- Denmark meet France in the 2018 FIFA World Cup group stage, however it's not the first time these two nations have met in the group stage of a major tournament. Back in EURO 2000, Jon Dahl Tomasson and Dider Deschamps were on the pitch, but in 2018 both are involved again, but this time watching from the dug out. On that day, reigning World Cup champions eased past Denmark thanks to strikes from Laurent Blanc, Thierry Henry and Sylvain Wiltord.

As a Belgian I was at that game. Treated my father to it. 4 months later my mother died. Life is sweet and cruel. France was impressive.
If your username is your birth year, then you're a year older than my dad. I was born in 93 and I still have my parents. It's something I'm well aware will happen, but coming to terms with the circle of life and how moments and people are fleeting and easily forgotten about is something I've struggled, and still do struggle, to get to grips with.
Memories are the most precious things and the optimist in me trusts that there is a second stage to life. Maybe we can all relive our best times and enjoy our loved ones again. That's not so hard to accept.
Zidane and Henry. What a great number 10 and number 9. This was the greatest French team. Viera and Makelele behind Zidane in the midfield is one of the most formidable midfield 3's ever put onto a football pitch. Skill and strength.

Actually Zidane only gave one assist to Henry in all their international career (free kick against Brazil in WC 2006)

Lol Zidane and Henry were incompatible with each other on the pitch. So much so that the French media made rumors that there were rifts between the Arsenal French players camp and Zidane.
Henry wants the midfield to give the ball to him early while Zidane wants to dribble with the ball all the time.

Absolutely no need to meantion Barthez. He's got to be the most overrated keeper of all time. They were good in spite of having him in there. But, horrible tournament, since Im danish. Lovely french team, no doubt about it.

The same team in 1996, aside from Jocelyn Angloma and a still too young Thierry Henry lost a penalty to a determined Czech team who in turn lost to the Best German team which finally reemerged in 2014. 2000 was good, but 1996 was better.
That French Generation from 1998 till 2002 was so insane.

With the awful Domenech on the bench and players like Boumsong, Alou Diarra, Givet, Saha and Chimbonda? Not that it was a bad squad but there is no comparison with 1998-2000.

I respect your opinion. I think it"s complicated to compare two different generations, football has changed a lot between the early 80's and the late 90's, all I'm saying is that Platini's generation was world class too.
Giresse, Tigana, Fernandez, Genghini, Trésor, Bossis, Amoros, Six, Rocheteau, Bats, etc... those players may not be as world famous as the 96-00 generation but from a french point of view they were legendary.

@@magikmalick you are right and in the 1980s the level of competition France had to face was insane compared to the late 1990s. The Brazil of Tele Santana, Maradona's Argentina, West Germany, Enzo Bearzot's Italy were monsters too. At Euro 1984 France had to overcome a number of tricky opponents like Spain, Portugal and Denmark, it was a perfect tournament for them.

It's interesting to see how great teams are mythologized. This France defence is (rightly) considered one of the greatest of all time but Thuram gave away a number of cheap penalties throughout the tournament and the entire defence, especially the great Desailly, were at 6s and 7s for Denmark's first chance in this game. Had Denmark converted that chance and gone on to eliminate France I wonder how differently this France team would be remembered

France would've still had good chance of going through even with a loss here as 3 teams would've finished on 3 points and that's if France didn't take last game as seriously like they didn't in the end because they were already through.
And that's also irrelevant because not only did 🇫🇷 not lose this game they won it 3-0. So I think they were good enough for at least a draw here even if they had conceded that early chance. A draw wouldn't have been damaging for them at all.
🇩🇰 had an awful Euro2000. Who would've thought 2 years later roles would be reserved (apart from Denmark going on to win the tournament but I mean Frabce were awful in WC2002 and Denmark at least in group stage were the opposite and even Tommason scored against 🇫🇷 this time).

This all winning great French team depended so much on Zidane thanks to zidane's consistency he was all ways up for it..
That team was a unit. That's also what made it so great. Actually it's main strength was the defense. It's not everyday you see something like Barthez Lizarazu Blanc Desailly Thuram.
Xidane was more of a passer than a finisher.

Undoubtedly French team was a beast back then but this particular game it was more a case of woeful Denmark than glorious France. I mean, look at their defending. Also, if only they scored two great chances at the opening, the game would have been so much different.
