What to know about tipping at self-checkouts

  • The rise of self-checkouts has decreased the need to interact with employees at certain businesses, but there's often still a suggestion to provide a tip. Rachel Wolfe, a consumer behavior reporter for The Wall Street Journal, joins Errol Barnett and Lana Zak to explain where tips at self-checkouts go and how Americans feel about the practice.

What to know and do when the Tipping prompt comes up:
    1) Hit “No tip” option
    2) Request a receipt and check your bank statements to ensure your being charged correctly.
No service. No tip. Me taking something off a shelf and bring it to the checkout station should not get a tip. Having food brought to me and refilling drinks, yes to tipping. 15% traditional. More if it merits it.

in France it's not frowned upon, but it's appreciated like when you have to pay 18€ and have a 20€ bill, you'll just give the server the 2€ and say "keep the change" or something, and then the servers says thanks.

It's a real pleasure to see a price on an item in a store and that is exactly what you pay. Here in America the price displayed is NOT what you pay. You have to do a mental calculation to add taxes. Foods aren't supposed to be taxed but they get around it in our state by taxing some "non nutritional" foods and beverages and some non food items like ladies' monthly items. Imo they should not be taxed but they are in many places.

That should not even be a question. There is no reason for customers to tip for such services. If some wealthy/generous person wants to tip then there should be a way to do, but this tip option is not applicable to 99.9% of the customers and so businesses should stop showing this options to general public.

This form of Tipping is distroying where tips were truly deserved and expected. It's embarrassing, when I'm a guest of someone else buying the table's meals. It's disturbing when the host is paying, for my meals, and they don't know how much to tip. I feel horrible when my host isn't even tipping 10%, yet is buying me meals, at restaurants. I do my best to intice my host(s) to tip the restaurant's staff appropriately. It's awkward, cause I can't afford the meals, let alone tip on top of the lame tips my host tipped. Or is it expected to tip when someone sends you flowers or gifts? If I have the cash, I have no problem with gratitudy, but usually I don't and only go out when someone else is buying. To go orders, many times, takes as much effort as table service, etc. And will tip, also. But I don't go, cause I'm a poor _ _ _ _ _.
