Ageing players, Charlton on his last legs trying to hold the team together, and Best p***ed off and always on the p**s because united wouldn't invest in younger players. Birds and Booze were a far better option for him ! Within 3 seasons United would be relegated, and although Busby was a great manager, football had moved on but he didn't, so a lot of the blame for the teams demise lies at his door sadly.
Good points but Best was not boozing because United would not invest. He was boozing because he was an alcoholic escapist. If he had not had that excuse it would have been something else....he was a truly great footballer but an unreliable colleague. You are right about Busby though. He let things slip and really was the culprit. Did you know he was 59 when he retired? Absurdly young but in fact he should have gone in 1968....his time was up.
I remember an interview in which Best gave on TV just after he walked away at United and he said he 'pleaded' with Busby to get some younger players in as early as 1970 as he could see the direction the team were heading but Busby loved the team so much he wouldn't change it. United no longer had a good youth or reserve set up and were taking thrashings from newly promoted teams like Ipswich 4-0 and a young Crystal Palace team 5-0. It was tragic to witness. I was there at Portman Road that day and when relegation eventually came it seemed like a relief to start things afresh which they did but of course it took many more years to get to the top again.

Sadly it was the start of the end of the great Man Utd side of the 60s but the start of a great derby team!
