Results from the LAAOS-III randomized controlled trial, conducted by PHRI and published in the NEJM, 2021, are significant because it establishes surgical LAAO as a sustained method to lower the risk of thromboembolism in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who undergo cardiac surgery.
