This song’s melody-goosebumps every time!
We all know by now that you have a special place in your heart for Marko. 😉😘❤

Amazing singer.

SO GOOD!!! Enjoyed this!!
It's a powerful performance, isn't it?
Happy you met our Dutch Valkyrie Metal Goddess Floor and Nightwish.
Please do more, it’s all this good!
Thank you! Will do!
This song is late in the set, #13 of 15 which makes it even more impressive IMO.
That is impressive!

Hello Mr.
Wow. She is a great singer and very smart about how she sings. I appreciate your review pointing out her technique choices. And the band is tight.
She really is, isn't she? Floor is fantastic!
Great reaction, new subscriber here :) Keep going with Nightwish I can quarantee you won't be dissappointed. Greetings from Finland!

This isnt really a flashy band they are all business, everyone is a technical player. This band music is an experience not just a listen.
The keyboard player is the mastermind of the band and writes pretty much all their original music, every instrument and backing tracks.
It's a pleasure to listen to you, more Nightwish reactions would be great. You might even get a Floorgasm.
NWArmy here, welcome and enjoy your ride into this amazing band 🎉. Greetings from Greece 💯👏
Σωστή!
Please try some other Nightwish songs: Romanticide,
Nemo, Dead Boy's Poem, Sleeping Sun, Storytime, Phantom of the Opera, Shoemaker,
Gethsemane, Greatest Show on Earth, How's the Heart, Poet and the Pendulum. Try some
with their first vocalist, Tarja, as well as Floor.
Anyone who thinks this is “just noise”, should rethink their entire knowledge of music. This performance is remarkably tight. The sound, for a live performance, is absolutely incredible. More of a “perfect storm” live performance.
I challenge you to find a live performance which is better.
I appreciate your passion for music and the diversity of music you enjoy
Hello
Nightwish Army reporting from the Netherlands.
Now by complete contrast, check out Lantern Light by NW. Very few bands/singers have such a huge variety in output.
Thank you

Nightwish is a genre of their own….❤ they even have a jazzy song. The are more than versitale. 😊

If you ever tried to play a heavy distorted E-Guitar you know that these people absolutely know how to play very precise ;-)
That aside, Nightwish is very unique, there's so much to explore and it doesn't end there because Floor has her own solo career as well ...
Don't underestimate what Floor can do live, without studio tricks.
Other Nightwish songs to listen to? ALL of them 😆
Nightwish Army, South Carolina, USA......Dr Dan, check out the Nightwish performance of "the Phantom of the Opera" live Amsterdam show with Henk Poort as the Phantom.....she'll give you a lesson on breath control.......
I saw so many breakdowns of this song and yours is the best. and I'm just a music fan knows nothing about vocals... thanks!
Nothing can beat a Floorgasm on a late Wednesday night
In case no one mentioned it, this was song 13 of a 15 song set. One of which was an instrumental in the middle of the show.
Floor is pure magic! Best female rock singer on the planet! Have seen her several times live. She never misses a note!

Some other awesome songs:
-Everything by Nightwish
-Sancta Terra Epica with Floor too
-Staba MatarDolorosa (Floor Simone)
- Aryeon - The day the world….
Arjan Lucassen is a Dutch guitarplayer but also THE master of Prog Metal. Ayreon is his project and features the BEST singers out there in 1csing. You will love it!!

Good one.
Texas division checking in!
Nightwish Army Indonesia division checking in. There can only be one, and her name is Floor Jansen.

I'd also recommend checking their Ever Dream, also from Wacken 2013. Floor has rated it as the hardest song in the set to sing.
Floor is a vocal acrobat!
