Carrera Digital 132 Magnet vs No Magnet

  • Today I take the Carrera 132 Digital Porsche 911 RSR Pink Pig back on track.
    I run the car with no magnets and see what kind of pace I can get out of the car.
    I then add some Paul Gage Urethane Tire to the equation and see how much faster I can get the car around the track.
    Finally we throw the magnets back into the car and set the quickest time so far!
    I personally don’t have a favourite when it comes to Mag or No Mag racing. They’re both extremely fun and both challenging in their own ways. For sure No Mag requires a little more effort but it’s fun having to really control the car and feather the throttle.
    Let me know what style of racing you prefer!

    Nice little comparison there. Like you say, each to their own, but for me it's always going to be magless racing that wins. You won't beat a magnet lap time, but it's a much more fun and rewarding experience, and you get to notice the individual characteristics of each car (and realise how bad most stock tires are!).

      Yeah everyone has their own preference, but I agree. I’m starting to really like non-mag, you just get a good feeling when you’re able to execute a great lap with a non-mag setup. Yes to the stock tires comment 😂 thanks for watching!

    Another way to get into non mag without diving into the deep end is start by removing the rear magnet only.Once you get used to that then remove the middle magnet 🧲

    Good on you for trying Non Magnet. I run all my D132 cars non magnet with Paul Gage PGT tyres.
    I also remove the guide springs for more realistic handling as the guide spring somewhat reduces sliding and the characteristics of a slide...
    Also, I use Smart Race so I can fine tune all my classic D132 cars to be capable of the same lap time consistently. So the power and brake settings vary from 5-30% brakes and 30-40% power.
    Some might say it's slow, but so far with 3 drivers it gave fantastic, close realistic racing and is way easier on the cars. Especially high speed rear enders, when one driver stops to marshal a de slotted car...

    Hi!
    I prefer without magnets, but with better tires, Carrera's are not very good.
    With 124 cars, I remove all the magnets.
    With 132 cars, I initially run without the rear magnet, now I remove all magnets.
    Driving fun increases exponentially!
    I use urethane tires for the 124s (Ortmann) and rubber tires for the 132s (PRS).

      Hi Antonio, yeah tire upgrades are almost a must without mag. At least on the Carrera Track. Yeah I’m going to try starting out with removing the rear on some of the cars like you mentioned. Thanks for watching!

      @@MPSlotCar I'm a rank novice at slot racing,but I have found that carrera tires can vary.....the stock tires on my Ford GT and 911 RSR are in a perpetual slide/spin mode. They can spin out on the straight away even,,,,,,,,,,,,then I just got the Bill Thompson Cheetah with taller tires front and rear and right away its hooked up pretty decent....Ive got silicone tires on the GT now and they stick nicely.....The Cheetah for some reason just launches off corners and down straights.......I like it. Its a real short wheelbase and feels lighter than my other cars,....Ive got some sticky tires from Germany to try on the Cheetah...........I raced motorcycles for years,and have always ridden them,any kind of racing attracts me.

    Thanks for the video, Massimo. I've began my life without magents about thirty-six hours ago and have felt like I'm walking on ice while wearing tap shoes. The experimentation is a lot of fun so far even though I"m pretty sure my son thinks I'm nuts.

    I'm actually doing the same experiments on my track (check my channel) I found there's a lot of variables: 1. Track surface - Running no magnets on the stock plastic was like ice skating. After I painted the track with flat housepaint, the difference between magnets and no magnets became limited to the curves. 2. Speed settings and braking settings - I found with no magnets you really need to tune the braking - generally harder - to get the car to behave in a predictable fashion. I also found that reducing the top speed improved lap time by giving me more throw on the controller for fine-grained input. 3. No magnets vs center magnets - Compared to upscale slot car brands, Carrera cars seem to want the center magnet to keep the guide in the rail. I found the cars were more predictable with the center magnet still installed. Currently on my painted track, I can come within 2-3 tenths of a second of my magnet times at the same speed setting. - I will say that your track is more technical, which will definitely affect the average car speed at any point on the track. I haven't gone the tire route yet, but I can see it's something you need to get performance out of the cars.

    I recommend to drive without magnets all the time, for me only without it. As you had said, you need to develop a feeling for the car and you have more input on braking points and acceleration. Thriving tires will get you more grip as well. And last, by adding weights to the car you will increase the downforce which results in higher curve speed and faster track time. I put an average of about 20-30 grams of weight in my cars.

    No magnets all day every day. Had a Polistil set in the 70's that consisted of a black JPS lotus and a six wheeled Tyrell Elf and the cars were a lot slower but would still slide about. The racing was better as you could see the cars squirm and the racing was very very close. We got that skilled we would draw up along side the other car and give a squirt of power mid corner in just the right spot and it would knock the other car out of its slot...... Happy Days. If you have all those magnets and super sticky tyres you may as well have a train set but that's just my opinion.

    What Level did you have your track set at? Power Level that is. I had to stop Magnet racing, it was inanely fast and the crashes were epic LOL, my track is 85 feet and we were down to 4.6 seconds with magnets. Without we are around 6 to 8 seconds, I keep the track power on 6-8 depending on skill levels

    • @MPSlotCar
      @MPSlotCar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John, I had it set to 10. Ideally I should’ve dialled the speed down for non-Mag running. I just max them out to see what they got for ultimate lap time. But for actual racing I typically run the cars around 4-6 power. Which really aids controlling the non-Mag cars. Non-Mag is fairly new to me but I’m really enjoying it, just need a little more practice to get these times down a little more! Your times are fairly close/competitive 🙌🏻 Haha yeah the crashes are pretty spectacular/insane on full power 😂

    • @MPSlotCar
      @MPSlotCar  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there, so it seems like you’ve addressed the tires and even added weight which is good. What kind of tires are you using? For some cars, like me with the DTMs I have some issues I take slow and as I get into a rhythm I start trying to push the limits a little more and let off later and later into the corners until I find the limits of the particular car.

    I definitely prefer no magnets for racing at home, while there’s an added challenge it’s much more beginner friendly if your racing with people that are new to the hobby, sure they might crash either way but at least it won’t be at supersonic speeds that tear your wings apart 😅
