I binged episode 13 thru 24 yesterday!! I'm amazed at how your videos make me at peace!! I totally understand about your anxiety!! (((hugs))) thanks for all you do!! ✌🐢
I am sooo damn glad you are taking time off guys. It will be good for all of you - especially the boys. You can immerse into the local culture as well. A few months of something totally different will be the best medicine. HUGS and onto a better New Year.
Taking a break off the boat is 100% understandable & essential. I hope the repair team is up to the task. Looking forward to your family post of your shore based adventures in Japan.
Trauma bonds! A slow motion recall stop in time, pulling together as a team, united by a stressful experience, a shocking negative turning into a vivid positive. Not the terrible experience but what’s learned. So happy you were all safe.
Merry Christmas and the most wonderful New Year to ya'll!!! So glad you are safe. You've been through a lot and keep winning. Keep up the AWESOMESAUCE!
Hard times literally create growth! The team bonding you speak of, is exactly what happens after a hard time. I coach high school athletics and when there is a hard week or rough competition, we all grow STRONGER and closer. And makes us more unbeatable. ❤
Three days into a two-week trip in Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada, the engine compartment on our boat caught fire. The ironic part; just two days before, my then-girlfriend (now wife of 18 years) and I had been listening to a Mayday call on the VHF radio. I explained to her that it wasn’t a Mayday, but a Pan-pan, and explained the differences and how Maydays are actually pretty rare. Fast forward to the fire, I turned to my wife and without explaining to her what was happening, told her, “Go up front and drop the anchor.” Then I grabbed the VHF and automated into, “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday...” Her face completely dropped. It’s a great story now, but at the time, it felt pretty surreal. What surprised me most was how calm I stayed and how I automatically went through the steps to secure the boat and people. You really never know how you’ll react in an emergency, but I’d rehearsed an emergency situation in my head enough times that it fortunately came instinctively. Now I'm a boatless boater living vicariously though TH-camrs.
I’m so very sorry for all you’ve been through with this accident!! Glad you are all safe and sound !Thank goodness the boat is reparable and you’ll be back soon!
Have a fantastic Christmas with your boys. Thank you for including me in all your incredible journeys. Enjoy your time ashore I hope your concert is great. Good luck getting everything fixed to your satisfaction. Lots of love from this 75 year old grandmother, you make me feel like part of your family. Christine in Paphos Cyprus ❤❤❤❤
I don't know if you actually read my comments. But... Living last 25 years in FL with many major hurricanes I can attest when you make it through the big ones with friends, neighbors, even strangers you become a special kind of family! Strangers became instant family! Women helping me with my 3 young daughters will always be aunts! Men helping restore our roofs or power and taking time to play with all children will be uncles or papa "so & so". Yes scary things definitely make people close!
Take your time and do what’s best for your family. I will most definitely be watching your videos. Thank you for inviting us along in your journey getting to know your family. I just love the sound of the little ones giggles. We will be praying for you. God bless y’all from Haysville, Kansas, USA.
Riley and Elena along with your beautiful boys, I wish you a magical new year! I know 2025 will be your best year yet. You are the perfect example of how family, love and commitment can conquer all! Please check in with us over the next couple of months!! ❤❤❤
I'm a big believer in things happen for a reason. Not saying this was a good thing but maybe something good will come from it. Wish you guys the best. Will definitely keep watching
I hate to revisit, but I walked in to find my 28 year old son unalived. My other son and my good friend were living there, also, and it has brought us all 3, so much closer. Especially my living son and I. But my friend, also. They are the only ones who understand the shock and horror of the event, even though I can rely on other friends and family for comfort. The three of us don’t live together anymore, but when we get together, there is an unspoken bond that we share. A very special understanding and connection that I’m so glad we share.
Grateful you are safe. It was a traumatic event for you all. Your boys are phenomenal. Just amazing how they traverse your ever changing life. Rest. Recoup. Swing. Be well. ❤
Yes to the bonding and the team!! Nowhere near the same experience but I travelled Mexico for 2 weeks back in 2020 with 80 people!! A small group of us have bonded for life after that brief period!! It’s something that happened that no-one else in the world will understand as they weren’t there with you!! Enjoy your well deserved break!! We’ll all be here waiting!!x
In reference to a traumatic event bringing people closer, YES! My husband and I welcomed our second child into the world a week ago. We had both of our children at home, unassisted, and my goodness it has strengthened our bond more than I could have ever imagined. Although these experiences were planned and not traumatic, they were definitely hard and required loads trust and faith. We are so happy you are taking a much needed break, sending you all of our love!
How wonderful, glad that it was a GOOD trauma, and not a bad one. I, too, had our second child at home with a midwife, tho, and it was so relaxed and calm and beautiful. We were only minutes from a hospital, but we never needed it. Kiss that brand now baby for me! How blessed it was to be born at home, like they used to do for all the past years that humanity's existed!
@@GwenArlene8181 amazing! What a beautiful and transformative experience, we are so blessed! There is definitely a lot of mental preparation to do it at home but isn’t it so magical to be in your own space?! That’s so great that you were close to a hospital, mostly for piece of mind, we were close as well, a little further this time around though. Did you have a birthing pool? Those newborn kisses are unreal, that’s all I’ve been doing all day every day. You’re right, it’s so cool to do things like they have always been done! It’s brought our family together and there is nothing sweeter! Thank you for the love 🥰
YES! to the bond that happens after a traumatic event! Living in Manhattan during 9/11...whereby the people from my circle of friends struggled to account for all those working in lower Manhattan, The owner of our Jersey City sailing club took "roll call" and reported out as everyone was accounted for...bonded for life.
Adversity builds bonds like no other. After almost 30 yrs in NSWRFS, and some unbelievably difficult times, particularly over the past five years, I can tell you that serious challenges don't just affect individuals, but create cohesion and strength in entire communities. The effects on teams such as brigades is even more noticeable, as with the right leadership and understanding they will build unbreakable bonds similar to families. The opposite is also very true. Best wishes for the New Year, enjoy your break, and love each other.
About the shared trauma! US Marine here! Yes, this is why the military become so close, like you would fly across the world if someone needed you. I’ve also experienced this as a Travel RN working in shitty Hospitals.
Any trauma, no matter what it is, brings people closer together. Sadly a lot have faced different traumatic events in their lives and it helps to know we are not alone
So glad you're staying in Japan, you'll get to do a lot more land based things in that beautiful country now and even happier you still get to go skiing. We'll miss you and cannot wait for the boat to be back on the water, in the meantime have a well deserved break and de-stress. To be fair, you couldn't be in a more beautiful place to do so, that forest house is stunning! Thank you for the update x
Enjoy your much deserved break!! Everything happens for a reason and the boat is definitely a hardship. But you guys deserve this much needed break!! ❤❤
I was heartbroken to hear about the sailing accident and the challenges your family has faced. Please know that you are in my thoughts during this difficult time. The strength and courage you have shown are truly admirable, and I hope you find comfort in the love and support of those around you.
Take care of yourselves. Give yourselves lots of time to heal. As I’ve learned in therapy and meditation, everything we experience, we experience it IN our bodies, not some where out there. Glad you were all safe.
Merry Christmas to you both, the boys and your friends on board. Your sailing experiences and adventures, both good and bad, have been a revelation to this 70-year old, Canadian non-sailor. Best of luck on the rehab project and Happy New Year to you all.
I've followed you two from the very beginning and can't thank enough for all you've shared. It's amazing to think about how long it's been. I currently live in Salina Kansas almost smack dab in the middle of the U.S. You asked if anyone had ever had a devastating experience like this and yes I've had many from tornadoes to earthquakes. I lived in Los Angeles California (Sherman Oaks) and went through the Northridge earthquake which was devastating and life altering. Needless to say you learn a ton about yourself and will eventually be great full about what that is. Think of it this way it's as if God has given you superpowers. Not everyone can relate or be able to help if going through that experience but now you guys can. Thank God you are all OK and please get a good rest and look forward to seeing you all back on here soon. John D Salina Kansas United States
We did experience a monumental sailing experience that created a strong bond. Back in 2016 we were anchored when a 100 mph straight line wind came through at 3am (not forecasted). We were dragging toward a rock wall. The Captain (an amazing sailor) is paraplegic but with the extreme heel he couldn’t get up the campanien way. Thankfully we got a lesson on how to start the new engine just the day before. It was impossible to make headway because the dinghy, with an outboard, had flipped over but we slowly inched away from the rocks. More to the tale…but we made it. We headed back to the marina. Joked about getting a cabin and never sail again but we dried out the outboard and headed out to anchor again that night. Captain’s a therapist. He said it takes 6 months to process a peak experience. Damn straight. But the 4 of us have been tight ever since.
Glad to see your in good spirits. It’s hard to know how one would handle a situation like this until it happens. Y’all seem to be handling it well. Merry Christmas happy new year
So glad and grateful you are taking care of yourselves. Nothing....and i mean NOTHING is more important than you and your support system -your family ❤ when it is safe to do so, can you please let us know where you are staying as the video ending is breathtaking. Best wishes from northern Ontario Canada ❤️🥰
Even if you weren't being forced to take some time off because you can't fix your boat quite yet, a break after something like that is imperative. I am glad you are working with a therapist and having some time away in a forest in Japan. Sounds like you will have some time to fly back to Tokyeo and go to your concert. You might not be sailing there, but you will still be there.
An event such as you guys experienced either makes you or breaks you, but you have the "bottle" to overcome it, grow from it, and learn from it. You also have the best of incentives, your two little men. I have been following you guys from the early days, but just lurking, my sailing is now done vicariously by following you and a couple of other sailors. I have just entered my 90th year, and I gave up my own boat several years ago, I do miss it. All the best for the coming year, and good luck with the repairs, the last time I was in Hiroshima was in 1956, it was a bit of a ruin then. Noel in Melbourne
Hey Riley, yeah loads of life threatening and potentially catastrophic experiences that are super negative at the time yet all feel totally positive either in the immediate aftermath or in time, deepens the well. And that thing about time slowing down is absolutely true, almost the single most amazing thing. Personal individual dynamics, performance and relationships are changed forever for the positive with the common experience and bonding through whatever was happening. With those operating at a high level it’s exhilarating and exhausting afterwards, most definitely analysing performances of others and oneself in real time and retrospectively. However with the results always seemingly the same in that everyone did what they were capable of and it is what it is. There’s no lies in these situations and everyone weaker or stronger accepts truth, weekness and strength yet bonds all the same and forever. For those who you may not be particularly close or even kinda dislike an appreciation of there skills, talent, professionalism or lack thereof changes in that any previously negative feelings evaporate as you appreciate them as humans, accepting that others or yourself filled their roles seamlessly. In instances where all performed awesome there’s just a knowing smile and warmth seeing each other whether you were previously tight or not you are and forever will be. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and stick with the singing and guitar, you’ve got talent kiddo!
I hope you guys enjoy a bit of land life for a while, enjoying all the sights of Japan, the Idles, and skiing in the most amazing snow! I hope that everything goes well with the boat repairs and you're back out on the water in no time.
Blessing that you are able to sail to the repair shop! The boys are getting so big! Didn’t Elena want to spend the winter on shore for the winter before the accident? Dreams do come true! ❤️ Best wishes for the new year!
Don't worry about anything but what's best for you and your family, you the most important part of sailing lavagabond We will really miss you but you need to regroup and take care of yourselfs first lots of love and hugs praying for you all Lenny and Darwin you so brave and adorable shout out to you all
I’ve worked 7 days a week for over 6 weeks now straight through the holidays. My daughter who hasn’t been home in 4 years came for Xmas and I got to do nothing with her in 8 days. And when I watch this it reminds why I’m soon exiting this 30 years of working to work instead of live. Continue to be grateful as you always are as you could be in living hell like some of us. Thank you guys as always.
So glad to see you floating to a safe port, taking a break is also not a bad idea. You have all been through a really rough time, heal up and allow yourselves to find peace again. Please just let us know that you are all ok from time to time even if it is just a message on the tube.
My brother and his wife have a 48 ft cat ("Ocelot") that they have been on for over 20 years. They are currently in Borneo and very familiar with sailing in the east. They theorize that, because sailors aren't often seen in Japan, the fishing vessel occupants were probably curious and brought their boat in very close to see your boat, but they didn't bank on it being a, multi-hulls, as those kinds of boats are rare are rare in Japan..
Love watching your videos, every day is an adventure for you and your boys, what an exciting and wonderful life! I hope they have an appreciation for this when they are older. Enjoy the break!
I was crew on a cruiseship in 2016 that got caught in a hurricane and lost power in the stabilizers. The ship was violently rocking and rolling for HOURS and was so dangerous crew and guests were confined to their cabins. Crew cabins were 70sq feet and also 3 floors below deck and so from my top bunk I was being violently rocked from side to side while occasionally being thrown into the ceiling all while watching water leak into my cabin. 24 hours after this ordeal, we went into dry dock to repair the damage and the only people left on the ship were the crew ( whoever didnt quit) and we all bonded and got very close. Dinner parties, nights out, tears, laughter, it ended up being the perfect end to the Caribbean season.
Another wonderful video! Hope you keep making videos of your life off the boat. I would watch you guys doing just about anything:) Hopefully the boat repairs go smoothly, and you love exploring more of Japan.
It took me every bit of ten minutes to stop laughing at the ridiculous hats comments at 11:35 - 11:40! That was so much fun. Also want to wish you guys the best during this rest time. You deserve it. Looking forward to staying in touch as this evolves, and REALLY looking forward enjoying the future adventures on La Vagabonde 2!!!
Keep your chin up kids!!! You’ll be repaired and under way again in No time!! No one was hurt, accidents happen. I’ve been watching some of your older vids and enjoying how far you’ve come…!! Count Your Blessings!!!! Happy New Year!!
Hi guys. Love the show. At one stage I back-tracked and have watched every show since the beginning. 2007, living in Brisbane. I lost the whole roof of my top floor apartment. I was in the flat at the time. Yes, it re-arranges your thinking. Puts your priorities into o focus. 9 months later I moved back into the same flat. I’m a survivor. Want to know who your real friends are? Get yourself into deep shit. Who do you call? Who turns up? I was blessed by good friends. What got me through it all was attitude! Always a batchelor. If you have a problem, you don’t whine, you deal with it. By the yard it’s too hard, by the inch, it’s a cinch. Reputation is what other people think of you. Character is who you are. Hang in there, you guys are awesome!
Don't have anything to say that others haven't, but it's a very good thing that the boat was hit where it was hit. Thank God for small miracles... And you know, Riley, how you'll handle a disaster when the next one rears it's ugly head. The boys look like they've come through this well, and with any luck Elayna will not have any more issues with anxiety. Happy New Year to you all!
I think this is why healthcare workers are so tight. I work in the NHS and so many events have bonded me with my friends and colleagues. I work in paediatrics, and when you lose a patient specially babies you end up bonded to your colleagues but also to the families. You share the most horrific parts of their life, and although the experiences are different for everyone in the team, the bond is real. It changes you.
As someone who struggles with anxiety, I have experienced times where my symptoms were gone for huge stretches of time (years!) and then showed up. Usually takes a large event, like what you experienced. Glad you have a counselor. That helps a bunch. Magnesium tablets or similar before bed and access to quick acting meds helped me. Needed a few weeks/months to get back to normal, but it certainly takes time. And the trauma of the first experience definitely plays into what you are feeling now. I don’t know what your triggers are, but I have ways to combat the triggers with other manual, physical means, which helps. Like elevated heart rate with exercise used to trigger me, but figuring out how to exercise changed that. Moving something psychological to something that can be modified physically helped me. Maybe that’s a “control” issue, but even pretending I’m in control has helped with other issues.
Man I’ve been watching these vids since they met in Greece, I think it was, somewhere in the Mediterranean. Amazing how Aussies are spread out ALL over the world. There are Aussies in my small town of 36,000 in Mississippi believe it or not.
I call moments of deep challenge, pain, or sadness “painful bliss” or “brutiful.” It’s extraordinary to witness the resilience people show, like the resilience you and Elayna have demonstrated. Watching your response, as well as that of those who collided with you, was so frightening, and also a powerful example of grace appearing in the hardest times. Without challenge, we miss out on growth-inspiring moments. These moments can prompt us to notice and appreciate the little things in life; all at once.My mom has been on hospice longer than expected. There is truly no one like her, and I can’t imagine life without her (so I don’t try). I’ve practiced presence for years, both personally and professionally, and although it’s heartbreaking, it allows me to witness the love of others, the warmth, care, and support my sons, now four young men show her. What more could I ask for? I’ve been watching your show for years. You’re both extraordinary humans and parents, and you unapologetically share all sides of yourselves. It’s wonderful to watch. Your boys are blessings and blessed at the same time. I’m so glad you’re all safe and sound. Much love, Marilyn 🌹
You asked about stories - I was in a canoe with my wife and my 4 or 5 year old son and baby daughter going down a man made canoe bypass on the Willamette river in Oregon - it was built to bypass a 10 foot water falls and my son was at the bow of the canoe and I was steering and paddling at the stern of the canoe and my wife was sitting in front of me with our baby daughter in her arms when all of a sudden the bow went underwater and we went over the side And in that moment I had premonition, reaction to catch my daughter who actually fell out of her mother's arms as the boat did a 360 roll over and in a split second I thought we lost my son and when it righted itself there was my son holding on the the gunwales of the canoe to my utter astonishment and relief we all came through - sadly there was no signs saying in the river "Don't think about staying in your canoe when going down the bypass - too steep an incline" And that's a traums near accident almost losing my two kids - that I have filed away put in my nightmare draw and threw away the key
I'm so happy to see you guys are safe and sound in your temporary home in Japan. Hope your family had a Merry Christmas and wishing you Happy New Year!! Thank you for sharing your lives with all of us.
Glad to hear you're still checking out the Alps. Just spent 6 days in the Hakuba Valley Ski resorts Snowboarding. They said that this time last year there was barely any snow - well this year it snowed for days and days and I was there in late Dec. It's going to be an epic season this year - you guys will love it.
Well it is two days after Christmas but Merry Christmas.. it was a lovely video and was hoping for one. I hope that even though you won’t be on your boat you will still keep us updated on your journey in Japan🤗 Happy New Years.. ☮️❤️ Deb

Any trauma, no matter what it is, brings people closer together. Sadly a lot have faced different traumatic events in their lives and it helps to know we are not alone
Bless your❤
Glad you guys are all safe and good luck on your next adventure, and excited to see what is to come!
Count your blessings, stay in the moment and enjoy your rest! I cant believe those hats!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was heartbroken to hear about the sailing accident and the challenges your family has faced. Please know that you are in my thoughts during this difficult time. The strength and courage you have shown are truly admirable, and I hope you find comfort in the love and support of those around you.
Glad to see that you landed in the perfect place to heal, connect and plan your future adventures.
Merry Christmas!
♥️🎄♥️
You Better Help story Made tears come out.
Merry Christmas to you and yours!! So glad things are going better. Enjoy your house time!❤😊
Take care of yourselves.
Absolutely beautiful landing place. My goodness, that’s the life. Good for you to still be living your best life!
Blessings to you and your family for a safe and happy new year!❤
I've followed you two from the very beginning and can't thank enough for all you've shared.

Wishing you all the best always. Thank you for all the good times this year. Enjoy your much earned break. XO, Kelly
100 mph. I think you should calibrate your measures Equipment. Absulutely bs...
Oh I love how the Lord provides opportunities for you all to have some down time and recovery time. In such a cool place. Merry Christmas to you all
Wishing you Guys a very errs Christmas and happy new year! Enjoy your much deserved break with your family!
What a blessing you had your mate with ya when this happen. He’s such a stud. Well handled fellas and by all. Up the La Vagabond
Don't worry about anything but what's best for you and your family, you the most important part of sailing lavagabond
We will really miss you but you need to regroup and take care of yourselfs first lots of love and hugs praying for you all Lenny and Darwin you so brave and adorable shout out to you all
I’ve worked 7 days a week for over 6 weeks now straight through the holidays.
Merry Christmas and a safe, wonderful, incredible, healthy, happy new year!!!
Good job you guys! Way to weather the storm and tell an amazing story. Happy New Year!
The photography and filming is stunning !! 😁🙏☀️
Another wonderful video! Hope you keep making videos of your life off the boat. I would watch you guys doing just about anything:) Hopefully the boat repairs go smoothly, and you love exploring more of Japan.
Looks like why most boat people don’t cruise around Japan clearly.
Glad you’re all ok and taking a time-out to rest and heal. Merry Christmas to you all as well.
Hope everything runs smoothly and quickly.
Enjoy your time off! We’ll be waiting for your return!! ❤️
I’m glad you have better health Elaina and good on you for gifting the knowledge of how counseling can help everyone! ❤❤
Going through a sad relationship breakup at the moment but watching you gave me a smile and reminded me how much there is to live for. Thanks Guys
Holiday break ups are the worst! Hang in there!
Thanks will do@@sarahogawa5408
@@sarahogawa5408sucks how much break ups rock your world. I’m in the same boat rn.
Merry Christmas and here's to a fabulous New Year for you all. Thanks for sharing your adventures once again. Big love from Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks you guys. We love your channel. We will miss you temporarily and hope you enjoy your hiatus before the “big fix”. Happy New Year 🎉
As someone who struggles with anxiety, I have experienced times where my symptoms were gone for huge stretches of time (years!) and then showed up.
Merry Christmas guys! Here’s to a great new year!! Much love❤️
Man I’ve been watching these vids since they met in Greece, I think it was, somewhere in the Mediterranean. Amazing how Aussies are spread out ALL over the world. There are Aussies in my small town of 36,000 in Mississippi believe it or not.
Been watching since then too! Love them!
Much love and respect to y'all!!
Rest,Relax and Recharge. Hope you're all doing well. I will be looking forward to new videos after the boat is repaired.
Enjoy your time off the boat! Thankful you are all doing well. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!
You asked about stories - I was in a canoe with my wife and my 4 or 5 year old son and baby daughter going down a man made canoe bypass on the Willamette river in Oregon - it was built to bypass a 10 foot water falls
and my son was at the bow of the canoe and I was steering and paddling at the stern of the canoe and my wife was sitting in front of me with our baby daughter in her arms when all of a sudden the bow went underwater and we went over the side
And in that moment I had premonition, reaction to catch my daughter who actually fell out of her mother's arms as the boat did a 360 roll over and in a split second I thought we lost my son and when it righted itself there was my son holding on the the gunwales of the canoe
to my utter astonishment and relief we all came through - sadly there was no signs saying in the river "Don't think about staying in your canoe when going down the bypass - too steep an incline"
And that's a traums near accident almost losing my two kids - that I have filed away put in my nightmare draw and threw away the key
Merry Christmas... Thanks for entertaining us, so well.....
Enjoy your time off, will be here when you’re back 💛

Glad to hear you're still checking out the Alps. Just spent 6 days in the Hakuba Valley Ski resorts Snowboarding. They said that this time last year there was barely any snow - well this year it snowed for days and days and I was there in late Dec. It's going to be an epic season this year - you guys will love it.
All the best for the new year and with the repairs. Rest up and rejuvenate! ❤
