I am extremely fortunate to have owned both. I bought my w204 edition 507 C63 2 door coupe, brand new in 2014. After my partner falling pregnant in 2020, I went out & purchased a 2017 w205 C63 S which was supposed to replace the w204 507. A year later, I still had both. I came to the realisation that I’d be an absolute fool to sell the 507, so instead, I sold the w205 & bought my girlfriend a VW Golf to lug the kids around in.
After running both w204 & w205 side by side for a year, I came to the conclusion that the build quality on the w204 is FAR superior & budget cuts on the w205 felt very apparent. The w205 definitely had a more superior chassis, yet the w204 felt far more of an event to drive with instant throttle response & a sound track to die for.
In conclusion… I’ve decided that I’ll never sell my w204 edition 507. I’ll have other cars around it, but the w204 will remain with me until I depart this life.
Legend got the w204 100% stock no mods, pristine condition…. I just know what you mean. ❤

Hey man, I own a w204 c300, im looking to make the upgrade to the w204 c63 within the next two years im from Canada so the car market is a little crazy right now gotta wait for it to adjust. are there any major takeaways you could let me know about? my major concern is the gas and maintenance. If there's anything you could let me know id appreciate it. I'm only 20 years old but this is a dream car of mine and I work hard enough to deserve it I told myself within two years I will have one and I even made an autotrader post my wallpaper to remind me. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

When your 507 is in pristine condition, you could get around 70+80k € here in Germany for it. A non performance 204 coupe is at around 40k in good condition.

The W204 C63 AMG has always been my favourite AMG to date, sure the C63 S AMG with the bi-turbo 4.0L V8 is quicker and has slightly more power but nothing beats that raw 6.2L V8 sound, the looks of the car is aggressive and the sound it makes is absolutely euphoric, it truly is one of a kind, it was an absolute wild beast, people buy V8’s for the noise and boy did this thing deliver, it is the last of its nature, and seeing now that the current C63 S AMG uses a 2.0L turbo borrowed from the A45/CLA 45 S mixed with hybrid technology it has completely lost its soul and should never have been called a C63 as it tarnishes the name of the car, I don’t care how much faster it is, when a car loses its V8 and that orgasmic sound it loses its soul, it could be the fastest car on Earth for all I care but if it sounds like a Camry it’s total crap.

@@RossReviewsau Because it is ... together with the MB 5.5 Biturbo and Audi 4.0L Biturbo (in the earlier RS6 and RS7) and 4.2 FSI in the RS5 and obviously the E92 M3.
Jokes aside the M156 is the best sounding German V8 by FAR. The others i mentioned are just great on their own but the M156 is like the cherry on the top.
@@DarkSession6208 I'd say the Audi Rs 4.2 is an amazing sounding motor, different than the m156. Hard to compare and this is coming from someone with a 507 sedan. I plan on grabbing an B7 Rs4 to keep the 507 company. The W205's never really interested me, just seemed to synthetic.
The old supercharged M113 sounded glorious too.
The 6.2 v8 will always be an all time favourite and will always be missed

This was my take from owning both cars. The W204 wagon was 100% stock and I was so happy with how it sounded as is. When I picked up the W205 after first service it needed downpipes,full exhaust and tunes and then tractions became an issue. I'll be looking at the E63s next since the new C63s is a 4cyl and the E class gets murdered by depreciation hahahah.

I'm surprised how cheap they are - around $35,000 will get you a fairly low mileage example in NZ. I guess they are notoriously unreliable, and very expensive to maintain - so that'll be why they have depreciated so much.
Are you kidding me? They are still half of their original value at over 10 years old. And they are extremely reliable 2011 and up. Maintenance is key. There are many accounts of owners who have had no trouble whatsoever. I have a 2012 with 21,000 miles and have absolutely no issues so far
@@jasonrabe1664 Good that you have had a good experience, but these were way over a hundred grand in NZ when they came out, so more like 1/3rd or less of their original value - and they are notoriously unreliable like all of Mercedes during the last couple of decades have become - again not every car is going to have issues, and you can definitely mitigate those issues by looking after it properly - but they ain't no bulletproof Lexus, that's for sure. Still a hell of a lot of car/fun for the relatively reasonable price though.
I get what you're saying but I disagree on the Bulletproof portion. There are some bad Mercedes models chiefly the lower entry level and the junk made in alabama. Also the Daimler Chrysler merge was quite a disaster as well. I have a E550 which was after Chrysler was gone and after 11 years only have changed a light bulb and the starter after warranty was out. It has been reliable as a Camrys I've had in the past except with bad gas mileage.
Great review of the C63’s, Ross. The W205 sure is the nicer car but I’d happily have either of them. What a great sound they both have. Sure beats a boring electric car any day. 0-100 was very impressive on both cars. Both are all round great looking cars. Very impressive. Thanks for the review.

Having spent an extensive amount of time in many AMGs, the w205 c63s is without doubt the most fun amg I've ever driven

The w204 you’re driving has the performance pack which came with 480hp. You can tell this by the intake manifold which is a darker grey.. similar to the 507 and the bs. Red callipers.. although never a good way of checking as many people change the colour. And the half leather half alcantara steering wheel. The performance pack came with forged internals from the sls.
I pickup my w205 c63s sedan in two days. I was skeptical about spending more money than w204s but this video is giving my head a clear conscience. Can’t wait!
Cant wait to get my w205 and upgrade the turbos + a stage 2 tune. I loved the W204 as well.
I had a 2017 AMG c63s bought in 2020. A day after, Kobe passed. COVID lockdown happened. I sold it 1 year later. I literally repurchased a 2015 c63s Edition 1 with only 14K miles. I am on TOP of the world! Last of the V8's!
I own a w205 c63s and I feel it is an absolute buzz even without the tune it is fast.
My dad owned a w204 and it was awesome as well
But the length of the power band on the twin turbo is mind blowing.

Just a simple flash tune and some headers on the w204 and you've already exceeded the performance of the newer car. And the sound as well.
Got my 507 Edition w204 coupe atm and love it to death. Was the same price at the time as a w205 pre facelift coupe. Drove the both for about a week and decided the w204 is a better car for me. Almost the same power but prefer the hydraulic steering of the 204, sound is way better.. even though the 205 isn't as bad ... and it looks just timeless. Best decision ive ever made. Sure you can get more power out of a 205 for cheap but all u could need on a 204 is headers and you can get it up to almost 600hp NA.. just perfect car in every aspect imho
The 507 will also go up in value whereas the w205 will go down. I also really don’t like the pre facelift w205 interior
I traded in my Porsche 911 40th anniversary for a 2009 W204 and I absolutely love it . Still have it now and absolutely never had any problem with it. The acceleration and sound are incredible!
Im all about the w204.. i have owned my coupe for 3 years now... thought about upgrading to w205... but couldn't let the w204 go... w205 was great to drive and fast...but was missing the antisocial element the w204 has... long live the M156!

@@Top-Striker I have had 0 issues with my w204... mine is low km... only 41,000km but I haven't had anything go wrong... if you can get a face-lift model you don't need to worry about the headbolt issue... but these cars are built well.. on the gas side it's not to bad... but you don't buy these cars for gas mileage... think of it as part of the cars personality how fast it drinks lol
@@the-moist-walnut6737 wow yours is in mint condition, I would be picking one up off autotrader hopefully around the 35k-40k range with less than 130,000 KM. by face lift model you mean 2012 and newer right? (P31 development). i guess the most important thing for me would be good grippy tires and winters for canada snow. estimate how much do you think you would spend yearly if you daily'd the car? on gas. good way to think of it tho. but the gas wont stop me.
@@Top-Striker first thing I did was put PS4S tyres on.. seriously a good tyre for the car... I'm from NZ so we don't get a super cold winter and I haven't needed to get snow tires so can't help you there sorry. Fuel depends on how you drive really... our gas is expensive... $3.30 per ltr atm for 98 octaine and I only drive mine in the weekend... but a full tank will get me roughly 400-450km range with normal driving mixed with some fun. Yes 2012 and up is the face-lift... I have the p31 package and is Def worth it in my opinion.

Hey Bro, nice comparison and nice video. I'm lucky to own both of them and I love both and can't say which one I love more. Their both very special in their own way. I would say the 205 more power in all rpms and more precise handling, the 204 gives me definitely more emotions. Instead of buying an newer w205 C63 better go for an older one with lower price and get an w204 as well. I highly recommend that. 🤗💯

A great fair and balanced comparison review of these desirable cars Jono. I'm picking what you are putting down in regards to if you have the means, most definitely get the 205. The 204 is dated as you say, but would still be a hoot to drive, especially if tuned also...

As a 2012 C204 C63 and 2017 C205 C63s owner, I daily my dp/intake/tune 205 but my 204 with ROW airbox/LTH/catless and res delete + ECU/Trans tune is the fun, fast weekend freak. It’s only 2, almost 3 tenths faster from 60-130 than the 205 but BOY is the overall experience so much more visceral, imo.

I have my w204 for 12 years and put 170K KM's on it and I have thought about the w205 a few times and you are right the interior and luxury is next level after the W204 BUT TBH I think there is too many think that can go wrong/break with the W205. I have had mine tuned and headers done + K&N air filters at about 100K KM's and its putting down about 600 break at the crank so sounds and performance is great... just cant see a reason to upgrade. And yes as you mentioned it can scare you which is why i still love to drive it! 🙂

The sound of the w204 is unmatched by any car.
Amg did a hell of a job to make a turbo w205 sound the way it does but i advice anyone who has a w205 you must add aftermarket downpipes it transforms the sound much better.

I had the same thought, the 204 is a work of art with the big n/a engine but the 205 all round is just way way nicer car and nothing could logically say otherwise not even the claim that the 204 sounds much better because surprisingly it really doesn't despite the newer car being only a 4.0 litre, it's actually less raspy than the 6.2 n/a and maintains that deep AMG tone much like the 5.5 TT which in my opinion actually sounds nicer than all the engines. The 204 has character but it's engine and and gearbox can't hang with the modern turbo competition out there, it gets smoked. The M177 engine has a lot more to offer and is reliable up to 1000bhp, you can't knock it.

solid review, I do agree the 205 has more advanced engineering etc.. but you just cant touch the intangibles of the "last of its kind" nature of the 204. Of course, the sound.. but also the sensation of the big coupe old school benz carved from a block of granite feel of the 204 is untouchable in my opinion

I had a W204 and I updated with a W205. The worst decision I have ever made. The W205 is more luxury for sure but the W204 with that M156 V8 naturally aspirated engine makes it more reliable and with an amazing and better sound as well.
I've been dailying my S205 C63s wagon for 3 years, almost 40,000 km later it still puts a smile on my face whenever I fire up the engine.
The fun aspect of 205 generation AMG cars is sure second to none. The car looks good and expensive both inside and out. Tech still feels modern while maintaining physical buttons for the most used features, unlike newer cars today where you have to do everything on a screen. The engine is just a beast, sounds awesome and packs a big punch.
The car isn't perfect, though. It might look expensive, the interior squeaks alot on bumpy roads. Tire noise is quite loud, can be tiresome on long journeys. Manual downshifts are a bit slow. The LSD and transmission can be jerky at times. Suspension is way too harsh even in comfort mode for normal use.
All in all, it's a great car with minor faults.

I’ve had the 2017 W205 sedan for 6 years now, just clicked 34k, stock as it sounds great and it’s a fast car. With 700nm of torque at around 1800 rpm, no traction to get a low 0-100 as you proved with the tuned one, more wheel spin. If it had all wheel drive it would be a 3.5 second car. Drive normally and you get around 10 litre/100km. It’s actually fairly cheap to run. Nothing to upgrade to, so I’ll be keeping it for sometime yet. Sure the new M3/M4 BMW’s are a great car if only they had the AMG soundtrack. 😊
What's the reliability like for w205 c63? Thinking of getting one for a weekend car. Cheers.
@@Lxzandr hi, it’s been and still is a great car. Driven normally it’s fairly frugal on the petrol for the type of car approx 10litre/100km.
No issues with the car, change the oil and filter every 12 months as I don’t do the kms. Only replaced the original tyres at around the 34000km mark, still original brakes and battery. Driven normally it idles along to speed as the power and torques requires very little peddle input or revs. Obviously buy one from a reputable person. You,lol be able to tell if the car has been abused. You can’t really thrash them unless it’s been tracked many many times by a professional driver. Mine been a great car and I’ll just keep it it, can’t part with it for anything else for the price.

Yes the w204 is a little dated now, but simply get it up to date and it’s the perfect mix between RAW car and classy AMG goodness. Add apple CarPlay, maybe interior ambient lighting, update the steering wheel and hey, it’s perfect
don't forget the C63 M156 comes crippled from factory in the 451hp variant, tune opens the throttle all the way and you're at ~520hp...no AFR change ...no over rev ...safe mod to bring the engine up to its designed power

If I'm correct, the model you're driving looks like it has the P31 option. Forged internals bringing it to 481 hp. Then there's the 507 trim, bringing it too.. yep, you guessed it - 507 hp

You didn't even review the 205 coupe, you would have loved it even more. 205 might be double the money but there's a reason (especially if you get the 205 S coupe) it's gorgeous compared to any 204 and built uniquely from its base model counterpart unlike the 204's that share so much with a C200 base model chassis car and that's why a 205 coupe costs so much more money. They are exclusively built from down up. 205 all round is a way way nicer car and nothing could logically say otherwise not even the claim that the 204 sounds much better because surprisingly it really doesn't despite the newer car being only a 4.0 litre, it's actually less raspy than the 6.2 n/a and maintains that deep AMG tone much like the 5.5 TT which actually sounds better than all of them. The 204 has character but it's engine and and gearbox doesn't hang with the modern turbo competition out there. I'm sure you must have noticed as well as having so much more torque that the gearbox is responding to your paddle shifts significantly quicker in the 205 as well. Things like this make or a break car when you're serious about performance and anyone that is will not choose the 204 over a 205 if they can afford it.

The upcoming AMG C63 (4-cylinder-turbo + electric motor) is in my opinion a shame compared to these two "old" AMG C63's. In my mind an AMG C 63 needs a V8 under the bonet. NO V8 = no AMG C63. The upcoming C63 has soundspeakers :( and the car is really heavy :(

W205 i everything what the 04 people wanted just to hear what the motor would sound like with some boost! They made some supercharger kit for em tho so its nots hard to boost but for the newer one dreams and prayer was answered a boosted one from factory cant beat that both are phenomenal machines! That will stand for many many years to come! #nodebate the newwer model is very as costly as the older one so which ever you get it will be the same power speed and one more fancy but they both mop.the floor on the road iykyk!😅 🇯🇲 i will get the newer one because of bolts on an easier power making option etc!! Changes some factory parts and you already unleash 100hp and 100ft lb of torque without a tune imagine what a tune is gonna do!!
My 204 is pretty much the twin to the one you test here, and no way would I trade to a 205 - the NA 6.2 is the brute, I much prefer the nature and the looks of it :)

@@Killswitch1991 If money was no limit they'd pick the E63 which offers everything the 4.0 C63 offers and more. The price difference between the 204 and 205 is negligible and becomes even more so when you consider the running costs of the M156 so your argument that people choose the C63 because it's cheaper is laughable
@@t8506 meh the e63 is nice but it looks a bit boring and understated, it's not to everyones taste and not everyone wants AWD. They also don't sound as nice due to a different manifold design although they perform great having bigger twin scroll turbo's as standard. The 205 c63s coupe looks far more aggressive and something special compared to any other c63 made, completely new chassis and body panels compared to a base model C class they're even longer and wider in chassis length and run monster wide fitment wheels (up to 325 tyre width rears will fit with rolled/flared arches as standard on both front and back which no 204 got and neither did the 205 saloon or wagon). None of the other cars were built anywhere near as exclusively as the c205 63. It's only the 205 coupe that they built very different in the c63 lineup, it's just something else separating it even further than it's base model counterpart than any of the other cars. This is why c63s coupe's held their value so high even after all these years. My c63s coupe set me back £50k used but I could still pick up a decent 204 right now for £20k.... I'd argue that's a hell of a lot of difference in price. You can pick up a cheaper 205 for around £30k but it will be a non-S and not likely a coupe and half the time will also be a car that is accident recorded and repaired or high mileage and not in the best of condition. Trying to pretend like a 204 will end up setting you back the cost of a nice c63s just isn't true. Can pick up 204's as cheap as £15k now with still a clean title although maybe higher miles due to age. The only 204's that are still expensive are 507's but 20-25k will land you a very nice 204 in today's market.

I’ve got the 205 with stage 2 tune and have had it for about a year and still not needing to increase the power. It’s perfect at that 500-530rwhp. Sounds amazing too.. sometimes I wish it didn’t crackle and pop as much

Can you compare between the E55 and the E63 (W212 facelift)? Both has a 5.5L V8 with different forms of forced injection. Would be fun to see how the power delivers.
Wow, I can’t believe this has never occurred to me. I have a few AMG’s including the E55, however I never considered the fact that both share one very sexy trait; 5.5L V8’s with forced induction. The 5.5L Biturbo E63 is undoubtedly next on my list. Thank you for helping me with that perspective.

W204 is stock minus a middle muffler I believe, the w205 is tuned with an exhaust.. pretty minor stuff on both
I just bought mine (w204) and watching this video makes me tear up only imagining all I’m gonna do with this car

Nailed this review right on the head. I picked up my 2019 c63s sedan about a month ago and I don’t think you can buy a better car for the money. Even compared to the w204 just like you said, it’s just better in every way except maybe sound 😂

20 years old here, currently own the w204 c300 looking to make the upgrade to the w204 c63 within the next 2 years. hopefully, the prices drop a little the market is crazy right now here in Canada. my only main issue is gas and maintenance, if anyone owns/owned the w204 c63 i'd appreciate some pointers and honest opinions on how the maintenance and gas is. I am only 20 years old but this is my dream car and I work long and hard so I do believe i deserve it.
Maintenance and gas are expensive. But that’s exactly why you buy this car. I own a coupé 👌
Not many V8s can hold a candle to the sound of the M156 with an IPE...if any.

The 4.0 V8 exhaust sounds good with after market exhaust 😅 but I will take the 6.3 any day
After market Downpipes transforms the sound on w205. i bet the one on this review has had em changed.
The W204 interior is now dated & u have you really high rev it to get the thunderous sound fuel will go faster than a stabbed rat!

Not a Merc or a big Euro guy, but W204 is definitely cooler with that 6.2.
But bugger them both. Older Merc's ooze class and charm that modern that W204 or W205 aren't even in the same postcode. I'd rather have the older 5.5L in a E55 AMG. And they are just more subtle and suave.

If we’re talking 205 I think I prefer the cls63 the only thing that holds me Back a bit from the 204 is that the interior is getting pretty dated or I would get it in a heart beat💔
If you get the 507 edition they have a much better interior but yes still slowly dating
