    I already knew u are actually a genius after 14:29 because you are the only 1 I saw on youtube who understood how those different models are actually made ,ie using different decay times for each frequency band (3 in case of echoboy) Im pretty sure valhalla used the same method to design the tape models and stuff but its all under the hood whereas echoboy its all over the hood with their style edit menu which the just makes echoboy insanely more versatile and you can get almost any delay sound out of it
    Though valhalla just blew it with the pitch modulated delays they sound so great and crazy!!!
    One funny thing about echoboy is that echoboy jr. which is the stripped down version of echoboy is much much more user friendly than echoboy , soundtoys gotto do somethin about it😂😅

    Its funny…my eyes wander for a second, I hear something and think “this sounds kind of like one of my delays”, then look back at echo boy being tweaked. You get so used to the character of certain processors that you use all the time. They definitely each have their own charm. I gotta update my Valhalla folder, man…all I have is Vintage Verb at the moment and it’s so top shelf, I trust essentially anything they release to sound great. Delay and Shimmer…those are the ones I really gotta pick up soon. I don’t have a dedicated shimmer…I find myself building them on an aux with reverbs, pitch shifters, etc. whenever I “need” one.

    What advantage would the Soundtoys have over the stock Studio One Analog and Beat delay plugins? I can tag on a saturator like the Red Light Distortion at the end of the chain as well. If it's any help I mainly use the delays for lead guitar + vocals. Nothing too 'out there'. Just helping it sit nicely in a mix

    • @GreenLightSound
      @GreenLightSound  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The main advantages are control of the echoes in terms of tone/timing, modeling of specific classic delay units, and overall flexibility. If you're only looking for standard delays, the stock Studio One plugins are just fine.

    You guys need to remember that Valhalla's been featured on many huge modern records, take "Rockabye" by Clean Bandit for example, 2.2 billion views on youtube, the song also has been featured in a "In the studio..." video where Clean Bandit shows at some point how they used valhalla plugs for their reverberation needs. If they made it in the industry relying on 50$ reverbs, then anyone else is capable of doing so, it just ultimately proves that Valhalla stuff is great despite the low price and also that the user is far more important than the tools themselves. If you can't make a record using Valhalla stuff then it's definitely not the plugins fault.

      Both Valhalla and EchoBoy are great tools, and both have been used on great sounding recordings.

    • @costinvaly1
      @costinvaly1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ListenAndLearned Yeah, but we're talking about delay/reverb plugs here. You know that outboard "delays" (e.g. Eventide) are still DSP chips based units that also run an algo just like a native plugin does? Mixing as a whole is a different story and in the case of EDM/Pop music the artist tells the mixing engineer that they'd like to keep their delays/reverb effects if it already matches the song perfectly. The engineer would only ask to send him the bounced Send Tracks too in order to improve that existing effect tonally instead of the timing and the "design" of it. It's all a matter of decisions and choices in the end. Luca Petrolesi for example he's a mixing engineer who also incorporates valhalla plugs into his process and there's no other guy after him mixing wise rather than the Mastering engineer that does nothing about delays/reverbs anyway.

    • @costinvaly1
      @costinvaly1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ListenAndLearned What i was trying to say when it comes to delays whether or not digital, is that they're less relevant to compare to their analog counterparts compared to the main EQs, Comps, etc. You could mix with virtual delays/reverbs/FX (like Schepps, Luca Petrolesi, etc. does) but still adding that analog touch with an outboard compressor/EQ on top of that. Yes, those analog primary mixing tools are still better than what you get in the box due to their organic non linear processing that's heavily influenced by the electrical components which by the way, never sound the same when you compare 2 of the same hardware model, their action is mostly identical but the way each unit reacts to the input it's just different. I personally have 2 distressors in my studio, one of my buds also have one. We even done a comparison once just for fun, rendering the same mixdown through our distressors, using the same knob positions, etc. and when we tried to cancel them out by inversing the phase it just didn't happen. Also paradoxically, it's the digital that emulates the analog, not the other way around so the "bias" will always be higher towards the analog because that's the reference, whilst the virtual tools are always the "underdogs". Nonetheless, the difference between analog and digital never stopped hits in the making and never will, that's what the radio charts and multi-millionaire artists have to say. Frankly, the composition in itself will always be the sonic story that the audience receives. If that sucks, no tool can fix it whether digital nor analog.

    • @magick1969
      @magick1969 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ListenAndLearned On board DSPs for FET based solutions will always crush plugins running through your CPU or on-system co-processor. The grade of DSP is much higher on dedicated hardware. Both fall way short relative to tube based analog equivalents.

    Cool comparison. Do you know Meldas MXXX? I mean principally spoken every effect plugin looks outdated compared to that. I think Soundtoy is simply overpriced. Valhalla delay is awesome for that value but limited concerning modulation. In MXXX you can build and modulate everything you can think of and modulate each and every parameter. Always great for working life or experimentation on the fly and if you want to avoid having 20 automation lines in your DAW. It's literally endless and very very good sounding.
    So in comparison Echoboy is totally beyond pricy for its limitations and the price of Valhalla delay is very fair and equals the quality and possibilities you are given.

      Good info. I have lots of Melda plugins and know about their extensive modulation options, but I haven't tried MXXX yet.
      The key with SoundToys is to get them on sale. You can get the bundle for a decent price a few times a year.

      @@GreenLightSound Cool you use those too. Yes sales are great and nearly all have them, so are Melda and many others :) But it also leaves a bad taste in your mouth especially if you bought on full price and a few month later it's only a fracture of the original price.
      The price policy of Valhalla is fixed for years now, what I think is a cool thing and it always equals the package. Would be nice if all would have such a policy. Cheers.

    you didn't used the saturation at ECHOBOY at all. Because Valhalla is already more saturated (sound fuller then). That will change everything. Bad comparsion from my point of view.

    • @GreenLightSound
      @GreenLightSound  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Check again. Some of the style presets used subtle amounts of saturation, and there was definitely saturation going on in the tweak menu. My goal here was to compare the overall sound of each, not to try to match them exactly.

    • @costinvaly1
      @costinvaly1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "So much better"? Then how do you explain those huge artists like Clean Bandit (google it in case they failed to reach your popular national radio channels, although i doubt they haven't) who rely on Valhalla plugs in most of their songs? The band has 2.2 billion views just on their Rockabye record alone, which has been featured in a "Clean Bandit in the studio" video here on YT where they clearly show how they used Valhalla plugs in that song. If they can make it in the music industry with over 5 billion views on YT in total and topping charts worldwide for years, consistently relying on Valhalla for reverberation and other stuff in their songs, then i bet everyone else is capable to rely on these plugs as well. I'm not saying Echoboy is bad, but being "so much better" than another plug that's already been proven in the industry it's quite a stretch. Especially when Valhalla's cost only 50$ and is still capable to be part in huge records.

      costinvaly1 Uh, i’m a fan of Valhalla DSP but really? I’m sure there’s probably as many or more ‘hits’ made with Sound Toys. Also i don’t think popularity is a necessarily good indicator of quality. I’d be happy owning both...

    • @costinvaly1
      @costinvaly1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@crysstoll1191 i wasn't justifying the quality with my statement, i justified the fact that even by spending 50$ (for a Valhalla plug) you can still get pro level stuff done while aspiring to become part of the music industry. My artists examples are testaments that you can get away with paying 50$ for a plugin instead of 150$ (soundtoys typical for EchoBoy). Do you realize that in the long run you've lost 100$ difference for a god damn virtual piece of product, when the 100$ cheaper one gets the job done (and more) for just 50$. Imagine all that steak you could eat with 100$ budget. Doesn't matter how rich you are btw. In fact, the rich care even for a 5$ profit if possible. They don't forgive anything, that's what keeps them rich.
