A New Way to Learn to Read English | Narda Pitkethly | TEDxSunValley

- Narda Pitkethly created a system that profoundly simplifies learning how to read. Watch how her system reduces illiteracy and many of its negative consequences. Narda Pitkethly moved to Japan after college and discovered the Japanese had created a simple method of learning to read, called Hiragana. Through their method, Narda learned to read Japanese in a week. Within three months, her comprehension allowed her to communicate freely in her home city of Fukuoka.
In 1988 Narda moved from Japan to Sun Valley because the small community and year-round outdoor activities enticed her. An accomplished glassblower, she often travels to Boise to create works of art.
When her daughter was identified as a challenged reader in the first grade, Narda discovered that English is one of the hardest languages in the world to learn to read, even for native speakers. Narda analyzed the English alphabet to understand why it is so difficult (1 in 4 children grow up without learning to read). She organized the letters in the same way the Japanese organized their Hiragana characters. Narda reveals an approach to the English language you have never seen before. It is a great one off guide for teaching children to read without the hard work. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my close friend Aubrey after many years got great success with it.

As a native Spanish speaker I MAKE FUN ONCE AND MAKE A THOUSAND TIMES at English because Spanish is a phonetic language (with very few exceptions). We do not need someone to tell us how to pronounce a word, just by seeing it written we can pronounce it perfectly (if you do not have any problem / disease of pronunciation or speech, of course) In Spanish, each vowel (we have only 5: a, e, i, oyu) has one and only one sound (NEITHER MORE NOR LESS) The same happens with almost all consonants. English is not a phonetic language and that makes it a clumsy and poorly structured language from its origins. Spanish is a THOUSAND TIMES better language than English.

I do appreciate this type of approach she settled to make it easier for english learners read every english word clearly and concisely. I admire her as one of those rare teachers who has the talent to inspire others/students

Don't forget that ch is also used for the "sh" sound in words such as machine, chef, and my favorite, schwa!

I perfectly read english (my 3rd language) but it made me think in other perspective about this and allowed me answer some questions I always had. It was a pleasure. Thank you. Wow! Great way to learn English.
English is really complex take for instance, the vowels. Knowing each vowel is challenging because it takes a lot of effort and knowledge from the teacher or tutor in order to impart it properly and accurately.

Finally, I've found something that proves what I was thinking about don't pronounce English words properly. Those many songs for a single letter is the root of my problem.

I AGREE!! And I had made a little phonics book for Korean English learners when I found differences English and Japanese or Korean letters. But that's for beginners. Korean letters, Hangeul can express all kinds of English sounds. So someday I want to share my methods..
As a Japanese,I'm really happy to know that Japanese "hiragana" gave her an inspiration for Narda.
At first, I though her idea won't help to read English, however my thinking was changed after listen to the boy's speech.
I'm dyslexic for English/Latin alphabet, but I found when learning Hiragana and kanji/Hanzi. I recognize it fast, and it's really encouraging me.

It's obvious to me that behind this presentation is a calm, clear mind. She should teach the world how to achieve that.
I do this in our many Nardagani books. Once our students learn the 12 symbols, they practice reading with the symbols. I have had terrific help creating engaging, even humous stories with morals on how to live more gently in our world.

I love your personal story and your sincere pride with your son! All three of my children struggled early on with reading despite the reading we did everyday, labels around the house, etc. the teachers struggled with teaching them as well. I leaned English pronunciation from dictionaries that have international phonetic alphabets (IPA) which have more natural and suggestive appearance than the Nardagani symbols. Equally important for leaning English are the accent position and splitting/linking of syllables. The speaker has some good ideas: i) use underline for silent alphabets, ii) place the symbols directly underneath the actual words.
This lead to the question: are there any children books which use IPA
I agree. Why create new symbols for sounds such as "sh" and "oo" when they already exist in the form of the IPA and are in widespread use in dictionaries, and are a de facto standard representation for these sounds?
I was also wondering whether there are any books written in IPA. It would be a great way to learn or revise one's IPA, or to learn to speak English with correct pronunciation.
