- What is the truth about Artimus Pyle?? Did he lie in his interviews? A key detail of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash that's been debated by Skynyrd fans everywhere: Was Drummer Artimus Pyle Shot or NOT by the farmer, Johnny Mote, when he and two others walked away from the plane crash to get help, or not? In my last video where I deep dived (no pun intended) into the Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash, I mentioned that Artimus was shot. In today's episode, we dig even deeper into the local newspapers and interviews that followed immediately after the crash, to put all the pieces together and try to answer the famous question: Was Artimus Pyle Shot or Not.

I met Gene Odom and Dwayne Easley at the Memorial about a month ago, I talked with both of them uninterrupted for a good hour. The farmer shot the gun in the air, not in his arm, (Artimus Pyle).You can also watch the video of the farmer and his wife. Gene shared some great stories of the plane crash, and his argument with the pilot before the flight. His memory truly seems spot on. And as Ronnie's best friend, and security of the band. I believe Gene. If you have a chance to visit the Memorial in Gillsburg Mississippi, you won't be disappointed. You might run into the both of them..
Gene was knocked the funk out...right? His brains half knocked out his head by his account. So,he has no real-life clue what happened with Moate and Artimus. Also,who admits they shot someone? Just asking who that dumarse would be? And why is Gene still using Ronnie's name to grift money? He's tried every which way,we all know that. Cheers👍
@@stingylizard I've seen Mote's wife and others who were there essentially call Pyle a liar. Mote fired in the air to stop him. Pyle told them what was going on and ask them to use the telephone, which he did and with no bullet wound. You can also look up each person's detailed medical treatments. Pyle had nothing resembling a bullet wound. He lied. Period

When it comes to Artimus Pyle, it's a very tricky thing. Bob Burns was the actual drummer of Skynyrd. Ronnie hired Artimus, which is indeed a very good drummer, but as a hired musician. Artimus was a vegan, tree hugging liberal hippie, and was not really liked much by the rest of the band. But they needed a drummer, and he was good. Ed King was another one that was a very good musician but was not very well liked by the rest of the band. The stories have been going for years, first this, then that. But I have watched many interviews, and they all lead to the fact that Artimus as well as I think two others, went for help. One of the ones that went said Artimus kind of went in wild to get help, so the man fired the gun. I heard on one account in the air, on another over their heads. One other account said he waved the gun in the air to let them know he was armed if they meant trouble. He was NOT shot, in either account. Gene Odom, which has very little good to say about him, said Artimus loves attention. He was sickened by the movie Artimus made which has no truth to it at all. But they said Artimus was indeed worried about getting help to the rest of them and was very upset. Many people wonder why he was not asked to stay on as drummer after the tribute tour. I heard an un-official reason was because Artimus was found guilty on sexual offense charges to a minor. He refused to keep registering as a sex offender, so they paid him out with the agreement he would go away and shut up about coming back to band. I think Artimus is a very good drummer, but he definitely loves attention and never shuts up. He always was weird to my opinion.....
Gene Odom says Artemus loves attention?? How many YT videos has Gene put out in the past few years. He tells the same stories over and over again. And then he does paid tours of Jax and the neighborhood where Skynyrd grew up in. Talk about an attention whore. He even made Skynyrd shirts way after the plane crash. Talk about cashing in on the Skynyrd brand! He bitches about others making money off of the band but it’s okay for him to do it. That’s the definition of hypocrisy.

Yes, those charges against Artemis were nonsense. It was his wife's trumped up BS. He ran out of money to defend himself and plead guilty. He's not perfect as none of us are but I don't believe he did that to his kids. He seems like a decent guy overall.
@@perfectioninpaint101 Speaking of Bob, Gene Odom claims Bob was involved in a car crash on the Buckman Bridge in Jax in ‘75. He says he “killed that girl “ in the crash. The only place on the internet that I can find this “story “ is from Gene on YT.
I even called the Jax paper, The Florida Times-Union and asked for the archives department to verify. They couldn’t find it.
He also said the bridge opened in’75. It opened in 1970. If this would have happened, don’t you think it would be common knowledge?
If I’m wrong I would be shocked.

If it was a rifle, yes it could have ricocheted off of something. Very very very slim chance. However, if he used a shotgun (which has not really been totally clarified...) then the possibility Artimus being shot goes way up! Because if he did fire over his head to some degree the type of shotgun shell could have spread out enough that he took 1 or 2 pellets. Depending everything on what (#) of shot was in the shotgun shell and how far away he was to him.
Now, if you got hit with a small size pellet from even a bird-shot shell, it would sting like hell! Wouldn't kill you but nevertheless, it would hurt and you could get someone to pick out the lead pretty easily if it didn't go through.
Now the guy that shot this gun (allegedly over his head lol), do you think he is going to admit that he actually shot him? Even to this day? Lol! No!
As many lawsuits have been generated over that crash and resulting drama of the band. It is my belief that the farmer probably did shoot (over his head to some extent) to warn them and he had his shotgun loaded with bird shot. Artimus probably caught one of the pellets off of that round. Simple.

If you look at 1979 footage of The Band at the CDB Volonteer Jam,You see a bare chested Artimus, Doesn't look like at all that he was shot..no scars,nothing to indicate he was shot

It adds fuel to the fire how some newspaper articles say he was not admitted but others include interviews from the hospital staff saying he was in emergency treatment! This was a hard one to do because of so many differing stories. But let's go find those records ourselves! haha! Thank you for being here and supporting the channel!
There must be some records of being tended to medically, I know of no survivor who came through without some sort of injury, even those in the back of the plane who didn't take the brunt of the impact.
I do think Artemis was shot whether it was accidental or not.
I hope that if and when you do an article on today's band that you will take consideration, that almost none of skynyrd's fans today we're fans back in the 70s. I for one think that it's despicable that these people today call themselves Lynyrd Skynyrd when the only thing they do is sing the original songs. A big part of today's fans don't even realize that the core members were killed in plane crash. They shouldn't even be allowed call themselves Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I know it's probably hard to find anything positive in this message but I do appreciate that you are stating the facts about what you research so far. I await your new story on today's band, as it seems you will be looking at it from a fresh perspective.

There is a fairly recent interview(2-3 years old) on the Musicians Hall of Fame TH-cam channel. It is Joe Chambers interviewing Artimus. The story is(per Artimus) that a strange lady ran up to him when he was at the memorial(where the plane crashed), and yelled out..."I'm the one who shot you!" She claimed to be the WIFE of the alleged shooter(who denied shooting him). Artimus also pointed to his left shoulder to show Joe where he was shot, but didn't take his shirt off to show a scar. Just thought you might want to check it out. I still don't know what to believe because Artimus tells some WILD stories!
He also claimed it was Buckshot, which would’ve destroyed his shoulder.
Artmimus has changed his story so many times' always different from what others have said' he has 0 proof' he lives in his own world of delusion of grandeur.
I saw a guy that was shot by a guy with a shotgun with buckshot from a distance. I was at the hospital and saw that he had pellet pellets in his face and even had a couple on his eyelids. I was staring him right in the face so there’s no doubt that he was shot and it didn’t blow his head off. Artemus is the only one that really knows what happened that night. Maybe after a plane crash that killed some of his friends and band members fogged his memory. The other band members have different memories and they are entitled to them. Otherwise it’s all conjecture and he said she said. Unless you’re talking to Gene Odom and then it’s the Gospel Truth and we all know that he has a photographic memory and remembers everything exactly how it happened at a time when he thought his life was probably going to end. I’m sure he took the time to tell the pilots that if they made it safely through the crash that he was going to kick their asses.
In all Fairness, the Entire Band was in severe Shock from the Crash. I have suffered from Shock myself.
The mind races and we bury parts of the story that were the most Traumatic in our mind.
So mabee Artimas is a Liar, or mabee he is still suffering from PTSD.
Humans dont survive from stuff like this unscathed mentally or emotionally.
Anyone know what Artimus was wearing? I've been hit by bird shot once and it does sting but it was from a long distance and so did not break past my shirt. I don't remember if it left a red mark but depending on what he was wearing and the distance, it could sting as he said and not get past his shirt or not punctured deep enough to require a doctors help to remove. My guess is the farmer shot form a good distance to warn before they got close so bird shot from a wide open choke could easily spread the shot pattern very wide and even if it was aimed above their head a few outliers from the pattern could have found Artimus. Number 8 shot is designed to kill birds, it doesn't take much to do that but when it comes to going through clothing, well I find it entirely possible he caught a pellet that stung pretty bad but wouldn't show up on a medical report.
There is a video right here on you tube of an interview with Artimus 4 days after the plane crash, October 24 1977 and he says he did not have a single broken bone. He also had nothing but praise for the local folks that helped rescue the victims and no mention of being shot.
Gene Odom tells the truth when he tells the story. A. Pyle wanted so badly to be the hero. But instead of getting people out...he went for help. Maybe he knew he couldn't get them out. No one blames him for that but to tell all the BS that he does...well that's not cool. This is why he was never ask to return to playing. Bandmates take that like Brothers....
I heard an interview with Artimus you have to hear . Hall of Fame Backstage . At around 28-30 minutes in he claims he was shot and who shot him . Love You pod cast and Your doing a Supreme Job . Awesome !!! Let me know what you find , Best Wishes and look forward to more Stories !!
Kenny Peden was a colleague. He just recently passed away. The old saying was, "if your on a plane, sit next to Kenny. You will be okay".

I remember that day very well. I was 14 years old living in Baton Rouge. I had seen Peter Frampton at LSU a couple months earlier, and was so excited to see LS... Just my opinion, If Pyle had been shot, and there was a ongoing investigation as to the cause of the shot, it would be unlikely that the shot would be immediately reported. As to reports that Pyle showed no GSW scarring, it is possible that it was a flesh wound, or grazing wound to the meaty part of the shoulder, and scarring was minimized in the emergency surgery. You are correct. That does appear to be Ronnie in the back seat of the vehicle, behind Pyle in the image you showed, therefore, definitely *NOT* _after_ the crash.

A shotgun shell holds pellets in a wadding which is like a small plastic cup. If Johnny shot over their heads, its possible that Artie could have been hit with the wadding, which would sting, but would cause little damage. But, I doubt that as well.
Or, could have been hit with a pellet or two from the scatter of the shot. Both very possible...impo

It was a rifle shot in the air according to the farmer and his then wife. Sound tech was the third who went for help. Artimus went back to the crash site and the other 2 were driven to the hospital. Apparently Artimus went to the hospital later. They were all heros yet the inconsistencies took away from that. 😮
@@jhonest2085 Are you confusing what a rifle is with what a shotgun is, or are you saying that someone said it was a rifle rather than a rifle. I have seen no indication that it was a rifle.
Yes he lied about getting shot , there is a video that straight tells you read the NTSB FAA reports that list the passengers and their various injuries where it list Artemus as not having been treated for gun shots, treated for minor injuries and released. And none of the survivors agree with him on anything has said about what happened on the plane just prior to the crash.

If there was so called , three people that walked up to the farmhouse, then why did Artemis portray in his movie (Street survivors) it was only him? He definitely would’ve remembered two other people with him to add this in the movie .
There are a lot of strange inconsistencies with him and with street survivors. There were definitely three people reported in the papers and in local interviews from that day 🧐

Artimus also said Cassie died in his arms. She died in Billy Powells arms. Artimus tried to paint himself a hero, when in reality he ran away like a scared rabbit. It’s too bad because I want to like Artimus, but his true character is a facade
According to the first responders, Artimus didn’t help anyone and they all said his account wasn’t true.
Billy said that, not Artimus. But it was a lie! Judy published the autopsy of Cassie and nothing Billy said on camera was true! Artimus called Billy out on his lie and that caused a split in the band. Billy refused to comment after it was proven that he had lied.
You want to know why he tried to look like a hero? You want to know why he was the very first to do an interview? This is coming from an inside source very close to the band at the time who toured with the regularly but was unable to start on that tour ( they were only less than a week in ).. and nobody ever brings this up...
They waited on that tarmac for an hour and a half with the engines running so the air conditioner can stay working in the fuselage... Waiting for Artemis. Nobody knows where he disappeared to.. you never told anybody he was going to be late. To this day if you bring it up he will not say anything to the fact or even admit to it. That is what happened. They would have had enough gas to make it even if the engine blew out. 1 engine caught fire and the pilot thought to dump the rest of the gas out of that engine he dumped the wrong engine. Had those pilots not been sitting there drinking and waiting for an hour and a half they would not have been so inebriated they would have been better to handle the emergency.... So imagine you're in that position you know you made them late they ran out of fuel because the engines got so hot waiting on the tarmac so of course you're going to look like you're the hero let's make it look like you saved the day somehow. He is directly at fault for this.

So 17 yr old Brenda Martin lied on other enterviews when she said Artimus went in the house and used her phone to call his family and let them know he was all right.
Also - can we just have a moment to appreciate how young these farmers were!! I look at 18 year old guys today and think holy cow - these guys were 18, 19, 20....doing hard labor and married and taking care of a home and a family! Hats off to all those guys and let's turn our boys back into men!!! teehee!
Bird shot from a shotgun, depending on the distance it was shot from, may not have had the energy to penetrate the skin or clothing. It would still hurt though.

The increased risk of pellet ricochet is another reason not to fire. In court Pyle could be challenged fairly by Moat defense counsel.

It was a special that came on v h 1 tv back in 2002 ! I watched it back then and I’ve made comments of the special which was called lynyrd skynyrd uncivil war / on TH-cam ! Hope this helps!

Realistically, a shotgun will spray. Thats one way to put it. So from a distance, its possible one fragment grazed him. It definitely wasnt shot over anyones head though. Just my opinion
I would bet your theory is correct! Same as mine. It was probably a shotgun with a bird shot round in it. He probably got stung by one of the pellets. Still would have stung like hell! Lol
NOBODY can understand the shock an airplane crash will have on u. UNLESS YOUVE LIVED THROUGH ONE. This may not be a lie and an actual memory he has caused from shock/trauma and his brain just coping with what happened. Fact is 10 ppl watching the same thing will see and interpret it differently.. that’s just how we are built. My 2 cents.

Artemus survived plane crashes ( multiple). He was also involved in a car crash by a drunk driver that broke his leg in 21 places. I’d say he’s had some traumatic experiences. If you live through one, consider yourself blessed. Surviving more than one plane crash? I won’t judge him.
I strait final destination the only flight I ever been on , I mean I flipped my lid, felt like superman lifting off , so cool , then I looked down , oh man , had no clue my greatest fear on earth was heights till that moment, my own buddy that was with me choked me out , I really lost it , ant never seen that side of me again , he was a bit touched now

Artemis has said on numerous occasions he went into the trailer or the house to call his wife to tell her there was a plane crash that he was OK.
Brenda has said that Arte came inside and used the phone. She jokes that Arte still owes her for the long distance call. Secondly, shotguns have beebees, not bullets.

Artemis pile was released immediately what about his interview talking about his ribs or stick it out I don’t know anything about medical procedures but it doesn’t seem to be they wouldn’t release him if his ribs were sticking out if he’s embellishing the story that much what do you believe I don’t know
No Artimus was not shot,he shot over his head
Artimus was infact shot but Jonny was not the one who shot him, it was the farmers wife that shot him in his shoulder. He thought it was Jonny but infact his wife confirmed this years later to Artimus

This gal doesn't seem to understand the difference between a shotgun and a rifle and the different Types of projectiles. There's quite a difference between a bullet and buckshot and how they behave.
I grew up in Crossville TN and Artimus Pyle grew up around Jamestown TN a few miles to the north of there...He still has many family members in that area and this is where Sgt Alvin C York was from...You can wiki him if you are not familiar. He was the WW1 hero that Gary Cooper played in the movie.
Artimus Pyle is a wildly intelligent individual that is what I would call "esoteric"....Very intellectual and goes to the beat of his own drum, (pardon the pun). I never heard anything bad about him in the 40 years that I lived in the area. I remember reading somewhere that he moved to Israel after the crash for some insight as to his life and afterlife. However, this kind of behavior was common with artists of that era. George Harrison dabbled in Hinduism and many more in odd beliefs.
He looked like a wild man with an 80 IQ during performances, but much like Ed King, he just wasn't a "simple man" like some in the band were...In reality had he lived, Ronnie Van Zant would now be a probably San Francisco liberal too....Listen to "Saturday Night Special" and you'll get a good gun control vibe of him as well, which was diametrically opposed to the people that bought and still buy those albums.
BTW...I have a newspapers.com subscription....It is the best money ever spent for research.

Oh, He was shot. Johnny Mote kept calling them escaped prisoners and said he pointed it at him and others say he shot over his head. You dont have to point a shotgun directly at something to hit it. Its called a shotguns "Spray Pattern" and if the barrel was sawn off this increases and you will hit everything in front of you. Its all right there... Mote said he was scared, so did his wife, he said he pointed the gun at him and shot it. And the Hospital saying He's fine and not injured but hes still having an emergency procedure. This is what a hospital should do if a crime has happened and leave the criminal part to the police to investigate. Artimus lied. Johnny Motte said he shot a warning shot in the air. He said he did not shoot Artimus. Notice Artimus never mentions the two other people that went with him for help. Why?
Artimus has never shown the so called scar of the shooting. he has never shown a copy of the injury from the hospital. Later Artimus changed his story to say Johnnys wife shot him. Why?
Every interview Pyle does, he makes himself to be more & more of a hero. Gets all choked up on cue, in every interview where he talks about the crash. Big phony, Gene Odom's recollection has never changed over the years. Would believe Gene over Pyle any day. I get a kick out of Pyles version that Ronnie came to Pyles seat and gave him a "hippie handshake" and told him he loved him. What a crock. In my opinion a mediocre drummer, but a great bullshitter.
I just tripped on to your channel. I have never heard of John Mote or Artimus being shot. I have watched every doc on the crash. But I agree with other's that I don't believe half of what Artimus says
Pyle was not shot. Pyle is just wanting to be some kind of hero.
I have to wonder if Mote fired a shotgun in the air what kind of shell was fired? If it was bird shot a pellet could have come down on Artimus already in shock from the crash and he thought he was shot. I have had pellets from bird shot come down on me in a dove field. No big deal they had lost velocity from the distance from which they were fired. Buck shot would be a whole different deal. Artimus would have been wounded severly it would seem from that.
It was a “SHOT” gun! Meaning that it was not just a single bullet that came out of the barrel! A shot gun shell shoots a bunch of tiny little BB’s out of it not just a single bullet. It’s intending to be used for bird hunting so it makes it easier to hit your target, usually flying. Also the little bb’s won’t travel a long distance like a regular rifle bullet would. Should someone shoot a rifle into the air that Single bullet can travel miles and distance and come down on somebody very far away. Shotgun shells with BBs only travel under distances in yards raining down slowly from Air another object slowing it down if It misses the intended flying bird target it will do less damage when it comes down and hits wherever does compared to directly being shot right at it from a short distance which can be very fatal. Artemis was shot by a shotgun it was a shot that was looming in the air came down and they call it being “peppered” in the shoulder by the bb’s. When I was a young man or a kid I should say we used to go bird hunting and we’d get bored out in the woods and shoot shotguns directly up in the air above us and let the BBs rain down on us I don’t recommend doing this is it can be very dangerous but we never were harmed because of the way we were shooting them directly straight up. Artimus Pyle was definitely shot by a shotgun peppering him in his shoulder. Hope that helps..!
If you want to know the total truth about the crash......ask Ronnies best friend from childhood who did survive the crash.Gene Odum.His stories never change and i believe are the truth.He said Artimus adds to his story for drama to make him look like the hero.
In an interview done with Pyle just 4 days after the crash, Pyle doesn’t even mention the “alleged” shooting. Two, Pyle admitted that he didn’t break any bones. Not even a fracture because he explained that he was x-rayed and they all confirmed that Pyle suffered very minor injuries and did not suffer a single broken bone.
So it’s safe to say that Pyle, 13:29 in attempts to come out of all this looking like a hero of sorts and that is very shameful if you ask me. I’ve seen all available interviews done by Pyle on this subject and i must say, good on TH-cam of Pyles account of the events of October 20th 1977 and the very first one he had done is his most credible one because he sticks to facts instead of trying to grandiose the events that took the lives of Steve Gains, his sister Cassie, Ronnie VanZant and Killpratrfck.

The article says he grabbed his shotgun (not a rifle) and then fired a shot over his head. Is it possible one of more of the bb's from the shotgun hit him? Sure, but even if he did get hit, it's more like getting hit with a bb gun. If he had been hit solid with the shotgun he would have been in pain and I'm sure they would have administered first aid at the house.

If the gun was a shotgun, it could have been loaded with birdshot, which doesn’t actually use a bullet but is packed with bb’s. If only one of those or just a few hit Artimus it would leave a very small wound. Does that clear things up or make them more complicated?;)
I've never heard that before . And im a Skynyrd Nation Fanatic. Artimus has always had a chip in his shoulder after the plane crash and the comments and statements I've seen or watched by him really rubs me the wrong way. And he brought stuff up about their past and if you wanna check anyone's past out just run his name when he was living in Florida and got Arrested for supposedly trying to have sex with a child and I never did find out what happened but that is something I watched on the news . I believe he's pissed because somehow he never could click with the other ones and go on with the band . Now I know they'll never be another Ronnie Van Zant or Stevie Gaines but I also know that I don't think Ronnie would be to happy with some of the rude comments about his baby brother Johnny trying to replace him . These guys I've seen twice and I was lucky enough to see Billy Powell and Leon together in Cincinnati in 96 and I saw Skynyrd in 2012 in Pikeville Kentucky and both times they kicked the living Hell out of every instrument on that stage.

Quite frankly, I am a LS fanatic and have modeled my guitar playing after Ed. Regardless of whom you believe, It always boils down to personal opinions. I find Artimus extremely likable and Gene not so much. The more I lean the more I admire and the more I also find to be disturbing about Ronny. He ruled with an iron fist and the nicest thing you could say is that he was an extremely talented bully.
Regardless of whether you feel Artimus or Gene lied, I feel that Gene is milking his connection to the band and the disaster for everything he can get and for that I find him to be cut from the same cloth as Ronnie’s wife.
Pyle first said that a bullet spun him around upon being shot. Why doesnt he just show his left shoulder to the media. Hes got to be lying. He refuses to finally lay the rumor to rest by simply showing us his shoulder ?

The answer that we really need is why was AP late to the plane... 1.5 hours late to a plane that had been running, using fuel and heating old engines...why the pilots were getting more and more inebriated?? You can't tell me that if that plane did not take off when it was supposed to but those engines would not have failed and they would have had plenty of gas even if that engine did fail those pilots would have been coherent enough to adjust and make the proper decisions instead of dumping the fuel out of the good engine... He caused it he was probably snorting a bag of cocaine somewhere it was really messed up on it hence the reason why he was able to get out of the woods and get to that house. Probably didn't want to go to the hospital didn't want them to see or take blood... Was the first to do an interview and I'm sure it was a race out of guilt and shame... They kept him out of the band for that unspoken reason.

I hear lots of stories about the band. Lots of people are down on Artemus for supposedly being a liar. But you don’t hear much about what a bully Ronnie was and how he treated some band mates. He slashed Gary’s wrists and threatened Ed King which was his last straw, leaving the band. Or how Allen Collins was a habitual drunk or drugged driver and lost his license multiple times. And crashed which resulted in a girls death. Gene Odom has lots of stories but never mentions anything negative about Ronnie. Maybe because he’s still making money off the band. No one in the band was perfect. I don’t know if Artemus lied about the gunshot. I’m just happy that I grew up listening to their music. I was devastated by the plane crash and still think about it every day. How about we just enjoy their music and let a (multiple) plane crash survivor live his life in peace.
