Total life saver. Keyboard died shortly after cleaning keys with glass cleaner on cloth. Local Apple Authorized dealer quoted me $1,999 to replace keyboard and logic board... due to liquid being found on logic board. He firmly advised purchasing new. OEM keyboard w/backlight $24, tools... (already had), time 2hr including cleanup of frame after removing keyboard (Coffee or hot chocolate stains (Kids). Everything working like new. Thank you.

Thank you so much! This made an intimidating job easy - took about two hours and everything's working well. I had to use a piece of sticky tape to help get the keyboard cable in (lined up the keyboard cable in the socket and then used the tape to pull it forward), but everything else was straightforward. Really clear and helpful walkthrough.

Thanks! I'm typing this on my freshly installed keyboard on an MBP I got for cheap not knowing a third of the keys were dead. Looks like someone spilled some coffee on it at one point.
A few tips I'd like to add:
-Get a magnet on a stick. Simple tool but I used it a lot for screws that didn't wanna come up.
-Use tweezers without a metal tip. Mine are ceramic. They make life so much easier with reattaching the cables.
-Some cables have locking levers, some are press fit, some pull straight up (like the fan). Be aware which ones remove in which way. It's pretty self evident if you look closely.
-I didn't find anything particularly difficult to remove. I did this whole job with a relatively inexpensive eBay set of micro tools. Just be sure you have a solid T6 Torx and you're good.
Two of the FIFTY ONE FFS screws that hold the keyboard in were rusted out from the coffee spill. They did not move whatsoever. Not even my stripped screw removal kit was able to budge them. I actually ended up hitting those two with a 1/16th" drill bit and drilling out the screws. Be careful if you must do this - Open the screen and lay a towel down on your table, then perch the MBP with the screen hanging over the edge, then drill. Only a second or two is needed because the screws are very soft metal. Clear any metal shavings away. Thankfully my two rusted out screws weren't near each other and so two missing screws out of 51 doesn't affect typing at all from what I can tell.
Again, the keyboard screws are very soft metal. Use the largest bit that grabs the screw and use medium-hard pressure straight down when you start them spinning to avoid stripping the head.
Thanks to this tutorial everything on my laptop still works after it all went back together, so thank you. :)
Now that I know everything still works I'm gonna go ahead and get it an SSD, max out the RAM, replace the battery, and install High Sierra.

THANK YOU for this great tutorial! I had removed the logic board before, replaced the dvd for a bigger HHD, and the original HHD for an SSD, but without this tutorial, I would have NEVER done it. Subscribed!
Sadly, my early 2011 actually has 67 screws. 😕

Followed this video exactly, took me about two hours with help of my partner. It was very easy to follow along side the instructions and everything fell into place and works as it should. My Macbook Pro is from 2011 Model: A1278. Even though video is another model, it worked super well with my mac. Make sure to divide your screws during the process, there’s A LOT of them.

I'm now typing this comment with the new keyboard. Took me 6 hours. I almost cried at the end.
I counted 67 screws on the keyboard. That wasn't what took me long. 3 of the old keyboard were rusted. I had to cut the old keyboard away.
The keyboard ribbon took me hours! I don't own tweezers. Reconnecting that ribbon almost made me cry from frustration.
I also ripped off the whole connector of the fan. And I don't have soldering equipment.
Still, everything (aside from the fan) works well. Thank you for this detailed video.

Your lucky you got all the screws out. I had to leave a few in but without their heads as I had to rip the keyboard off… the screws were rounded and corroded it was a lost cause with about 5-6 of them…

Thank you very much for the video. It goes through every step, one by one. I followed the instructions and replaced the keyboard on a Macbook Pro on which a cup of coffee had spilled, causing some of the keys to not work. I have two suggestions. First, to list the tools needed for this work, specifically the need for a Torx 6 screwdriver. I had to run to a box store to find one of those after I had taken off the back cover. A minor point is that when reassembling the computer, the step for putting back the microphone that is glued to the case. Overall, I highly recommend this video.

Some additional tips: use a small tape for the keyboard and backlight cables to help pulling them into the slots, better than accidentally bending them. Also, might need to perform a SMC reset after it's all done in order for the keyboard backlight to work. Thanks for the walkthrough, especially for the tip on the mic!

Btw the subwoofer on the left edge can stay, there is no need to remove it. You can work around its cable easily when screwing in the new keyboard.

Thanks bro! If you're having trouble connecting the KB cable, try attaching a piece of tape on the ribbon. If you bend the ribbon in the slot you can pull the ribbon in it's socket with the tape.

      @ThatAwesomeUsername 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@CakraDiaz Thats quite dangerous since you can bend one of the inside pins or pieces on the motherboard. Most new cables wont even come with the tape at the end now so you have to improvise.

    Excellent video.
    Thank for taking the time.
Attaching the ribbon on the keyboard is definitely the most difficult part.
Especially if its's a new (straight) ribbon.
Try using a pencil eraser to hold it while you bend it into position.

I went through this process and replaced the keyboard. The original problem was that there was a spill and half the keyboard would not work. There was significant corrosion on the connections and some were very difficult to detach and re-attach. Everything went back together and the keyboard seems to work but the track pad no longer clicks though it does move the cursor. I connected an external wireless mouse and that works. Any ideas about why the track pad would stop clicking after this procedure?

Hey bro what's up! I have great news haha I finally take the my cargo and test it immediately. Actually when reach the my second cargo I mean the contact cleaner firstly cleaning the motherboard then installing the keyboard but anyway maybe it's not a dust or some what the connectors fault of inside said and test it without cleaning the contact cleaner. And guess what the 2012 model A1278 keyboard full of working finally! I'am really so happy the fix it finally. But first my Caps-Lock key working the reserve :D then I'am resetting the PRAM-NVRAM resetting it's fix it too! All keys are working flawlessly now. When you said the it's absolutely not a keyboard connectors problem just a keyboard problem you exactly right. Your luck comes to 3 my luck comes to 2 :) And after the all of this conclusions we know the Apple Hardware Tests not as trustly at all sadly... I hope the my tests helping the some other ones and thank you again the your time and effort bro.

If you can not reconnect the ribbon wire from the new keyboard into the connector on the logic board, or if it does not go deep enough, use a piece of tape on the side of the ribbon to pull it/push it into the connector. This was the most challenging connection I have there.

I am very grateful for the video. A piece of constructive criticism? Whenever you know your hands and arms will block the view, POINT AT where the action will take place BEFOREHAND. That’s the main difficulty, not knowing exactly where you’re screwing the pieces back in (or off), not the actual act of screwing them back. In name of clarity for the ones who have never opened a MacBook Pro before (hmmm,,, all of us, since we actively looked up this video), I just with the part where the cables are disconnected from the motherboard was a little bit slower, so we can see how some of the trickier parts are reconnected/disconnected. Again, it’s constructive criticism and I am super grateful you’ve gone through the trouble of making this video.

Buy a new keyboard and install then like a joke same issues appear and still don't work. I have try everything; reinstall OS, keyboard settings, mouse keys etc. But when I connect to any usb keyboard even non-apple it's work like a charm even re-mapping the keys like CMD - Option like Apple keyboard and it's same the screen keyboard have non-issue. I'am afraid it's like mainboard issue I have no idea how get damaged. MacBook or Keyboard never touch the water or spilling. I'am thinking buy a other new keyboard and test again if it's failed again I have no damn idea. What you think? Ty.

So something like this has happened to me before. I had installed 2 keyboards and both were BAD. The 3rd one worked just fine. I can almost guarantee you that if it's not your keyboard connector that you should inspect then just replace the keyboard and make sure to buy a replacement from a reputable reseller.

Hi, thank you for answer. I'am already buy a new one and it's 2012 model ı guess it' same but not test yet cause don't reached me already. Btw I'am run the Apple Hardware Test with Extented selected then 1.30 hours later I have got an error like this 4SNS/ 1 / 40000000: VPOR - 13.020 and searching this error code it's Failed Sensor. But when I ran the this test the usb keyboard connected like first 20-30 minutes then I disconnected. And I ran the test again without keyboard or any usb devices except my flash drive cause it's have the AHT, same Extented selected and after 1.30 minutes completely no error all passed. Btw two test ran the ac cable on. And I ran the test again even ac cable detaced directly on battery and flash drive but not selected Extented option after 3 minutes again no errors. İt' really strange. I have NVRAM reset too but it's same old keyboard. My plan is when reached the may second keyboard before I ınstalling I'am use the electronic contact sprey my mainboard then ınstall and see what happen. I'am gonna notify you when I have done bro. Btw my Mac all of cleaned, the fan, the mainboard, all other things even change thermal paste and others but anyway cleaning the contact sprey too all over the board. What you think?

Did it a second time because someone spilled a drink on my macbook. The ribbon is a pain but it is working now ! The Macbook wasn't booting. But before changing the logic board change the keyboard, there is a great chance that the liquid didn't even reach the logic board and the mac is not sarting becuse of the faulty keyboard.

My macbook pro 2011 wont charge after reassembly. The only thing I am not 100% sure I re-connect perfectly is DC-in power board. It says battery not charging: power source: charger... so I am not losing battery percentage when connected to charger but

    • @GRIBSOFT

It's hard to say without looking at it but I would take the logicboard out and check the DC-in connector and just reseat everything. Also while out, give the Logicboard an alcohol rub down.

Ok don't panic, flip the Macbook over, open it, unplug the keyboard ribbon cable and read this guide on how to turn the macbook on without a keyboard ( www.insidemylaptop.com/turn-on-macbook-pro-laptop-without-power-button-locating-power-on-pads/ ) if it comes on (after shorting the power pins found at that link) then try reinserting the keyboard ribbon again, if that doesn't fix the issue then they keyboard you installed is faulty and you will have to perform the replacement again, also once a new keyboard arrives you can always test it by just plugging it in and using it's power button to start the mac before installing it.

Anyway yesterday before i test my mac to turn on, i have issue with the fan port, when i pull the fan cable, the port is detached from the logic board and then i try to put it back with soldering iron. does it affect my mac to turn on? • @GRIBSOFT
      @GRIBSOFT  7 ปีที่แล้ว

No it shouldn't effect to turn it on but it will shut down with in 90 seconds without the fan. Do you have the charger plugged in? do you see a light on the charging cable if so what color? Also, have you tried to plug the battery in and turning it on? If you forgot to plug in the AC converter under the logic-board and your battery is depleted it will never come on.
