Mulaney did write a lot of material for Hader when he was on SNL. Mulaney's sensibility + Hader always equaled comedy gold - this would have been hilarious for Hader.
Well, he was a lead writer on there for years, and he wanted to move on to other things. He just maintained a great relationship with everyone there, so he still hosts sort of frequently.
