Excellent tutorial. Brilliant in the detail, the breakdown of the technique and the application. Changes in the hip position when left or right of centre was great help. Thanks very much for this.
really great details here! thanks! question: when you hit the backhand loop against backspin, how are your feet situated ? are your feet always in forehand stance (hitting side foot a little back) even when hitting this shot?
I am not the coach and he has not responded. So let me put in my 2 cents. When hitting backhand, always keep both feet parallel. That is because the optimal hitting zone is right in front of your body, not to the side. As beginner, you will load your weight on the left leg, and rotate toward the right leg, as your body elevate. That is, rotate left to right, and rotate upward. But as you get better, you could decide if you want to load your weight on the left leg or right left, depending on the situation. If the ball is slight to the left side of your body, load on the left leg. If the ball is slightly on the right of your body, load on the right left. The most critical analysis in the coach video is that when the ball is low and close to the table (half long), loads on both legs, performs very compact rotation using both legs, and use abs to elevate. That is because when the ball is low and close to the table, you need to come down more and load on both legs, so it is very difficult to have time to perform full rotation and lift up with full upward motion. So you use compact rotation on BOTH legs, and use abs to help on the lifting.
Very well lesson, as always. Also, if this comment is lucky enough to be seen by you, can you make some tutorial about those Europe players (Vladimir Samsonov or Timo Boll for that matter) skills, please?
Could you make some material about backhand flick like Lin Yun Ju. When and how to use it. When keep bat flat, when one should increase the angle. How to flick ball with backspin, topspin, no-spin ball? Thank you!
please anwer my question coach: in the other video you said to use the right hip and technique and here you talked about using the left hip. I'm assuming you are supposed to use the left hip to play a backhand loop against backspin and the right hip for backhand loop against topspin???
Maybe you can post the other video (with timestamp) and the rest can help clarify? Based on what I understand from this video (from what he said, in vietnamese): - most people (old ML included) started learning backhand loop (BHL) by using hip rotation (weight shift left to right). - as the game becomes harder (faster push, better placement, better location concealment), ML has no time to hip rotation, hence shorten the stroke. Now he uses no weight shift (too slow), but rather lower body then standing up in straight line. He focuses more force on lower arm too. The bat travel more down-to-up, back-to-front instead of left-to-right. - lower level players should learn the old BHL (weight transfer left-to-right) instead of trying to mimic ML first. Once familiarised with the old technique, we can try learning ML's variation.
