- Spain take on 2018 FIFA World Cup hosts Russia in the Round of 16. Their last competitive meeting was ten years ago, as Luis Aragonés' Spanish side saw off Russia on their way to the EURO 2008 title. This game featured such stars as Andrés Iniesta, David Silva, Sergio Ramos, Pepe Reina, Sergei Ignashevich, Igor Akinfeev, and Yuri Zhirkov, all of whom will be involved in the 2018 FIFA World Cup clash ten years on!

Legends Sportmastercaster He is underrated. The guy was banging in goals left and right for years and the only big club that gave him a chance was Barcelona at the age of 27 or 28. He could’ve been something more.

I`m Spanish and a Barça fan and I absolutely agree. I had never seen Spain being so superior in a major match, before or after. That squad was unbeateble. Few years later, our rivals learnt how to stop that and use our flaws but, at that point in history, we were unbeatable. I would like to highlight Silva's unmatching role in this team due to all the talent, magic and unpredictable passes he meant. Del Bosque preferred Alonso, who provided more stability, but we lost fairy dust.
What a fantasticl pleasure it is to have seen my country play so beautifully.

En mi caso yo destaco a Marcos Senna, para mi el autentico MVP de 2008, Silva siempre me parecio sobrevalorado por la lentitud a la q mueve el balon, yo tambien preferia a Xabi Alonso y Busquets juntos, permitiendo a Xabi subir mas y aprovechar sus dotes ofensivas q tambien las tenia y buenas o rotarse en las subidas con Busquets q tambien tiene su peligro ofensivo. I remember reading some comments from the defeated German players after their loss to Spain in the final. The remarks were on the lines of “we couldn’t even get near them”.
It was the same in the WC Semis, Germany had just crushed Argentina and England 4-0 and 4-1 respectively but couldn't come near Spain.

The final vs Italy 2012 was a final, and the semi vs Germany 2010 was a World Cup, but to me this has been the most beautiful game I've seen them play.
I think this game completely changed the way rivals faced them in the following years, basically closed and tough aiming for a 0-0, which led to a more horizontal and boring tiki-taka.

You can really see how much they've declined and how stale their sideways "tiki taka" has become. Aragones was the best manager, they were harsh to replace him, even though Del Bosque won the World Cup with them 2 years later you could already see they'd started to decline and become less exciting by then.

@@Thehawkdown99They played a great final game in 2012 but I stand by what I said, 2008 was the best and most exciting Spanish team. 2012 was probably an improvement on 2010, mainly because of that final performance. So I should've worded that better. They definitely declined after that though.

One of my most beloved national team, love it immensely. 2008 this is the year I fell in love with Furia Rojo, have been its fan for 12 years.
The movement of Xavi for the first goal is incredible, comes back to collect the ball deep then lays it off, takes the ball again further up the field and drives at the the defence then finally he arrives into space just in time to finish.
