  • In this video, you will learn the technique for a super spinny backhand loop technique vs a backspin ball.
Many players find this a difficult shot to execute, so revert to pushing instead. But if you can learn the backhand loop technique, it can give you a big attacking advantage.
The tips in the video come from Emma Harradine. Emma is a Level 3 coach. She has won English national titles in the over 40s and over 50s women's category.
Emma explains how to use your legs, elbow, forearm and wrist to generate lots and lots of topspin. She plays this shot brilliantly and her technique is a great example to copy.
You can find out more about Emma and her coaching services on her website. www.emmattcoac...
This video was made in partnership with Table Tennis England www.tabletenni...
In the video, Emma is using this equipment:
    Blade: JOOLA Fever
Rubber (both forehand and backhand): JOOLA Dynaryz ACC bribartt.co.uk...

Great video! Although it would have been helpful to see you trying it, Tom. If you struggled with it, Emma's comments to you would have helped everyone even more.

I'm so lucky to be coached by Emma, Tom. And ironically, it was a connection from these videos you shot with her in Cambridge that subsequently led to me discovering she coaches just a few miles from me here in Somerset. I can't speak highly enough of Emma as both a fantastic, empathetic coach & as a person. Thanks for producing the videos with her :-)

That's great that you were able to connect with Emma. I'm sure she will help you improve a lot. I'll have more videos with Emma over the next few months. Not that you need them now. You have the real thing!

Neat! It's a great weapon to develop. I need to aim more open loops at the crossover point. It causes me trouble when others do it.

My coach wanted us to do bakchand loop to block and corrected me from this habit of going deep with the racket in the same way that I do when I do backhand opening loop vs backspin balls. Should there be a separate video for backhand loop on topspin or nospin balls, as there seems to be a different backhand technique for it (and something people usually point to when they refer to backhand loop)?

Interesting. Slower and loaded with spin down the line loop was my the most natural opening shot with celluloid ball regardless of blade top ply, either limba or koto. With BTY Kiso Hinoki V it was mega-spinny. Now I try to open attack with faster shots.

I struggle in returning this type of loop especially if it land near net. Probably include best way to tackle such slow spiny loops.

The BH loop / drive is the special weapon of the shakehand grip. It would be a waste not to develop it to the max.

You was just block the ball back. I just smash out the spin from the ball or counter attack this loop and you will lose the point. I can make spinny and low arc long shots, and if i want a very spinny loop, then i try to make shorter and shorter (that will be higher arc), because the opponent jump far back when he/she see i prepare the loop, and, he/she will think this will be long. She's technic not bad, but she make a chance to counter attack for the opponent. Because this spinny loop is high and long.

You hit the nail on the head with this one. First thought I had was, why not just smash it or counter drive it. But maybe it's more of changing the pace in the rally? I don't know.

It's just another shot for us all to learn and develop. When to use it and against who is a different thing altogether. Don't use it against flat smashers for example but against defensive type players as a way of turning a push rally into an attack rally it's going to work for you
