Wonderful video. Thank you for taking the time to explain everything. I see this as a very unbiased video where the facts are given to you and then a person gets to decide what fits their situation best. I think that is what most people new to the hobby are looking for. You are putting good information out there. Thanks again.

Good info for those looking to getting into the hobby. I get the question "what set should I get" regularly. My answer is never clear because it is this: "If you have the space, go with Carrera, UNLESS you really want a better selection of American sports and muscle cars, go with Scalextric, HOWEVER if you really, really, really want a Ferrari, then then Carrera is your only choice. If you do go with Scalextric or Policar, if you have the opportunity to run 1/24 at some other track, DON'T, because you'll immediately regret your decision to not have gone with Carrera.

Isn't it easy to swap chips so you can run whatever cars on whatever track?

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@jesot Depending on the model of the car and/or the chip, some modification of the chassis or re-wiring might be necessary. There are some simple direct drop-in chips available but from what I've seen they are spendy (just about doubles the price of the car). So, it is true that you can chip just about any car to run on any track, it's just not always easy or cheap.

People say carrera cars will run on scalextric circuit but they can't.
You move the throttle, the cars won't move. Carrera cars run on current not volts.
Scalextric cars run on volts not current.
After a time delay the Carrera cars take off but stop running cause they consumed most of the current. They won't move until the current power has built up enough to power the cars.
      They're electrically polar opposites.
Carrera is a free flowing style of racing.
Scalextric is scaled down driving style.
Matchbox powertrack was designed for wheelspins and 360 degree turns and it was perfect for children.
Get them to make that style of racing product again.
Those cars survived a 20 year thrashing.

I had a tiny little Smokey and the bandit track when I was a kid. It was my most used toy. It was only a figure of eight with tiny cars but it had a bridge which tipped over and the cars would jump off and land perfectly all the time. That was all I needed. I wish I could find another set even now

Great video Dave! I met you at Niagara Hobby and I think at Ace Hobby, both unfortunately closed. I raced on all track except Policar, and can’t wait to! I took a 7 year break from 1/32 as I set up a HO layout in a spare bedroom. I saw the new Scalextric offerings and ordered a Digital ARC PRO platinum GTset. Mainly to have some living room racing that can be up and down in hours. Then you mentioned Policar...I’ll be getting a set soon! Ps...you should mention the shorts between the sport track when body screws fall in the slots. Many blown fuses!

Glad I watched this video bought a scalextric Australian Bathurst legends set very happy with it then I purchased the Australian highway patrol set, much to everyone's "as to why not just get extension sets or individual pieces ",well you are spot on saved plenty of coin got spare power base two spare hand controlers aswell as two great cars worked out so much better now I've got a huge race way ,and all your points onthe track it self are spot on I've added borders fencing and a hairpin extension set still needing more borders though, cars will stay on track if you true the tires and buff them, then clean them aswell, and keeping track dust and debris free is also very helpful in maintaining traction its a complete analog set I now have 8 cars will soon build a table for the track and continue to grow my collection, thanks for the tips.

Thanks for the great video. I have been on a Scalextric system since 1968 and have always been a Scaley fanboy. I have more than 50 years of tracks, which I have converted to be digital compatible (basically, deepening the depth of the slot on the classic track). While I would never want to let go of my classic gems (like the Goodwood chicane), if I was to start today on digital, I would go with Carrera as their lane changers are simply awesome. I have some Policar stuff that I bought over the years; but, frankly, the quality was very poor. That is probably much improved these days also. Thanks again.

Being new again to the slot cars and introducing them to my family, I'm glad I didn't watch this video before deciding on a brand. I found SCX WOS systems online both new and used for a third of the price as Carrera, with a ton of more features all ready included. Yes I know they went out of business after the launch of WOS and are trying to make up with the ( new company) Advance. The problem with Carrera is its way too expensive to start with and worse when try to expand. I hope SCX gets its sh!t together because I think the WOS system is by far the most fun with the only downside being no bluetooth which means no management system. John

My son bought me the Digital Scalextric Police Chase set a few years ago. Overall nice! My observations: The R1 hairpins are too tight for practical racing; I wish Scalextric had banks turns like Carrera; The problem with a digital set is analog cars need to be digitized (some can, some can’t); You need to buy the advanced power control on Scalextric to run analog cars that are non-Scalextric. It's been awhile, but it looks like 1:43 is no longer a thing. I only have one basic set. Would it be worthwhile looking for stuff or move on to 1:32? Really like the idea of digital.
Assuming I go 1:32 digital. Do the basic analog track work with the digital set? Seems like you get a lot of stuff in the sets. Realize the analog cars won't have the digital capabilities.
    Thanks!

    • @SlotCarNewsOfficial
      @SlotCarNewsOfficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

So basic pieces will work on any set, yes. It's only the "digital" pieces that should only be used on a digital set. But straights and curves will work on any set. a set is the most economical way to start.and it's the most economical way to add to a layout. so if you're going to start with digital 1/32 you should buy a set based on whether you like the cars in that set and then add to it.

I was going to buy a Policar track, but they are limited in availability, especially in Canada where I live. Scalextrik is just toy grade in my opinion and I don't want digital, so I went with Carrera Evolution analog set and it was cheaper to get an expanded layout that I like by Carrera than it was by Policar. I would prefer the Policar due to the better surface, but I don't like the obvious lines between the track pieces. Carrera and Scalextrik cars are too toy-like for me so the cars in the set have no bearing on the choice for me. It was a difficult choice that ultimately came down to availability and long term upgrading price.

Yes the cars are as good as any other homeset car from either Carrera or Scalextric. They have all the flat curves to make up to 8 lanes wide and all the straights you need. They don't have any banked pieces. The Policar track is on the same quality as Carrera for fitting together tightly as I mentioned and ALL the molds for the track pieces are brand new so that's something that they have that no other company can say. ALL the track pieces are coming from brand new molds, not molds years old. They have border for outside and inside for each piece too.

Dave. I like your videos. You seem to be a true ambassador of the hobby. It seems like this video is targeted to parents and budget conscious people. For me the number one consideration was digital and the lane changes, and the pit stops. Carrera is expensive and eats real estate for breakfast, but I'd consider no other. I think leaving out the digital does a little disservice to the video although I understand you wanting to keep it analog for the price and better apples to apples comparisons.

I switched from scalextric digital to carrera digital. With faster cars from slot it, carrera is much better. On scalextric they just fly of. I also prefer the wider track on carrera in the corners. On scalextric the cars are so close, that often the inner car pushes the outher car of.

You can get boarders for Scalextric, the issue with Scalextric cars is they don't make good cars that you can race without magnets. You can race other brands on Scalextric track though. Scalextric track can bend out of shape so not good for kids.

I see that this video is a year old.
I'm a beginner in this hobby, so please don't chop my head off!
It's 2022 now, and I have decided to build a LARGE Carrera track.
I feel better about choosing Carrera, after watching this.
What I can't seem to find, are compatibility answers about Carrera "digital" track, and SCX "digital" cars?
Will an SCX digital car, lane-change on a Carrera track?
Does it need a special chip?

    • @SlotCarNewsOfficial
      @SlotCarNewsOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Tony! Thanks for watching.
Each digital system is specific to each system. Carrera digital cars only run on Carrera digital track, SCX is the same and so is Scalextric.
To run a Scalextric car on a Carrera digital channel you must put a digital chip inside that works in a Scalextric car on that Carrrera digital system.
So if you make a Carrera digital track and you want to run ANY other brand of cars you need to install a Carrera digital chip or chip that's made by another company to work on Carrera digital.
Scalextric for example does not make a chip to work on Carrera digital, same for Carrera to Scalextric and SCX too... so once you buy any brand of DIGITAL track you're limited until you find an aftermarket chip that will allow you to put it inside another brand's cars.

      @@SlotCarNewsOfficialHEY!
1st things first, THANKS for the QUICK response.
      Great video as well.
Guys like you Diamonds in this hobby.
I was afraid of that you were going to say what you did.
It appears that Carrera makes it easy to convert "their" Analog cars to digital?
I made my decision a while back, and I'm focusing on digital Carrera.
I just need-to stop buying cars, and focus more on the track, lol.
      I thought I only had around 30-35 cars? It's closer to 130 now😳
I always look for Carrera digital cars, or at least DPR.
      Mixing brands will involve soldering.
Soldering tiny parts isn't my favorite thing to do, but I can.
I always see, and hear about "Carson" chips, but I don't know anything about them, or the entire process?
      I just bought a really cool-looking Revelle/ Monogram #65 Corvette Gran Sport(Nassau Blue).
Can it be chipped, or is that a dumb idea?
I buy cars I like, and lately "I have" been focusing on Carrera digital cars(which was part of your advise) but if something grabs me, I'll usually try-to buy it, regardless of what it is.
I couldn't pass on that Corvette.
I have different scale cars/tracks, but a big Carrera digital setup seems like more fun! They seem to have a bazillion accessories for their systems? You can finally get a digital GT40 now!
I'm contemplating buying this digital SCX, but as clean as it is, it just seems like a waste to re-chip it?
Those chips are around 40ish.......then you have-to install them.
