  • In driving one of the last V12 powered, non-hybrid cars on offer, MotoMan poses the question: Is the end of the line for the @MercedesBenz Maybach S 680? Then, from behind the wheel as well as the back seat, he presents the master class that is understated luxury in the @mbusa Maybach Manufaktur build of this specific Mercedes Maybach S680.

Love the opening statement about history.... I'm a retired automotive engineer - from the age of 15. I'm now 68 and retired.
Today it's all about making a product as profitable as possible - rather than produce a quality product that people actually enjoy using.

Indeed, I'm looking at a RX500 (new model) as an outright purchase since retiring. I've always leased German brands while working. But their quality is certainly not as good as 10-20yrs ago.

Love your pushback. A certain publication that used to have a big TH-cam channel has been condescendingly shoving their EV solution down everyone's throats for years now to the point that I've become borderline indifferent about cars. I digress.
I don't care if being overly-indulgent is frowned upon these days - the S680 is a romantic at heart. I just wish Mercedes still made the S Coupe. Anyone still defending the V12 is a hero in my book.

The number of V12s sold is minuscule so the regulators could give them a pass and it would be like a drop in the emissions bucket. I doubt manufacturers would rush to put 2.0 liter twelve cylinders into sports cars. S coupé with a v12 would be nice to see.

The details you mention are of the utmost quality - no doubt. And V12 is a value in its own league. But all Mercedeses-turned-into-Maybachs lack the most important thing, I believe, the statement cars should have first and foremost: the uniqueness of style, originality, ingenuity, subtlety, finesse, etc.

I’d say add the 10° rear steering but lower the 12 cylinder displacement and offset the weight and power reduction with electric motor(s) that maintain the low end torque but bring to the table a carbon foot below some four cylinders. Yes a plug would help this cause but at least you’ll have the purr of the V12. 17:00

  • @PassportBrosBusinessClass

Electric Vehicles ultimately solve all of the issues with the Maybach and Rolls Royce.
#1 The electric motors create a dead silent ride - aside from government mandated noise makers to protect civilians.
#2 The electric motors create a shift-less, seamless transition from standstill to high speed to standstill.
#3 The longer floor of these cars provides more opportunity for battery capacity and thus longer ranges.
#4 These cars were already big and heavy: now they have an excuse to be bigger and heavier.
#5 No V12 means you get instant, peak-torque, excellent handling, electric steering, autonomous driving and HIGH FUEL EFFICIENCY more than 90 mpge. You also get higher reliability.

My thinking about 12 cylinder engines is their place as “the point” of the expensive exotic car. Ain’t nobody really *need* that engine, but people want it. Its the desirability element. For these kind of cars how does desirability sustain if its got functionality the same powertrain as any other vehicle (EV) just with a bigger battery? The ethos gets a bit dashed

They collect watches for their mechanical beauty. Car collectors do the same thing. So then why the hell do they insist on having a Best Buy TV screen center in the cabin? We want beautiful nobs and switches that feel fantastic to the touch. A set of bezzels and guauges made from the finest watch makers in all of Europe on a mountain top clock makers workshop...crap like that. I don’t think its a big deal that V12’s are being phased out by automakers, as for at least the last 15 years, they have been inaccessible to almost all driving enthusiasts. The only people losing out are wealthy business people and celebrities, who probably won’t notice the different between a v8 and v12, or even a hybridised v6, both of which are more than powerful enough for normal use. The stricter emissions requirements responsible for the end of the V12 have also been brought on by cheating and dirty tactics of the manufacturers, very clearly evident in the dieselgate scandal, proving automakers need to be kept in check.

That´s a wonderful car although i think it´s in the high end of what anybody would pay for an Sclass.... i mean, Maybach.
Your last statement about future of mobility.... in my eyes it´s all about energy availability and possible solutions. They want only electric because it´s the most simple solution in many ways but development and engineers are quite stubborn so i can imagine a future with various technology solutions being inevitable. Right now we are seeing it with the evolution of the EV car market which seems to be in a hard spot. China is overflooded completely with brands and vehicles and the industry will canibalize itself to the point of engding up in 3 to 5 major groups just as it has happened in Europe and USA. The issue is getting into the mind of the average consumer which cares about the basics. Doing that with a vehicle that gives you less versatility, higher depreciation and higher cost of purchase doesn´t make sense and that´s why most people are going to keep their cars way longer or buy hybrids instead. Toyota it´s already years talking about this point but politicians being politicians still think that they know better than anybody else. Again, in my view we are going straight to a multi-solution future without a doubt and it´s the best that can happen just so people in power don´t adquire too much power into our lives. The more solutions, the better.
Oh and i have the feeling that in 5 to 10 years synthetic oils / biofuels / hydrogen / etc... will start to be a real option because the "only BEV" solution has way too many hurdles to function for everybody. Either that or we go straight to a dictatorship that doesn´t allow private transport and we end up in a society like the 1850´s in no time.... time to start buying horses i guess.

Mercedes makes the best V12's because because nobody made more of them. They are the most reliable V12's and the aftermarket equivalent of a small block Chevy in V12 land with performance specialists like RennTech leading the way. 0-60 is only the beginning of MB V12's performance. After 100mph is where they really stretch out past the V8's and EV's. All hand crafted with the surreal smoothness to balance a coin on top. So coveted that the elite V12 AMG's are already appreciating. 🪙
