Sad when people don't know Johnny Marr. Good news is it's not too late. They way he fuses arpeggios and single notes, his chord voicings, will never grab attention the way Hendrix, SRV, Satriani, Vai, EVH (et al) did, but how they add color and personality to a song, are kind of unmatched. It can be easy miss just how extraordinary he is as a musician.

Johnny Marr was the guitarist for The Smiths. If you've heard nothing else by them, you have almost certainly heard at least the guitar intro to "How Soon Is Now" which has been used in an edited form for I think some US TV show, and perhaps other things. He has played a lot of guitars, so I don't know if he used a Jaguar on that track. There's a really good interview with him by Dan & Mick of That Pedal Show, if you have almost 2 hours to kill.

My 1st Fender was an original '62 Jaguar. I always wanted a Strat, but I couldn't afford one. This was back in the 70s and to buy used equipment you had to comb through ads in the newspaper classifieds. I know these are things that are unfamiliar to a lot of people these days. Eventually my Jag got stolen and I had to buy my first brand new guitar - a MIJ Strat. The band leader required a "Fender sound". It still breaks my heart when I see a Jag. I miss my guitar...

I love Johnny Marr's work in the 80s with The Smiths, Electronic, Talking Heads and The The. He played with The Pretenders after The Smiths and before The The. I’ve been playing them for 14 years now. I own/have owned various guitars. I think I’ve got around 30 in total and my two favorites are fender/squier jaguar HHs and Schecter C1s. I play a bit of everything under the sun from the Beatles to Lamb of God and I can tell you the jaguar HH is insanely versatile. In the beginning of the documentary “as the palaces burn” Lamb of God guitarist, Mark Morton can be seen playing a Kurt Cobain jaguar a testament to how versatile this guitar really is. The jaguar HH I think is truly an underrated guitar and my squire vintage modified HH is low-key one of the best guitars out there.

Jaguar is the ultimate surf tone guitar. Its little and its all chrome and curves and its a mean little guitar. The single coils are very characteristically very close to a strat, but are worked with slightly different. People like to put humbuckers in high gain with a gibson bridge to do punk rock settings too in true nirvana fashion if youre into that, but the single coils that it comes with for playing in the room and recording are very textural and sweet no need for upgrades. I imagine in a live setting humbuckers would help alot with high gain, but ultimately unnecessary for most people.

Jaguars also turn up a ton on Beach Boys albums. Roland S Howard (The Birthday Party) also had a particular sound built around his Jaguar, MXR Distortion+ and a Blue Box, and a Fender Twin. Someone created a pedal a few years ago named after him that used the circuits of both pedals, and included the usual Blue Box mod of not having that big capacitor left on the board since it usually kills about 30% or so of the volume you have when you turn on the effect otherwise..

Not a well known artist but my favourite jaguar player is Josh T Pearson of Lift to Experience. If you like Christian music then The Texas Jerusalem Crossroads is a must listen.

Johnny Marr didn't really use Jags during the Smiths, he played more Teles and a Rickenbacker. But he did use a Jag when recording the Modest Mouse record We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. I love that record.

I’m sure you’ve already read plenty of comments that say this, but if you wanna get that Johnny Marr sound just start at the beginning and work your way through chronologically with the Smiths albums. He also used Rickenbacker 330 and 360’s I believe. Of course I see you were using a Roland Jazz Chorus amp which I believe is where you get a lot of his sound from. You could use a strat, tele, or jazzmaster and get the same sound as a jaguar as long as you have the Roland amp.

Johnny Marr was in Modest Mouse for a short while. He was in Issac Brock’s house and Issac handed him a Jaguar, which Johnny never played before, and he instantly loved it. Issac didn’t like it, so he sold it to Johnny. However, Johnny did notice some issues, so he modded things, like adding nylon inserts on the bridge posts, and changed the controls. Fender copied these mods on this signature model.

When I first discovered offset Fenders, I preferred the Jazzmaster. Over the years, I've become more of a fan of short-scale guitars, so I think I might possibly prefer a Jaguar these days. I should play one and see how it compares to my Jazzmaster.

I do like my Jaguar and Strat, recently sold my Marr Jag.
But my favorite guitars are EBMM Kaizen (traditional trem) and Majesty (floating trem), and Ibanez PS10 (hard tail).
just wait until strat players discover the EBMM Majesty.

All I can say is Player Ventura 60's or 70's model so you can experience the real traditional thing. Or, better yet, get a classic vibe 70's model!

Enjoy your Johnny Marr deep dive. He wrote the riff for Dashboard by Modest Mouse. He also has a great solo career and has had multiple bands.
My Johnny Marr Jag has converted me to offsets. I have a hard time going back.

I am so surprised you didn’t know Johnny Marr. I always figured you for an indie music kid. As you have discovered he is a great guitarist, and now you have the entire Smiths catalog to discover. All that said, Johnny Marr never played a Jaguar when he was in the Smiths. Marr discovered the Jaguar when he joined Modest Mouse. Once he discovered the Jaguar he has pretty just played Jags.
The main thing I love about Jaguar’s is the way they feel to play. The short scale makes them really comfortable to play.

ok, you have played my favorite guitars but i’m not expecting you to like all the garage/punk/grunge bands that played them and made them so iconic to me. so to keep in the guitar realm, i’d say you should try an epiphone wilshire, easiest the most comfortable guitar i’ve ever played

The Smiths are complicated lol Morrissey is such an a-hole. I do love Marr's guitar playing. I think the Smiths have a good, oh, 10-15 absolutely wonderful songs. Then other songs that sound like those 15, but less memorable.
It's cool to stumble upon this.
I have 3 SGs, an Alvarez semihollow art series, a Jazzmaster, an Explorer, and a few Les Paul's that I never want to play anymore lol.
A Jag is definitely one I've been wanting lately.

I have a 12 string Jazzmaster and it rips. Never had a Jaguar. Johnny Marr plays very complex patterns, hard to learn and easy to screw up.

No idea who Johnny Marr is? How do guitarist not know the top players in other genres? Not that they have to be into that musicians music but not knowing them. Think about it, if someone played guitar seriously for 10 or 20 years but not know who Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page, Wes Montgomery or Kurt Cobain are. Wouldn’t that be weird?

To really get a fender offset to shine, there's a bit of specific setup that should be done. They were designed with a shim in mind. Check out the videos by puisheen. I followed his guides and it made a massive difference in the feel and playability of my Jag.
