Took a box full of plants to the local swap and came home with ZERO! Been feeling overwhelmed and having been focusing on only keeping the plants that really excite me in hopes of having a more manageable collection to take better care of without stressing myself out. It's hard to be mindful of more than you can handle and that number is different for everyone in each season of life

For the fertilizer: if your plant is growing you can fertilize, if you are unsure or it slows down, you can simply dilute the fertilizer more or fertilize less often. If your holseplant keeps growing in winter like normal, then keep fertilizing like normal. They don´t experience winter that much inside our house, especially if you use growlights.
I have over 10 plants and they are scattered around in groups. I want to be able to see all my plants on a more daily basis, If I had a grow tenet I would probably forget to go there and everything would dry out constantly. But I´m thinking about getting a cabinet, and that could also be a recovery zone if needed, or I just plop it in a big clear plastic bin.
I have 1 mosspole right now, wasn´t sure if I like it so I wanted to try it out with just one. Mine has a closed back and I water it every 3-5 days (maybe even a little less in winter) I would say. You could wrap the empty top with cling film and it will dry out slower, I did that in the beginning and then just make sure you water the moss well and don´t let it get bone dry because the moss will get hydrophobic.
I used to hate moss pole maintenance as well, I find that it helps to use those little plant watering birds with the terra cotta base to keep them moist, just stick it in the top and fill it with water, it doesn't totally keep it watered, you will still have to hand water, especially with the poles like yours that are open all around, but it helps dramatically. The biggest thing for me though was switching all my moss poles to the kind with a solid plastic back, they dry out MUCH slower, and almost don't stress me out at all anymore.
Being flexible is actually really good advice cause I have a habit of sticking to the same routine and then wondering why one of my plants has an issue when I refuse to get out of my routine to take care of it 🤦🏻♀️
Me too Taylor, but I'm branching out since most of my houseplants got root rot. 😢😮 I lost a few, saved a few (prop), and just threw one or two out because it's too much to keep alive (Polkadot plant). I moved some to see if there's a better spot for them. I've only been into plants 🌿☘️ for a year now so I'm still learning 😊 I appreciate Harli for all her tips and sharing her knowledge with us. I'm learning so much...🌵🌼🌱💋

HARLI, TRY A D-SHAPED MOSS POLE!
You have to make them, but they hold moisture far better than the normal moss pole. Also, water them with a plastic cup with a small hole. It keeps them watered for longer as it drips water in slowly.

I don't have room for a grow tent, but I have two plant shelves in a corner of my kitchen. I have plants sitting on my window sills, and I have plants sitting on my desk where I work from home. I like to be surrounded by them while i work, and I have plants sitting at the end of my bed and in the floor.
I watched Sydney Plant Guy and he has lots of BIG moss poles and he just keeps plastic water bottles filled and ready for use. So, I grabbed a few 20 oz water bottles, tapped 3 holes in the caps, filled them up, turned them upside down and the water will drip in. You have to use a really chunky mix in the pot and I also used net pots just to be safe. After the water drips out of the bottle, I drain the pot after 30 minutes or so and check it again in an hour so the plant doesn’t sit in water. Sometimes the moss doesn’t need a ton of water so I might leave it on for 10 oz of it 🤷🏻♀ then I fill the bottles back up and wait til the moss needs them again.
Moss pole tip...fill a water bottle, put a hole in the lid then place it upside down in the top of the pole. Voila moist moss pole! 🪴💚

I don’t drink out of plastic water bottles very often, but at parties I gather some up. Then I put little holes in the lid and stick on top of moss pole. The water slowly drips into moss. I still have to water them every other day, but it’s easier to fill the water bottle up and put it on the moss pole, and let it do its thing.

This vid hit me on the right day since this whole week for me is plant care and rearranging the house for winter care. I ordered a whole new rack systwn for my bedroom window and a grow light for my succulent babies. I got Monkey cactus in the mail today as a late season gift to myself and am super excited about it. Anyone else like this when winter is a impending doom you have to make that one final purchase to get you through winter lol...
You need to water your moss poles, ideally, from the top of the pole. If you have a plastic water bottle slender enough to fit down into the hardware cloth, drill 3-4 holes in the cap, fill the bottle with water, recap, and turn over into the top of your pole. Make sure you have enough space at the top empty to accommodate the bottle. Water as often as necessary or when the pole dries out.
You asked about our "planty situations" - I doubt many people have the luxury of a grow tent?? I live in a large flat, every windowsill is full of plants, as well as side tables and freestanding plant stands.. Also recently I converted my empty fish tank into a terrarium 😊
I would add that you should look up specific care for certain plants. Some can't tolerate cold or drafts (African violets, some hoyas and orchids), while some benefit from a cool winter or need a cooldown to flower (some orchids and holiday cacti). I actually moved my dendrobium aggregatum to my uninsulated sunroom that we just run a small space heater in, because I found out they need a cool, dry winter. On the other hand, my episcia is still recovering from me leaving it in there last year.
to your question around 19 minutes! I have a designated plant room, mostly because all the other rooms in my house have terrible light. I wish I could spread them all out, but it is nice to be able to go to one spot to 10 to them all!
Ok for the moss pole put holes in the water bottle so it can leak slowly and it won’t dry up so fast
My plant set up is the majority of them are in a loft plant room with smaller amounts throughout the other rooms. I have four different ikea greenhouses and a small greenhouse with clear cover. I don't think I could have a grow tent because I like to see my plants everyday and don't care for the grow tent esthetic. I use a 2gal pump sprayer to water,much easier than refilling containers and going back and forth, also better for reaching in tight spaces and less mess
I moved from a house with lots and lots of windows to a house with not much space and not that many windows. However, the grow lights have been my savior. I wish I had known about them a long time ago, I could have saved so many of my favorite plants, but I had no clue grow lights were affordable and easy to install.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who makes a huge mess when reporting 😅🙈🙈 oh and i have a greenhouse in my bedroom along with a bunch scattered everywhere in my bedroom.

a friends daughter who just got a new big plant stand arrangement plus about 10 or 15 of the white plastics pots I acquired over the last few months! Really helped me weed out some of the genuses I'm no longer interested in growing and gives me space to do some rearranging and plant housekeeping!! Win-win for us And the plants, too!!😀🌿👍🪴👏🪴😅 🌵🙌🌱
I've seen people use those self watering spikes on top of their moss poles. It's the ones that you attach a water bottle to. It slowly drips water into the moss and keeps them watered - so they say....🤷♀️
Totally agree on the grow tent being the biggest game changer! You inspired me to get a big one last year (8x4) and it’s a great investment.
It’s so nice to have a backup plan for all of my plants when crispy winter comes around.
It also holds me over while my outdoor greenhouse is empty due to weather.
Cabinets and terrariums are amazing too but they can only hold so much 😅
Love your videos! My planty situation is I have a designated room for them mainly but very few spread around the house, we like to go for the more minimal look but still enjoy nature. We also have a 4 month old puppy right now so plants be up high. He is doing really well with his training and is leaving them alone but every so often he gets curious.

I don't have a grow tent. I have a small room with south and east windows i had most my plants in, love it. My 15 year old has started loving it and took it over 😢 so I'm seeing how pothos and heart leaf philo will do in my lower light bedroom so i still have a place of peace

I have had green houses my whole life!! So a few years ago I bought a 12 x 20’ steel and Polycarbonate greenhouse. So my 600+ plants live out there. It makes moving plants in spring and fall lass stressful about bringing critters into my home. I love my homemade moss poles. I have tons. I use a sprayer like a 2 gallon to water the poles to keep moist. Add my fertilizer into the sprayer too. Just mix well to the recent clogging!! It works so well!!!
I would love to have a grow tent someday! Right now I have plants scattered throughout my house, (some being supplemented with grow lights), and a 4 tiered shelf with grow lights in my bedroom which has the sansevieria cuttings I showed you 😊 I potted the cuttings up and hoping they still keep growing 🤞🏻

I have a small greenhouse ( 2 x5.5 feet) for props , and a 8 x4 grow tent, but I purged over 600 plants this year including over 200 Hoyas so the grow tent is going to be for seed starting and propagations. I'm now only growing all types of Cacti and Euphorbias Carrion plants and a handful of other Succulents. I only have 100+ atm 😂
For growlights I use around 6 Barrina T8 sets. I'll probably switch to a few Spider Farm or Mars Hydro next year.

I live in a small house.. I have SO MANY plants… not as many as you, but probably over 150-200 in a single wide trailer… luckily the light situation is pretty good. I do have a few grow lights here and there. I also have lots of mirrors and I honestly believe that the mirrors help to bounce the light around 😂

Girl you are the cuuuutest. I love the excitement and little giggles. 😊 I’m definitely a snake plant girl i absolutely love them they’re easy and satisfying as a plant keeper. Same with syngonium and hoya. They make my heart so happy.
As for moss poles, definitely try a closed back (d shape) pole. It helps tons to keep moisture in. Think of it like this: you wouldn’t just stick a pile of moss down on a table, stick a plant in and call it good. That would dry out soso fast. Same thing with a moss pole. The uncovered poles are like having moss sitting open on a table with a plant stuck in it. More work than it’s worth. The covered ones retain moisture.
For the open poles you already have, you could try covering the backs with plastic wrap. Its also easier to water them if you spray the moss first with water so it’s not so hydrophobic, then take a water bottle and tip it over so the opening is touching the moss and let it seep out.

Hi Harli!, great as always! I have an unused bathroom (app 8' X10") with a humidifier and small electric heater to keep things at 60%and 75F. My favorite other place is a snake tank that became too small for "Spots". I used plastic wrap to seal the top screen with a grow light from Lowes, and that thing works wonders for smaller starters. I hardly need to water. My tortum and Strawberry Shake will need to move to the bathroom soon. (I am in South East Colorado. Way dry, Cold in winter and Hot in summer.)

I have many plants that are still putting out new leaves right now, but I kept hearing mixed info about winter fertilization 😅 Thank you!

Hi Harli. Love your videos. I love sandsavaria too. So easy. I moved one of mine to a east window and after having this plant in a dark corner and now in a window, put out a huge spike of blooms that filled my house with an amazing smell. I now have all my sandsavaria in bright windows. Love to see your kids. Wow they are sure growing fast. I watch your Mom's videos too. If I see a plant that is really struggling and doesn’t bring me joy after too many tries at resurrecting it I am going to get rid of it. Like your mom says be flexible. We can’t save all of them.

My planty situation - I live in a one bedroom apartment with my husband and cat. We have outgrown this place and my plants are all centralized on 2-3 stands in the living room. I do enjoy spreading them out around the place though, but my apartment doesn’t have great lighting. We are hoping to get a house soon (or at least a bigger apartment!)

I dont love moss poles either so i really dont have any. I recently got a coco pole instead to see how that does, so its not something that needs to be kept moist since it's not alive like moss. Well see if it still let's the plant grow as much though.
Buuuutttt i have these little like drip system things that i would use for a moss pole. You screw in a bottle of water onto it and stake it in to your medium and then adjust this little screw it has which controls the flow of water. So it can flow slowly all the way down to slow drips just every few seconds. Super easy way to keep the moss moist!

I'm going to try the plastic cup with the small hole in the base, wedged in the top of the moss pole when I need to fill them to the tippy top with moss. the hole is small enough that the water drips in gradually, or so I understand.
I'm not a moss pole person at all either, but I've seen people stick an empty plastic cup with holes in the bottom into the top of the pole, and then water into the cup!
I'd like to have a grow tent or a cabinet but honestly don't have the room at all right now haha my ROOM is the grow tent atm 😂
About your mosspoles: put a cup with a little hole on top to keep it moist all the time 😊

I was just told liquidirt helps the plant take in nutrients, made for older dirt potted plant if that makes sense. She said fine but use a fertilizer too or switch it up for the plants to be properly fertilized 🤷♀️ I’m on vacay donuts my plant care lady that told me, from the Philippines shes got a plant import company helping vacationers on the side. Seems legit but I’m not sure of course.

Buy the small plastic drinking cups maybe a 12oz or whatever you think will sit on the top, poke a hole through it and just set them on top of all your moss poles. Then, just walk around with a gallon just and put in the cups. It is def way easier than anything else i’ve tried. Does it keep them moist longer? ya, I think so…but way easier than any other way. I got this idea from Hakuna laplanta……he’s amazing!

Try a self watering moss pole! The ones with the PVC tubing and wicking rope. There are tons of DIY versions on TH-cam. Also, love your channel, keep up the great work :)
Plastic back moss pole..100%easier..honestly if a plant struggles too much here,i dont bother with it..theres so many plants that do love my conditions..im not going to stress myself trying to keep something that isnt happy..lifes too short for fickle plants 😂.. random videos are great..just do you ❤❤❤

I thought I had over watered but it turned out to be the fact it is getting less light ☹️ I had to move it to a different location, it seems to have settled now 😀🇨🇦
I put a bottle in my moss pole u keep the lid to the bottle on and drill a hole in the lid put water in the bottle and flip it upside down and put it on top of your pole you also have to drill a hole at the bottom of the water bottle for air flow

I think moss poles in Utah are way hard!! I have one of those continuous fertilizer/ poison sprayers that I ONLY put WATER in to spray my one moss pole plant. I would have to soak it daily to keep it damp… also I have has some luck shoving those decorate terracotta self watering globe things in the top to help me when I can’t mess with it every day…
We gonna talk about how most of these tips should be implemented to take care of ourselves? Be flexible with yourself, be patient with yourself, take notice of what works and doesnt. And make small changes as needed to get healthier and happier. And yeah, improve your water quality. The shit they put in municipal water ain't good for you (I'm literally allergic to the additives in municipal water and it gives me wild stomach cramps and makes me break out in blisters) or your plants. And since we're on water quality, imma just throw in that 49% of indigenous reservations in the US don't have access to safe drinking water. Have a great day everyone ❤❤❤
