Have this guitar for about a year now and I consider it extremely good for the price. First of all, the pickups as you said are really good, especially for the price. They are not fantastic in some way, but I doubt that someone can blindly distinguish if these ones or the vintera's (a guitar with double the cost) are better overall. Second, I personally did not have any important setup issues except adjusting the height which then tends to remain stable, and setting the truss rod correctly, and filling the nut slots a bit, as I am using 12s as preferred strings. But, before this change that I chose to do, it was decent in terms of factory setup. The fretboard was a bit dry as you mentioned, but nothing a bit of lemon oil can't handle. My greatest fear due to the price point was that it would have tuning stability issues. Turns out it has absolutely none, no matter how hard I use the trem. It stays in tune for weeks, and will need a bit of tuning only when there are important temperature and humidity changes. Overall, I had no issues at all BUT the fact is that I was lucky. These guitars have dubious QC at best, thus I would recommend, if possible, to try out before buying or at least buy from a dealer that you know, a local shop or something that can easily support you if you have any issues that you can't solve yourself. Other than that it is an excellent guitar that can easily stand its ground against instruments that cost double.

I picked one up, used all your set-up tricks and tips, and I LOVE IT!! Thanks so much for putting together such well-produced, informative videos! But I also agree there's no reason they couldn't do all this at the factory: loctite saddles and height adjustment posts, properly shimmed neck, and vibrato bar hammer trick.

  • @shoon8000
    @shoon8000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

I have the shell pink version of this and I agree completely with all the points you made. Great guitar with some slightly less than impressive parts. The nut is real bone straight from the factory which is real cool seeing as most fenders don't even have this spec! Out of the box the only problem I had was an unbearably dry and rough fret board but after oiling it and playing it in the past few months I genuinely think its a phenomenal guitar and couldn't recommend it enough to anyone looking for their first offset style guitar!

Your demos are amazing! My former band mate and I were talking about these, and we kind of landed on if you want that classic Jag sound at a reasonable price, you kind of have to buy this Squire or an 80's MIJ. Our friend had a sponsorship and kept going through the newer Jags they would send him and he didn't like a single one. Kind of weird. I also noticed that my 2020 american performer strat had no soul, too. Squire name is going to be less and less of a thing going forward. Putting in the time for a great setup and some basic upgrades, these guitars are AMAZING imo.

I am going to buy another one and make some mods (new pickups, for instance, at least for the neck). It is just for the sake of experimentation and sound. I will leave the other CV jaguar I have as it is, the pickups are surprisingly good: they aren't as bright as other jaguar picks but they still have clarity and that fat tone which you don't find in all single coils. Best!

Came for the review which was excellent as always, but...
As I've seen many of your videos now, your playing is really something else, it's... out of this world! :O
I found myself getting really excited every time I see a short demo of the given instrument. For me, your playing is very inspirative: laid back when the time is right, aggressive when it's needed. Amazing balance! You helped me approach guitar playing in a very-very different angle than I'm used to. And I'm not even an offset player. :O (main instrument right now is a Peavey JF-2 EX, and I play it very differently now... she really came alive!)
Of course, you fuel my fascination with offset guitars too. :) (my dad is an offset player) I know that the Fender Vintera Jag is just right for me, so soon I'll be getting one.
Long story short, from the bottom of my heart: thank you for all the inspiration and knowledge!
You quickly became one of my favorite guitarists! ;)

Hey Mike, greetings from South Oz (Australia), discovered your channel 12 months ago, it has been really helpful. This one is a great review and the Offset playing shows off that Jag sound.
While I'm relatively new to playing Guitar (just on18months), I am an old offset tragic (I was around when the Young Charlatans played)
I got a black CV Jag a few months ago, and after following your set up tricks, it plays and feels great.
I was mainly using the "lead" neck pickup at first, it took a while to get the Bridge pickup dialed in to my Fender Champ 50XL (Jensen Neo Stealth 80 speaker upgrade)/MXR Dist+/EHX Soul Food/NU>X Atlantic set up, but I persisted and found a few sounds that fit my evolving sound.
As part of that, I did one circuit mod and wired the Bridge PU to the 50K Rhythm circuit, it make it more versatile for me.
    Cheers

Only issues I can see/feel are the frets are a bit sharp and the nut extends a bit over one side of the neck but those both seem to be easy fixes and I plan to see a local luthier to fix those issues. All in all I am absolutely smitten with this guitar, especially considering I paid 1/3 of the price as the Vintera would have been. Thanks again for the great video run down!

Great review Mike! You're playing is somewhat gentler on a Jaguar than a Jazzmaster, and I must say... I don't hate it! You make the Squier sound wonderful :) hope you're well

This did help me decide to get one. Last year I had to do so much set up on a new CV Mustang that I felt like I should’ve been up for employee of the month at the Cort plant. I feel like Fender has been listening to complaints, because the frets only needed polishing and and the bridge was surprisingly already intonated. I just shimmed the neck, added a locking vibrato and just for me changed the pickguard and put a Novak JMX in the neck - a great guitar.

The best review of this guitar! Been wanting a jag. So the all the product pages say nut width is 1.650”/42mm. I wonder if they changed the spec from narrow nut, 1 5/8”. Or maybe the product page said 1.650” before as well, but it’s actually narrow? I see wrong specs listed all the time. Product page still says bone nut, which is cool.

I've had the black CV Jag on my radar since they came out and haven't pulled the trigger yet. Love the block inlays and binding. I sold my surf green VM Jag when these came out. Need to upgrade to the CV sooner or later. I realize the bridge, pups, and nut at better. Great demo Mike. You're very thorough as usual.

Just got mine from GC for $350. Two stores & 3 guitars. I got the one that feels the best to me. I sold my JM KO mettalic because I didn't like the feel, sound or wiring. 3 days & this Squire kicks the JMs tail! She goes on the bench tomorrow, but the only adjustment I feel is needed is lower action.
    Thanks again Mike!!!

Just recently discovered your channel (thanks to doing some research into purchasing this specific guitar type). You're a wealth of knowledge and wield a mighty axe (your demos at the end - man, I love the stuff you chose to play). Thanks for doing what you do & sharing it with us on TH-cam. :)

I bought one I did the neck shim and heavier strings ( still got to get loctite) I like it , I thought the 24" scale might be a problem but it's not . I'm a bass player and I like that the body feels like my jazz basses .

I've wanted a jazzmaster for so long but it was the set up issues that made me decide on an esquire instead because I could only afford to the guitar and not a set up if it needed it, but I'm super happy with my choice so it worked out

Great design that plays itself, while providing a unique sound.Don't even mind the skinnier neck.
I have an older model ( the new one is better, - been looking @them. The set ups are bad, and can deter you if you don't understand the fixes)with the SD's, and the bridge is very hot for a single coil; it does give it a unique voice.Works for many diverse sounds,- Shoegaze, Ambient, Surf, Psychedelic, and Garage.
Replaced the pots , and it made a big difference.

Thanks for the great video yet again Mike! My CV had the same issues with the bone nut, dry fretboard, and loose bridge height adjustment screws. I did not experience anything wrong with the vibrato system. So that (fortunatelly) with some tools from amazon and help from people on youtube made it possible to adjust at home. Plays very nicely now.
I bought it to see if I would like the offest guitars and I definitely fell in love but sadly Fender (American) doesn't have it in black with the same setup :(

My first visit here; from 5 watt world. Enjoyed it thank you. And, its always good to hear R.S. Howard's name mentioned. Recently enjoyed the killer cover version of Alice Cooper's "Black Juju" by him & Lydia Lunch. Talk about screaming guitar; it blew my mind.

I found a different color coat of paint under my surf green models coat.
candy deep blue is gonna look cool as heck when the paint starts rubbing off.
maybe they used the left over bodies from some other jag model? thought it was interesting.

FINALLY! Skinny nuts shout out! I have been waiting a stupid amount of time for it and it did not disappoint!
I hope to get one of these guitars someday. I’m stuck about the stock pickups. They’re decent but don’t do much for me. Or my ears are going bad finally at 26.
Now I have to decide on one of these, trying to find a Jazzmaster that’ll fill the Jazzmaster sized hole in my heart from when I sold mine or a Squier CV ‘50s tele.

My local luthier said that, you could make cheap guitar sounds expensive but never the playability.
Btw, those jag would really sounds if you pair it with Spring reverb and vintage screamer.

I picked up a seafoam green when on sale from Musicians Friend a month ago. I was surprised how good the setup was out of the box. Break angle was good Bridge up tremolo quiet. Fretwork good. I had it setup for 11s and it came back really good. Tech was not a fan of the floating bridge but he did a good job adjusting the action Great purchase. Love the sound and playability even compared to my American Deluxe Strat.
