I grew up in Aberdeen and I'm an aviation buff, so have spent a long time looking at the underneath of offshore helicopters.. this is only a guess, but it may serve a couple of purposes but sadly the one that springs to mind is that when ditched, helicopters tend to capsize immediately. As such, the chevrons may well simply assist a rescue crew in determining the cockpit and therefore orientation of a submerged helicopter that is still at the surface but upside down.
I am hoping that isn't the reason, and that an actual qualified helo opinion can chime in! It seems to be mostly a feature on civilian and SAR/Coastguard helicopters operating in the UK. That it doesn't seem to be a feature of most helicopters that operate over land, suggest the over water mission has something to do with it.

Even in England as you like too point out, helicopters are classed as single engined, twin engined or even triple engined like the Merlin. So you're talking out your arse. It's just a global thing.
One more thing, an engine has pistons as in it must be a neccessity? What about rotary engines then?
