Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Artimus Pyle Honors Bandmates 45 Years After Tragic Plane Crash

  • In October of ‘77, legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame drummer Artimus Pyle and his band Lynyrd Skynyrd boarded a plane on their way to a show that would have a fateful ending. Just a few miles from their destination, the plane, short on fuel, made an emergency landing that took the lives of six people, including founder and creative visionary Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist and co-writer Steve Gaines, and his sister, backup singer, Cassie Gaines. Forty-five years later, the man that gave Skynyrd that powerful and distinctive double bass drumming sound, Artimus Pyle, joined us at the LifeMinute studios to reminisce about his bandmates and tell us how he chooses to honor them today. He continues to play the music of Lynyrd Skynyrd with his Artimus Pyle Band and has written the film Street Survivors: The True Story of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash to set the record straight on the events that happened. He’s also got a new album, Artimus Pyle And The Artimus Pyle Band Honors Ronnie Van Zant And Lynyrd Skynyrd, that’s due out next year-available for pre-order now at artimuspyleband.com.

I'm a 72year old Vietnam 🇻🇳 Era veteran who feels lucky to have survived until now given how this country has treated my generation for doing what we were raised and taught was our duty and answered Uncle Sam's call that he needed our help in this country's time of need and after 50years plus ➕ worth of disrespect I'll admit that I've wished that I could go back and change the past so that the Vietnam 🇻🇳 war never happened but being as realistic as possible I'm hoping that some day my generation of veterans will be treated like other generations before and after mine

ALL IS FATED, Jeff. As JC said: "Indeed, even the hairs on your head are numbered." I was in the US Navy (1976-1981) in Norfolk Virginia, and two shipmate friends of mine traveled to see what would be Lynyrd Skynyrd's last concert. But I unfortunately missed it. And another friend of mine, a neighbor who lived directly behind my childhood home, was a friend of Steve Gaines. Thomas ("Artimus") Pyle signed a drum cymbal for me in 2012 when he appeared at a tiny club near my tiny hometown.
My mother came from an immigrant Italian family of musicians. And I sang in a band for a while.
I am a prophet of GOD; the prophesied return of the biblical prophet Elijah. And GOD has connected me to the music again and again over the years, so that should tell us something. It brings allot of joy to my heart, but then as I realize the tragic experiences they had and endured, but are now all gone and how time has flown by, it kinda bums me out. But I can still get up and do my thing with a slower but more peaceful, easy feeling. May the good Lord always, always bless these guy for all they have given us, still to this day.🙁😢🙂

Hey Southern Man, on the flip side I’m a Yankee and I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd for my only time in Oakland, CA on what was called Day on the Green in early July that year.
    Peter Frampton
headlined, LS, Outlaws is all I recall. Lynyrd Skynyrd was the band that day with barefoot Ronnie, his trademark hat, and bottle of Jack. I can still play their music and hear it like the first time, and unlike some of those bands I loved so much back then. I was just shy of my 16th birthday. I’m 61 now. I recall the heartbreak in October learning of that Ill-fated flight.
I’m glad LS is iconic and I’m glad they have a great legacy.
I’ve spoken with Gene Odom, childhood friend of Ronnie’s, body guard and head of security then, and found him to be an upstanding Southern Man. He was a great influence on Ronnie, coming from his experience, family upbringing, and military background. He was beginning to move Ronnie in a different direction before tragedy struck. With more time, who knows what might have come.

I was 12 I loved there music then and I love playing it to this day my children love it too,who listen to me learning and playing these iconic songs , they lived the dream every kid who picks up a instrument would have loved to achieve.I think Ronny’s driven personality that got them were they are allso may have contributed to there end insisting on going on that plane , but he achieved more then most could in 10 live times ❤❤

I was in the US Navy (1976-1981) in Norfolk Virginia, and two shipmate friends of mine traveled to see what would be Lynyrd Skynyrd's last concert. But I unfortunately missed it. And another friend of mine, a neighbor who lived directly behind my childhood home, was a friend of Steve Gaines. I sang in a band for a while. And I am a prophet of GOD; the prophesied return of the biblical prophet Elijah. My mother came from an immigrant Italian family of musicians. And GOD has connected me to the music again and again over the years, so that should tell us something. Through me, all mysteries have been revealed and published. Click and ye shall find. (I correspond only through my sites.)

Miraculously after multiple Encores, A Miracle Happened and LYNYRD SKYNYRD Shows up with a Vengence ! The Brits were so pissed off they refused to play in the 'ol USA for the next 25 Years !

The best three American rock bands ever, in my humble opinion, were The Allman Brother's Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and Lynyrd Skynyrd (I consider The Grateful Dead and The Eagles as contenders). All three have roots in Florida, not L.A. or Nashville, which I find interesting. I'm not able to comment on the film as I haven't seen it yet. I think Skynyrd was on the cusp of their second rise and I say this feeling they really had not stumbled or lost any ground, but with Steve Gaines in the fold I believe it is entirely possible they were fully revitalized and ready to match their previous highs. There were those who faulted the post reunion concerts morphing into annual tours again, but that group which often included at least two or three original members acquitted themselves by their respect for the music and fans. And they kept fans coming. That underscores the popularity of the music itself. Artimus really got kudos for mentioning Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, John Bonham, and Keith Moon as stellar drummers. BTW, he also mentioned Chad Smith who I've recently came to realize is one of the all-time drummer greats. A very interesting interview.

Sad thing about this all is that NO ONE mentions RVZ as a great songwriter, which he was. Listen to any LS song...any.

There are so many different stories from different members of what really happened. It's ashamed that these guys couldnt settle their differences now that Artimus is the one left. So many accusations and different stories. Artimus movie street survivors almost paints him like a super hero. Gary downplayed artimus rescue efforts. Billy Powell said some things that Artimus said that were untrue. Just ashamed that all these things these guys went through together that they couldn't settle their differences.
