@@PeteJohnsMusic That was how it worked before with me. But now it doesn't, so that is why I was looking for answers online. I'll unplug everything and try it again.
Hey Pete, I have a piano with Midi In/Out. I know the Midi Out is working 100%, never used Midi In yet so I can't say for sure but I assume it also works. Questions: 1) Can I connect such a cable to only the piano's midi out, essentially only connecting one of the midi ends? 2) Does the USB light on yours light up already when you only have the USB connected but not the midi? Reason I'm asking is because I got a similar (but different brand) cable yesterday simply can't get it to work at all. None of the LEDs are lighting up at all. I tried different USB ports on my PC already and also on my tablet.
Hey there. Yes, you can totally use for just MIDI out from a keyboard. That’s how I use mine. And the issue with it not working? I’ve found that cheaper cables are super unreliable which is why I recommend the Roland/Edirol version. It’s a little more expensive but everyone I’ve recommended it to has had success.

Nicely done! Thanks so much for this. I'd been avoiding keyboard-oriented plug-ins for my DAW because I didn't have a MIDI controller and I'm watching the budget. My Yamaha CVP-401 has 5-pin MIDI in and out, so as soon as my USB adapter shows up in the mail, I'll be off to the races.

Hi Pete. Thanks for your contribution. Have you done a presentation on how to use the midi out from garbage band to control the keyboard? That would be a nice one.
Hey there Marcus. Alas, GarageBand doesn’t support MIDI out at this stage. Hopefully this will be added in at some stage and when it is I’ll be sure to talk about it here!
@@PeteJohnsMusic i have an old keyboard. I need to input a midi file via USB into the keyboard but it doesnt have a USB port. Is this possible? Thank you!
Silly question but is it better to use midi 5 port cables that connect to USB, or using midi to midi that plugs in to the back of audio interface? I plan on using my Yamaha keyboard to play in Ableton and Studio 1-4. Great video !
Hey there. So, really doesn’t make much difference in my experience. Direct USB MIDI seems to be the best option most of the time but the Edirol/Roland adapter is really good and super low latency.
Yup, that's common. You'll notice I only actually show sending MIDI data from the keyboard to the iPad so you can safely just use one of the MIDI cables with an adapter like this.
Hi Pete. Thank you for this video. Im using midi to usb cables on an older Yamaha arias digitize piano. My issue is the sustain pedals are playing notes in GarageBand. How do I fix this? Thank you kindly.
Oh?! That’s a weird one. I’ve heard of sustain working backwards, needing a sustain pedal with a polarity switch.. but not playing notes? Maybe ask over at the GarageBand Users Facebook group? studiolivetoday.com/gbu
Lol, I had some problems with my old keyboard and started googling, came up here and see you have the exact same keyboard :'). I still hear noises i don't play in my DAW and it doesn't react as it should.
Hey there. Are you using the Edirol or Roland adapter cable? It's been a while, but I don't think there is anything you need to do to enable MIDI on the Casio, but it doesn't seem to like any of the cheaper MIDI to USB cables.
Noob question: My keyboard is a rather old Yamaha, it has only a MIDI Output, and it has two 3.5mm connections, one for AUX output and other for Headphones. I want to connect said keyboard to my laptop to have it act as the notes input while the laptop acts as output; my intention is to use software to change the "voices" my keyboard can play. So, how would I need to go about this task? What software should I use?
Hey there. So you would need a MIDI to USB adapter like the one I’m showing. This video should help explain things. th-cam.com/video/uwYmmGEwo-A/w-d-xo.html
Do the MIDI to USB converters generally introduce any lag? It doesn't look like your setup in the video has much lag, if any. But even a small amount can be annoying.
The cheaper ones can introduce quite a lot of latency, but the more advanced and higher quality ones like the Roland are actually surprisingly low latency. 👍
This is perfect! On IPad, Will the USB-Lightning 3 adapter you mentioned allow me to monitor the GarageBand audio output with this set up?? (Using one lightning input from keyboard Roland adapter, then another lightning cable to my speaker?
You will generally need some sort of USB audio device like an interface or sound card for monitoring. This video has some info that might help. th-cam.com/video/wpu9EOTyur4/w-d-xo.html
how do i change a kurzweil sp88 keyboard to midi mode????? it's a 21 year old keyboard and the only instructions i could find were in the 8u7 page manual that i couldn't understand at all.
Can I use one of these on a casio ck1200? It only has 2 plugs at the back and I need one for the charger. Ugh, so bad with these kind of things but so much want a realistic piano sound on my old keyboard 😩
Hey Pete, I have a Celviano, AP-40, on the instruction manual page E-25/26, it says i can send and receive a range of general MIDI piano Tone signals, the current 8 default tones on my AP-40 are not great and I'd like to try other tone types. Have you tried this? I just ordered a MIDI to USB and I have an Apogee Duet ii, so I'm hoping i can send a Rock Organ midi signal back into the Celviano which should alter the tone type values on my Celviano, ultimately I'd like the new tone to come out of the speakers on the Celviano. Thanks! Great video
Hey there. GOod question Chuck? I haven't actually used MIDI back from software to a keyboard personally as none of my keyboards have supported this. But this adapter definitely supports MIDI in and out so if the hardware supports it, then it should work.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Just wanted to let you know I was able to take the midi to usb cable i picked up, from my ap-40 into my duet by apogee, control the sounds using garage band, then send the signal out of the duet, using the 1/4" jacks into the 1/4" jack inputs on the back of the keyboard! I now have any sound I'd ever want or imagine! Cheers

I just bought a merely MIDI cable. How can I connect it to the computer?
This video should give you the method you need to use? For Mac and PC it’s pretty much plug and play.
@@PeteJohnsMusic The problem is, I don't have a MIDI to USB transmitter whatsoever. My PC doesnt have a MIDI port
can you use it on a yamaha motif 6
If it has a standard 5pin MIDI DIN connector then your can use it. 🤘😎
u saved my life, thx ;)
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
Thanks, for information been looking for this for my casio ct 700 and do you think it will be able to work with my casio?
If the Casio sends standard general MIDI you’ll be fine. 👍😎
@@PeteJohnsMusic
Hey Pete.
I also have a casio 700. Would I plug into my Focusrite 2i2/3rd gen. Interface? Just wondering.
Super useful, cheers!
Very welcome my friend. Hope you get value from the other videos on the channel and consider subscribing.
I realise that this video is 5 years old so I'm late to the game , however. what do I do if my keyboard only has midi out?
Yup, that's common. You'll notice I only actually show sending MIDI data from the keyboard to the iPad so you can safely just use one of the MIDI cables with an adapter like this.
Nice one, thanks very much. I'll give it a go. @@PeteJohnsMusic
How to enable the midi mode on that keyboard ?
Hey there. Are you using the Edirol or Roland adapter cable? It's been a while, but I don't think there is anything you need to do to enable MIDI on the Casio, but it doesn't seem to like any of the cheaper MIDI to USB cables.
Sir i am having Yamaha psr e303 keyboard can i connect it as a midi keyboard..
Hey there. You might need to check the manual for details on this one, or search online. I haven’t personally used this keyboard.
@@PeteJohnsMusic thank you sir..
@Nothing But Music I have the same keyboard and was wondering the same thing, were you able to figure it out?
@@jesseisawesome15 i was able to connect it but it have latency problem
can we connect yamaha psr i455 and roland xps 30 to transfer tones one another
I don’t believe so? But maybe. Not familiar sorry.
What is the name for both adapters please?
Check the description. All product links are down there.
Would a mio iConnectivity 1-in/1 out USB to MIDI work the same was the ROLAND UM-ONE? Which is better? Thank you.
I haven’t personally tried this adapter but others have told me it works. I’ve always used the Roland and find it super reliable.
Noob question:
My keyboard is a rather old Yamaha, it has only a MIDI Output, and it has two 3.5mm connections, one for AUX output and other for Headphones.

@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks a bunch!
What is the model number of your Casio? I like this older ones. Mine is a Yamaha PSR 170 from about 20 years ago and still going strong.
It’s the WK-3000. Great unit! I don’t need it anymore but I love it and just can’t say goodbye. 😄
Just subscribed, I will be binging on your videos for quite some time!
If you want to sell it, let me know. I’m looking.
My mom gave me her old keyboard for my 19th birthday. I'm excited to have more room than what my mpk mini offers!
Awesome! Hope it helps you produce more music. 👍
Pete Johns Thanks!
🙏
Yeah, not sure sorry - might need to do some Googling or ask around some forums.
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks for the advice
Can I use one of these on a casio ck1200? It only has 2 plugs at the back and I need one for the charger. Ugh, so bad with these kind of things but so much want a realistic piano sound on my old keyboard 😩
Hey there. It depends on what ports they actually are? If one is a MIDI port then you can.
Thanks for your reply 👍 🙂 the port doesn't have any pins so I'm assuming it's not MIDI?
Hello. When i plug it in it does not downloud the drivers fro it. Is theri a way to do this?
Hey there. You will need to use a device that doesn’t require drivers for iOS as it doesn’t support device drivers.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks, i'll let you know how it works out!
Cheers
Thanks alot

Hello sir this item is not available in Amazon
Bummer! Hopefully you can find one somewhere.
Sir Korg X5D is Ok?? So I can use Kontakt 6 with VST ?? It is like a To Host PC??
Hi there. All of this depends on the software you are using. Any standard MIDI keyboard with 5-pin DIN connectors will be able to send MIDI note information.

@@PeteJohnsMusic please help me i have only midi out on my MIDI Keyboard how to connect with pc , plz guide
So you don't need an audio interface do you?
Nope. Not for MIDI. Only if you want to record the actual audio from a keyboard.
Hello can I put rhymes in the connection of pc midi
I’m not sure what the question is sorry? Maybe ask over at the Create Record Release Facebook group. createrecordreleaae.com
What app do u have on your ios to change the sounds?
I use mostly GarageBand because it’s free and awesome.
