The only SG I ever owned was a late 70’s with P-90’s. The neck pickup on that guitar had a sound like a violin!!! Endless sustain and killer tone!!

      So underrated, SG's, I don't know why!
I thought I hated them for yeàrs, because I thought it was deliberately designed to look like the devil's head/horns.
And Satanic Panic had cooled down to a tepid, lame, yawn - by the time I was teaching myself chords on an old a justice from a batteredokd chord book.
Pretending to be minions of Satan... to snub your rebellious nose at the Almighty, was once the ultimare, ballsey act of rebellion... but had become a lame way to seem edgy, it "bad" or...even remotely interesting.
Ozzy Osbourne, ACDC, Judas Priest , Kiss, Alice Cooper, W.A.S.P. and Venom were all on the way out as I was coming through.
I got turned into rock music, and learning guitar at age 12-13, right at the end of town metals' run on the Sunset Strip.
So...by that point, the o G acts like Black Sabbath and KISS were already kinda passe...and the death of Glam metal DOUBLY killed them.
So, me,a teen wannabe rocker in the late 80's/90's , saw SG like I saw (and still see) the BC Warlock : all about looking "scary", without concerning itself with just focusing on being a good instrument.
But I stumbled onto trying one out for serious a few yrs back...and wound up buying the blue SG Special, by Gibson , you see in my icon picture.☝️
      My number one , now.
      ALMOST the perfect guitar!
I am as surprised as anyone, believe me! I didn't think any model could outdo both the Strat AND the Les Paul, in one go!
But that's really what it is....the best principles from each....the ergonomics of a Strat (albeit, employed iñ their own, different manner)...with thebest construction of the LP for great , rich, sustaining tone____________________________!
I think it was just one or two "Makes/Marks" away from the penultimate, perfect Rock guitar. Ithink making the body thicker, but still thinner than a Les Paul, would counter neck dive...and add more of the rich Les Paul tone into it.
      That would be perfect.
But...mine is pretty close, otherwise. It doesn't really dive, and it is so resonant...it siiiings!!
      I done rambled again.😗
But yeah...I meant to say that once I eventually gave it a go, I realised that my preconception - that it was shape that way to look "cool", like an Antichrist Axe, the Beelzebub blues basher...the Ghoul-Gods' guitar...the Satanic Shredstick and the Devil's Djenter...(lol - really pushing them now!😂)...was just wrong.
It is shaped like that for ergonomic reasons...one of only a few guitarp models this can be said about, wholly and honestly. The Stratocaster...the Jazzmaster...and the SG...are the only classic shapes that were designed with ergonomics being the chief factor.
In modern ti es,I would add the Boden, by Strandberg.
So...the SG is in a very exclusive club of guitar models who DID NOT do what I accused it if..!
I gotta stop raving on to some poor dude in the comments, who was just breezing through while be eats his cornflakes!

  • @andreyvanakoff9412
    @andreyvanakoff9412 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Gibsons on P-90 are fantastic with one of the most versatile pickups! Firstly, on different amps you can get both vintage and modern sounds. Secondly, use Volume and Tone knobs, for example "humbucker" will be with Tone from 8 to 4, "single coil" will be from 5 to 2 (depends on amp and basically your task). Third, they are less noisy than single coils. And last - they have enough output to cover everything, from crystal cleans, to heaviest drop-X genres. As for SG Junior/Special in 2023, they are not that pricey now... Quality is much better than previous years (i mean all 2019+), hard cases, straps, multitools, factory PLEK plus setup, it's US made guitars with history, but in hands they are just really good instruments.

Scored a Sparkling Burgundy from CME for $1250 as "Good" condition. When this baby arrived, the scratches were miniscule and cleaned up with Lizard Spit fine scratch remover. Set up was on point, but put on new strings and it plays like a dream, intonation is near perfect, stays in tune, and NO NECK DIVE! Heluva buy, so I guess if sucks lately as stated by another commenter, I got goddam lucky 😄. But I own three other Gibsons and sold another two with no QC or tuning issues. I guess I'm super Fn lucky 😁

I need to convert one of my guitars to p90s, Seymour Duncan Phat Cat P-90 will fit in standard humbucker routes, most of my Epiphones have Probucker 2 & 3s, so it would be nice to have a little variety. I have a Prophecy SG but it is active which is an entirely different way to go, but not as easy to retrofit a newer guitar not routed for active.

I picked up a new 22’ husk of one of these via Stratosphere so I purchased all the stuff I’d want in one 🤙
I loaded this baby with Antiquity P90’s, the Revolution Kluson locking tuners, Faber compensated bridge with locking studs and I also installed a Vitamin Q capacitor harness. Mine comes in at 5.6 pounds fully assembled and it’s an incredible axe, love it.
I also have a Les Paul Special which was purchased brand new via Sweetwater which feels great too however I wish I would’ve went the same way with that one as I did my SG with far better hardware.

If you are chasing the sound only - go Epi; but if you want luxury and feel and quality AND sound and are actually playing outside of your room once in a while, go Gibson. Both are valid for different purposes. It's a matter of a few less pizzas at a restaurant , big deal. Rosewood v Indian Laurel? Nashville v Guangdong? 2 no brainers right there. I have both (got Iommi SG and Epi Explorer and more) and there is no comparison as far as feel; but as far as multitracking you won't know what the heck I'm playing so it's all in what your needs and prefs are. All I know is I'm shocked how much I like the fat not typical SG Iommi neck what with my smaller (70 yr old) mitts but if it's the Plek job, MAN is it worth it cuz it's FAST. My 2¢ 🎸

The recent Epiphone version has the bridge pickup further away from the bridge than the Gibson.

The location of the bridge pickup on the Epiphone is actually more authentic than the Gibson. If you look at Gibson custom shop versions and the vintage ones, the bridge pickup isn't close to the bridge.

I've wanted my next Gibson to be an SG, I have an Epi, LTD, Vintage and Firefly :) so far. I like the P-90's, I have them a couple of other guitars, but I think this would be the best combo.

My 2001 SG Standard had a 500T in the bridge spot and I hated it, so I put in some Mean 90 pickups from GFS .They are essentially P90 style single coils made to fit a humbucker slot with no mods.

I've been looking for something with P90's for about a year now. I've never owned a Yamaha (quick note, I'll be 71 soon and I've owned a LOT of guitars!) and I thought the new RevStar Std w/P90's would be perfect. But after all the $$ Yamaha spent on advertising it's still not available, and nobody can tell me why!?! Anyway, the LP Special, and this SG special would work too. But, I'm also a 'big neck' guy, no 'slim taper' for me. After a long hunt, I learned there are several ways to get a fat neck SG. Musicians Friend apparently has the rights to Team built CS ones from Gibson. ~$4400. Then actual CS ones, Wildwood has them for ~$5000. Then the Tony Iommi, I haven't seen official spec's, but a couple reviews said his neck was 'chunky', at ~$2300? So no P90's yet and the jury is still out. Maybe you guys could look into the RevStar thing? If you do it will probably show up, you know, that Murphy's law thing. LOLOL Thanks much!! 8) --gary

@@smeagle3295 Thank You! In the little over a year since I posted this, I turned 72, and I bought and returned a Yamaha RevStar-P90 guitar. I had it 10 days, and played a gig with it. Just couldn't warm up to it. About 5 months ago I sold my 3 LesPauls. My Custom Shop 335 w/a 58 neck shape is my current #1, and I'm working on choosing a CS SG w/P90's from Wildwood Guitars. They seem to have the best selection on the rack and best service/help in buying one. Also looking for a couple SG husks, I have 2 sets of special PAF/PUPs. Thanks! --gary
