Hi Mason, the Magpul sling is primarily designed for carrying rifles. And that thick hardware + extra QD attachment is designed to carry your rifle in a 2 point or 1 point carrying style.
For sure Mapgpul will not design a lighter version of this strap as it would not be strong enough to carrying weapons, and that is also their of main focus of business.
As I'm a photographer and a tactical shooter, it's really nice to see that photo equipment has found its way in the tactical world. Another expample, Manfrotto tripods are the most used tripods to mount sniper rifles in the military snipers community.

I spent months wondering just what those little red dot items were on the cameras I saw! With this video: SOLVED!
    Terrific review! Thank you!!

I’m using RRS base plates for a couple of years now; this combined with the Peak Design strap system. Since three months I replaced the Peak Design system with the Magpul straps as all my base plates have QD inserts now.

Thanks Mason! I have a Black Rapid strap that I had to sew together after grabbing my camera just as the Black Rapid buckle opened - and was about to send my 5DMkIII heading to the ground! (true story). So I'll take a look at these two straps.

Hey Mason, How has the QD held up for you? I've had a few RRS brackets and just got a new one for a new camera. It has the QD mount which I thought was genius. I went on the same quest for failure stories with a camera, as while I've never had a QD fail on my rifle... I'm worried about the button brushing up against my hip and freeing my camera to the pavement.

At the end of the day its still all hanging on the 1/4 thread insert in the base of the camera.

RRS also sells just an attachment bracket that allows a pretty broad range of other straps to be used. Have you heard anything about it? And can you provide any update now that you've been (hopefully) using it for awhile?

The L-bracket for the Nikon D500 has two points, so you can detach the QD that connects to the buckle and use on the other point on the camera. If you don't want the camera to spin around :)

black rapid can be used if you are using a rucksack or strap is restricted and cannot be moved around..... I have peak design and sadly you cannot get camera up as it does not slide, You have to wiggle strap around to get camera up.

That is true, and an issue I have been frustrated with. The new RRS/Magpul system slides like the Black Rapid straps, so it doesn't have the binding problem the PD sling does.

Nice review. You can buy any single point strap, which will have far less hardware. Really right stuff probably chose this Magpul so they can offer a second attachment point on the camera.

Mason, I contacted Magpul about a cushioned pad to go with their Camera Strap and indicated they do not have a padded shoulder pad for it. You might wait to mention that.

I took the simpler route... I just bought a $16 sling swivel quick disconnect and replaced the threaded connector on my Black Rapid strap and now i can quick connect to my RRS L-bracket and don;t have to buy a new strap... you should be able to do this on a a variety of straps out there.
Magpul stuff is awesome, I have a bunch of their stuff... but its expensive.

As good as the RRS QD system is, I would need a 2 point attachment system out of the way of using the L-Bracket on a tripod. I like to keep the camera strap around my neck until the camera & lens is on the tripod and I am sure it stable. I have the Peak Design Anchor system on my Nikon strap. The Nikon strap doesn't bother me but, maybe it is because I haven't tried any others. Thanks for the vid.

Mason, I contacted RRS if all their L-brackets will work with this strap and they indicated no and do not plan to remake all their brackets to use with this strap. They do make L-brackets for new camera models but your out of luck for older cameras. They did say they are working on adapter plates to fit specific camera models and will update if you subscribe to their news letter.
