- Salt, a crucial ingredient in most cooking, plays a vital role in flavor. Today, on Goan Appetit, we'll explore the traditional process of making local salt.
Our host, Alroy Fernandes, heads to the village of Batim to visit the salt pans and learn about the methods used by the ‘Mittkaar’, the traditional salt makers.
Locally made salt, has various uses beyond just flavoring food. It's traditionally used for throat infections, food preservation, making pickles, and even as manure.
Join us on this episode of Goan Appetit as we take you on a journey to Batim, the heart of this unique salt-making tradition. However, this age-old occupation is slowly fading away, with only a few ‘Mittkaars’ remaining.

Nice one! Salt is also used as a fertilizer for coconut trees.
Yeah we do this very often for our trees also, a nice ring around the tree of salt

Wow. Interesting episode by our very own local salt bae! 😉
Hahahahaha brilliant 😂
Patrao, that is not rock salt but just normal sea salt that is evaporated into fine form. Rock salt is mined from large, rock deposits and then crushed. Good documentary though.
