Oh, I’ve been looking forward to this mullet review I knew you will upload once done. Once again, a great review! And thanks so much for sharing the experience including getting the W in that enduro race. So happy for you @BikeHombre. You rock!
catching the dub on a hardtail is pretty sick! i'm also jealous of the trails you guys have in socal, it looks like there's a lot more party trails than we see here in norcal.
Yeah, the trails down here in So Cal are pretty awesome and are made for ripping. Funny part is that a lot of people I know who ride down here want to ride NorCal trails more. Thanks!
Good stuff! I have a Marin San Quentin 3 27.5 and the stack has always felt way to low for me, and always wish it had more travel in the fork. Definitely going to give the mullet a try. Been riding a FS for a couple months and not liking it as much as a HT. It’s just not as much fun for me
I built by mmmbop on a 29er 140 fork so it is essentially a 27.5 fork at 160 as I understand it. I like my stack to feel higher, so this alowed me to keep the spacers to a sane amount. I like a 30mm bar but a 40mm bar was a bit much, wonky. Always wanted to try it factory stock fork height because I like the mullet too. Anyway my findings are identical, I like my 27.5 mullet with a 29er 140 fork(27.5 160). I like just throwing a 29er front tire on. Everything you say spot on, so much so that no I wouldn’t try it any other. I can run it 27.5 or mullet and get a great ride. The difference between these two fork lengths is 10mm give or take. If I changed, 27.5 ride would seem lower and l’d want more stack, the mullet would seem good but loose a little. I’ve done a lot of changing around hardtail parts to find some sweet spots. I think you have found one, even if you had a garage full of parts and forks I wouldn’t switch anything out on this one. It’s too hard to find this zone! Your video is top notch, your analysis left no stone unturned
From everyone that I've talked to who've tried a mullet on their hardtail, they agree that it's the way to go. Makes me wonder if Ragley, and other bike companies, should start making aggressive mullet hardtails. Thank you for the comment!
Great video. I have the Santa Cruz Chameleon and just recently bought a 27.5 wheel set to run it as a Mullet. I have to say I might keep it as a Mullet setup. I really noticed the difference in the tight downhill switchbacks. The back end seems to come around effortlessly. I surf to, and I described the feeling like this. A 29'r front and back is like riding a longboard, a mullet setup is like riding a shortboard. The mullet is snappier and seems to corner a lot better. Like you, the climbing characteristics were not very noticeable, but there some positive gains there. I'm glad I did this and now I know I have options. Keep the rubber side down! Question to any of you, do you recommend moving the adjustable chainstays back, forward or keep them neutral? Thanks.
I’m riding a 2020 blue pig same color and it rips the DH like ur saying. I have run 2.8 tires no prob with Cush core down to the 2.5 /2.4 front and rear tire combo it came with. I’m wondering if the already short reach became shorter with the mullet set up? Also , I’m interested in getting the new MMBOP frame with new geo with 1 degree steeper seat tube angle and 10 mm increase in reach. I’m 56 and have only ridden hard tails since 1985. Keep ripping
Great video! I get tempted! I have a fox 36 150 on my other bike. Should just try it…. I’m also 5’10 and went for medium. Great decision I think. So playful and fun…
Thanks for making this video. I've been pondering building up a mullet version of one of these as well. Looks great. Did you stick with the 160 mm fork when you got another one?
I stayed with the 160mm fork when I bought the permanent setup. I probably gave up a little climbing ability on steep climbs, but the bike just rips on the downhills. If you decide to convert to a mullet, let me know how you like it. Thank you for the comment!
Thank you for the comment! Here's a quick run down of the current components on the bike. - Rockshox Lyrik Select fork (160mm) - Shimano SLX 11-speed drivetrain (46 tooth) - Shimano SLX Brakes (180mm rotors) - Crankbrothers Synthesis Front Wheel - Nukeproof Horizon V2 Rear Wheel - Maxxis DHFs (front/rear) w/Maxxterra compound and Exo Casing - 2.5" width - Brand X dropper - Ragley stem and saddle - Nukeproof Sam Hill Handlebars (780mm width/38mm rise)
What wheelset you have on this bike? And it seems you changed the stem too. I am hoping to updgrade my stock wheelset, handlebar and stem for enduro races. Any suggestions? Thanks for great content.
The front wheel is a Crankbrothers Synthesis and the rear wheel is a Nukeproof Horizon V2. The stem is a 50mm Ragley stem and the bars are Nukeproof Sam Hill Riser 38mm. For enduro racing recommend strong wheels and a comfortable cockpit. I like the front of my bikes to be on the higher side, so that's why I chose the riser bars. Also, for racing I recommend bars that dampen the vibrations really well, just because an enduro race is hard enough, but adding in the hardtail element means you're going to need any comfort relief you can get. Thank you for the comment and if you do get some races in let me know how you enjoyed it!
Did the same with my chromag stylus and feel exactly the way you do

Thank you Jerry for watching and commenting, I really do appreciate it!
Nice drone shots! 😉
I also went mullet on my hardtail and haven't gone back!
Drone shots were sick man! Mullet is the way to go; I might try to have all my future bikes only be mullets.

Nice, mullet setup for my Ragley Big Wig next 😆
That would be awesome! If you do decide to mullet out your Big Wig, let me know how you like it.

I'm thinking of doing this with my Marley and 140mm 29er fork, make up for the low stack height.
I think you'll really like it. If you do let me know how it rides.

@@BikeHombre I will let you know! What tire width are you running front and back?
I’m running a 2.5” width on both the front and rear
Nice

Good to hear it worked so well! What fork offset does your 29er fork have, 44 or 51?
I decided to go with a 51mm offset
What is your wheel setup when you committed to keeping it as a mullet.
I'm running a Crankbrothers Alloy Synthesis Enduro wheel in the front and a Nukeproof Horizon V2 in the rear.
Nice riding and video! Where can I find a bike check? Curious about tires/casing you run. Thanks.

What’s is your fork offset?
I’m running a 51mm offset.
YES A SQUIRREL DID CROSS THE TRAIL AT 3:10
Haha, yep that little guy cooking across the trail!
