    Hi Nathan,
    the Kaltschale ( Sourcherry Fruitsoup) doesnt get heated, you chill it in the Fridge for an Hour or two, Stir it and enjoy it (very refreshing in the summer heat). Its actually dirt-cheap here, 5 of those Satchels cost about 1,30 Euro ... dont tell that Gundog or he starts to howl at the moon again for missing his Fruitsoup ;D :D
    The Chilli Pepper Cheese Spread is meant to be eaten on Bread or a Hardkeks (Biscuit), if you feel adventurous you can mix some of the spread with the Tuna Lemon Pepper on a Bread or Biscuit :D
    In Scho-Ko-Lade is no meth, that was in "Pervitin" aka "Stuka-Tabletts". A at that time freely available Drug that was used by many German Pilot and Soldiers
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methamphetamine#History,_society,_and_culture

    • @Chrinik
      @Chrinik 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pervitin actually got turned prescription only in 1941 by german doctors, but by then the Wehrmacht hat already ordered and recieved so many tablets they gave them out til the end of the war.
      And it's not like it was comparable to modern meth, it was a very small dosage, and even then, many militaries used stimulant drugs to increase their soldiers capacity.

    Great video, Nathan! The length didn't bug me at all, especially when it was a 24 hr. ration. The desserts got to me, though. I want gummy bears and milk chocolate something fierce right now!
    Carsten really came through for you with that one! He's one stand up guy to send all that to you. It must have cost a bunch to send it from Germany like that, so he's one heck of a buddy. Treat him right and send him something nice and rare, like one of the new MRE pizza rations!

    I'm surprised you got your package! I mean I got my package within 2 weeks but I got notified that German customs is apparently backed up and having a hard time getting everything sent out! For the sake of the video I'm glad they got it sent out! I highly disagree with the people saying they hate watching longer videos. The longer the better for me! I think alot of us agree. There are just some people that don't like watching videos and want to nitpick with what you upload as if its their channel and mot yours. I'll support you either way! If you wanna put a longer video up, go right ahead. Many of us will support and watch it don't worry!

    So Zitrone (pronounced like Tsee-tro-ne with the ne like in next) is lemon, Limette is lime.

Nice of Carsten to send you the ration too. Thankfully i love grapefruit and could not wait for you to take a taste of it. I need to see if i can order them somewhere. For German bread it can be said: The darker the bread, like the black bread that is baked for 16 hours at 120 degrees Celsius, the healthier. Since the rye is not ground here, you have the healthy skin of the grain inside. So what I want to say is the longer it is baked at a low temp. The darker the bread. In Germany this bread was considered poor people's food until the mid-19th century. Incidentally, this type of baking keeps the bread longer.
    PS: In the end the forbidden stanza of the national anthem was played!

    • @ZuhlJin
      @ZuhlJin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It isn't forbidden. It's the first stanza of "Das Lied der Deutschen". This is a common misunderstanding in Germany and of course it's really not a good a idea to sing it or use it in any way in Germany and it was very strange to hear it at the end of the video.
      Only the third stanza is the national anthem (since 91 at least).

  • @cajokl
    @cajokl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    a quick reminder for all non Germans: in min 37:00 this is not the official German anthem, this is the first verse of three. the first and the second are forbidden we only use the third. so don't sing "Germany over all" in Germany or you might get a penalize.
    The review was great, keep it up!

    • @Vail79
      @Vail79 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Thats not true, its not forbidden.

    • @cajokl
      @cajokl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A country shouldn't alter a national anthem just because it's not socially acceptable. I'm Belgian and i think you guys have one of the coolest anthems right after France but cutting shit out because it's socially unacceptable is just plain wrong.

    • @NKA23
      @NKA23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It´s NOT forbidden, it´s just not socially acceptable. The anthem´s lyrics were written WAY before the Third Reich and referr to a completely different historical situation, but considering the history of Third Reich the first and second verses´ lyrics are pretty much misleading. So we dumbed them.

    FYI: This is a 24 hour ration, so you're basically supposed to get 3 meals out of that (and then it's not that huge). The rye bread, preserves and müsli would constitute the breakfast and then you have one airplane size meal for both lunch and dinner and dessert sprinkeld throughout
    Also on the Chili Pepper thing it says Brotaufstrich, meaning it is supposed to be spread on the bread (or crackers)

But I have epas clear back from 1975 and like 9 different years from 75 to 2011. Gotta be careful with the tea and coffee extract btw. It makes way, way more than were used to.

    If you say the German names for things out loud you'll probably figure out what they are since English is closely related to German. The packet you thought might be muesli clearly said "fruit dessert" on it. Tomaten = tomato, salz = salt, etc... Yes, German can be a hard language, but a lot of the common words sound like ours if you say them aloud. :)

    • @coversum
      @coversum 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's because the two languages are closely related - "germanic languages". The Saxons and Angles in England (Angle's Land) came from nowadays Germany. We still have the states Saxony and Lower Saxony. Then in 1066 came the Bretons with their pesky french (Latin) tongue and mixed up the dominant language (s) on the island.
      All in all - todays English (be it US or GB) is a thousand year mix of Roman Latin, Germanics, Scandinavian (Vikings), later French and again (roman-catholic) Latin.

    Great review. What always amuses me about these nordic kind of rations is that noone outside northern europe know how you properly eat ryebread and what you put on it. I have seen some use it as dipping for soup(like you), some put marmelade on it instead of the pate that you usually get with it. Actually what you are supposed to use it with is the tuna, that you spread on top of it, or those small vegetable packages.

      Fred Thorne is ALDI considered a high quality store in germany? In the US it is an extremely cheap and low income customer oriented grocery store. Curious if its the same in Germany or not

    • @fredthorne9692
      @fredthorne9692 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Skoopsro Skoopsro - That's a good question. ALDI and Trader Joe's are both owned by the German company Albrecht. There are two ALDI companies ALDI Nord and ALDI Sud. I believe ALDI Nord owns the American stores. When ALDI bought the discount chain BOTTOM DOLLAR they essentially killed the competition. Since that time, I believe, haven't been as low priced to the other Supermarket chains in my region. ALDI does their own branding with occasional major brands being sold. Some of their items are made in Germany and branded Deutche Küche. The bread I mentioned is sold in small rectangular packages about 3"× 6" and has a very long shelf life. It is crustless, moist, and loaded with whole grains and seeds. I like it toasted and it is dark with a sourdough taste. I guess it's a European thing but I do like it, especially with moldy rind stinky Käse und Bier.

      Darkbase - I do believe you are correct in that statement. However, if I'm being cheap and miserly, I will include ALDI in my shopping rounds. Paper goods, some dairy and cheeses are OK. Chocolate is a tough item. American chocolate and German chocolate are, to me, very different. I prefer the German chocolate. However, once in a while I'll be patriotic and buy HERSHEY'S! 🇺🇸🗽🍫🎆🎇😁

      the contents of this EPA are actually produced by the same companys that deliver to ur average discounter, aka ALDI. ;) other than those hard biscuits ( which btw. are called panzerplatten or panzerkekse, armorplates, here in germany ) and the travelmüsli and fruitdessert u can happily buy about all of that when u do ur groceryshopping. and it will even be cheaper than buying an epa.
      and as it has been mentioned above: while aldi sells a lot of stuff for a very low price, their products are often exactly the same as u would get when u buy premium brand products. here in germany it´s easiest to see with dairyproducts. yoghurt and so on has to have a label that states producer and origin. in a lot of cases the ALDI-eigenmarken ( aldi brands ) are the same u will get for a lot more money with a different brand and label. it´s the same with cookies, bread and plenty of other things. if u do a quick googlesearch u can easily find plenty of products sold there that will cost a lot more in other shops with a different label and no other difference. if it´s the same in the states: good for u. here ALDI is the most frequented discounter. about at least 70 % of people go shopping there, if not more...

    "Darjeeling" is actually not a German term, but the name of the region in India this kind of black tea comes from. Just pronounce it like you intuitively would, so "duh-jee-ling". ^^

    Man makes we want to change my chili recipe and throw in corn and green beans! the haribo are available in the US, they have starmix and my favorite all cherry, but they are made in Turkey when I buy them! They do have Kosher ones made in Austria from fish gelatin! And the Nazis did give their troops Amphetamine tablets that were pill form, many got addicted to them and there were many issues with them, they were called Pervitin!
