In 2018, I bought a 2017 Elantra from a dealer. Was a rental vehicle. Had 40,000 miles. Only paid $11,000. My son now owns. Still rolling down the road. Apart from a failed coil, it's been very reliable and economical. Now has well over 100,000 miles.
I see lots of those in the wrecking yard due to bad transmissions, my 04 Honda Accord has 270k miles on it and it is still going strong. Got it with the manual transmission though as they too have had problems with their automatics. If Honda can't build a good automatic I dang sure wouldn't trust a Hyundai. But at least it isn't a Kia. I still have a 99 Accent that still runs great w/5sp manual trans and an 08 Kia Rio w/auto trans. That Rio has been nothing but a pain in my six and oddly enough those are the two models of those brands I don't see in the wrecking yard that often.
@Rundark- I get it. But buying a 2017 Accord back in 2018 would have cost considerably more than the Elantra. My point was more about buying rental cars can be a positive experience. Also when I bought the car it had both dealer assurance and manufacturers warranty. Google, million mile Elantra. They can last a long time and can be a good alternative to buying an overpriced Japanese car.
I bought a 2016 Elantra with 78000 miles from Hertz. It's had the transmission replaced, but is still going strong with 170000 plus miles as my nephew's car now and still doesn't use oil. I guess it was built on a good day.
@Rundark- my sons 2003 Accord now has 203,000 miles. It's an oil burner. Yes, it's been somewhat reliable, but having the inconvenience and expense of constantly checking and adding engine oil is a ball ache. Other things have gone wrong, ac compressor and refrigerant leaks, failed axles and transmission seals, power steering pump. Honda's are not that great.
They put windmills on every ridgetop in our Pennsylvania county with claims of greatly reduced energy costs, they been there around 20 years and the rates never went down.
Rates haven’t gone down, but they are nowhere near as high as other countries that still rely on mostly coal. Need to shut down the rest of these expensive ancient coal thermal plants that cost a fortune to maintain, natural gas is way cheaper and cleaner. No coal dust causing cancer and destroying waterways. The jury is still out on wind but turbines are a lot cheaper than they used to be.
electric rates have doubled SoCal in just the last few years. Bills used to be in $80-$100 during months not running AC but now it's approaching $200. And during the summer, I don't want to think about even though I set thermostat at 82F
Everything has gone up in SoCal lately so what does a tank of gas run? The rest of the country only have a $50-60 bill a month which is a tank of gas worth.
The price of solar is down 50% in the last few years. If you had bought 100% solar with Storage Batteries then it would be paid for in ten years and most systems come with a 25 year guarantee. Wonder what the price from Duke energy will be in 2 more years?
@@miketrusky476 Yes, that's why I'm putting 550 watt bifacial solar panels with batteries on my metro Los Angeles home. Electric rates are high and will only go higher so makes sense to get it installed now circa June 2024.
Toyota reliability is in the crapper 24 Tundra and Lexus and TX, engines have metal shavings some as low as 200 miles to 66,000 engines blowing up! Glad I have a 22 Tacoma TRD PRO!!!
Was a Ford fan boy all my life my dad worked for FORD in OHIO for 43 years he started at 17 years old. He took his life 5 years ago. I bought my first none Ford. I bought 23 trucks,3 SVT mustangs a 96 MYSTIC Cobra and 2004 Cobra’s which where the easiest to modify all from our local dealer! My Father left me a 67 mustang GT 500 KR 428 Cobra Jet he bought it has 34578 on the odometer car keep in a air conditioner private place I love talking it to car shows people love it, makes them smile and brings back memories it’s awesome!!!
My neighbor has a 2016 ranger, he had to replace both front brake lines because of cracking. The one on right was leaking and he lost his brakes. Cheap Ford quality. I've had 3 65 mustang and a 69 and never once replaced a brake line.
The rental companies LEASE the cars from Toyota... and they have to be maintained as per lease agreements.... You RENT off the Lease company...... at least in my country.. So at the end of 3 years or 45k kilometres the cars go back to Toyota.. who "refurbish" them and drip feed them onto the market.... so the price never crashes and you can't get a bargain...
I rented a corolla hatchback with less than 3K miles for a 700 mile overnight trip. I drove between 80 and 90 most of the time, didnt abuse it but definitely did what I could to break it in.
Rented a 2018 chevy malibu in sep 2018, for a 2k+ mi trip. Had barely 1k on the odo... discovered after 4 states it was basically void of ANY oil must have had a real bad leak somewhere. We simply topped it off twice throughout the week.
@@why97359 Always always always check under the bonnet when you are in the rental company yard. That's where you spot the potential problems....like low oil, low coolant, no washer fluid, worm serpentine belt, no brake fluid etc etc.... and at the first opportunity on the road check tyre pressures...set them to the style of your driving. Plus check under bonnet every morning on a long distance trip...rental car/borrowed car.........or your own. No surprises that way... Worth an email/text to the hire company about the excessive consumption after day 1... then having been warned they can replace the vehicle or authorise expenditure on oil at their cost? I hope you kept receipts and claimed back the oil costs??????

Running an ICE to power a generator makes a lot of sense....and is why locomotives and heavy off-road machinery uses this technology because it eliminates the need for a transmission. The ICE is most efficient at one speed and load and needing it to operate over a wide range of speeds and loads reduces the efficiency. The engine running the generator can run at its' optimum speed and load and while there are losses going from the generator to wheel motor it's more simple than going through a complicated transmission and clutch/torque converter.
They will never permanently lower your electricity bills. Even if they are lower at first the companies will raise your rates, do not fall for this as a community.
Compare energy prices in the USA to elsewhere, they’d be even more competitive if these junker coal plants closed and switched to natural gas. Unfortunately politicians sticking their noses in the generating business, energy companies will ask for increases to subsidize mostly automated coal mining. But with the discovery of significant rare earths in US coal, maybe they can swap to that business.
I live in a blue state in the Northeast. Back in the 1960's, the electric companies promised discounts to every homeowner that put electric heat in their houses. Guess where those discounts are today? Gone!
My first Toyota was an Echo from Enterprise. It had 24K on it, so I still had a year of warranty. I had it for three years before stupidly trading it in on a Yaris. It never needed any repairs.
We have a local mall with excess capacity in their parking lots. They have been stockpiling new Teslas for the past two years. Recently they appear to have been adding more than usual and there must be 200-300 sitting there. I drove through and most have flat tires, garbage all over them and even the Cyber Trucks sitting there (recently added) look like the shells are rusting or at least discoloring.
Finally, a car company takes a Q from the diesel locomotive engines, they work the same way, engine runs generator, generator runs electric motor- runs wheels
I would expect that many of these rental Teslas were fast-charged by the drivers, as they would not have been concerned by shortened battery life due to the excessive heat build-up from a fast charge process. I hope that people buying these cars are ready to deal with battery replacement issues down the road.
Agreed. I love Teslas, but I would not touch one of these rentals with a 10 foot pole. Plus, you can find many non-rental Teslas for that same price that haven't been abused. Hertz is nuts for selling them at that price!
Fast charging hasn't shown to be that much worse for battery health than charging at 32 to 48 amps. The batteries are thermally managed and won't have excessive heat build-up as you claim. Battery replacements for Tesla's will be much further down the road than people like you are hypothesizing with no evidence.
@@cardboardandplastic9267 Tesla used to not recommend regular fast charging for the reason I mentioned. If you're talking about the results reported by Electrek then look at Wikipedia's entry on the company: "Electrek is an American news website dedicated to electric transportation and sustainable energy.[2] Electrek is known for its extensive, positive coverage of electric transportation in general and Tesla specifically. Their positive coverage of Tesla has been criticized by some automotive journalists.[3][4][5] Its main authors have disclosed ownership of Tesla stock, substantial profit from referrals to Tesla, and ownership of Tesla cars." If you go to Battery University and look at best practices for the care and maintenance of Lithium-ion batteries then you still see fast charging not recommended for these batteries. Internal cooling measures would reduce the damage done to the batteries by fast charging, as compared to not having cooling mechanisms but elevated temperatures would still exist locally within the cells.
My neighborhood in So Cal is full of Teslas or other EV. Charging in their garages. Every single house here, 250 homes have solar. My electric bill is 120 per year. We do not have gas. Costs more to run my Prius than my house. Corruption has made your bill go up.
I drive a 2008 GMC Envoy 6-cylinder 4x4 bought new. It's a great vehicle and I just turned 95,000 miles. Low mileage for sure, and nothing major ever broke. Used it for 3 years towing a 2,800 lb. race car, too, and made sure it never shifted into overdrive. Always used 3rd gear towing and still got 14.5 mpg highway.
I drive a 1998 Ford Windstar 3.0L V6 with 132,000 on it. Does me good. Even though I wish I could afford something newer. When I say newer, I mean like a 2010 minivan with a slider on both sides. My van is TINY! I also travel, so it's better on gas than a big van.
I have the EXACT same van with 256k miles on it 😁 it's all rusted out though, paint peeling off and too many problems to fix, probably gonna scrap it soon. Looking at a 96 with less problems and can probably swap some part over from mine.
Here in western Oregon we most be an oddball outlier! Every time I travel anywhere we see more & more Teslas. Even see some Rivians at times. I have gone to all battery electric for our yard tools. Mowers, chainsaws, trimmers, hedge trimmers etc. Never going back to gas. Electric cheaper, easier. No hassles with fuel problems or sources of fuel. The green energy costs have raised our grid power 17% & is going to increase 9% next January! Coal plant in Boardman Oregon was decommissioned was dumb idea!
@@AStanton1966 less than $2000. Bought them all used. Some mono crystal, some poly crystal. All the original panels are still working after all these years.
I drive an Opel Astra. It the same car sold in the US as a Buick Verano. But an estate with a 1.7 liter red circle Izuzu turbo diesel and manual transmission. I shut the EGR of, still passes swedish emission controls. Best car I ever owned.
I bought my 2017 Spark from them. They didn't tell me it was a "business owned" vehicle till I was signing the paperwork 🙄 But it's a 5-speed so I doubt it was a rental. They also said they did an oil change but when I checked the oil after I got home it was dirty and a quart and half overfilled. 🙄 But they were the only ones who could get me the vehicle with the options I wanted. Even the dealer couldn't order one brand new with the options I wanted... smh. Three years later I'm very happy with the car.
Quite true! Still driving my 84 S10 long bed P/U with 5 speed manual which I bought new in 1985 as a junior at Oregon State University. Now 68 & in the process of selling a triplex which my family has had for >55 years & soon to retire from residential maintaining work.
Then the other older batteries will fail shortly and had to start all over again to replace those too. I don't see the point on doing it again, and again, and again
@@dvaunt3516 Rich did a price breakdown and analysis of battery condition. It was $28 000 for a new battery as opposed to $8 000 to replace only dead cells. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
2014 VW Passat SE 1.8 EA888 with tiptronic asin trans bought new. 167,431 miles. Best car Ive owned in my 67 years. Zero squeaks or rattles. Leisurely trip setting cruise control at 57 mph, sunroof open, windows open 100 miles trip to Pa. over 40 mpg. Not typical driving situation but it's going strong. Maintenance worked on my Chattanooga built VW. Just sayin
Power scooters and bicycles have surprisingly decent ranges. My neighbour rides the 120 km distance from the city to our country estates at highway speed (80-100 kmh) and says there's still some juice left. That's on a cheapo DIY contraption with two 5 KW motors. It probably handles like a brick but he's still alive.
Replacement of battery is big cost. There is a company in Serbia that replace battery for 10 % cost of new one. If possible they replace just parts of broken cells. Not throwing 90% off good cells in junk is big cost cut. Nobody talks about that. Why? I don't know. I mean how stupid is throwing all battery that cost half 50% of a car? If you can replace few broken cells and then you have new healthy batteries. Nikola Tesla, Ruđer Bošković,.... Maybe Rimac In sports... Jokić, Đoković Just common sense as Scotty says.
I don't know about the "never buy from a rental" company, but I was skeptical about anything Hertz had to offer, their cars were obviously beat up and not maintained and dirty. I was shopping for a Surburban or Tahoe and found a gem at ENTERPRISE Rental in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was in very clean condition with only minor scuffs, no dents or dings, the interior was mostly perfect. Looked it over thoroughly and bought it. It's been an awesome vehicle for the 3 years that I've owned it. Had to put new tires on it, a new battery and regular oil changes and that's it. BUT it's also a gas vehicle, I will never own an EV if I don't HAVE to.
@@GH-oi2jf Our daughter-in-law bought one from Enterprise as well, and 2 years into ownership, the turbo took a dump into the intake of the engine and a new engine was needed. Turns out that those cars require meticulous attention to oil changes and maintenance....which she wasn't doing. Full synthetic oil and change every 3000 miles, not the 5K they recommend.
Scottie , I don't know if you're ever gonna see this.... I watch a lot of youtube..... I am so sick and tired Intros..... And I don't know how many videos of yours i've watched, and I still like your intro..... Thank you...
Must have Eversource. My electric went up 100% Rates are at the point where I can setup my own solar for about $12K and it would pay for itself in 3 years.
Since when did the Tesla Semi not meet spec? Pretty wise not to build thousands of the prototype. Huge factory is being built as I type to assemble the final design being finalized.
But where in the USA is Hertz selling used Teslas for 25k? Is it somplace on the east coast where a recharge station is nearly impossible to find? Or is it in Cali where the infrastucture to support the car is available. Because out here in Cali, people are buying the heck out of that car.
Dear Scotty l've got a 2008 Pontiac Torrent with that wonderful 400 motor in it. It drives like a dream at 240k kilometers. I looked at new but no more 400 motors available. So l've opted for the Cuba syndrome. My husband re-furbished it for me. Cleaned up the rust, new paint, new tires and breaks. I am a happy camper once more. Why is Marry Bara wasting her time with all this other nonsense when they have such a terrific engine in their past? And by the way: thanks for all the great, honest, videos you've put out over the years. We watch them all the time and have learned a lot. Cheers from 🇨🇦
I drive a 2002 Buick Park Avenue with over 217,000 miles and it still runs great. If they want to give me an electric car I would take it, but I wouldn't spend good money on it. Then when it needs major repairs I can just sell it for scrap.
My son went to Nashville recently and thought it would be fun to rent a Tesla. He said it was the worst decision ever. He said it was a nightmare trying to charge it there and they had to figure out the trip in reference to site seeing vs battery power. He stated it was a trip killer…. Hmmmm
Question for Tesla is what is the remaining warranty on the battery and electric motors. If these still have warranty for a few years then not much else can go wrong.
When my son went to college in a nearby town I went with him to help get the electric connected. There was a choice what to connect to. Wind or coal, of course it cost more to connect to the wind power grid and hell no to that.
You don't connect to wind or coal power. Some people that have extra income want to support alternative energy sources and pay more for that. Do you actually think they are giving you coal or wind power on demand?
Locomotive Trains are designed that way....they have diesel powered electric generators to make the electricity to power the "trucks" that house the electric motors which turn the axles. That Enginuity has been around since the 1940's I believe and is still used today.
don't know if that picture of the bike is the actual bike he is talking about........but just looking at the crank gear it's obvious that the rider would have to have an extremely high cadence to reach 50mph
Salt water and salt air tears the crap out of everything. These windmills out at sea will not hold up. Maintenance and replacement of these windmills will be out of control. $$$
The subsidies that go to the owners are substantial. Im sure that is the only real reason for these things. The noise that goes al with them are sure to mess with nature.
I think you have got the short stroke thing wromg. The longer the stroke the more efficient is the rule. But the RPM of the engine is much lower....slower engine.
I worked with big diesel engine my entire career, the goal was highest efficiency. Super long stroke slow speed diesel was the absolute best. There were some that ran at under 100 RPM at full speed. Unfortunately NoX is the result of high temp & high press combustion. A known carcinogen 😲
This wonderful new Toyota sounds like a Chevy Volt from 2011 to 2019. A great idea, these companies should just use simple diesel engines as a backup power source to get rid of the range issues (or range anxiety) issues.
Scotty, I don’t think HPC will be sending you a bike anytime soon. They are going to cost $29k and have a limited production of less than 30. It looks like a publicity stunt to me. But I have got my 80lb Himiway Cruiser e-bike up to 33 on a level surface when peddling as hard as possible.
My model S has 181,000 miles and I love it. It’s a 2013 on the original battery. Talk to an actual owner who owns one of these cars versus people who’ve never owned one before. On my TH-cam channel I’ve got videos of all of my electric car history
Actually the waterfall is completely natural, the pipe originates at another water source and it’s just being used to redirect the flow to the top of the waterfall.
The pictures I saw shows the pipe running from the pool at the bottom of the falls pool back up the face of the cliff to the top to be cycled down again.
Scotty... Help.! I'm changing plugs on my 08 Trailblazer 4.2 My problem is that the rubber part of the ignition plug are stuck inside. I try WD-40 AND PULLING. I DONT WANT TO BREAK IT IN THERE What's my next step ? 😢
I’ve been thinking about buying one of these used teslas but not the hertz but more so private owned ones what do you think for like 20k to replace my used Volvo Xc60(bought it from my mom)
I grew up in central California, there was an area near that was always very windy so naturally there was a ton of wind turbines around there. Even as a kid I noticed that anywhere from 50% to 75% of them weren't turning. I saw them a lot because there was a lake there we would water ski on nearby. Even on a windy day, no turning. I hear those MFs have rebates to build them but none to maintain/repair. So what companies do is instead of maintaining them they build new ones.
That is a smart decision. If I sent you $20,000 you would burn it as well? :p Have you ever driven a Tesla or tried charging at home? Ever try the supercharger network? In California having a Tesla is easier to own than a gas car. By the way, my family has been 100% EV since 2016 with over 400,000 miles on our EV's. If you gave me a gas car, I would take it and sell it to someone else. I sure as heck wouldn't want to deal with higher fuel costs and constant maintenance nonsense like oil changes.
Not sure I understood new Toyota engine. Gas to electric drive? My understanding every time you convert from one type of energy source to another loss is always involved. BUT if eletric drive then you can capture braking energy. Sounds just like current hybrid using Atkinson cycle gas engine but no gas drive at all. I thought chevy VOLT was like that? NOT bolt but Volt. Guess will see.
@@phiksit In my case, battery life is the problem. I don’t want to spend 24 hours charging after driving to and from work each day. An since I live where it can be -20f in the winter and 105f in the summer and with snow in the winter, I don’t have time to play all these games.
I purchased a used Tesla from hertz for 23k week later vehicle won’t run I took it to 9 mechanic shops and every 1 of them don’t know how to fix it or they don’t wanna touch it and they all said most likely battery replacement and if they could fix it no guarantee and the bill would be over 20k price so know I’m stuck with no vehicle but at least I’m saving the environment and carbon taxes
I guess someone needs to keep buying gas. Me, I’m happy with my Tesla. I pay under $10 to go 300 miles charged off-peak at home. About half the running costs of my old Prius (whose original battery was still working fine at 300k miles when I traded it). That, and decent ride, 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, 300 mile range. I expect the battery will last 250k miles or more. Elon’s a crank, but the car is my favorite of any i’ve owned.
Scotty, just know that the folks that go 80mph with an electric bike, wear protective gear all over the body; shins, knees, body-protector, helmet. You don't wanna go that fast. Especially at your age. No offense. Unless you're on the salt-flats. D Shoot a video of it!
Dudes around here go 80 mph in the suburbs on their Harley's and Jappa's wearing only a 't' shirt shorts and flip flops. So what's different about an E-Bicycle?😮

The price of solar is down 50% in the last few years. If you had bought 100% solar with Storage Batteries then it would be paid for in ten years and most systems come with a 25 year guarantee. Wonder what the price from Duke energy will be in 2 more years?

Never buy from a rental company. As the saying goes "It's a rental - don't be gentle".

Always always always check under the bonnet when you are in the rental company yard.

BMW tried that already with the i3 and that wound up failing too.

Same is true here in Oregon as well!

Finally, a car company takes a Q from the diesel locomotive engines, they work the same way, engine runs generator, generator runs electric motor- runs wheels
I was thinking the same thing!
Most are turbine, not piston any more.
Fisker Karma worked that way, and not the first. Pretty sure there were some in the early days of motoring.
Notch 8 on the freeway and dynamic braking!!
I've often wondered why they didn't make a car where the engine made electricity to drive the wheels.
If you're talking about the results reported by Electrek then look at Wikipedia's entry on the company:
"Electrek is an American news website dedicated to electric transportation and sustainable energy.[2] Electrek is known for its extensive, positive coverage of electric transportation in general and Tesla specifically. Their positive coverage of Tesla has been criticized by some automotive journalists.[3][4][5] Its main authors have disclosed ownership of Tesla stock, substantial profit from referrals to Tesla, and ownership of Tesla cars."
If you go to Battery University and look at best practices for the care and maintenance of Lithium-ion batteries then you still see fast charging not recommended for these batteries. Internal cooling measures would reduce the damage done to the batteries by fast charging, as compared to not having cooling mechanisms but elevated temperatures would still exist locally within the cells.

I think you have got the short stroke thing wromg. The longer the stroke the more efficient is the rule. But the RPM of the engine is much lower....slower engine.
You’re right. Diesel engines usually have a longer stroke which means less rpm but wayyy more torque.

Whose fault is that?
Maybe if the subsidies to build future wind farms were given only to those with a maintenance record???
Carrot.....stick.
I wouldn't want a Tesla, even if you give it to me, i would send it directly to the dump.

That is a smart decision. If I sent you $20,000 you would burn it as well? :p Have you ever driven a Tesla or tried charging at home? Ever try the supercharger network?
