You know, I always thought it a shame that many musicians never attempt to use the rhythm circuit- especially those predisposed to trying a myriad of pedals to create different sounds. To me the beauty of what Fender did when creating their flagship guitars was providing all these options. And even today they are doing great things with creating non-custom guitars with features that expand their tonality. To some people the neck issue is a deal breaker. It would be even more so at the price. You know... either way... if they don’t like em big or small, it’s important. I’m a person who enjoys such differences from Guitar to Guitar, unless it’s overt. You brought up the Squier Classic Vibe line earlier, which I find to be very nice and small in that respect. Hey! Love the vid, def my new favorite offset channel, so informative. I have one question tho, I just got a great offer for an American original Jazzmaster, sadly I am not able to test it out in person. What is your opinion on it? Thank you
This video inspired me to go out and buy one, great job! The hunt was a bit tough but I found one on Reverb. Amazingly versatile guitar. Love the strangle switch, which is the reason why I bought it over a Jazzmaster.
I got a 2018 model in the surf green colour and it’s amazing! Definitely my go-to axe for most recording sessions if I’m not playing my American Pro II JM with maple board.
Sounds wonderful! I really like the sound of the Jag but I don't quite get on with the body shape - so once I'm done building my Tele/SuperSonic build I'm going to have a stab at creating the perfect Jaguar for me, but on a Mustang body!
The video I've been waiting for! My AO is (or was before the COVID) my live guitar, and suited me straight out the box. The daphne blue is gorgeous, I wish I could justify one to add it to my arsenal, but my sunburst shall suffice for now. Super interesting about Say It Ain't So! I find the shallow trem cavity depth strange, on mine it goes all the way down to the pickguard no issue. Mine was built early 2018, so perhaps it's a more recent issue? Thanks for the review Mike :)
I have this instrument in Candy Apple Red, and it is my dream guitar. Thank you for showing off this beauty. I really like the full neck and the sound of the pickups. The only issue on mine is the tremolo arm does not stay in place.
I have one too. Even in the daphne blue version :) and I love it like crazy!! But my tremolo arm has the same problem... have you found a solution yet?
This Is a Beautiful guitar love it! The sound the looks everything. Excellent review Mike! I picked up a Squire 70s CV in Daphne Blue with the cool block inlays. Really enjoying it But it did need a fair amount of setup work more than I was capable of. But now it plays great and it's a totally different feeling guitar compared to my couple of Strats and Gibson and Epiphone SGs
14:46 Are you sure that ground wire was really hanging loose, or did it just come free when you took the trem off? On my AO Jazzmaster, on the pickguard, the ground wire to the bridge thimble is just sandwiched between the pickguard and the guitar body, and held there by the pressure of the pickguard being screwed down. Seems possible they'd do the same with the trem.
What a beautiful and great-sounding guitar man. I wish i could afford it :( Another awesome review Mike and btw really waiting for your opinion on the squier cv 70, if and when you get your hands on it. I can't find a decent review about that particular guitar honestly..
Im definitely posting quite a long time after this video. But,......... I recently got a Squier Jaguar. And do I have admit 5hat the tremolo cavity, it's well deep enough to press the bar down all the way. Having said this, I'm very thankful for walking through the control section on the jaguar. I'm not a real bad ass shred master, nor some virtuoso.. but I do know my bits and tricks. And my experience at home playing so far, I'm excited to own this piece myself now. A personal note, I bought this with a bit of money my uncle left me, I know he was a Jimi Hendrix fan, but music lover in the first place. So I dedicated the purchase to him. I'm most certainly going to use this guitar in my rock band as rhythm guitar. Thank you for the clip, again. Hopefully after this COVID stuff, we'll get on stage and hope to present you a clip of a live gig WITH the jaguar! Regards, Richard.
I got this guitar about 3ish months ago just because of you Mike. Your passion for offset and your guidance is inspiring! I love my Original Jag (same colour as your review model) but I had to "fight" with the bridge. My guitar setting up skills are not the best and due to a local lockdown I was not able to go down the shop to set it up... so what did I do ? I got a mastery bridge and it make a big big big difference (the bridge makes this thing "idiot" proof") but you have to remove the foam. Its also important to mention that the paint shop is nitro ! So it will get a natural wear and look super vintage. The guitar also comes in a nice suitcase with golden insides .... All in all Fender did a great job ... just get yourself a different bridge ...
@@sc3ku I tried to combine the M with the mute but there was lots of tension between bridge-mute-body - especially when I “turned” the mute on I was getting scared. So I took the mute off and voila ! Maybe it is possible to have mute and M bridge but it exceeded my skills -
the intro jam made me so happy hahah. I own a Mexican Vintera 60s mod. Jaguar that I have a couple of years now, and it's a "modified version" of an original Jaguar, it has two humbuckers and different electronics setups. The original single coil jaguar pickups look super cool and I'm considering putting one in mine for the neck. Also the "mute-brick" looks super cool and I'm curious if there's a modification option to buy separately so I can install it on mine.
I bought a Jaguar a while back and I really like it but then I bought a 2017 Classic series 60s jazzmaster last Saturday and like I think I like the whole longer scale length better
You're not alone in that, and it's one reason that the Jaguar is always a bit softer on the resale market. A majority of players really do seem to appreciate the Strat/Tele scale length and find the Jag too short. But that's why I always step up the string gauge a bit, they really tighten up with 12s and 13s
I recently purchased a 2019 American Originals (in daphne blue). The guitar is top - only the strings seem to be offset downward overall, so the high E string can slip off the fretboard relatively easily. Is there from your side - via remote diagnosis - a good approach to this problem? In the last few weeks I've been watching all the Jaguar videos (and a few about the Jazzmaster) up and down - think they're all great!
Tilt pockets can be reverse shimmed for flatter neck & lower bridge. Place shim at other side of neckplate. Use proper compression & screw torque. Great use of spring overtones in this video.
Hi Mike, I have a vintera jaguar with a mastery bridge, and have noticed that the bridge doesnt rock back and forth like the original when using the tremolo, is this normal behavior for the mastery bridge, or is something wrong. I have also noticed my tremolo is "shallow" if that makes sense, it doesn't go as deep as my JM, and I don't know whether its the arm, which isnt far off the body, or if i should replace my tremolo system? I am having trouble finding an answer for this, and was hoping you could lend me your knowledge. Thank you, and I really enjoy and appreciate your content
The Mastery is specifically designed to stay put, so it's working as intended. To answer your trem question I'd need to have your guitar in hand, but next time you change strings play around with spring tension, and maybe even remove it from the body and see if you can find any marks in the cavity
I know you said that you like the 7.25" radius necks, and I'm with you on that! What do you think of fretboard binding on Jags and Jazzmasters in general? Dig it? Don't dig it? Doesn't matter? Thanks!
@@Puisheen Same here! I don't mind bindings on Gibsons though, particularly Les Pauls. Bindings are fine on those. I wondered whether I was just being super purist or weird! lol
One thing that I like about these AO Offsets is that the binding around the neck is as thick as it is on old Fenders. I noticed that the Squier Classic Vibe Jaguar has a very thin binding.
My local shop has the same one. It feels great playing it but the rhythm / lead switch & one of the roller knobs are not working correctly. I let them know & their tech is gonna check it out. Once it's proper I may pop her.
Jaguar's look so cool. I remember being obsessed with the one played in the Counting Crows - Mr. Jones video back in those MTV days. If you vibe with that look and sound then what a perfect guitar.
Would you mind reassuring me with some perspective clarification? The corner of that fold down desk there looks awful close to the headstock sometimes. I was getting anxious you were going to whack it. But you’re going to tell me that it’s about a foot away and I can rest assured, right?
Note on pocket--- the vibrato unit was not patented for pocket depth & guitarist use. Grounding is typically to benefit proper; you guessed it: grounding. You can be shocked with two prong amp, ungrounded guitar, & hot power. Your tech work is top notch. The guitars are assembled & set up for store use only. The 65 guitars did not sell with banjo string high E. Ribbon wound low end is more popular on the jazzmaster. The best tension strings are typically the D'addario flat jazz 11 or 12 depending on your touch.
GC has a Daphne Blue exclusive Squier version of this I picked up last week; exact same looks sans the mute and has blocks instead of dots. I played 3 in total. Two were pretty bad, but the one I brought home is an absolute gem. It has been a revelation to my playing. Every single selection (including rhythm and strangle) are not only usable, but musical. I have put a Descendant on it and will likely change out the bridge for a Halon or tune-o-Matic, but it really didn’t need any mods to be awesome all on its own. BTW, Mike, it would be awesome if you could review one of those Halon bridges. Maybe I could send you my Jag for a review if I end up putting one on it.
Great guitar I got the exact same one earlier this year and really love it! I played two different ones at 2 different GCs. Mine still needed a good setup though. I have 10s on it. 9s were way too slinky. Totally different animal compared to my other couple of Fender Strats and Gibsons...
Thanks for the bit about the ground wire being loose in the trem block cavity. It's It's just you for showing us in the video whos getting a award for potentially saving lots of peoples lives from being electricuted to death. You are right in pointing out poor quality control at the factory
Looking forward to your Fender 60th Anniversary Jaguar reviews! These are really tempting me, just can't decide on the color as I like them both, edge to the Blue...but Dakota Red? Ugh!. Lucky for me they didn't offer these in Ocean Turquoise or Hot Rod Red. Cheers!
Mike please review the Vintera 60s Jaguar in Ocean Turquoise. There aren’t any good reviews of it on youtube and I would love a very informative review as I wanna know if its a good jaguar to be my first.
Hi. I'm thinking about getting one of these. I had a Thin Skin Jazzmaster for a couple of years (with a Mastery bridge), but I found it too "stiff" and not enjoyable to play. I just watched your video review of the Thin Skin JM where you discussed the angled neck pocket, and I think that was causing the stiffness. This Jag has the same feature - should I be concerned? Thanks!
Maybe not concerned, but aware that the same feature is in play. Honestly if I were in the market for a thin skin, I’d go ‘62 all the way, and those have flat pockets
@@Puisheen thanks for your quick reply. One other question -- I'll be checking out an Am Pro Jag at a nice discount, and am wondering if getting that and upgrading the pickups might get me close to same place for several hundred dollars less
I played the Am Pro, and it's very comfortable to play, but it's from 2017 and has the too-wide bridge. And no case. (Hence the discount.) So I'd have to spend more $ on pickups, bridge, and case/gig bag to make it a keeper than makes sense.
@@robgoetz6923 Yeah that bridge is a bummer, but they're pretty easy to replace at least. But I agree, that's a lot you might want to replace for a guitar you just bought.
I enjoyed watching this and super geeking out right along with you lol I made my girlfriend watch it with me lol I love the sound so much I’m buying a set of ‘62 pups for a Sherwood green jaguar project I’m starting soon. What’s your opinion on buzz stops, Mike? I’d like to maybe thrown on along with the bridge mute too
I’m really interested in these, any idea how the neck compares to the American original 60’s Jazzmaster? That was way too chunky for my liking. I prefer a modern C.
I've never really looked much at jaguars because of the short scale (there's something magical about 25.5) but this demo with the strangle switch and mutes are making me think I need to get one in my hands to try
Thank you, I thought I was losing my marbles when I told people it had this mute control...not everyoneis aware of it...lol...when broke in, I find it very cool...Iove this model.
I've played one of the AVRI Jaguars and it was amazing. It made me want a Jaguar, and I so I tried the Johnny Marr one which I ended up having so many problems with. I'd love one of these someday.
hey @puisheen! Could you tell me which models of Jaguars/Jazzmasters don't have chunky necks? I'm having trouble finding a definitive database of all the variations!
Japanese guitars tend to have smaller necks, as do AVRI62. CP and Roadworn and CL60s are slightly bigger but not by much, they all tend to have the same feel.

I got a 2018 model in the surf green colour and it’s amazing! Definitely my go-to axe for most recording sessions if I’m not playing my American Pro II JM with maple board.
@jeltoninc.8542 congratulations! Very cool!
Sounds wonderful! I really like the sound of the Jag but I don't quite get on with the body shape - so once I'm done building my Tele/SuperSonic build I'm going to have a stab at creating the perfect Jaguar for me, but on a Mustang body!
Thank you for using "myriad" in its proper form, without "a" and/or "of" surrounding it. Also, excellent video!
The mute is crazy fun, every time I hear one I want a lefty with one.
@@madridista3927 unfortunately not! I am eager to hear a solution
It would be great to hear a comparison between the jaguar and jazzmaster, the American original versions
I wish i could afford it :(
Another awesome review Mike and btw really waiting for your opinion on the squier cv 70, if and when you get your hands on it.
Thanks thanks for the review Puisheen! Any plans to review the vintera 60s jag or player jag?
Same fight with bridge bere. I installed an American pro bridge. Now it's very good.
Michael Lemmo has a mute and a mastery together on a 62(?) Jaguar
You’re 👏 awesome ! Love your playing and your guitars !
Thanks, Michael!
That usually boils down to neck alignment which is easy to correct with most bolt-on necks
That mute is such a great sound I love it
Tilt pockets can be reverse shimmed for flatter neck & lower bridge. Place shim at other side of neckplate. Use proper compression & screw torque. Great use of spring overtones in this video.
I was waiting for you to demo this beast!!! I believe it's based off of a late 65' due to the binding.
@@Puisheen thank you so much, I really appreciate it
I know you said that you like the 7.25" radius necks, and I'm with you on that! What do you think of fretboard binding on Jags and Jazzmasters in general? Dig it? Don't dig it? Doesn't matter? Thanks!
It's not for me, always changes the shape of the neck
@@Puisheen Same here! I don't mind bindings on Gibsons though, particularly Les Pauls. Bindings are fine on those. I wondered whether I was just being super purist or weird! lol
The fan blowing your hair during the chords 😂
Any recommendations on a similar guitar with a lower price point if we are trying to get that old school surf rock sound? Thanks!
Sounds amazing. Great playing.
Thanks so much Ian!
@7:42 What I say when I see a new Puisheen video.
Awesome channel ! What do u think about the vintera jag?
Dream guitar
One thing that I like about these AO Offsets is that the binding around the neck is as thick as it is on old Fenders. I noticed that the Squier Classic Vibe Jaguar has a very thin binding.
Gotta’ love “Still Dre”- they should have had you onstage for the Super Bowl halftime show with Dr. Dre… ☺️
OH YEAH I forgot about that video. That was a great song
Nice demo
Would you mind reassuring me with some perspective clarification? The corner of that fold down desk there looks awful close to the headstock sometimes. I was getting anxious you were going to whack it. But you’re going to tell me that it’s about a foot away and I can rest assured, right?
Yes, it's not that close at all haha
@@Puisheen phew! *mops brow*
9:12 "Still...hitting them switches in the Jaguar, girl!"
Love the Squier, and thanks for the offer but we're moving and I wouldn't want to risk missing your guitar.
@@Puisheen I ought to try a 7.25 radius jag as part of my searcg
I enjoyed watching this and super geeking out right along with you lol I made my girlfriend watch it with me lol I love the sound so much I’m buying a set of ‘62 pups for a Sherwood green jaguar project I’m starting soon. What’s your opinion on buzz stops, Mike? I’d like to maybe thrown on along with the bridge mute too
I am 100% anti buzz stop and have removed hundreds of them over the years. All any offset needs to play great is a proper setup!
