The dirty truth about supermarkets (Marketplace)

  • CBC Marketplace went undercover to investigate food safety protocols in some of Canada’s biggest supermarket chains. Based on seven years of inspection records provided by Toronto Public Health, producers took hidden cameras into some Toronto supermarkets with high rates of serious infractions. They spotted flies in the meat department, employees not wearing masks and empty soap dispensers in a public washroom. With the help of a retired health inspector, Marketplace also tested the internal temperature of some foods and found that some pose a high risk of causing food poisoning.

    I’m a cashier at grocery store. What people don’t understand is we are doing everything we can to sanitize everything to keep customers safe but it doesn’t help when customers don’t want to sanitize there hands or wear a mask when they come in. It just makes all of our efforts pointless. I’m sorry that the sanitizer drys out your hands or if it smells bad for like 2 seconds or that you don’t like wearing your mask for 10 minutes you come in to pick up groceries. I have to wear my mask for 8 hours, you think I like it? I wear it to keep you safe, and my fellow employees safe and myself safe. It’s the least you can do when I’m putting my own health at risk to help you. Also the pin pads are really difficult to clean. I know my store had to replace like 4 machines because we were cleaning them so much that they got water damaged. It’s just a lot easier if people sanitize when the come in the store and when they leave. It can’t be left all up to the stores, you guys gotta do your part too.

    Passing a safety inspection is an empty assurance. I worked at a deli for 5 years and we were informed of the inspection anywhere from a week ahead to a day ahead. Boss ran around with head cut off cleaning and fixing things that were not up to standard.

      I worked in a hospital for years and as you stated about the deli you worked in...when supervisors knew the state was coming to inspect facilities...everyone got overtime because they worked them like dogs...to make management 'look good'.

      Yes common at McDonalds too, they generally know when the health inspector is coming in and do a top notch job of spiffing the joint up. I suppose though you could look at this from their perspective, the place is at least getting cleaned once in a while because if there were no inspections it would never get cleaned! My wife worked in several McDonald’s for years, if you were sick with anything you were not supposed to work but they would not send anyone home and if they called in sick they were given a hard time about it and then had to face shorter hours in the following weeks as management retaliated. They would have employees working with fevers, the runs, coughing, runny noses, management and owner didn’t care whether it was a health rule or not. I never eat there and rarely eat at any chain fast food joints.

Even before covid grocery stores, restaurants, special care homes, hospitals and so many other businesses have horrible practices of hygiene. I understand everyone's concern with the sanitizer pump germs but the thing is your hands are dirty, the pump is dirty, you squeeze out disinfectant and rub all areas and then your hands are miraculously cleaned. It doesn't matter if the pump is dirty because as soon as you do a proper disinfection of your hands, the germs go away.
    People worry about the wrong things and then immediately do piles of careless things right after. I carry my own pocket size disinfection liquid and use a lot just inside the grocery store door and just after leaving shopping (because people need to see a show of people disinfecting). That handles all the germs inside the store (pump, trolleys, baskets, doors, card keypad, counter, products)... JUST DO NOT TOUCH YOUR MASK, FACE, ETC. Do another good hand disinfection after you have gone out the door. The distancing is because most masks do not work well enough. It really is not brain surgery!
    I worked in the medical field with sterilization and disinfection as part of my job, so often still see people doing silly things thinking they are protecting themselves!
    By the way... those stores really are not doing much good in disinfecting anything. They are basically just moving the germs round. You need to be responsible for yourself.

If one of these fails, one might be eating some undesired bacteria in the end. :/ So if you eat meat and fish cook them properly, no rare/medium rare. Treat yourself like a pregnant woman XD

    Here in the U.S., some major retailers and supermarket chains are not allowed to sanitize the pin pad and its screen due to the damage it does to the machines. Some resolved it by placing clear tape over the entire unit; however, its still not 100% safe and clean. If I am to use the pin pad, I use my middle knuckle to enter in the pin. They are a good number of retailers (including Walmart) that still does not allow NFC communications for contactless payment processing.

    Things like this baffle me. In New Zealand, when the pandemic reached us, the supermarkets had signs all over the place telling customers to stay 2m away from each other and stickers at the entrances so people could tell how far to space apart while waiting in line to get in. Only a certain number were allowed in the store at any given time, so security were at the entrances counting when people went in and out. The checkouts had (and still have) Perspex screens separating the operators from the customers and the distancing stickers were on the floor there and lines to guide customers on where to line up for checkouts, since lines were a lot longer. Every supermarket in the country had to conform to this.

    here in Germany the stores I go to have hand sanitizer at the entrance... I use it for my hands and the cart... and when I leave the store I have hand sanitizer in my car... and the first thing I do when I come home I wash my hands... and while I am in the store I wear a mask since it is mandatory here... all the cashiers are protected by a plexiglas wall...
    but all of this does not help if there are people out there who do not care about others 😔

    I was a cashier in a clothing store many years ago, long before self-swipe credit cards. People often paid in cash. It was crazy how often people stood in line, cash in hand, and sneezed right into the cash that they then handed over to me. Yeech.

      They were told by their doctors that once they both recovered from Covid-19 they were immune to catching it again very soon. The immunity isn't considered life-long, but it was safe for them both not to wear a mask in each other's company.

    • @KirstiStephenson
      @KirstiStephenson 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevekelly6206 I haven't seen or read any scientific research that "Guarantees" Automatic Immunity for any length of time. In Fact, there are many documented cases of people being reinfected with Covid after beating it and becoming exposed again..... Never mind just covid his wife has Co-morbidities and other health issues that would be affected by things like the flu or other germs he may be carrying and since she is probably very immuno compromised and her immune system is exhausted after an extended period of time in the hospital I find it very foolish not to be a 100% careful with your wife and protect her from a myriad of different issues including reinfection from covid potentially!

    • @stevekelly6206
      @stevekelly6206 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many of the concerns you voiced are valid, but at the time of her release from hospital (beginning of July) they were advised by their doctors that they could greet each other sans masks, and they wouldn't take the risk if they felt there was one. Had she been released now, the advice given may be different. Unfortunately Covid-19 didn't come with an instruction booklet, science has had to adapt and evolve accordingly.

    • @KirstiStephenson
      @KirstiStephenson 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevekelly6206 You just reinforced my point....Covid was evolving, our knowledge of it kept changing...given those Factors, They should be wearing masks for their maximum safety.....The reason why It initially annoyed me so much to see that he wasn't wearing a mask to meet her after her ordeal in the Hospital was this whole story was predicated on his interviews slamming grocery stores and slamming other people for not taking proper precautions by wearing masks and using sanitary measures and cleaning etc etc that's what the whole story was about!!! And that's how they caught Covid, and then after his Wifes huge ordeal he doesn't bother wearing a mask to greet her when she comes out of the hospital? That doesn't make any sense to me it completely negates his entire argument for this whole story if you're going to behave like that at the end! 💯🤧💨
