Roger, love the videos. One question I have is when you are working with pvc on a horizontal ( or vertical) run in this video I see for instance you use a sureband on the one side and on the other end your are going right into the hub of the wye clean out. How do you get enough clearance to go into the hub and only use one sure band. And not two. I sometimes have trouble with getting the proper fit and not having a gap on one side of the pipe. Maybe you could a do a video on pipe clearance. I hope you understand my question and look forward to your response. Thank you for your time
@Roger Wakefield why not use a tee? Why 2 wye's? Here in Oklahoma (BOOMER SOONER) we use tees and schedule 40 nothing less I'll be honest I hate it when guys like you use wye's for c/os
@Top Dead Center yes that's plumber language it's technically called a sanitary tee but using 2 wye's in Oklahoma isn't code it has to be a sanitary tee aka 2-way cleanout
@Top Dead Center I'll be damned..... My boss used to do plumbing in Vegas back in the day.. I like watching plumbing videos because I like to know what's code in other states but ya man straight up here we use San ts we have to use a no hub if we put a new cleanout in. We have to use a saddle tee and silicone when we do our taps here as well. On water heaters if theirs no drain for the pan we have to install a pan alarm (which is totally new here)
Everyone complaining he takes too long, I think he's just taking his time to show people his way of doing and giving time to explain a little. Better than rushing thru and not being able to see his work.
Skilled tradesmen will take there time and think things through.. Could have done it right in 45 minutes... Sure... But can he guarantee that work for years... Nope.... When I worked underground water and sewer we always rounded down 15 minutes when charging people... It allowed us time to double and triple check things with out gouging are prices... Charging was always done in 15 minute intervals...

Mario Alvarado Bay Area municipalities have a lot of “My kid needs a job” hires, which leads to bad inspections, or inspectors with no experience and a major power trip. I see it plenty in my service area.
The whole letters thing: great approach; never thought of that. I did electrical construction back in the day and my boss had us put wall plates on with the screws going vertical. Is a nice touch that the homeowner (or inspector) showed that you paid attention to even the smallest detail (plus it looks totally rad). I admit I haven't done this with PVC but you bet I am going to start. Thanks for the tip, Mr Roger.

I am a drain tech and if I pulled up to a house that had a cleanout installed like this, I would be so happy. I usually cut 50 bucks off the service when the customers sewer has this configuration. It seems like every time there is a one way clean out it goes the wrong direction. When the cleanout has one of those two-way fittings the blockage is down stream, the riser is full and it's so deep that I have no way of telling which way the cable is going. Cutting the risers off so that the clean out body is above grade is also a great thing. I don't know many times I have had to run vents etc. because the clean out were buried or under snow. Why is your right hand so much stronger than your left? Never mind...Thanks for the vid!
For everyone that loves straight tee or double eye clean outs. I was a drain cleaning professional for a while, a single tee or double wye cleanout sucks when you need to clean a drain and it’s full to the brim. Hard to tell if the cable is going out to the street or back Into the house. And those cables will break toilets if not careful.
I’ve used many good trade practices roger has demonstrated on this yt channel . They have have helped ten fold. Inspecters always compliments work and appreciates the little things . Thanks Rodger for helping us become better Plumbers and tradesmen. Much respect
Here in Germany we have mostly PVC or Cast Iron Pipes, at least for buried sewage pipes. The PVC is not glued but comes with pre-installed rubber gaskets in the sleeves, so you just push them together. And they are orange-brown. The community sewage pipe is mostly made from PE nowadays. Indoors the classic way is the gray HT-Pipe, which is made from polypropylene and can withstand temperatures up to 200°F/95°C.
If Rogers guys used that much primer, he would have a Monday morning meeting about how we are going thru primer too fast and our overhead is out of control 😂
Nha. Every job is priced with glue and primer in the bid. If you’re not charging for it in every job, you’re losing money. Hate to see what you’d have to say about dumping primer and glue right onto the pipe in a high water location.
Love the video. I'm in southern California and residential sewer are 99% ABS before the clay transition. And Roger is correct always apply the glue while the primer is still wet.
I've never seen so much primer and glue used. I like it. It seems everyone else does a quick swipe and fits it together. I bet yours ain't EVER coming apart.

If you tap the lid for the pvc primer/glue with something hard ( I usually use the base of the other can) it’ll open up nice and easy and you won’t have to use channel locks

Another pro tip is to tape your cans of primer and glue together so they're easier to carry around. It's all the little things that can make a big difference to your efficiency and quality.
Flawless Roger. At one point I was saying "wait, you're going to glue that clean out before you drop that riser?" And... yes you did. Looks clean. No purple lightning. Letters all facing the same way and visible from inspector point of view. Nice.
theyre nice for quickly feeding your machine a certain direction, but the down side is most cases you cant see the blockage clear while on the machine or see your progress while rooting, jetting etc.

Well in my line of work my dad taught me well in Irrigation Sprinkler systems clean work is the best work and I've learned plumbing from my dad also amazing work man cleaning the burrs off pipe, and you don't slop on primer its like watching my own dad work
We use mostly abs but I've used pvc here in California especially on long sewerlines due the the fact that pvc is more ridged then abs and I'm fighting for 1/4 per ft. We also can use pvc in commercial. I like the fact that you debured pipe so the glue actually gets in the joint
Never see two 3 in combos used like that we have a two way clean out tee that we use. But hell ya you still got in I always liked when my boss came out to the jobs. Lol
My area doesn’t use double combos really either. Lots of 2 way tees, and unfortunately lots of old school Kelley cleanouts that were popular during the 70s and 80s here.
Actually two combos is the proper way to install a two way clean out because when it comes a time to snake that mainline the cable has a natural way to feed down the proper direction in which he/she is trying to cable snake the mainline. A two way clean out fitting is an approved fitting but not necessarily the better application to use for a proper mainline in ground sewer two way clean out.
EC L my reasoning against double cleanouts is the same as my reasoning against Kelley cleanouts. Any drain cleaner worth their gloves should be able to feed the snake any direction without the other stuff

I like a quality job done vs. A time crunch and mess ups because of the time crunch. I really belive in making sure everything is good and time well spent. Quality is important as is attention to detail or you'll be back there fixing it for free when it breaks. Love ya Roger.
New construction plumber from Sacramento, CA here. We use sched 40 pvc for undergrounds only. Everything above is ABS, then to cast iron. Code here dictates buildings above 2 levels require cast on the third and up
You are pure expert, I learn so much from your videos... I just personally think you use too much primer, just from my experience I think a couple rounds with prime (just enough to get a couple layers on) and lots of glue is better than a lot of primer .
Hey Roger, Been working on the house I bought cheap a couple years ago, 18K in 2021... that has needed some work but finally getting to the point where I can start some projects. Put in a cleanout like this along with a 2" drain line that goes to what will be my outdoor cooking area. Kinda glad I did since I found that the 4" PVC they put in had a section with pretty much ZERO glue and likely was done by a plumber who told his apprentice to just put the cleaner on all the fittings in the truck so he wasn't standing around for an hour doing nothing. Ever heard of that one? Have your apprentice put cleaner on the stuff weeks or months in advance before using it, seems like that would defeat the purpose IMHO. I suspect the previous cleanout that was put in right next to the house is likely going to be the "it can be used both ways" style but it will eventually end up being changed as it will probably be under the porch when I am done but extended so it can be accessed if needed. Also going to put a cleanout through the foundation near the front of the house for a easy way to clean out the line that way as well if needed though what I will run there is only going to be 3" pvc. Anyway working on stuff is a labor of love to say the least but it's the only way to get ahead when you don't have cash to throw away. Trying to teach my stepson that one. I'm a master plumber here in Texas going on 36 years now. Love ur videos but there's no need file the pipe that long. It's only PVC not copper or running natural gas. But to each its own. Too long to install a clean out especially when the hole is already open
Nothing wrong with it though. He’s making every joint as good as he can. Maybe it’s a touch excessive, but it’s better to be like that than to have some guy cut jagged pieces and throw them together haphazardly
I dont agree with showing the writing. I prefer to keep my joints and fittings free of excess primer spillage to show workmanship, and when installing pipe thatll be visible (outside stacks, waste pipes inside cabinets etc) i was taught to hide the writing, so all the customer sees is the plain white pipe, when possible. Just an opinion
Working many years of commercial plumbing in Georgia, I've known more than a few inspectors who require seeing the lettering so they know you used the right pipe.
In Oregon we use ABS mostly under the home, and fairly frequently all the way to tap/septic. Other than that we use HDPE for pipe bursts and directional boring, and new construction tends to be ABS under the home and 3034 to tap.
I was confused with the PVC but I’m glad you explained it. We use ABS here California. I just did two way clean out in 6hr. Very good and clean video. Thank you.
It says right on the can to keep a wet surface before gluing, not always practical or possible with one person. I have done both ways and never had a blow out and minimal leaks even on hi-pressure sched 80 applications.
@@capnlardo748 First year here and I have yet to have any PVC leaks weather Primer was dry or wet. The most important thing I was told to do was make sure the face of the pipe had primer and glue because I was told around 80% of the seal is made at the front edge of the pipe. Usually to get that edge done right is to apply generous amounts of glue and wipe off excess. It's better more than enough in my opinion. We also use 721 Blue glue to see exactly where the glue has gotten. We used to use ABS but anymore PVC is the way to go. A lot of ABS we work with is absolutely brittle and just not up to par. It cracks significantly more easily than PVC and gets more brittle over time. That is a bad problem when underground's can often settle and move.
They both will get brittle over time any plastic will become dry rot after a while there's no getting around it but my choice is abs simpler process there's no primer involved
Anyone who thinks Roger doesn't know what he is talking about or doesn't do the dirty work is either blind or dumb. LITERALLY EVERYTHING Roger says in his videos is quality advice he'd only be able to obtain through getting his hands dirty for his entire career and building a company himself so screw that noise! Also the best plumbing instructors / teachers I've encountered always have the most badass mustaches, I think there is a correlation there lol!
In Alberta, Canada we use ABS for residential and PVC, XFR or cast iron for commercial. All depends on what the engineer wants. Usually PVC for drainage and cast or xfr for venting because of its fire retardant qualities.
Never seen someone make cutting shitline seem like a rock concert. This is a good idea. I had a gnarly clog 170 feet down hole....had to hire a guy. Never again!
Out here in Utah we don't use primer on pvc up to 4" in diameter pipe anymore unless it's for a pressurised line...other than that you don't need primer and I'm sure thats in every state but you have stubborn old plumbers that still want to use primer
Used sch40 PVC in Montana, and in NWTexas the only difference is we got to use clear primer in Montana. But thank God my plumber in Texas taught me to be very neat with purple primer...
Residential construction plumber in phx AZ and out here it's pretty much all abs. I believe that some commercial work still use PVC but, I never done any commercial work
Where I got my trade, the letters thing is a code requirement. So if someone uncovers it...they can easily identify the type of service they uncovered. It is good practice even without being code requirements. The little things make a good tradesman.
Sandpaper strip. Comes on a roll check it out. From Washington state abs only pvc sewer lines are very uncommon. Your truly JOAT (the handyman of course).
You bosses always are proud when you occasionally get your hands dirty. When you said straight off you sent out the diggers I rolled my eyes. I work for a one plumber business and I am the digger, the getter, the crawler all because the old cranky plumber I work for is getting up in years. I am finally getting the 130 feet of clay pipe upgraded this spring. With this distance I want two 2 way clean outs for total access . House has been here 100 years when it had an outhouse and wood stove.
Where i work we only use copper or stainless pipe, but aboard the ships all our sanitary discharge/sewage is vacuum operated hence the stainless and not pvc.

Learned that day one, when you have inspectors inspecting your work you make sure they can see letters.
in Australia it is a requirement to have letters facing up in drainage and letters facing down in aerial drainage

Manufacturer states to apply solvent while primer is still wet. Never let that primer dry up. You're doing it right.

OHSA says you can't do that any more because you can't read the labels. I know it's stupid but most things they do are

Here in Ontario Canada we mostly use abs but also use pvc depend what area you in but always use pvc for venting water heater or furnaces.

Well in my line of work my dad taught me well in Irrigation Sprinkler systems clean work is the best work and I've learned plumbing from my dad also amazing work man cleaning the burrs off pipe, and you don't slop on primer its like watching my own dad work
We use mostly abs but I've used pvc here in California especially on long sewerlines due the the fact that pvc is more ridged then abs and I'm fighting for 1/4 per ft. We also can use pvc in commercial. I like the fact that you debured pipe so the glue actually gets in the joint

Never see two 3 in combos used like that we have a two way clean out tee that we use. But hell ya you still got in I always liked when my boss came out to the jobs. Lol
My area doesn’t use double combos really either. Lots of 2 way tees, and unfortunately lots of old school Kelley cleanouts that were popular during the 70s and 80s here.
Yep in Idaho it's either a one way or a standard t as a 2 way 🤔
Actually two combos is the proper way to install a two way clean out because when it comes a time to snake that mainline the cable has a natural way to feed down the proper direction in which he/she is trying to cable snake the mainline. A two way clean out fitting is an approved fitting but not necessarily the better application to use for a proper mainline in ground sewer two way clean out.
EC L my reasoning against double cleanouts is the same as my reasoning against Kelley cleanouts. Any drain cleaner worth their gloves should be able to feed the snake any direction without the other stuff
@@eddiekalista3222 but if your gonna install a new double direction clean out might as well install one that's effective. The customer gets his moneys worth with the double combo application
I like a quality job done vs. A time crunch and mess ups because of the time crunch. I really belive in making sure everything is good and time well spent. Quality is important as is attention to detail or you'll be back there fixing it for free when it breaks. Love ya Roger.

New construction plumber from Sacramento, CA here. We use sched 40 pvc for undergrounds only. Everything above is ABS, then to cast iron. Code here dictates buildings above 2 levels require cast on the third and up

You are pure expert, I learn so much from your videos... I just personally think you use too much primer, just from my experience I think a couple rounds with prime (just enough to get a couple layers on) and lots of glue is better than a lot of primer .

Been working on the house I bought cheap a couple years ago, 18K in 2021... that has needed some work but finally getting to the point where I can start some projects. Put in a cleanout like this along with a 2" drain line that goes to what will be my outdoor cooking area. Kinda glad I did since I found that the 4" PVC they put in had a section with pretty much ZERO glue and likely was done by a plumber who told his apprentice to just put the cleaner on all the fittings in the truck so he wasn't standing around for an hour doing nothing. Ever heard of that one? Have your apprentice put cleaner on the stuff weeks or months in advance before using it, seems like that would defeat the purpose IMHO. I suspect the previous cleanout that was put in right next to the house is likely going to be the "it can be used both ways" style but it will eventually end up being changed as it will probably be under the porch when I am done but extended so it can be accessed if needed. Also going to put a cleanout through the foundation near the front of the house for a easy way to clean out the line that way as well if needed though what I will run there is only going to be 3" pvc.
Anyway working on stuff is a labor of love to say the least but it's the only way to get ahead when you don't have cash to throw away. Trying to teach my stepson that one.

I'm a master plumber here in Texas going on 36 years now. Love ur videos but there's no need file the pipe that long. It's only PVC not copper or running natural gas. But to each its own. Too long to install a clean out especially when the hole is already open

I dont agree with showing the writing. I prefer to keep my joints and fittings free of excess primer spillage to show workmanship, and when installing pipe thatll be visible (outside stacks, waste pipes inside cabinets etc) i was taught to hide the writing, so all the customer sees is the plain white pipe, when possible. Just an opinion
Working many years of commercial plumbing in Georgia, I've known more than a few inspectors who require seeing the lettering so they know you used the right pipe.
In Oregon we use ABS mostly under the home, and fairly frequently all the way to tap/septic. Other than that we use HDPE for pipe bursts and directional boring, and new construction tends to be ABS under the home and 3034 to tap.
majority of the pipe we use at that the plumbing company I work for in Alaska is black ABS pipe, PVC pipe occasionally when needed

I'm a commercial plumber and we use abs, schedule 40, schedule 80, galvanized, cast iron and copper
Central California we use ABS. Also, a rep from Spears Chemical instructed us to apply the glue before the primer was dry.
Abs is trash!
It says right on the can to keep a wet surface before gluing, not always practical or possible with one person. I have done both ways and never had a blow out and minimal leaks even on hi-pressure sched 80 applications.
@@capnlardo748 First year here and I have yet to have any PVC leaks weather Primer was dry or wet. The most important thing I was told to do was make sure the face of the pipe had primer and glue because I was told around 80% of the seal is made at the front edge of the pipe. Usually to get that edge done right is to apply generous amounts of glue and wipe off excess. It's better more than enough in my opinion. We also use 721 Blue glue to see exactly where the glue has gotten. We used to use ABS but anymore PVC is the way to go. A lot of ABS we work with is absolutely brittle and just not up to par. It cracks significantly more easily than PVC and gets more brittle over time. That is a bad problem when underground's can often settle and move.
Abs pipe out here in California, although I've seen pvc pipe and fittings stocked at local supply houses. I prefer abs
ive noticed that abs in the ground over time becomes brittle but maybe that just from my experience i prefer schedule 40 PVC
They both will get brittle over time any plastic will become dry rot after a while there's no getting around it but my choice is abs simpler process there's no primer involved

Anyone who thinks Roger doesn't know what he is talking about or doesn't do the dirty work is either blind or dumb. LITERALLY EVERYTHING Roger says in his videos is quality advice he'd only be able to obtain through getting his hands dirty for his entire career and building a company himself so screw that noise! Also the best plumbing instructors / teachers I've encountered always have the most badass mustaches, I think there is a correlation there lol!
In Alberta, Canada we use ABS for residential and PVC, XFR or cast iron for commercial. All depends on what the engineer wants. Usually PVC for drainage and cast or xfr for venting because of its fire retardant qualities.
When you can. Could you talk about all the different type of coppers and what each application is for? Type L type M and type K. Thank you.
type L is for hot/cold potable water....type M is for heating and K is used for underground services..

Out here in Utah we don't use primer on pvc up to 4" in diameter pipe anymore unless it's for a pressurised line...other than that you don't need primer and I'm sure thats in every state but you have stubborn old plumbers that still want to use primer
Used sch40 PVC in Montana, and in NWTexas the only difference is we got to use clear primer in Montana. But thank God my plumber in Texas taught me to be very neat with purple primer...
Residential construction plumber in phx AZ and out here it's pretty much all abs. I believe that some commercial work still use PVC but, I never done any commercial work

Where I got my trade, the letters thing is a code requirement. So if someone uncovers it...they can easily identify the type of service they uncovered. It is good practice even without being code requirements. The little things make a good tradesman.

You bosses always are proud when you occasionally get your hands dirty. When you said straight off you sent out the diggers I rolled my eyes. I work for a one plumber business and I am the digger, the getter, the crawler all because the old cranky plumber I work for is getting up in years. I am finally getting the 130 feet of clay pipe upgraded this spring. With this distance I want two 2 way clean outs for total access . House has been here 100 years when it had an outhouse and wood stove.
Where i work we only use copper or stainless pipe, but aboard the ships all our sanitary discharge/sewage is vacuum operated hence the stainless and not pvc.
