    Tony Iommi is a big inspiration for me. I'm a bass player, but I'm missing a fingertip. His story and just how good Sabbath is have really kept me going when I thought I couldn't play anymore.

      Django Reinhardt lost the use of two his fingers and played phenomenal jazz.
      More modernly, Christian Münzner from Necrophagist and Obscura fame can shred with only 3 fingers.

      I wasn’t either till I played my ‘73 at a shop in my area. I was always a Les Paul guy. It’s so comfortable to play, sounds wicked, a true joy to play. A heavier one is better, mitigates the neck dive. Mine is 7.12lbs, sits nicely, no wrist fatigue.

    SG’s do balance better with the strap button on the horn. The back of the heel button will neck dive on most style guitars from my experience. Those pickups sounded great to me. The clean tones were rich and ballsy without being muddy like a lot of Gibsons. And the dirt tones were really nasty (in a good way). Pretty sweet fiddle.

      @@jonathanhudak2059 yeah, my 92' Standard has a fatter neck too than most SG's I've ever played so maybe Gibson made them that way back then or something? I don't really mind neck thickness tbh. For me, it's more nut width that matters.

    • @VidMashUp
      @VidMashUp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jubei7259 I find that their necks frequently vary slightly from what their spec is. I mean, I don't know the exact specs, but since they're hand-made, I assume there's quite a bit of tolerance in measurements as long as they have the correct "feel". When my playing gets a litte stale or I'm stuck in a song, I'll swap out a 60s LP for an SG, a 50s LP, a special - whatever. I'm usually worse for the first hour or so, but then when I switch back in an hour or two, or day, or two I feel like I've "unlocked" something I was stuck on. It's all psychological and I can't even begin to explain why or if this happens to everyone. What I am pretty sure about us that anyone could play on a given neck for a week or so and no longer feel that it's different. Maybe some outliers are different like an Ibanez wizard 99 neck or whatever - but some necks are just really, really different. Among Gibson's and Fenders though (not sure about vintage fender and the tiny radius - don't think I ever played one), switching around doesn't see to matter to me much except as I said, maybe to help me with some tiny breakthroughs.

  • @tschommer

    The spacers on the top of the pickups are there because the metal covers are so much thinner than the plastic. If they weren’t there the pole screws would stick out of the top more than normal. I put metal covers on my P90 V and they came with spacers.

    • @SionynJones
      @SionynJones 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be my guess too though they should be nickel silver and have low conductivity but probably would effect the sound.

    The traditional pro III and the SG that I bought from you has drastically different necks. The SG has quite a chunky neck compared to the LP. I'll have to remind my brother who started playing before I did and is a lefty that plays right handed that it is possible to play with a missing finger tip. Of course that happened a few years back and he kind of gave up playing awhile getting used to a missing index finger tip. I think on this guitar I may just leave the sticker in the case or put on the case itself.

    Gibson USA 2014 to present - These serial numbers cannot be dated to a specific day of the year.
    The new model year typically launches in the fall as the current model year winds down. It is not uncommon for a new model year model to be produced during the previous model year (example - a 2015 model may have been built in late 2014).
    The pattern is as follows:
    YYRRRRRRR
    YY is the model year
    RRRRRRR is the number in product for the model year (starts at 0000001)

    I prefer the Tony Iommi signature sg Epiphone 2015 model that I purchased in about May 2021 after having to check about 20 different online stores just to find one for sale. I finally found a used one for sale for $850 (the same as they cost new) but it was worth it after the incredibly difficult time in finding one for sale.
    The high-output custom Gibson U.S.A Humbucker pickups on the 2015 model sound just amazing. And since I prefer the "heavier" sounding era of Black Sabbath when Ian Gillan, Ronnie James Dio, & Tony Martin were vocalists in the band, the Epiphone with the humbuckers was the definite choice for me.

Now I actually do appreciate all the Iommi-ness of it as an old SG aficionado. What a beautiful fast plek'd board SG. It's got that shimmer chatoyance effect up the wazoo and the macro tone is of the lighter cherry almost orange mahogany. My rightie weighs a massive (not) 6.156 lbs . The only SG I ever tried that didn’t experience neck dive from was an epiphone ebony Tony Iommi G400 and I think it was due to the position of the strap button on the horn . Which I realize now I should have purchased , as quality lefty Tony Iommi SG ‘s are rare to find used . I’ve never understood why Gibson or Epiphone doesn’t put the strap button there in the first place , if all of the Tony iommi models successfully have it there . And it seems to kill the biggest complaint of the model .

      Yes it does, a pickup reacts to ferromagnetic stuffs. So when you have metal covers, in sorta way its "resonating more" so you make the pickups into "microphonics" (for example if you scream into the pickup and you hear the voice on the amp) if you want a powerfull (but noice with high gain) sound, you can make copper covers lefting a tiny space between the pickups and the upper face cover (so when the copper plates moves, it induce current to your pickups)

    The finish flaw under the plastics should of been flagged by QC and fixed unacceptable in a 2k instrument. The guitar is pretty meh overall except for those custom pickups, which epiphone and Gibson seem to be doing a lot lately. That is where the value is with this guitar is the custom voiced pickups and boy do they sound so good.
    You get the beef of humbucker and the clairty with of a single coil. I'm both a fan of Gibson and epiphone current p-90 offerings. Like that epiphone LP special you reviewed. I've certainly became a p-90 convert. Don't get me wrong I still like humbuckers but now get why so many are drawn to p-90s over humbuckers they are very versatile pickups.

    Thanks charlie. Go with your bad ass black service Black Sabbath coolness man. I could tell you a digging it and it sounded great. And it doesn't sound anything like my special my SG 2005 Gibson special. Mine's and wine red full gloss. Am I don't have anything like the old time ones. It's got a regular stop bar that you find on the standard it's got the same tuna matic bridge as is on the 2005 standard the pickups I don't know which ones they put on the 2005 standard but mine are 490t1900 uncovered. Which I plant the cover at some point with some Chrome and nickel plated pickup coverage. It only has that mother of pearl inlays on the fingerboard. It does have a different neck shape. Or thickness. It's like in between the thick ones and the skinny ones. It's a very very comfortable neck profile to say the least. Well you were just playing with so cool charlie. And sounded so great once you hit the distortion. I've come to understand that throughout the history of the SG special they are so many iterations it's pretty cool. I love mine. When I first got it I thought I'd be wanting to change out the pickups but the truth is I don't want anymore they do they do what you want them to and they sound real really good so why flop them out. Yeah that's what I would call the flopping out so I don't think there's going to be much better if it's my guitar perfectly. Again I'm just going to be adding pick up wings and nickel plated or Chrome covers on it. Anyway just repeating myself that means it's time to stop the comment thanks again man. You were rocking. Sometimes it's hard on my little Android phone I have a big Android phone LOL to really know what the guitar sounds like. But this guitar sounded great even through my android. The only thing I have a problem with is I can't get over 60 cycle hum. At first I thought that this guitar really didn't have much but then when you were playing lightly or softly with the overdrive it was there. You know and that would drive me crazy. Anyway sincerely yours, Bob the blind bedroom guitarist

    I think its a reasonable compromise that prices at least in the sensibly priced stratosphere- only complaint and you point this out- the lacqured neck is something I'd want if I had an Iommi style guitar. Honestly with his light touch Im not sure i could even play a guitar setup for him. The custom shop version though - someone paying 20k for a guitar that is artificially "antiqued" just screams poser with too much dusposable income to me. I think these are reasonably priced though. I want one dammit. Ha.
