+akba666 But that's the whole issue isn't it? People these days are burrowed neck deep in their phones. I'm fairly sure you could pick their pockets and paint them orange and they'd be none the wiser till they arrived at their destination. How do you guys not feel disconnected with the world??
+Elistae you are a human. this is why you feel the disconnect. people like the ones you question make me question if they are indeed human. if they are, my bet is they are medicated with anti reps or something. it's increasingly common to see this reaction toward embracing the disconnect. what do you think texting and caller ID exist for? to all those silicon lovers, i bid you adieu
I mean, how long ago was that phased out, I've literally never had it happen to me since I can remember (going back to when I was a child in the mid 90s).
As a cashier and self checkout attendant, I’ll say that people do come with a full cart of groceries sometimes. I’ll just tell them before they even scan a single item, “it would be quicker through a register if you want”. It’s as simple as doing all of the work yourself versus having an experienced cashier and bagger do it. If you have like two items sure go ahead, otherwise go on register.
Where i live, there are (unfortunately) 2 stores where the staffed checkouts are closed during quieter times One is a smaller store (with 6 or 7 self checkouts, and only 1 or 2 staffed checkouts), one is a larger store with only 2 staffed checkouts, and i think 8 total self checkouts (4 normal size, and 4 which are designed for larger shops) And there is one store which i am certain reduced the number of staffed checkouts in favour of more self checkouts (they used to have a total of 5 large shop self checkouts i think, but they now have 10 large shop self checkouts)
It depends on the lines and employees. At the Kroger I grocery shop at, unless you have a BIG cart of items, the self-checkout is quicker and normally there is NO line. Unlike the regular checkouts.
if you have a couple of things that you are picking up the self checkout is the way to go but if you have a full cart full of stuff the cashier will be a better option that is just my opinion and from my experience
@@HallowqueenCrafting It was obviously his first time using a Self Checkout. He didn't even scan items correctly at first. If they repeated that he'd easily clear it within 1 or 2 minutes.
so now i am supposed to know all of the item codes when i walk up to a self checkout, even if i have to. that means i have to look at a rolodex of items, and do the math on how many carrots i have push the right code in, i don't understand why people want to take more jobs away from people, in a climate where jobs are becoming more and more scarce.
Self checkout is an introvert's dream come true Lol I love going in and out of the store without having to interact with a single person, it's wonderful.
As long as you have cashiers your prices won't come down. Unfortunately in a cash society cashiers still have a place. Now, in the future, where people start to go cashless, having purely self checkouts will be the way to go. And it's not rocket science. Just scan your items and pay with your card. How hard is that?
@@FrozenFireFreezingSteam So you have already fallen for the spin being used by banks. They want to do away with cheques so they can sack the staff who deal with them, then they will sack the cashiers because there will be no need for them if there is no such thing as cash. Finally they will charge YOU what they want to just for you to pay your bills -- using a bit of plastic only. You will all be ripped off if you let the banks get away with this, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
For now you mean but once too many cashiers are standing around with nothing to do they will be out of a job and YOU will do their job for them for FREE.
***** That's exactly the point man. Now you should even make your own food at a restaurant and pay THEM for doing it yourself!!! Why bother going in the first place? You'd rather waste the money at another place instead of just prepping and cleaning yourself? There's one born every minute...lol
Im surprised there was no line at the cashier's register. That's why she won. There is usually two registers open and a line of 4 people at least. It takes way longer.
luischav3z exactly! If there is an open line with a cashier, I’ll go there, but there usually are 2-3 people in line with dozens of items, so then I go to self-check.
@@Thingsyourollup most stores dont take cheques anymore and the ones that still do will make you jump through hoops to use it. I know the bay does not take cheques but will take it if you pay with their store credit card and pay it off instantly. If you don't have a card and want to pay with cheque, your only option is to sign up for a credit card subject to approval, then pay the card off instantly at the till. It's a trick cashiers use to boost their sign ups which Target cashiers don't seem to have figured out yet.
And people pressing elevator buttons themselves to ride elevator and people who need to stand themselves infront of the door to open the automatic door with noone came and open for them I also feel sorry for those people They're such a poor souls
This episode is SO skewed. Of course having a cashier will be faster when you buy a bunch of produce... Go buy some boxes of cereal and the self-checkout will win every time..
I thought the test was unfair as well. Not only were they complicated items, he clearly hadn't used the system for that type of item before. To honestly make a comparison, the test needed to be repeated a few times So he'd be given a chance to learn how to ring those items!
Her point is that it's an optional thing right now, that doesn't mean it will always be an optional thing though. Companies try to do stuff like this slowly so that there's less outrage from the customers when they go full automation.
it still be like that the diffrence between wal-mart and the rest self checkouts is that there also going to be cashier host were getting self checkouts 6 on one side 4 on the other side... you have two registers with 20 items or less than regluar machines and here the thing half the dman time customer don't want to want to an open lane its too far
***** So the future is low skill jobs going away which forces more people into unemployment while consumers are forced to do the job of those low skilled workers for no pay and certainly no discount. Basically the corporation just banks the savings they get from not having to hire as many people. Yes, the future you describe is "wonderful"
He isn't a person who does that kind of shopping frequently at that store. Whether or not I use a cashier, I know what each item costs before checking out because the same scanners with faulty price code data are used by both types.
that's so rude for that lady to go up to someone in self checkout.. tbh I like doing it myself because most of the time I hate talking to people anyways and a lot of the times its a lot faster than waiting in a cashier line.
I completely agree. I like doing the Self Checkout myself mainly because I don't like talking to people and because it goes by a lot quicker compared to what the Marketplace video claims. The guy that was using the Self Checkout in that video had no clue what he was doing with things that involved entering product codes so I thought their test was a bit invalid since they should've went with someone who was more used to using the Self Checkout.
Bonnie Banks some of us have reasons behind us not wanting to be sociable - how would you like it if you had a disability that you were constantly made fun of for of which went over for at least 4 years? Also how would you like it when things have happened in your life that have caused you to lose faith in people? I don't even ask people for help since I no longer trust people. People don't like being bullied for like half of their life no matter what the reasons are.
Maybe you hate talking to people because you didn't communicate enough when you were younger. I read about children being able to go into a store and pay for sweets without even communicating with anybody, and they were linking self-checkout machines with anxiety issues. Interesting, right?
Grandma Bonnie can chill with her “do you like working for Walmart for free” crusade. Every time I go to Walmart there’s 2 cashiers open and a line up of atleast 5 people. Sorry I don’t feel like waiting half an hour to pay for two items.
There's 2 cashiers and TWENTY to THIRTY cashier booths. Do you not see the problem here? It's not the cashiers. It's the lack of employees because walmart has outsourced customer service to the customer.
She's putting in her flight number. Of course the machine can't find her reservation. The itinerary on her phone clearly marks where the Reservation Code is. Don't conflate customer incompetence with poor technology design.
@@CanIgetsubswithnovideos-yk1fy trust me at one point customers are just plain dumb. Some people you can even have a human tell them exactly what to do and they won't do it....
I think that's why now most self checkouts at many airports are starting to ask full name, so you dont have to read the entire itinerary to find where the Reservation code is (even though everyone knows its usually at the very top). I was able to finish my self checkout for a Delta flight in 2 minutes, instead of waiting for 25 people to finish up who were at the regular checkout.
This is the first Marketplace that I don't agree with. This lady is calling millennials lazy, but it's the millennials who would prefer to do things ourselves. We don't want to have to deal with someone else doing what we can very well do on our own. And there are clearly cashiers at her Walmart. She's the lazy one, and she's essentially harassing people just going about their day.
I don't think millennial's are lazy, but I do think their preference of no contact shopping is making many jobs obsolete and hurting the economy. When people no longer have jobs who will be using self checkouts then?
@@carlam4986 Making jobs obsolete doesn't hurt the economy. If that were the case the world would have ended awhile ago. There are thousands of jobs that used to exist that no longer exist because of technological advancement yet we're still fine. What really hurts the economy is people not being able to get the training they need to continue working because school is too expensive to enroll in. Telling your kids not to go to school and to get a job that won't be around in 10 years is what hurts the economy.
@@carlam4986 Since when did minimal wage support a living? $12/hr=$1880/month=rent+cheap groceries+bills+basic stuff for kids+no money for anything else, no money to give kids decent education, and gets broke the second an emergency happens. Plus, in the good old days when self-checkout was nonexistent, stores never hired enough cashiers anyway, almost always having only two or three cashiers in a 10 lane store. The problem here is capitalism, not having self-checkouts.
Sample size of n=2 and a trolley of items including veggies for which you have to put a code in, just to prove a point.. Self-service checkouts are faster for most people, because most people who use them only have a basket full at most and don't want to wait around behind 4 people with full trolleys at the cashier. If they repeated the test with only 3 items each, all of which have bar codes and included the waiting time in the queue, then they would see a very different result.
Again we are back to consumers doing their duty. If you use self checkout, you have to be diligent in scanning or entering the correct codes and checking the prices as they show on the screen. If you go to the cashier, do not complain about the line and you should still check the prices on the register screen instead of being on your phone talking or tweeting.
If people have certain disabilities, I can see having a full service option. I remember once when my back went out on me 15 years ago being grateful for the one remaining gas station with an attendant who pumped. One less time to have to get out and in to the car in extreme pain before getting to the doctor. Mind you, all the other times I've been fine pumping my own gas.
It was at one time a common service in the US. It got cut because they didn't want to pay employees to pump, just like they don't want to pay cashier's at Wal-Mart
What she stated was when it first came out pumping your own gas was a few cents per gallon cheaper. But now it's not. Plus gas attended is a job that gone away another job cut
I love self checkout, I don't understand why there would be an attendant for a gas station- maybe that's because I grew up with it. Refilling your drink is just convenient, automated tickets are extremely convenient, assembling your furniture is a pain but then again, IT'S OPTIONAL! If you buy the cheap furniture, you assemble it yourself or you can go to a furniture store and buy high quality furniture pre-assembled for a much higher price. The benefits are there, you just have to look for them.
+Casper xMapop That's true, but think about it, having the machines creates jobs in the technology field. It's cheaper for businesses and that's one huge way to curb the rising costs on businesses without passing the costs on to the consumers. People need to realize that everyone incurs costs not just consumers- people tend to forget or ignore that.
the issue though now days its its all money not who gets what not about fair wages, but eliminating all costs and making the most profit, employment rates are going down and well this is the reason. Companies dont care about the employees. just he money
+Casper xMapop No, most companies care about the employees, sure there are plenty that don't, but most do. Laying people off is the last thing companies want to do, they do it because they have to.
Decades ago gas pumps were dangerous and required a trained person to pump the gas. We've all seen antique pumps with a glass filled top. Those were truly dangerous. Technology has made the pumps safe and it's better for the consumer if we don't have to wait in line to pay.
I use a checkout with staff. My groceries go along to the end and as they arrive I put them back in my trolley. Then pay and find a seat where I can pack exactly how I want in my own time. I have a rucksack for "heavy" stuff and the rest goes into two bags of equal weight - one in each hand. da daaaaa.
@@Living4YHWH ikr. I'm pretty sure cashiers would actually be appreciative if you help by packing your own bag. Where I live, self checkouts aren't a thing yet so we have cashiers and baggers. But at times when there's no baggers, you can help out by packing your own bags after the cashier has checked them out.
Not to mention not having your bread squished and eggs flattened. Or bounce sheets in with your chicken. Groceries are expensive enough without having them ruined before you even leave the store. I like packing my own groceries. I used to be a cashier, I always made sure to pack other people's purchases the same way that I would want mine packaged, but most cashiers don't do that. I also like having my freezer stuff bagged together, my fridge stuff bagged together, my cans bagged together, etc so that it is easier to put groceries away when I get home and cold and frozen items will stay cold and frozen longer. When I go through a cashier, I also put like items together on the belt and they still pack them all wonky.
I think it's because she lived in the 60s, when the gas was indeed pumped for you, so I guess she's trying to preserve the romanticised image of those times and isn't ready accept technology.
In Coquitlam BC you don't pump your own gas, all stations are full serve stations thanks to a city bylaw. I actually prefer it this way. Means I don't need to get out of the car leaving my daughter in there.
+Alsy Technology has nothing to do with it. Its the same tech. What she said was correct. They used to have people do it and then it was discounted if you go to a self serve and they took it away. Companies do this all the time

Zachare Sylvestre what happens when you have a section of society not intellectually capable of performing more complex jobs, and you reduce the number of jobs they are capable of working? How many people in a society have an IQ less than 80? That portion of society is higher than you would think.

Believe me, I was a cashier for years. Often times grocery stores make their cashiers scan a certain amount of "items per minute". This in turn forces the cashier to go as fast as they can, in order to keep up with what is being demanded of them. Which means, they bag however they want, whichever is easiest, and fastest. I had raises kept from me, just because I didn't work as fast as everyone else. But, I also had customers specifically come to my register, because they liked how I bagged their groceries. So I do understand your point about how your groceries are bagged. My attitude was always that, the customers are paying good money, they shouldn't have their items destroyed because of some lousy bagging. Just know that if the cashier seems to be going very quickly, it's probably because she/he is being pressured to do so by management...
Little tip: after you scan an item, press the button that says "Skip bagging". I do all the time, and never have the self checkout thing saying "Please wait for an attendant."
as a self-checkout attendant, that is wrong. do not press skip bagging unless it's a big object. with the NCR machines, they ask for assistance after you press skip bagging 4 times.
I love self service, if I could fly the airplane myself I'd do it. Also this report is very biased and has a wrong perspective on it. It's not so much about more profits as it is about company survival and competitivity. If my competitor is using technology to lower operating costs well he may put me out of business, so I have to get on board. Also If costs go down, prices for consumer will probably go down, it's not like the company just gets a bigger margin, it needs to stay competitive. So you see for a company it is mostly a necessity to implement these things, not so much an "evil scheme to put you to work" as is portrayed in this video.
Mateo San "prices for consumer will probably go down" bro, why tf would they lower cost of service just to pass on savings to consumer? Nah, screw that, they're increasing their profits.
I agree on the self service TO A POINT. Flying the plane, dangerous/complex things, and cooking my food at the restaurant though (for example), I'm happy to have someone else do it. Oh, and dental procedures...
i agree, the UPC is the same across the board, meaning the overcharge would have been done through a cashier aswell. ALSO you wouldn't be able to see the overcharge if you went through a cashier until you get the bill.
Which wouldn't happen if a cashier were to do it. This could happen to anyone. For me, overpaying is not so much but it gets scanned twice and I have to wait for the assistance... And sometimes it just calls for assistance.
If I'm just getting a few things I don't mind the self-checkout. But if I'm getting a week's worth of groceries, I prefer the cashier. That's why I like stores that have both
@@thegoat164 Price should drop universally for all businesses using any form of selfcheck as a means of cutting physical employees. I don't know about you guys, but over here in sweden, the self-checkout solution in supermarkets is really awesome and way more efficient than those shown in the video. Instead of standing there afterward and scanning each product like a cashier, you scan your products and put them in your bag as you go through the store with a handheld scanner registered to your customer ID. Then at the end, you pay and you go without ever having to stand in line and wait. The difference, of course, is that you have to be a registered customer.
Erratic & Static If you're on this lady's mindset, now you're only not being paid to be a cashier, you also have to pay for the store's checkout machine. Nice.
Bonnie is the type of person who will complain on anything and everything. Someone who you do not want to be in front of you at the checkout line. Good thing there's self checkouts to avoid her ^_^
Funny, I worked as a cashier and I hate those self check- outs. They are no where near user friendly. I refuse to use them because they do aim to put good people out of proper jobs.
Cindy Rose De Lumban I spend $12,000 a year grocery shopping, I am not going to do "self checkout" they are there to SERVE ME. I am also giving some H.S. kid, housewife or handicapped person A Job by demanding a real person to Serve Me! I don't pump my own gas either!!! These jobs are essential for people to have as their first job, second job, etc.
Many self service areas are not that hard to use in my experience. If I'm using a new machine, I just take the time to read instructions. Which many people don't like doing....
Have you noticed any changes now? I see longer lines, a cart full of items nowadays. Walmart has an awful wait time. I once had to wait in my car for more than an hour for my friend who had to buy 1 thing. I was annoyed assuming that she was in the checkout area but she said she was in the self checkout line. Bagging under 10 items is ok but for more than 10 items, it becomes an annoying chore.
Walmart is always working really short staffed on evenings shift. with Only one Cashier from like 7pm to 11:pm. Prices on the shelves say one price, and then when they get up to the cashier . Cashier scans items and the item cost 2 X more than the shelf price.
I love scanning my own groceries because I get in and out of the store much faster and I don't have to worry about some cashier trying to ruin my day...
I am wondering which store did they go, I use self serve checkout in Walmart every time and it works perfectly fun. I can’t stop using it, it saves 10+min when there is a long line up in cashier checkouts
Looks like they went to Superstore/Loblaws. I see a big pc sign. And it's clear the guy randomly put in a random code instead of using the search button.
Keith French i really think it’s a company by company basis. the store i personally work at didn’t have self checkout when i started a year ago, and it does now, in fact i was actually trained on it. before we got it, i actually had many complains by the many different customers as to why we didn’t have them. also, i promise the self checkout at least for my employer hasn’t dismissed jobs. in fact they still very much need attending. i’d love to talk open- mindedly with you on the subject if you have any questions. :)
There are long lines at the normal check outs because they replaced them with self check outs. Less cashiers= more incentives to use the self checkout .
For many introverts, self-checkouts are more of a non-social alternate option for them. It comes down with what is most comfortable for them. As for some other people, it’s not so much the problem of getting an adrenaline rush from interacting with strangers but more so in regards to privacy. With self-checkouts, a shopper can go through that process without having to be self-conscious about what they’re buying. I feel like even if they are fully aware that self-checkouts can take longer, they would most likely still continue to use that option.
What this segment conveniently omits are the long lines at the cashier. This was a dishonest experiment because they compared checkout times as if they were apples to apples. The cashier lines are almost always backlogged with shoppers and there's always that old lady with 100 coupons and obscure items that need to be price checked. Going through self-checkout is a breeze with no lines as long as you don't have a huge load and most of your items have a barcode.
What they really should have done is timed ONLY the checkout process. Lines are an uncontrollable variable, you need to remove those from a study to get accurate results.
We have here (in Sweden) a different type of self-checkout, you carry a scanner, which you get at the entrance with a card, and scan each item as you pick it. When you arrive at the payment station you put back the scanner, use the same card in the machine, and pay. No more time wasted trying to scan and putting the item on the table afterwards (which never works when I tried it out), all my purchase is already in my shopping bags...
+Richard Feinburg Ive seen people use the express checkout when they have to fully loaded carts with enough food to feed 40 for a month that keep adding stuff when they think of something they forgot and it takes 25 minutes for them to clear the checkout
Well you could just ask for no ice, but I almost always forget to ask unless I'm pouring my own drink. All that ice is a rip-off and it waters down your drink, especially when the drinks are already kept cool.
What I have found in a lot of places is they have a button to push based on the size of the drink and if you ask for no ice you may receive a 1/2 empty cup, the same amount of drink you would have gotten just no ice.
My dad is almost 70 y.o.. He tells me how he prefer to have someone gas for him (i think he just isn't comfortable doing it himself because of possible risks, and i don't blame him, but he still does it himself) However, if he finds a gasstation with pumping service, he's gonna go to the right pumps. they are rare (i only know of one in my province (Québec)) I simply assume it was way more common when he was in his late teens/20s in the 1970s
the only place i remember getting gas pumped for you was some gas stations in nairobi but theres someone who has a job doing literally anything there 😭
We have been in Canada too (where this show is from). There is still the odd gas station that offers full serve but it's not common. You also pay more per liter to have someone pump it for you.
I never think of myself doing a company's job when I'm doing self-service/checkout. As a person who have difficulties in starting small conversation. This self service thing is like a God Sent.
All I do is answer their questions, and put my things on convaorbelt, and pay, thats all. I don't think the cashiers even cares about small talk. Sometimes if there isn't a bagger, i help put my groceries in the bags
The local H-E-B grocery here, we can weigh and print a label for produce, bulk items, etc. I am at self checkout for less than 2 minutes. One of the stores has 15 self checkout stations.
That lady is just lazy, pumping gas isn't hard. Neither is scanning your own groceries. You have the option to pay more for someone to pump your gas and you also have a choice to go through the register line
I know right time is not exactly the greatest feature of self checkouts besides once you got experience with it, it will go faster.ni always see new people having difficulties while I get through it fast.
Well, here (The Netherlands) self service is always optional. You may use it however if you can't figure it out you could just stand in line and waste your time.
I love self checkout b/c I don't need no one judging me on the stuff I'm buying...so what if I'm buying a tarp, a hand saw, a dozen gallon of bleach, gloves, extra absorbent tissues, and a book on how to get away with murder ...you don't know me!!!
Until you buy some nasty tasting Doritos, and set it on the damn self-checkout thing and have to set it on the tray to be weighed and the bag of chips are not heavy enough for the machine to detect it, so you push on it, and have to redo everything thing or wait for an attendant that's helping others. Yeah I love these things...
not sure what self checkouts you have, but especially here in Vancouver, they come up with errors all the time, go out of service, and just flat break.
Why does this episode exist? I'm not even three minutes into this and I've already had enough time to think and realize that having both in the store is a massive benefit to everyone. It provides privacy to buyers and helps to divide those buying mass amounts from those buying small amounts, shortening lines and promoting a more positive attitude for both consumer and cashier. The idea that majort retailers would use this to replace standard checkout is ridiculous. What happens when an older lady wants to purchase large or heavy items? Personally, I love using self checkout and even when I don't use it, the fact that it's there is still a benefit to me. This episode is just a bottom of the bucket idea. Also, it's worth noting that service you receive without paying and could perform yourself is in it's very nature a privilege. Nobody is required to provide such things for you, so to piggyback on traditional expectations like they entitle you to your own white gloved gas pumping produce bagger is a despicable way to act. It proposes the idea that it's okay to mistreat those who deal with customers on a daily basis and that it's unfair to be asked to contribute to the efficiency of your economy.
Cash3194, self checkout lanes have that option of donating to something as well. Never ever do it. You can't write it off as a tax deductible donation and the companies wait until they reach a big number like a million and then donate the money, and then getting a tax deductible from it. Therefore, you are giving a corporation money to donate so they can make money from asking you an empathetic question.
Terrance Chu Don't let the media get to you. Having to scan your own groceries really isn't a big deal. I've been using those machines ever since they were first put into place. It's faster (usually shorter lines) and I don't have to deal with miserable cashiers.
you are not forced to donate, you donate if you want, jsut say no.. did oyu know cashiers get extra money and prizes if they reach a quota of donations? where i work i can get up to 350$ with indications and donations if i reach a certain quota......... no one is forced to donate.
As an Autistic I prefer self-service. Human interaction is nerve-wrecking and extraordinary draining. I don't like people. The only exception I would make is to have a person to help with disability issues. For example, when subjected to loud noise, I suffer cognitive failure and lose ability for object recognition. After that, all items on the shelves start looking the same as oblong rectangles with same color oscillating from light gray to light yellow. I have Class 3 ASD. If there is no loud music no loud yelling and no horrible inconsiderate people talking on speaker phones at the store, I am doing just fine and do not require any assistance at all.
+waverley carr My parents literally used a self checkout for the first time and we accidentally left a roasted chicken at the Super Store as we were leaving and my parents got into a huge fight over it. My mom drove off into the night and I was so scared they would be getting a divorce. But luckily they both calmed down and worked it out and we called Super Store up to get our chicken. As +kanasfarmwife1 said, it's okay if it's a few, but a whole family can be very tiring and cause more problems than using a trained cashier.
ikr... like you already did all the work picking up the goods from the shelf or wherever and put it into your cart, what is it to scan it yourself? at least you're sure you're handling the way you want to handle it, lowering the risk of damaging the item you purchased... but then again... it could cause problems for potential job loss...

That's a little early. Mid to late 70s would be more accurate. Self-pumps only showed up in my Massachusetts city in 1976, the year before I graduated from high school. That was one pump in the county. When we moved to the midwest 2 years later, nobody had self-pump. Easily by 1982, it was self pump at most gas stations.
Yeh... totally fair test... go look up a buggy selfchecout, get a guy who clearly doesn't know how that system work and how to check stuff before paying (I'm sure it would have been easy to remove and scan again to correct it), get items without a bar code so the selfchecout is both harder and takes more time, go at a time where the line to a cashier is short or non existent... just so your point will come across... test this at IKEA and the outcome would be that the selfchecout is much faster
Whenever I see an option to do something myself using a computer, I pick that option. I hate having to coach another human being through doing something so blanking simple I could just do it myself if they let me. I'd much rather check myself out than go to a cashier because while most cashiers are wonderful people, there are a few who are just disgusting. I can't count the number of times I've seen a cashier wipe their nose, sneeze/cough into their hands, and then touch my items or the money they're handing me, etc. On top of that, they don't see a need to bag things properly, at times outright breaking items because it's fun to throw eggs in sideways in a bag with the flour. This lady not liking to pump her gas is ridiculous as well. My car is a diesel, I'd MUCH rather pump my own diesel, then have an attendant put gas in my car and then it somehow be my fault. Even if I drove a gas car, I'd rather be responsible for my car's care like that, than to trust some random stranger to pump gas the way I want it. What if I only want to put a gallon in, what if I wanted to clean the trash out while pumping gas, or wash my windshields. I like having the control doing it myself provides. A mcdonald's up the road has self-order stations and it's fantastic. You can pick exactly which burger you want, put exactly what you want on it, make it a meal or don't, get exactly everything you want and not sit there arguing with a cashier who says "now, which number?" "2." "what size again?" "medium, and no pickles." "okay, a number three with no onions." "No, number 2, I want the onions I don't want the pickles."
To be honest, I agree with that, I'm just not a people person at all so I prefer the self option, and I mean really that's all just a little bit of manual labor, I mean I'm pretty lazy but not THAT lazy, though I mean if you are, it's illegal to pump your own gas in New Jersey, so there's an option
It's about the convenience. Some may be handicapped or older or incapable. Also as you saw, those machines hardly run well. It's about a face to face interaction. I can't tell you how many times I've left a store feeling happy because the cashier and I had a good conversation. You don't get that human company with a machine. Machines malfunction, humans don't. Plus that stuff is foreign to older generations. Like trying to teach your grandmother what an apple cloud is. I think the consumer should have a choice at minimum, but I really don't want anything self service. It also wrecks economies. The only people that benefit are the top. You don't save money self servicing. We need to keep low level workers in jobs. They don't have professional skills, but like anyone else they need work too. It is an awful idea. We will have more uneducated people on government aid and those that go to college will compete with professionals and overall lower salaries of professional positions. If clerks became doctors, doctors wouldn't be worth as much because there's so many damn doctors. Eliminating the service industry will create more poor and lower the salaries of normal people like us. The only benefit it has is occasionally quicker shopping trips and saves companies ridiculous amounts of money
i always ask if like an item idf they want it another bag or not... i also if i sneez i get the paper towels under the counter i have... but your also touching money and a wallet purse you don't wash... coughing is normal and i was disturbed how many customers were freely coughing not covering there mouth.
You're falsely conflating a mcdonalds self order station with a supermarket checkout. At mcdonalds it's a consumer benefit due to human error and your ability to see all menu options at any given time. At the supermarket, self checkout is extremely tedious due to computer error when you have more than a few items. If self checkout was more convenient for the consumer, then more people would adopt it.
Jordan Frary If the cashier machine is malfunctioning, that human cashier likely will be unable to do their job either. Also, that human cashier can be on strike, or sick, or they may have a sudden outrage in the middle of their job, so yes, human can malfunction as well.
+harry hh Or they should mandate that self-service terminals give the customers a discount equal to minimum wage times the time they spent using the thing. Getting $4 off for spending 15 minutes checking out your own stuff would probably improve popularity of the self-service terminals.
Yes because you grew up doing that. Until they make you do something else to cut costs that you then might mind. Companies aren't cutting prices at the same rate as they're cutting costs.
I prefer to pump petrol, top up the radiator water, check and top up the motor oil and pump the tires myself but I have no issue with anyone who prefers an attendant performs these tasks for them for whatever reason. I also prefer to use self-service banking machines, unless they do not work well due to poor maintenance. However, I limit my Internet banking as much as possible due to exposure to online security risk. Whatever Internet security I may have installed on my computer is just as good in protecting my login and password as a condom is as good at protecting one from contracting a sexually transmitted disease, especially if the condom bursts, whilst in action, both one and one's partner are exposed, especially if one of the parties is promiscuous. Well, the Internet is a rather promiscuous place..
Not gonna lie, I'm between two ferns. I work as a cashier at target, but when I'm done and I go to buy something, I usually use self-check outs. Although it's annoying when it's quite in store, because usually people will use the self checkouts.
I love self-service. Faster and less human contact. When you use a cashier at Walmart they want to chit chat and 99% of the time it's jibberious and wastes time.
Wouldn't want to take away the time that you yourself invested in coming into the store. If you are in that big of a hurry clearly it's not the Time to be walking into a store and trying to purchase items in a reasonable timeframe. Slow down you don't have to do everything by tomorrow. Zoom zoom life equals lonely and wondering why you moved so fast later in life.
Being a self-service kiosk provider in the Middle-east, we are fully aware of this scenario. We provide fully automated and highly convenient self-ordering kiosks for restaurants, groceries and retail outlets that work on a "grab and go" basis. The customer needs to place the item on the kiosk weighing scale, and wait for few seconds. The AI camera of the kiosk detects the item and issues the bill. This avoids the barcode confusion.
You're not going to get me to not choose self service. I'll watch a TH-cam video right there to figure out the machine before I choose to go to an actual person. It's an introvert thing. I'll work for free for that brief time, get employee of the month, AND help stock a little if it means I avoid people.
I don’t see that as free work. I’m not working really if I check my groceries out myself or check myself in for my flight. I do it faster than most cashiers or employees.getting my own gas is also better for me. I do it faster and I don’t have to wait for an employee to finish with another car and I can stop pumping gas whenever I feel like. It isn’t free work. I like having the freedom to do some things myself
Exactly! That's what I'm always trying to teach these customers @ my grocery store but they feel all threatened when I'm just trying to help them....or they can't spare "15 super valuable seconds of their day" for me to explain how it functions and how they can avoid the issue in the future. We live in a world where we want things "right here, right now at this moment" and that's silly because technology isn't that awesome yet. People like that should just resort to hiring a genie that grants their every wish.
I love self checkout. It's super convenient and best of all, I don't have to deal with a person. I like people but I am an introvert so I would rather not deal with the anxiety.
what a terrible situational example... who in the right mind goes to a self checkout with a cart full of stuff and expect to get out faster vs a cashier? ( I know some people still do for reasons i have no idea about ) also. the lady didnt have to wait 10 minutes in line like most big supermarkets now because of under staff/ untrained staff.. really disappointed with this one, love the other market-watch videos though
our local grocery has practically only self-check, just one or two real cashiers even at peak time. so even with a giant cartload, you have no choice but to use self-check
I don't get it either even if I'm at a cafe there the staff will collect your plates I'll often take my plates back to the hatch because its just not hard same for bars I'll drop my glass off before I leave only place I don't do this is resturaunts simply because they do it for me before I even get up to leave but they get the biggest thankyou I can give them
This is pretty difficult for me. I always have preferred self checkouts because I understand the machines very well. I worked at Walmart for just over 3 years as a cashier and hated going through lines because everybody my age hated that they’d be standing for so long because of the long lines so I didn’t want to further inflict that mind numbing cycle onto them. Older folk who had that as their main occupation tended to love busy days because the day would go by faster, and enjoyed the socialization, which I understand. I quit after breaking my foot off duty when the folks in the personnel office refused to let me go back to work with restrictions, which I refused because I didn’t want to rebreak my foot and need surgery. I noticed after I quit, half of the cashier staff either quit or was fired and replaced with more self checkouts, some even having conveyer belts, and a new gigantic machine to help with online orders. Glad I got out when I did. I’m certain I would’ve kept my job because I was dedicated and took anybody’s shift, but working at a place that makes you feel so easily replaceable was not fun. Plus, everyone gives cashiers attitude during busy hours and around fund raising time. It was constantly draining. Not a good place for someone already drained or unhappy.
I avoid them at Walmart as well. On the other hand some machines I use are really good and become 2nd nature quickly. The best machines I use are at BJ's. I guess it all depends on the store
I like the option. If I have 2 items, I'm not stuck behind granny with 500 items and 50 coupons. It is a bit inconvenient if I have a lot to checkout, but not really that big of a deal. The guy shopper must be completely new to self checkout, since he didn't know produce needs to be weighed. That's the only thing that cost him 4x the time.
Kenneth Davis no it's not! it's based on the weight of the item you place in the "bagging area"... If you have an awkwardly shaped item and don't place it down correctly, the system can go haywire A lot of people do not understand the concept of gravity
No, it's a system of trust. The weighing system goes haywire anyway, the employees just override it all the time. High crime areas they take out the self checkout lines for this very reason.
its a system based on trust your just not seeing the flaw in the system the system checks for 2 events a item scanned and the coresponding weight that apears in the bagging area a item not scanned and the weight in the bagging area changed say you scan through your grocerys placing them in the bagging area but then you wave through a item you intend not to pay for without letting it scan and dont place it in the bagging area then quickly race through to the checkout proccess you pay and off you go the system never got the stolen item scanned so never checked for its weight you never bagged it so it never registered over weight in the bagging area the TRUST is similar to what they call security theater in tsa checkpoints when most security clerks see you enter into the checkout zone they usually pay less atention to you when they see every item go past the scan head they assume you scanned every item and not that you pretended to do so they trust that you did theese things you paid for theese things and that if they stopped you youd most likley have evidence
Absolutely! You can take the most expensive tomatoes and punch in the code for the cheapest ones and so on with all the produce.. even organic one. And there's other ways Im sure. If a person is quick enough but doesnt act weird or make any mistakes he will not get caugh.
Faster for me, cheaper for them, and I don't even have to talk to people. It's so perfect.
+akba666 sign of anti-social.
R torontonion I went to buy groceries, not socialize.
+akba666 EXACTLY!!! That's the beauty of self checkout. If I wanted to socialize, I'd go to a pub or something
+akba666 But that's the whole issue isn't it? People these days are burrowed neck deep in their phones. I'm fairly sure you could pick their pockets and paint them orange and they'd be none the wiser till they arrived at their destination. How do you guys not feel disconnected with the world??
+Elistae you are a human. this is why you feel the disconnect. people like the ones you question make me question if they are indeed human. if they are, my bet is they are medicated with anti reps or something.
it's increasingly common to see this reaction toward embracing the disconnect. what do you think texting and caller ID exist for?

pumping gas? I have NEVER had someone else pump my gas. all you have to do is put it in and stand there... I don't see whats so hard about it
The old women doesnt even put down the locking pin. I wonder if she even knows it exists
I mean, how long ago was that phased out, I've literally never had it happen to me since I can remember (going back to when I was a child in the mid 90s).
My dad used to do it when he was in high school so it ended in late 70's early 80's ish
Just some people are not use of the self service. theres your answer
Well it is Canada they probably get a lot colder than we do over here while pumping
Where i live, there are (unfortunately) 2 stores where the staffed checkouts are closed during quieter times
One is a smaller store (with 6 or 7 self checkouts, and only 1 or 2 staffed checkouts), one is a larger store with only 2 staffed checkouts, and i think 8 total self checkouts (4 normal size, and 4 which are designed for larger shops)
And there is one store which i am certain reduced the number of staffed checkouts in favour of more self checkouts (they used to have a total of 5 large shop self checkouts i think, but they now have 10 large shop self checkouts)
It depends on the lines and employees. At the Kroger I grocery shop at, unless you have a BIG cart of items, the self-checkout is quicker and normally there is NO line. Unlike the regular checkouts.
if you have a couple of things that you are picking up the self checkout is the way to go but if you have a full cart full of stuff the cashier will be a better option that is just my opinion and from my experience
yup agreed
my thoughts exactely
Yes exactly
most self register will have a certin limit you can do 20 with walmart 10 with all other compaines pretty much
Just to clear up a misconception, the scanning at our scan and go registers at any Walmart do not have an item limit, you can scan any number of items.
Wait, so Cody spent over twice as much by using the self-checkout? ... Yeah, that's nothing to do with the machine. He made a clear error there.
an error that a cashier would be unlikely to make, thus the comparision.
William Steven It was the attendant that punched in the wrong code
Your everywhere
I never used a self checkout takes jobs away

Luckily some supermarkets have both. Cashiers and self checkouts. It's easier to have both options.
Lugia, The Beast Of The Sea or all supermarkets in the uk.
Some ---> All
As long as you have cashiers your prices won't come down.

This episode is SO skewed. Of course having a cashier will be faster when you buy a bunch of produce...
Go buy some boxes of cereal and the self-checkout will win every time..
+DeutschMatheLehrer That's the sort of view I have. If you can carry it yourself, check it out yourself.
I thought the test was unfair as well. Not only were they complicated items, he clearly hadn't used the system for that type of item before.
To honestly make a comparison, the test needed to be repeated a few times So he'd be given a chance to learn how to ring those items!
So you can all do the work for free
Marketplace has a tendency to skew episodes or else the show would be boring...
if it was just cereal the cashier could still do it faster.
Does that lady know you don't have to use the self checkout at Walmart? its like an optional thing?
Did you not watch the video?
Her point is that it's an optional thing right now, that doesn't mean it will always be an optional thing though. Companies try to do stuff like this slowly so that there's less outrage from the customers when they go full automation.
it still be like that the diffrence between wal-mart and the rest self checkouts is that there also going to be cashier host were getting self checkouts 6 on one side 4 on the other side... you have two registers with 20 items or less than regluar machines and here the thing half the dman time customer don't want to want to an open lane its too far

How the hell did this guy not notice that $70 Brussel Sprout charge??
With all these comments about not liking to talk to people there are going to be a lot of lonely people. Being cut off from society is not healthy.
+Bonnie Banks some don't of us don't like communicating with strangers and we still have friends and family
Sometimes introverts like me don’t want to deal with employees at a store 😹😨

I THINK YOUR A ANTI-SOCIAL
Grandma Bonnie can chill with her “do you like working for Walmart for free” crusade. Every time I go to Walmart there’s 2 cashiers open and a line up of atleast 5 people. Sorry I don’t feel like waiting half an hour to pay for two items.
Thats On Purpose Slow And Dumb Too
You get it 👍
Exactly!!!!
There's 2 cashiers and TWENTY to THIRTY cashier booths. Do you not see the problem here? It's not the cashiers. It's the lack of employees because walmart has outsourced customer service to the customer.
You pay either way. The cost of hiring cashiers is passed to customers.
She's putting in her flight number. Of course the machine can't find her reservation. The itinerary on her phone clearly marks where the Reservation Code is. Don't conflate customer incompetence with poor technology design.
When you get it wrong it should explain where it is... good design takes responsibility for user incompetence. Any UI/UX engineer would agree.
@@CanIgetsubswithnovideos-yk1fy trust me at one point customers are just plain dumb. Some people you can even have a human tell them exactly what to do and they won't do it....
Do you expect every passenger can navigate through easily? It is not as easy as you may think.

@@AlphineWolf exactly. Produce is so easy in self checkout
@@jonathanpayne5588 me thinking why are people so dumb lol.
Are these people really complaining about pumping their own gas into their own car??!!! The laziness is real with this one 😂
It got cut because they didn't want to pay employees to pump, just like they don't want to pay cashier's at Wal-Mart
not lazy as pumping gas is no ticket to health with all the chemicals. No thanks, I like to deal with humans and not machines.
What she stated was when it first came out pumping your own gas was a few cents per gallon cheaper. But now it's not. Plus gas attended is a job that gone away another job cut
well technically it's not your product until it is paid for. so why should i have to pump their product.
I dont have it but oregon does, it helps provide jobs

+Ted Soto absolutely correct
+Dairys Moreta I know right? Don't know why we do that
I prefer self checkouts to be honest. I rarely ever have to wait in line and I can pack my bags my way.
I use a checkout with staff. My groceries go along to the end and as they arrive I put them back in my trolley. Then pay and find a seat where I can pack exactly how I want in my own time. I have a rucksack for "heavy" stuff and the rest goes into two bags of equal weight - one in each hand. da daaaaa.
Where can you not bag your own goods at the cashier?
@@Living4YHWH ikr. I'm pretty sure cashiers would actually be appreciative if you help by packing your own bag. Where I live, self checkouts aren't a thing yet so we have cashiers and baggers. But at times when there's no baggers, you can help out by packing your own bags after the cashier has checked them out.
If self checkout allows for me to avoid interacting with another human then I will always pick it

In India, the gas station employees only must handle the equipment due to safety concern.
Having our gas pumped used to be the norm. Consumers are doing the work for corporations.

I love how inconvenienced she was. "Gosh I have to stand here, press a button and hold a trigger."

I prefer self service, really. I like having more control over how I pack my bags, and how I pour my drinks. For me , it is all about control.
Amen! Im always screaming in my head, 'Dont put the damn bread in first you muppet'
Self checkout is a blessing and a curse
Same i hate it when they put 3 small items in one bag, then add to the fact they do that with the rest of the cart it takes forever.
Until your bread is flattened and your eggs are smashed, I guess the only person to blame is you!
but if you make mistake.. it beconme your fault...

I don't know about you guys, but over here in sweden, the self-checkout solution in supermarkets is really awesome and way more efficient than those shown in the video.

Typically you are right but I have actually had to wait in line at the self checkout at my grocery store.
🤔 "that old lady" ⚠️
And if your like here 10 or so aisles but only 1 open at best with a large line.
The self-checkout having a small-medium sized line
What they really should have done is timed ONLY the checkout process. Lines are an uncontrollable variable, you need to remove those from a study to get accurate results.
Yes but you also have to figure that once everything is self checkout your gonna have to wait in line for those
Oh no pumping your own gas? This has only been happening for decades in America.....
And, they say young people are lazy.....
I guess you have never been to NJ or Oregon they still have full service stations
I hate when people use the Express Lane (10 items or less) when they have a full shopping cart of products!
+Richard Feinburg Ive seen people use the express checkout when they have to fully loaded carts with enough food to feed 40 for a month that keep adding stuff when they think of something they forgot and it takes 25 minutes for them to clear the checkout
Some customers are just rude. Where there are clear signs with an amount, most people follow the guidelines. (A couple extra items is no big deal).
I like getting my own soda because the workers like putting a bunch of ice, and my drink is done real fast
Well you could just ask for no ice, but I almost always forget to ask unless I'm pouring my own drink. All that ice is a rip-off and it waters down your drink, especially when the drinks are already kept cool.
***** I've never heard that, I guess not where I live.
If a place refuses to give me no ice after I ask,....I would walk out and never go back
What I have found in a lot of places is they have a button to push based on the size of the drink and if you ask for no ice you may receive a 1/2 empty cup, the same amount of drink you would have gotten just no ice.

You rather risk bugs errors and theft over saying "no thank you"?
Cash3194, self checkout lanes have that option of donating to something as well. Never ever do it. You can't write it off as a tax deductible donation and the companies wait until they reach a big number like a million and then donate the money, and then getting a tax deductible from it. Therefore, you are giving a corporation money to donate so they can make money from asking you an empathetic question.

Yep. CBC sadly proves in many of their episodes that they are not investigating but only pushing narative they choose beforehand.
What if I only want to put a gallon in, what if I wanted to clean the trash out while pumping gas, or wash my windshields. I like having the control doing it myself provides.

This Marketplace travel budget is *chefs kiss*
Its like Dateline meets Conan Without Borders. They are ALWAYS flying everywhere.
when you drive your car do you then say ' I'm doing a taxis job', this episode is pointless...... i should get paid for watching this video
+harry hh Or they should mandate that self-service terminals give the customers a discount equal to minimum wage times the time they spent using the thing. Getting $4 off for spending 15 minutes checking out your own stuff would probably improve popularity of the self-service terminals.
In Britain we always pump our own PETROL. What's the problem?
Yes because you grew up doing that. Until they make you do something else to cut costs that you then might mind. Companies aren't cutting prices at the same rate as they're cutting costs.

George Carter Productions - some people hate doing it. I don't mind doing it, though.
George Carter Productions where I live in the U.S we pump our own gas. it's not all of the u.s I think it's a state by state deal
Cashiers is the way to go. Keep people in jobs. I am weary of corporations getting consumers to do their work.
If you hate human contact, you must be miserable.
Brutus Tan exactly
Being a self-service kiosk provider in the Middle-east, we are fully aware of this scenario. We provide fully automated and highly convenient self-ordering kiosks for restaurants, groceries and retail outlets that work on a "grab and go" basis. The customer needs to place the item on the kiosk weighing scale, and wait for few seconds. The AI camera of the kiosk detects the item and issues the bill. This avoids the barcode confusion.
I love all the free stuff I can pick up through self checkout
Birthday cards are good and also "stackables" i.e. buy one, get 4-5-6 free....
What else? Lol
Ur preaching to the choir i always factor in MY time.
airline kiosks are the best. they're always so simple to use and there's rarely a line (/"queue")
You're not going to get me to not choose self service. I'll watch a TH-cam video right there to figure out the machine before I choose to go to an actual person. It's an introvert thing. I'll work for free for that brief time, get employee of the month, AND help stock a little if it means I avoid people.
need shrink appointment
TINY and ME No that is an introvert. Probably a bit of social anxiety too.
But i m very slow..and i m still young. So i support cashier
That self checkout malfunction was just bad timing. Self checkouts are fantastic and work 95% of the time.
Less contact with people so I say that's a win 😂😂
Not in the long run. You get worse anxiety problems and cashiers will lose their jobs.
you can go to DMV wait for a half day or go to Safeway DMV machine for just 30 sec to pay your registration.
Self checkout is good for small purchases like for a candy bag or a pepsi if you have a creditcard.
what a terrible situational example... who in the right mind goes to a self checkout with a cart full of stuff and expect to get out faster vs a cashier? ( I know some people still do for reasons i have no idea about ) also. the lady didnt have to wait 10 minutes in line like most big supermarkets now because of under staff/ untrained staff..
really disappointed with this one, love the other market-watch videos though
when there is only self checkouts and no people then it might dawn on you and less cashiers are because you are working for the company for FREE
our local grocery has practically only self-check, just one or two real cashiers even at peak time. so even with a giant cartload, you have no choice but to use self-check
that lady is lazy whats wrong with cleaning up your self
The problem is cleaning other garbage but cleaning stuff your self i should be getting paid
I don't get it either even if I'm at a cafe there the staff will collect your plates I'll often take my plates back to the hatch because its just not hard same for bars I'll drop my glass off before I leave only place I don't do this is resturaunts simply because they do it for me before I even get up to leave but they get the biggest thankyou I can give them
Lol sanitation engineer sounds so fancy
Not a good place for someone already drained or unhappy.
it's not quicker if machine stops scanning and says "please wait for assistance" I get this at WalMart all the time...
I avoid them at Walmart as well. On the other hand some machines I use are really good and become 2nd nature quickly. The best machines I use are at BJ's. I guess it all depends on the store
The avoid Walmart.
And the modern machines clearly spell it out for each item. Whether it's weigh it, count it, find it (like produce), etc.
Self checkout is also a system based on trust.
Kenneth Davis no it's not! it's based on the weight of the item you place in the "bagging area"... If you have an awkwardly shaped item and don't place it down correctly, the system can go haywire
A lot of people do not understand the concept of gravity
No, it's a system of trust. The weighing system goes haywire anyway, the employees just override it all the time. High crime areas they take out the self checkout lines for this very reason.
its a system based on trust your just not seeing the flaw in the system
the system checks for 2 events
a item scanned and the coresponding weight that apears in the bagging area
a item not scanned and the weight in the bagging area changed
say you scan through your grocerys placing them in the bagging area but then you wave through a item you intend not to pay for without letting it scan and dont place it in the bagging area then quickly race through to the checkout proccess you pay and off you go the system never got the stolen item scanned so never checked for its weight you never bagged it so it never registered over weight in the bagging area
the TRUST is similar to what they call security theater in tsa checkpoints
when most security clerks see you enter into the checkout zone they usually pay less atention to you when they see every item go past the scan head they assume you scanned every item and not that you pretended to do so
they trust that you did theese things you paid for theese things and that if they stopped you youd most likley have evidence
Absolutely! You can take the most expensive tomatoes and punch in the code for the cheapest ones and so on with all the produce.. even organic one. And there's other ways Im sure. If a person is quick enough but doesnt act weird or make any mistakes he will not get caugh.
