  • A mini-bugger of sorts, the Blank Saver is a must-have stillwater pattern. We tie this one balanced style.

That's the best videography I've seen. That is awesome for detail. Thanks

Hey Guys, nice pattern. Yes it does look like a wooly bugger but I have seen Phil Rowley tie balanced flies. Great fish catchers. I am going to try the longer tails because I like to have longer tails on wet flies as well. I like it. Thanks for sharing, All the best, Sean

To counter wrap a hackle that is wound from front to back you need to wrap the wire in the same clockwise direction. Wrapping the wire in the opposite direction for a counter wrap is when both materials are wound from the back. The fly in this video was NOT counter wrapped.

What other color combinations work with this pattern?

Nice fly! I have tied cased caddisflies in a similar way, to avoid them getting stuck in the bottom.
Is there a purpose with not going all the way to the "bead" with the dubbing, leaving a "neck" of tying thread?

That's a good option as well. Balance is more important so whatever works for you...

Great fly Curtis, thanks for sharing. Have you tried using sequin pins on your balanced flies? Phil Rowley turned me on to them and they work great. Especially when you don't want to trim the pins.

Very similar to these pins actually.

Trimming the regular pins in a pain and somewhat dangerous. Sequin pins are really the way to go.

Why use a green bead when all the rest of the fly is dark/flashy?

It's a common thing to add a "hot spot" on flies, so the bead serves that purpose here. All we know is that the fish eat it much better when it has a hot bead.

Sorry this pattern isn’t going to work, needs the signature lance Egan utc 70 red thread and hot spot behind the bead to catch fish... 😂😂😂 kidding of course, great pattern.
