We used two exped mats inside and those mats are 60" wide. They took up the majority of the tent floor space width with about a foot and half or so at the foot end.
I’ve used them in fair weather camping for years. I’ve had good luck with them. Also I did do extra seam sealing on them. But for $35 it’s a great tent.
I used an Ozark Trail 4P for many years while in college. It was a great budge tent. Finally sprung a leak after about 5 years that seam seal couldn't fix.
I have both the 3 & 4 person predecessors of this tent and they are now 15 years old. They have held up through 26 degree weather in a mountain setting and a 3-4 day driving rainstorm in my back yard. I agree with your observations about the high cut rain fly in relation to the fabric side panels. On the older 3 person tent the rainfly does come farther down the side of the tent. My models have a different front door zipper design, so I can't comment on that. Here is what I can say. The Ozark Trail 3,4 & 6 person tents are great casual camping tents-think car camping. They are spacious and have great floors. Their rainflies all fall short when pushed in bad weather. So I've learned to pair them with true camping tarps to enhance their capabilities against colder and inclement weather. Pair them with a good camping tarp and they become heroic in performance. If the tarp is of sufficient size it can be configured to give the sidewall and overhead rain, snow and wind protection well beyond what the tent is rated to withstand. These tents are great options for people who can't or don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on higher end tents.
Great honest and fair review! I do have this tent as an extra tent whenever we have guest who would like to join us during car camping trips! This tent has held up real well! I had this tent for a while now and never had a problem with it. If you wanna use it for a more rugged/backcountry camping trip, just make sure to bring 2 heavy duty tarps. One to put on the ground and another on top for more protection against harsh weather conditions.
The biggest problem with Ozark Trail gear is you don't know which item is great and which is junk until you spend your money. Their insulated mugs and coolers are 90% of a Yeti for a small fraction of the cost. I wish their brand was consistent. Great review.
Poor kid, lousy time for your tent to fail! I've used Ozark tents in the past - they are usually good for 2 to 3 years before something either breaks or rips. Still, for the cost, they perform well for the duration. The old phrase of "you get what you pay for" always holds true for the most part. It's always part of the adventure! These tents are fine for regular fair weather family campground situations. I'm the outlier in terms of serious but for most people who camp 3 or 4 weekends a year this type of tent is fine. In fact I think its probably what most people use. Cheers and happy holidays!!! 🏂
I always buy a heavy duty tarp that covers the whole tent and when it rains or is wendy i put a tarp under the tent then over the tent and tie the tarp down to the ground with extra steaks and it worls perfect
I know exactly what you went through had the same thing happen to me about three years ago zipper failed and had to get a no name tent as I was car camping in a place there was only a small canadian tire available with very minimal selection! I just purchased one for Infield camping for a nascar race in Darlington SC. Its a Labor Day weekend race (first week of September) so I'm hoping it'll be good for the track camping.
When I was homeless I bought a tent from walmart to sleep In it brought in condensation and made everything inside wet and moist especially in the morning so I went and bought a regular tarp for $5 at harbor freight along with some cord I tied a string from one tree to the other staked the ends down with tent spikes from Walmart threw some cardboard inside and I was toasty warm with three sleeping bags I bought at goodwill I slept really warm and the snow didn't pack on the top like a tent it just slid down the side in the morning I just had to scoop the snow away i was able to survive for 3 months in my makeshift tent in the snow and one night they had 60 mph winds!! I was scared that night but I was down in the ditch with trees around me so I think the trees help block the wind maybe made the wind down to 40mph but still that is a good tent for only like $10 total with the tent and stakes ..
Quite a few years ago I was setting up my tent at Lake Scott State Park in western Kansas and a freakishly strong gust of wind grabbed the tent out of my hand and blew it clear out into the lake. This was late at night in March and it was too cold to swim for it. Guess what? My replacement tent was an Ozark Trail 2-person hex dome, because Walmart was the only store I could find in the area that had tents. I think it was a better design than the one you got, and we ended up using that tent a lot until the zippers snd waterproofing were finally dead

Good for general light car camping and short backpacking in fair weather conditions. I have been watching your channel recently and you do a good job with your reviews and your ratings are generally honest and fair.
I was thinking it would probably hold up with the guy lines secured. Maybe a little duct tape on the rain fly in the direction the wind was blowing would've gave you a bit more peace. Good review thanks.

I would have taken anything with a decent rain fly for wind protection but the selection at the store was just not there. Unfortunately being the off season I had the choice between this tent and a similar model 6P because the camping section was sized down for winter. There are few Walmarts in West Texas and few tents ar these Walmarts!
I have this tent, as you mentioned just for occasional camping in a campground. It was just the cheap option to replace my well worn older one that got thrown away by someone else. I found this page by trying to figure out if a cot or two would fit inside it, but haven't had luck finding that info. We DID get the "opportunity" to test out the rain resistance, and that back zipper didn't seem to be any trouble. For $35, it's a good little tent- I agree though, if you're seriously into camping, you want something better. We made the mistake of not locking up our bread, so a squirrel ate a hole in the tent to get to the bread. It's worth patching.
I have this tent and the only issue I have had with it is the little mud mat strap broke it’s tie down loop. I think it should have a metal ring instead of them sewing a piece of tarp to it. I have always used these tents on horse camping trips when growing up, and now just as a weekend warrior style camping. To me the rain fly I like, because it allowed venting with it on. However as long it doesn’t rain I won’t use them as I get really hot and want to see the night sky.
Sleeping with the fly off is a great option as the temps climb in the summer. I was overall really impressed with this tent, especially given that we put it through some conditions it clearly was not designed for. It really is a quality tent. I used an Ozark Trail 5x7 foot tent regularly while in college and beyond with no failures or issues.
Walmart is not so bad this year in ice cold montana I’ve slept outside in -13 degrees lol with a Walmart bag it cost me $60 total and is much too big for me so I stuffed it with three fleece blankets still the total cost of my sleep system and may that I sleep on is $112 total I bought the fleece blankets at goodwill and I made a sleep mat out of a car windshield I found and I bought some of that same stuff in a roll at Lowe’s and just doubled it it keeps the body warm o yeah reflectix is what it’s called good stuff but that’s better than paying $1000 is what people pay for a good cold weather sleeping bag if I added another sleeping bag I’m sure I could get down to -21 easily
I will bet that at 26 degrees F this tent is probably rain proof. But at that temperature I'd worry more about it being ice proof. Wow! You really like to live dangerously. I thoroughly enjoyed your video.

Let’s bash the $35 “Walmart” tent. But, let’s not talk about the “regular” tents “mechanical zipper failure” that left the tent useless when you need it the most, causing you a headache of running around and buying whatever was available. Sounds to me like the Ozark trail $35 from “Walmart” saved your ass without emptying your bank account. That’s a good way to be thankful and even less way to be considerate that your “regular” tent failed on. Let me guess you spent a few hundred dollars on that too huh?
Just to clarify, I was not bashing the Walmart tent at all. In fact I thought it's performance was great in the high winds it was subjected to. It wasn't designed for those conditions and I thought it performed pretty well based on weather we had that night. My other tent, the Eureka Midori 6, required a thorough zipper cleaning and waxing of the zippers, which I completed when I got home and it was back in business. I think some of the desert sand might have got into it while camping in New Mexico earlier that week. But I had owned the Midori 6 for about 6 years before this trip and the zipper split issue was the first failure I had in that tent. So really, that tent owed me nothing after 6 years of excellent performance. Trust me, I was happy to have the Walmart tent for sure. It just wasn't designed for what I was using it for. But for your average camper in an average campground the Walmart 4P would be a solid tent. I had owned an Ozark Trail Walmart tent about ten years earlier which had a rainfly that went all the way to the ground, I was disappointed that Ozark Trail went away from that design to the canopy style. I had used my previous Ozark Trail tent in some really nasty thunderstorms all around the Canadian Great Lakes region without ever springing a leak or having any issues. Just thought I would put it in perspective for you. Cheers.

I’ve used these tents, mostly the first couple years I started camping. I’ve upgraded since then but they are decent for fair weather use.
Yeah honestly they're not bad.
I've used from a 16 man to a 2 man Ozark trail tent. I carried my 2 man for a 12 wk hike. It lasted over 1,000 miles.

I agree with you entirely. Backpacks failed, some of their tents fail. Sleeping bags are decent for warm weather.

After you put the poles in the rainfly and clip it to the main poles there are straps to strap it to the main Pole and it won't pop off anymore

i put this tent up in my back yard. Because my tent from last year broke. The only thing I don't know how to do is put up the guylines
Just tie them on and make sure you pound them in at a 44 degree angle towards the tent so they don't pull out in the wind!!!

Yeah some of those cold weather bags are so expensive! Especially if they are ultralight. Good for you. Use what works!!!

Let’s bash the $35 “Walmart” tent. But, let’s not talk about the “regular” tents “mechanical zipper failure” that left the tent useless when you need it the most, causing you a headache of running around and buying whatever was available. Sounds to me like the Ozark trail $35 from “Walmart” saved your ass without emptying your bank account. That’s a good way to be thankful and even less way to be considerate that your “regular” tent failed on. Let me guess you spent a few hundred dollars on that too huh?
Just to clarify, I was not bashing the Walmart tent at all. In fact I thought it's performance was great in the high winds it was subjected to. It wasn't designed for those conditions and I thought it performed pretty well based on weather we had that night. My other tent, the Eureka Midori 6, required a thorough zipper cleaning and waxing of the zippers, which I completed when I got home and it was back in business. I think some of the desert sand might have got into it while camping in New Mexico earlier that week. But I had owned the Midori 6 for about 6 years before this trip and the zipper split issue was the first failure I had in that tent. So really, that tent owed me nothing after 6 years of excellent performance. Trust me, I was happy to have the Walmart tent for sure. It just wasn't designed for what I was using it for. But for your average camper in an average campground the Walmart 4P would be a solid tent. I had owned an Ozark Trail Walmart tent about ten years earlier which had a rainfly that went all the way to the ground, I was disappointed that Ozark Trail went away from that design to the canopy style. I had used my previous Ozark Trail tent in some really nasty thunderstorms all around the Canadian Great Lakes region without ever springing a leak or having any issues. Just thought I would put it in perspective for you. Cheers.
